  1. You know, I would have said the same thing up until last week. I thought that this would be the year that Maryville would go down as well because I have seen them turn the ball over and I have seen them stuggle to run the football. But as is the case with many other Maryville teams in the past, when the playoffs roll around they step it up. They played better last Friday then I ever thought they were capable of playing. Red Bank was incredible up front against Powell and Maryville absolutely destroyed the Red Bank front offensively and defensively. VolmanScott. the 08 is because I wore number 8 my senior year which was 2006. It must take a real man to issue a threat via a keyboard though. And Fountain City is a little out of the way from my house on the way to Maryville.
  2. I know that Volmanscot is going to accuse me of being cody again, but Rebelron will attest that Cody Watts was an unbelievable high school QB and is well on his way to being incredible at EKU. Maryville always found a way to give Cody problems and Watts had a a lot more weapons then Phillips does. Lee Smith is a D1 TE and Brandon Thrower was a D! WR prospect until concussions ended his career early in to his sr year. Not to mention the RB of that team is playing college ball at APSU and seeing time in the defensive back field. These Maryville kids aren't the same kids that stopped Watts, Smith, Thrower, and Courtney, but the coaches are the same and the schemes will be just as good.
  3. Phillips doesn't run a 4.5 even on his scouts.com profile he runs a 4.6 fastest i have heard is 4.55 and he doesn't have the game speed to match that time from the game that I saw. And like i said sims runs harder then phillips and Maryville handled him just fine. And they did it while having to worry about an above average QB and really really REALLY athletic receivers passing game.
  4. On the basis of strictly throwing the football Burnetter can make throws that I don't think Phillips is capable of. I watched Curt warm up on the sideline, and I watched Burnetter. Burnettes motion is better and he has a stronger arm atlthough Curt's feet are much better (not just running, Curt does diplay excellent footwork and balance in the pocket.) Other then Wisconsin and Kentucky, I believe he had offers from Duke, MTSU, Eastern Carolina...and a couple of other schools like that. Trust me Maryville has seen the best of the best. Maybe not so much this year, but I assure you that Houston from Powell, Stone from Clinton, and Ledbetter from Red Bank are no slouches at QB (not on phillip's level but stlll very good football players.) Not to mention these Seniors have been part of a remarkable run deep into the playoffs every year. I assure you they will not be in awe of Phillips, they have seen players better then him in the past. As for my supposed love affair with the Maryville program...thats absurd. I just know that any team that can beat some of the teams that Powell and Central have fielded in the past couple of years like they have is special. You guys in NET have no idea what you're in for. The Red Bank backs and receivers were much more athletic then the south skill kids and Maryville had no problems. Sims, the running back for Red Bank, is the most impressive individual player that I've seen this year. Now, I know it's different because he's not a threat to throw the ball but he's a better runner then phillips and he was completly shut down by the Rebs. One final tidbit before I make my final point. South does not have the best defensive coach around. Maryville's coaching staff is unreal....they will outcoach south in evever aspect of the game and thats a given. I'll simply restate what I said about the Red Bank game, and you can take this to the bank because I've been there. No matter how much you don't want to treat Maryville like they are special, you can't. You try to go into it like it's just another game, but it's not. It's more then that. You go in hoping you can shock the world. Maryville goes in KNOWING that you can't. They will be better prepared then you, they will be more disciplined then you, and they will be more physical then you. The oline will be perfect with their technique and will dominate in the trenches. South will go out there jacked up and in their hearts they will believe they have a chance...then Maryville will fly to the football and gang tackle all over the field. They will get pressure on the QB and keep contain at the same time. They will be more gap sound then any defense you've ever seen on the high school level. Then they will take the ball and that oline will snatch up the south d line and backers and they will march on long sustained drives and they will break your spirits until you realize...they're doing it again. I know all you South fans are tired of me saying negative things about your programk, but you'll see it Friday night. You can believe it all week in practice but everything changes on Friday nights when you get out there. This will be just another day at the office for Maryville, but for South it'll be the super bowl.
  5. I'm intrigued by something about this match-up. It's a long standing belief of mine that so many knoxville area teams are incredibly intimidated by the Maryville name. And it's not so much a belief as it is a fact lol. See my pre game posts in the Red Bank thread (which proved to be true, Maryville is a machine lol). But I'm curious, do you think that since South doesn't really know what to expect that they will be better prepared to face the giant. Or do you think that the fact that they have never experienced it and have only heard tales of the legend will increase the intimidation factor?
