There is no doubt who the powerhouses are in NET (Betsy, Greeneville over the last several seasons). I enjoy watching and hearing about their accomplishments. But I'm an old High School football fan through and through. I'd like to here some talk about other teams in the area. I always looked forward to the Times News and Bristol Herald Courier pre season High School football previews. Back when they really did an excellent job of reporting all the teams (Team Photos, individual pictures and good write ups on every team in the area. Since we don't get that type of coverage anymore i'd like to hear from some of you home team fanatics. Who are some of the talented players in the region and what other teams may sneak up and make a little noise this year.

I always enjoy reading the team previews on tricitiessports.com, they have the best NET coverage by far.

Malcolm Perry from Kenwood went the USNA Prep School route and it has obviously helped him.  Not sure if any negativity was gained thru his experience.

Yes, Malcolm was there when my son was also.  Malcolm is a great kid and is very talented.  Navy had several TN kids sign that year.  I remember 3 from the same highschool (Blackman maybe?) and they all left before the year was over and I know Malcolm and the Pittman kid have done well.  The experience was not all bad, I just feel that the Naval Academy could do a better job with NAPS.

Hope your son is doing well at West Point.  West Point is a neat place.  My son graduated from USMA in 2009 and made the decision to get out of the Army back in April.  The West Point experience was a great one for him.

That's awesome, tell your son thank you for his service.  My son is really liking it and seems to be thriving there. He is just finishing up his first round of TEE'S.

You are correct.  The prep school route isn't easy, and the success rate of a prep schooler to Service Academy graduation is not high, but it's not supposed to be.  As you are aware, the prep schools are for candidates who aren't quite ready to take on the academic, military, and athletic rigors of the USMA, USNA, or USAFA.  If they aren't a direct admission they need a year to adjust.  But the plus side is that after the year at Prep School they can walk away with no strings attached and their college eligibility clock hasn't begun since the Prep School is an extension of high school, and not the start of college.  The candidates are guaranteed admission in to the Academy, but they aren't obligated and can move on elsewhere should they decide that the Military life isn't what they are looking for.

And Army Prep was located at Fort Monmouth, NJ, until 2011 when Fort Monmouth was designated for closure by the Department of Defense.  And in spite of the fact that Army Prep is located on the Post at West Point, because of NCAA rules the Army Prep Cadets can't really have much to do with the Academy itself.  They have their own campus close to the US Mint.

Fortunately my son was a direct admission, so he didn't have to go the Prep School route, but we know several families whose sons had to go through that process.  A couple of them graduated from the Academy, and a couple decided to move on.  Like I said, it's not an easy road.

You are correct, neither way is an easy route.  My youngest is a Plebe at West Point this year (direct admission and not playing football) and my oldest was a USNA prep schooler (football recruit) who decided that route was not for him as did several members of the football team that year so I've seen both sides of the fence.  It's not easy but the USNA prep school instructors seemed to carry a grudge against athletes (which makes up a large portion of the prep schooler population).  Maybe we just had a bad experience.  Either way the service academies are a great education and I applaud this young man for his willingness to serve our country.  Good Luck at Navy!!

Good for him.  Having a son who went the Service Academy route I know what kind of commitment it takes to accept that challenge.  It's not an easy road.

I'll pull for he and Navy every game except for the second Saturday in December.  Loved watching him play against Maryville this past year.  Tremendous athlete, and obviously a kid of character.

Do you know if he is a direct admission to the USNA or if he will be going through the USNA Prep School?

I don't know this young man but I hope for his sake he can go straight to USNA and not the prep school route.  My son was a recent attendee at the USNA prep school (also a football signee) and it was not a good experience.  I'm not sure why USNA doesn't have the prep school close or on campus like West Point does but the atmosphere in Newport RI is sub par in relation to the Naval Academy.  The football coaches are way below standard and the instructors there are more determined to "weed" kids out then to help them excel.  I love the USNA coaches (Coach Niamat and Coach Ingram are great recruiters) but the USNA Prep School is a huge let down.

