  1. On a related note, does anyone know how the state tournament is going to be run after realignment? I checked on the TSSAA website and they have wrestling expanding to 10 regions. Hard to see how that fits nicely with a 32 man bracket. Are they still going to qualify 4 per region?
  2. One problem with KNS coverage was they cut off (left out?) results of the 215 and 275 consolation finals. This isn't the first time this has happened. One gets the impression that this happens because they feel the wrestling results are the lowest on the totem pole and when they run out of space on the scoreboard page, they just lop off whatever they need to from wrestling. This may not be accurate but it sure feels that way. I guess it was more important that we have the names of all 20+ players that were penalized in the 2nd period of the ice bears - cottonmouths hockey game than it is to print the names of the boys who qualified 3rd and 4th in region at 215 and 275. SO, can anyone fill us in on the results of the consolation finals in 215 and 275.
  3. I started this post because I thought it would make interesting discussion, not to fuel bad feelings between individual programs. Many of the posts have been right on and added some constructive discussion. I am of the opinion that the team competition in dual meets brings out the best that the sport has to offer. I have seen young men wrestle the best match of their careers spurred by the desire to not let their team down. For some, the greatest moments of their career may come at a dual meet, and it may come from working for one more point or fighting off a pin and those point differences helped their team win. That is the essence of what makes this a great team sport. One way to encourage the team aspect of this sport is to have more team dual tournaments rather than only individual tournaments. Maybe I am wrong, but it seems that I am seeing more and more of these cropping up. As to delaying state duals til after the individual tournament, I am not sure. How does this work in states that run that way? Are teams still up for it after the individual tournament?
  4. How are pairings determined? At first I thought that it was a blind draw, but the TSSAA website handbook is not that specific.
  5. I am not trying to point fingers, but it seems there are some teams that think it is better to avoid state duals for some of the following reasons: 1) it's better for you at state if other wrestlers have not seen you before. Some of the top competition might be at state duals and they will learn something about you they might be able to use against you at state. 2) you might get hurt or beat up and weaken your chances at ind. regionals and state. Its better to use this time to heal any lingering injuries so you are as healthy as possible before ind. regionals and state. 3) the important measure of a team is how they place in the ind. state meet, not whether they win state duals. A counter arguement is: Many teams have no meets during the two weeks before regionals. Two weeks is a long time to go without competition. The team that goes to state duals stays sharp and therefore has an advantage over the others. Also, by facing some of your best competition at state duals, you can learn something about them that might help you in a future match at state. There also is the obvious honor of representing your region and the possibility of winning a state team title. State duals is the ultimate test of the team. How you feel about this may depend on whether you view wrestling more as a team sport or an individual sport. I thought a few of you might want to express an opinion.
  6. Here some points you missed: 152 Not clear where Landon Hall will go. He wrestled 152 a couple of times and I suspect he would go 152 at regionals. Also, what about Aaron O'Hearn (Bearden). Aaron has been state ranked most of the year. 189 Dwight Wilson (Karns) has beated Reveiz twice. He should be ranked above him. 215 Dixon of Seymour would be probably 6th on my list. I would put the boy from Powell (3rd), Matt Miller (Gibbs; 4th), Feigerle(5th) and Dixon (6th). Powell has beaten Miller, and beaten Feigerle(Karns) twice. The boy from Powell lost to Puckett(Grace). Feigerle lost to Miller, but has beaten Dixon twice. I know Dixon has placed in some tournaments, but I don't think he has beaten any of the other 5.
  7. WB beating Maryville is a surprise. Should be an interesting regional duals. The results of the Farragut vs. Karns match appeared in the Knoxville News Sentinel this morning. Made the front page of the sports section. There was some unfortunate info about Scott Dix interjected in the end of the article that suggests that Scott was cleared to return to wrestle but chose not to. If you check another thread on this forum, you can find a posting by Mr. Dix that summarizes what happened with Scott, and clearly says that Scott is not medically cleared to wrestle. We should all be proud of Scott's accomplishments and there is no reason to start any controversy about why he isn't wrestling. Some info on the Farragut-Karns match. 103 - Harless(K) TF 112 - Turner(F) MD 119 - Farinella(F) MD 125 - ?(F) P 130 - Mountain(F) P 135 - Karns - F 140 - Fender(K) MD 145 - Tisdale(K) TF 152 - Glenn(K) over Blankenship 14-12(OT) 160 - Harless(K) P 171 - Knox(F) P 189 - Wilson(K) 215 - Mohon(F) P 275 - Reviez(F) P The match started at 145. Farragut won the toss. This affected stategy as Karns wanted to flip 215 and 275 but had to send out the 215 first. When they sent their usual heavyweight out, Farragut countered by flip flopping as well sending Mohon out at 215 and holding Reviez to meet Feigerle at 275. The match was tied 22-22 after 112. The 119 was a pivotal match (see News Sentinel article), as were the 215/275 matchups. Best match was clearly the Glenn-Blankenship one. Inside 15s to go, Glenn had control but was down by one point. Made the decision to release and go for the take down and got it with less than 5s left. Then won the match by getting the takedown in overtime. A great high school wrestling match.
  8. This evening was the region 2 district duals. At Karns, #1 seed Karns defeated Powell and #2 seed Farragut defeated Halls in the semis. In the finals, Farragut won a hard fought match over Karns by 38-32, revenging a defeat of 38-35 earlier in the year. Surprise, surprise. The regional duels slated for this thursday will include the top two teams from each district so there is a possibility for a third meeting if these two teams make it through to the region finals. Anyone have any information on the other district dual results?