  6. That Mo West team and this years version are a little different. Listen I've been saying for a while that this is the year that Maryville will get beat, but after what I just saw them do to Red Bank there's just no way. If they come out and play that way they will walk to a state title. I have seen South play once this year (against Mo West) and I watched Red Bank play Powell. Red Bank is better up front then South and they are a lot more athletic. Phillips isn't as good of a natural runner as the Sims kid (27) for Red Bank is and Maryville absolutely shut him down because they are gap sound and they fly to the football. The mercy rule will come in to effect at some point in this game.
  7. Not so embarassing to be beaten by Maryville...just look at the list. 83SouthRebel....you're right I do wish to degrade NET "football", if I must call it that. I've been civil and tried to validate my points with facts and reason. That hasn't worked. So just wait until Friday night and the real rebels will do my validating for me. I don't come on here to degrade Curt or any other 17 year old kid who lays it on the line every Friday night. It takes a special breed to play football. The games not for everyone. Like I said I have respect for Curt like I have respect for every other kid who puts in the time and effort required to play varsity football. Now, I'm just going to sit back and enjoy while you all realize what a real football team looks like and then you can come back and say that they are just better then you because of the market they play in or whatever othe excuse you guys can think of. Good luck fellas.
  8. Goliath hadn't beaten down 58 David's in a row either.
  9. Yea too bad Powell doesn't play in a JV region... or we would still be playing Don't worry you'll find out what real football looks like next friday night. You better Curt really does have a big red S on his undershirt.
  10. Well I have to say I was pretty spot on with my comments before the game. Red Bank came in hooting and hollering and then they watched the big red machine take them apart. I was impressed that they were able to string that drive together after the Rebs jumped out 14-0, but that was the extent of me being impressed with the Lions tonight. Maryville did everything I said they would have to do to win the game and then some. They gave Brent plenty of time to throw the ball and Shiver and Douglas among other delievered in the passing game. They were able to shut down sims and the rest of the Lion's athletes by flying to the ball and gang tackling. To my surprise though (I'm not sure why I'm surprised) Maryville was able to run the football. I've got news for you guys though. I've seen Red Bank and I've seen South. If you think Chatanooga football is weak just wait until next week. There's nothing really to say about this game except it was total domination by the Rebels. They could have won by 100 if they wouldn't have taken their foot off the gas. Red Bank really only scored one meaningful touchdown and that was the one to make it 14-7. As for next week....Go MARYVILLE Rebels and good luck although trust me you won't need it.
  11. Big win for the Rebs, but after seeing Maryville play tonight...the ride stops next week. Make sure all cloth is washed before turning it in on Monday.
  12. From what I saw, which isn't much, and everything that I've heard from some local radio guys who have seen tape of Phillips, he is a much bigger threat to run then he is to throw. He's a pretty powerful runner, but he's not gonna run away from many dbs. His arm is decent enough because he makes good quick decision but it's nothing special. Wisconsin was (according to scouts.com) one of the top two schools to offer him. UK also offered him but outside of that it was Duke MTSU and some other smaller schools like that. He really only had two big time D1 offers. I won't speculate as to why he chose Wisconsin over UK.
  13. Haven't had classes all week actually so I thought I would share my opinions and stir up some trouble for you guys. If it matters im in my second year at UT carrying a 3.3 (not all that impressive but not too bad if I can brag on myself a little bit lol). The English major would probably explain my articulation, and I wouln't consider that a nothing major. If my "pregaming" comment made you lose any respect for me then you're jumping to conclusions. I don't drink...I never have and I don't have any intentions of starting now. I'm actually gonna have them scalp my ticket and go to the Red Bank Maryville game tonight. The little lady is going to text me updates from Death Valley. As for phillips, I don't claim to have a more accurate eye then a laser timer, that would be ridiculous. But that laser timer times kids in shorts and t shirts and track shoes. Game speed is something totally different and if you disagree with that then you've never played football. We had a defensive end at Powell who plays at UTC now and he never once came close to beating me in 40 times....but when it was a race to the ball carrier the kid could absolutely fly. He went from the wrong side of 5 on the track to one of the most explosive players on the field on Fridays. 40 times can be misleading occasionally, and in my honest opinion this is one of those times. As for the Knoxville being a big market thus leading to more recruiting debate. There's probably a lot of truth to that argument. At the same time, while a Knoxville QB would have more weapons to work with he would also be working against better athletes and facing a more intense pass rush. Everything sort of balances out in that way I feel like. Douglas is a better prospect then Curt. Granted it's a lot easier to be a D1 offensive tackle then it is to be a D1 QB but thats neither here nor there. You have your opinion of the kid and I have mine. And for the record I don't play for Powell anymore. I would be interested to see a throw off between Kier Houston (Powell's QB) and Curt though. I'm not trying to say that Kier is better then Curt by any stretch, but Kier's biggest attribute is his arm strength. I'm not saying he would throw it farther then Curt, I'm just saying I would like to see it.