What happened to all the south fans? This use to be a huge huge rivalry game. You can go back years and look this game up on the boards and see we have lost a lot of South fans

Two straight losing seasons and the promise of the new Sullivan County high school have thinned the herd. South will put up a fight but won't have the athletes to compete tomorrow night. The QB is a great athlete and the defensive front isn't bad.  56 - 20 is my prediction.

This isn’t the same Greeneville team. Greeneville will mercy rule South yet again

That is a good possibility, I know GreenEville is the best team around this year and should have a clear path to the title.  I was just reminding your fans that it wasn't that long ago that you lost to some "Clowns".

Well done, the kids might be reading. But for real though, I know the mentality  of the program and it's leadership "This is why we do what we do"

Couple weeks of glorified scrimmages against some more of the Sullivan County Clowns to sharpen up after the bye week

Bust Betsy's butt then do it again once more in the quarters bc we all know Anderson  County ain't talking bout nothing. Sweet revenge for '98.

South has been down the last couple of years (last year mainly due to the season ending injuries of something like 9 starters by the time we played the big Greene), but don't forget those "Sullivan County Clowns" sent you guys packin just 3 short years ago.

Those guys should wear skirts.Just kidding ,most girls don't cry as much as the DB announcers.I always try and pick up the other teams radio because they are such homers it's sickening. It's like watching CNN if you want to get a fair story about president Trump. The refs always make a bad call or two during a game but it's not always just against DB,they are equally shtty when it's a bad crew.

Agreed 100%, it's comical.  I refuse to listen to a DB game on the home station.

I've got a question for anyone that's been to a South game in the last year on the visitors side.Is there a place to park behind the visitors stands if I bring someone that has health problems and can't walk a mile to get there.Or do we need to sit on the home side and forget about it.

I believe the parking behind the visitor stands is handicap only parking so if the person you bring has one of the handicap placards you should be good to park there.

  11. What kind of football team do you have this year rebels?

I think South will be very similar to last year, they will be better in some areas due to a lot of underclassmen getting a lot of experience last season but I don't see them getting to .500.  If the QB can stay healthy that will definitely help but given the track record of the past 2 seasons and the lack of depth and talent in the backfield with him I'm afraid he will stay beat-up.  Especially if the play calling doesn't change.

  12. McGue is at Army. Malcolm White is at UTC. Mikey White is at Western Carolina. Elijah Mathes is at ETSU. Justin Bedard is at Cornell. Reed Hayes is at Vanderbilt (chose to play baseball but did have multiple offers for football). The SH kicker from 2 yrs ago is at Western Kentucky. The TE from 2 yrs ago is at Austin Peay. Their names escape me at the moment. I know I'm forgetting at least 3 or 4 more. Then, this year's team will have at the least 3 or 4 sign football scholarships; Tolley, Martin and Smith for sure. Who are all the scholarship kids for Crockett? Just curious. I'll agree that Bosken did a good job of getting his kids some looks though.

I wasn't trying to insult SH, I know they have talent and the point I was trying to make was that for the talent at Crockett, Bosken has done a great job of finding those kids that want to play at the next level a place to do that.

  13. Bosken may have done a good job of trying to get his players attention from schools but I seriously seriously doubt Crockett has more kids playing college ball than Science Hill or DB. SH, the last 3-4 years especially, has an awful lot of kids currently playing college football on scholarship.

Coach 423T stated above that Bosken has helped 13 kids from Crockett sign at the next level.  I don't remember too many DB kids signing lately, a few linemen (Norris and another kid from 2 years ago) then of course Foreman, Swafford, Trammell from 5 years ago.  Science Hill has a few too but not sure of the number (McGue, White and a few others that I can think of).  I know at South we have only had 2 kids sign scholarships at the next level in the last 3 years.  So for what he has to work with I think that's pretty impressive.  A lot of local coaches don't even make an effort to promote their kids.