  14. I absolutely loved Daryle Smith (O line coach at Central and Powell for a few years, Lee's dad) and I will stand behind his schemes and knowledge of the game against anyone around...with that being said it is impossible to ignore results. I played and practiced agaisnt some pretty darn good blockers when I was at Powell. I played against the "Hacksaw" kid from Carter, I played against the big kid from Clinton a few years back...this region has produced some impressive offensive linemen. But I was never frustrated as a linebacker like I was when a Maryville O lineman got his hands on me. It just seemed like they were never learning, they were never out of position..and once they got their hands on your breast plate they were constantly reworking their hands to stay locked on. They are all impressive and Douglas has turned himself into a pretty impressive blocker from the TE spot as well. Maryville's o line coach definately has all of my respect. Now even though I know Maryville's o line will be technically perfect, I still believe that because Red Bank is more talented up front it is going to be difficult to red the football against the Lions. I think Burnette, Douglas and the receiving corp. are going to have to account for most if not all of the points. I don't know how well Red Bank will be able to move the ball on the Rebs either though. Maryville will be gap sound and get hats to the ball carrier. 27 is a stud, no doubt, but no one can break gang tackles. If Maryville flies to the football, like I know they will, the loss of Benford will be glaringly obvious when the Lions have to try to go to the air. Just my two cents.
  15. James are you trying to impress me your vocabulary? I won't claim freedom of speech or whatever else you said. What I will claim is that this is a board that was built around people sharing their opinions, or am I confused on the reason this board exists. Furthermore, I was under the impression that it was Curt Phillips (oh there I go dropping his name again) was the young man who played QB for Sullivan South Friday night correct? So, if my reasoning is correct...the problems that I perceived with his game really were problems with HIS game. I somehow doubt that he looks like he's running faster against say Volunteer or Greeneville. I doubt that his arm looks any stronger no matter who is on defense. I have been a part of our seen a lot of high school football over the past six years and seen a lot of great players in person and on film. When I watched the Colemon kid from Chattanooga, I knew he was D1. He wears orange and white on Saturdays now. Do I doubt that Phillips has division one ability...no not really. I believe I've mentioned that Wisconsin doesn't give scholarships to any average Joe. I just don't believe that he will be productive on the next level. And I'll say this again I HOPE THAT I'M WRONG AND CURT PHILLIPS WIN THE HEISMAN TROPHY.
  16. I'm not saying that i've heard that from just the message board. As I've previously posted I'm dating a recent South grad so I know some people from the South area, and I've just heard some rumblings that he is very high on himself. And now that Barb brings it up that quote in the paper does come off as a little cocky.... but more then likely its just a case of a leader challenging his troops which I don't personally have a problem with. Barb I have a lot to say to your comments about Red Bank, Greeneville and South being able to beat Maryville but I have hijacked this thread enough we'll just have to wait and see what happens tomorrow night.
  17. I want to start by saying let's not punch Maryville's ticket to the next round just yet. Red Bank is the real deal this year and could most definately end the streak. I can't make myself pick Red Bank, but I wouldn't be all that surprised if it happened. Now I do have a question for the South fans. Allow me to preface my statement. I have never met Curt Phillips. I have no idea what the kid is like. That being said, I have heard a lot of comments here and there that the kid is arrogant and full of himself. Again, I'M NOT SAYING THAT HE IS EITHER OF THOSE THINGS. I'm just curious if any of you guys could tell me why he has that rap? I mean did he maybe present himself that way when he was younger or is this simply Curt being targeted because he is the biggest name in the area?
  18. Ouch guys can we not bring up the Powell run lol. Seriously though the kid is a stud. I was playing linebacker on that play. I just remember seeing Iso and coming up hard to fill B gap and then before I knew what hppened he had bounced it outside and was outrunning our contain guy and then out running the angle that the backside corner had on him....still haunts me to this day lol. At least Kenny Cruz got you guys back the year after with his amazing game at Powell lol. yea, your probably right Ihavenofriendzz knoxville 5A football is much better then the division that Rogan plays in now. That pathetic ole SEC garbage. Give me a break I played against Rogan in scrimmages and he would be dominant on any level any where in the country and now hes showing it. So like I said I played against both and I don't really think I can say that one is better then the other. I don't think that Sterling has the ability to do the things that Rogan is doing now at such a high level. With that said I think if Sterling were to go to say like a mid major type D1 program he could be a very very impressive RB. That's just my two cents...I could be way way off.
  19. Wow I wish I would have gotten out to that game now that you mention it. Watching Tank and 27 collide must have been impressive. I hated trying to tackle Tank and I was a year older then him lol. I think that Red Bank has to keep this game close early. They don't have to jump out on Maryville, but they cannot allow Maryville to run out on them. I have gone in to several Powell vs. Maryville games thinking that we had a chance to win the game, but that's the problem. Look at it this way if Red Bank gets an early 14-0 lead on Maryville, what are the Rebs going to be thinking? Umm c'mon guys we're maryville we don't lost football games lets pick it up. But if Maryville jumps out 14-0, Red Bank (or Powell, or Central, or Alcoa, or Mo West, etc.) will think well here we go again. The difference has already been stated on this board. Maryville expects to win. Maryville knows they are going to win the football game. The teams that play them just hope that maybe they will be the ones to shock the world. Once you walk out there and you see the "Rebels" on the side of the helmet...and the offensive linemen are firing off and locking you up technically perfect snap after snap and you are powerless to do anything as the Maryville machine rips off 4 yards then 2 yards then 6 yards then 4 yards then 8 yards then 2 then 9 then 3 then 40...you start to realize they have won 50 plus in a row for a reason. Once you get out there the doubt starts to creep in to the back of your head and no matter how jacked up you get and how much you pump your team mates up you feel it all over your body. You're simply fighting off an inevitability.....Trust me I've been there. I've been down by 4 points with three minutes left and getting the ball back. I've been part of a team that shut the Rebels out for the entire second half of a football game....part of team that needed one drive to cut down the giant...and the giant stood up and made four straight plays on defense and showed exactly why they are who they are. Red Bank...come to Knoxville ready for an absolute dog fight....and then when Maryville starts making plays and keeps on stopping you remember what I've said....remember that that crazy guy from Powell told you so....
  20. Once again all solid points. You're right Curt doesn't have the same weapons that a lot of the guys from Knoxville have had which is why I didn't comment on his stats. Heck I don't even know his stats although they must be pretty impressive. I respect Curt because he has worked his way to a division one big ten scholarship and that is extremely impressive. I mean everybody who straps on gear dreams of being a D1 football player...I couldn't do it (coiming out of Knoxville) and Curt did...I'll always respect anyone who can do something that I couldn't do myself. What I did comment on was what I perceived to be a lack of acceleration, and it didn't appear that he had a ton of arm strength. I just simply don't agree with the face that with the right weapons he would be the top recruit in the state. Aaron Douglas would be higher on the recruiting boards any way you cut it more then likely. Other then Douglas I haven't witnessed any of the big time recruits first hand. At any rate whether or not I think Curt is the real deal doesn't really matter, what matters is the coach of Wisconsin thought he was. So I'll agree to disagree. Again, Comp if I made it sound like I don't think Curt is a good football player then I apologize. The kid can play, I just think you guys are a little too high on him...but I'm sure I've been too high on a lot of knoxville area guys and especially Powell guys it's only natural. As for Fletcher, I judged him based on the same factors that I judged Curt on. I watched him carry the football. I saw the way he moved and made cuts. The kid is pretty darn athletic. He looked to me to be more explosive then Phillips. But I back tracked and said I was probably being unfair by attempting to judge Curt after one game. It's not that I didn't think Curt was much, just in my humble opinion he's not as impressive as I was expecting him to be after the things I heard. Maybe I had unrealistic expectations of him. As for the game Friday....unfortunately me and some buddies bought student tickets for the UT UK game and we are going down Friday to pregame just a little bit. I hear Lexington is a fun city. Which is why I really really hope that Maryville and South both advance so that I can see the South play again. I'm most definately open to having my opinion of the young man changed. And if he performs against Maryville then he will make a believer out of me. It doesn't matter how slow it looks like you're running, or how weak I may think that your arm is from the stands. What matters is results. And if he comes out and puts numbers up against the Quarles dynasty then I'll believe the kid can seriously play.
  21. Lol seeking refuge on a Maryville board...I believe I've hit an all time low lol. Jackson-Garrison was one of the best backs to come through knoxville in a while although I'm sure these Rebel fans will point out Carl Stewart (no starting at Auburn) and Ryan Tallent (Carson Newman i think?) those kids were studs as well. But thats enough of the south vs. Greeneville discussion on this board lol.