  14. BlueDevil who's your team you pull for jw? Bosken will def be a tough act to follow he did so much more for Crockett than just coach football. He help bring pride excitement and a winning mentality to the football team school and community. Worked hard to raised unreal amount of money to get new uniforms improve the weight room field house and new equipment. We need to hire someone who's willing to work that hard on the the Xs and Os and on the program it's self and stay at DC for more than jus 3 or 4 years. Its def hard to run a 5A program with very few assistants but A lot of that's on him he ran A lot of coaches off I think whoever they get will bring a few with him hopefully. The discipline incidents didn't happen because of not having enough staff member you can't have a coach in every room babysitting. It only takes a few kids to make dumb decisions to ruin it for everyone.

From what I could tell Bosken worked harder than any coach in this area on getting his players attention from the next level.  Crockett has more kids playing college ball or at least getting attention from colleges than anyone; and it's not because of the overwhelming talent at DC, that comes from a coach busting his tail for his players.

  15. Robbie Norris for Head Coach. Who would be in charge of naming the school and mascot?

Although Norris would be the best choice from the current Sullivan County stock I think the administration would pick someone without ties to any of the current Sullivan County schools as the head coach and then make up the staff with some current staffers.  From what I heard Norris doesn't like the media/spotlight part of being a head coach and with this being a new large school that will be very competitive the social demands of the head coach could be overwhelming.

  16. Word was that Hilton had the Gate City job last year but they wouldn't let him bring assistants so he declined the position. I think this is a great move on South's part as he is supposed to be a great up and comer. As stated before, when this years sophomores are seniors, South should be formidable again.

At Colonial Heights Middle the sophomores went 8-0 with conference championship, the freshman went 7-1 and were conference co-champions, this years 8th grade class went 10-0 with conference championship and Region 1-AA championship, the 7th grade class is stacked with talent too. When these 7th graders are freshman, South will have the most talent they've had in the building at one time in a few years, top to bottom.

You are correct, I think everyone close to the program knew that after the class of 2015 graduated there would be a drastic dropoff in overall talent for a few years.  This years 2-8 season was not a shocker especially with the talent walking the halls not playing football.  As you stated there is a lot of talent/skill in the pipeline whether those kids end up at South, DB or the new consolidated school is yet to be seen.  Hilton will be a great head coach too (my opinion anyway).

  17. Are any of the sophomores that quit playing looking at coming back out for their junior years next year?

From what I understand most of the ones that quit were juniors last year and were being overlooked in favor of some athletic sophomores.  Since the coaching staff didn't really change any only reorganized I don't see those kids wanting to come back.  Maybe the loss of the 4 or 5 seniors would open up a slot or two for those kids but unlikely.  I see mostly junior starters next season with some sophomores mixed in and a few of the upcoming seniors like the QB and the only returning RB with varsity experience.  I predict another lean year for the Rebs in 2017 with things looking brighter after that (depending on the school consolidation of course).

  18. I would suggest someone from the outside without any preconceived impressions. Line em up, find the best young men, but coach them all to avoid the problems of the last few years.

That would be good but with the Sullivan county school situation changing soon I would say not many outsiders would bite. I think it's Hilton's job if he wants it.

  19. There is no excuse for a 70 point loss. Especially at a school that has always been highly competitive even in down years. Injuries cannot be the only problem. All teams have injuries. Some years more than others. I would have thought South would have had a little bit better depth than that. They usually field a pretty large number of players. Maybe their numbers are down for a reason ?

South's numbers were way down to begin with this year.  Several juniors jumped ship when sophomores were given the nod over them back in the spring.  Add to that the many injured and South is only dressing around 30 kids with the majority of those being freshmen and sophomores.  I think only 4 or 5 seniors remain uninjured at this point.  I'll be glad when this season is over!!!