  22. Aww Comp you impress me. This post actually has reason and logic behind it. I kid, I kid. I don't think that I ever said that your QB bites...and if I did thats not what I intended. I always tried to point out that anyone who gets a d1 offer and at a big ten school no less is a solid football player. I just was expecting a little bit more out of him after all that I had heard about the kid. This is after all, an opion board. Just cause mine is a lot different from yours doesn't make it wrong and likewise because yours is different then mine I don't have the right to dismiss it outright. To be honest with you. Yes, I did expect the South faithful to give me a little more info on their offensive scheme. I mean it's not llike I'm asking you to tell me what your two point play is if the situation comes up. I was just curious if Curt is truly running a spread option at South. As for the DB poster...I was really referring to 4A state titles. I'll be the first to admit I know very little of 5A football. I know that Oak Ridge has been good as well as Bearden and Farragut...but I also know that DB, when they are right, is as good as anyone in the state. Hope I didn't offend you too badly.
  23. Even though I'm picking South in this game, I still feel like they have to be the underdog. I think they are the better team on paper. I think that the old adage is true that it's very tough to beat a good team twice in the same year. I think the fact that the game is at South will be a deciding factor in the game. With all that said you, South people don't seem to think very much of the things that I THINK. What I KNOW is that the only time these two teams have been on the same field Greeneville won. Neither one of these teams is going to be the same team when they play Friday night....we all know that teams mature as the season progresses. I just think that until South comes out and proves that they can beat Greeneville High School (mind you that I think that they will) the Devils should still be considered the favorites.
  24. Well, I've been trying to refrain from getting involved in this, but it just seems like you guys are having too much fun. I want to start off by saying good luck to the rebels from North Knox county. We're all counting on you for a little bit of revenge. QBqueen's desciption of the RB Powell (not Knox Powell, just Powell that really drives me nuts) game is a little off. RB did have some twos in but it was mostly ones who just took their foot off the gas and Powell started making plays and RB struggled to turn in back on. I graduated from Powell in 06 and played in some ferocious battles at Maryville, but all of my friends and I still joke that the Rebels are the only team that will consistenly knock you on your butt, pick you back up, and tell you what an excellent job you did. I want to hate Maryville so bad that I can't stand it....they are just way too classy for that. I wouldn't expect any problems out of the Rebel faithful. I don't really know what to make of this game either. I don't know how much of an experience difference there is because Red Bank has been in this situation before. Coaching edge goes to Maryville although I think that RB has a really solid group of coaches. Maryville fans know this, but number 27 for the lions is one of the most impressive high school football players I've seen. The kid is huge and fast and his motor never stops. He had a run against Powell down the visitor sideline where Powell's safety hit the kid square in the thigh and he never broke stride and walked into the end zone. He's a beast. The loss of the Benford kid is going to be a big blow for the Lions. I don't doubt that they will rally around it, but I don't think you can question that he is a big time play maker for that team and he will be missed. I think his injury could be the difference. Ledbetter is solid at QB he doesn't seem make a lot of mistakes. Both teams are pretty solid in the trenches although I really think the edge goes to RB up front. So basically, I think Maryville has the better coaches and QB. Red Bank has better athletes and better linemen. When I try to think about it from an outsider's point of view I want to pick RB. Maryville turned the ball over against Powell which is very uncharacteristic and the running game wasn't as solid as it usually is for the Rebs. I think this is one of the more beatable teams that Maryville has fielded in a while, but I just can't pick against Maryville at home. Burnette, Douglas and CO. are going to find a way to get it done. I think it'll be a dog fight and I don't think it's gonna be pretty but I'll take Maryville by 4-7 points. I'll say 24-17 Maryville. Go get another one for 3-4A Rebs.
  25. I don't really see the problem with my discuusions to be honest with you. I have asked a question about the game in every post that I have made. I'm still awaiting a reply about South's offense....guess no one has the info or is willing to post it on a public forum which I suppose I understand. What's the story on the Fletcher kid? What year is he and is anyone interested in him? Seems like maybe he's a little big undersized to play big time college ball but he looked like one of the better players on the field in the game that I saw. He's going to be a handful for the Devils, I bet. And this is my last little side jaunt, Zach is doing well from what I've heard. He's playing baseball at the University of Memphis and the reciever you're referring to is Terrance Scott who has caught on at the University of Oregon via a JUCO.
