  1. Surprised but not surprised they found them a decent coach but I guess with in a lot of diffucult situations it never fails someone pops up and says "Here Hold My Beer". If that were me taking that job those assistants would have to hit the road and the parents that created this mess have two choices , keep your pie hole shut or stay at home on Friday Night. All I can say is good luck in putting this dumpster fire out and if you don't that will be two coaches in a row that gave up a lot to get nothing in return.

We’ll be fine Barn. Excited to see these two trade in the Florida Gators colors for the Silver and Blue!

I still have a lot of good memories and really want the best for this program, Had the best times going to places I had never been and opened my eyes to a lot of the smaller schools. Won't ever forget.

They gave up a ton of points in their tenure at CCHS. I think this will be the biggest challenge they will face getting enough quality depth and not have to use too many two way players.  They will make football fun on the offensive side and you will see remarkable improvement there and marketing the program. They will get more players out and their fundraising strategies will be off the charts.

Was hoping they may pick up a good defensive coach that is available but what do I know about football only been a season ticket holder of the winningest program in the State of Tennessee for all my life besides the ones I played there. If your defense is bad you'll be in for a rough ride

I thought of Everett but was not sure who it was combined with from memory. Porter was the one I could not remember at all.

I had a coworker that went to Madisonville High.

Rhea County High is a combination of Spring City and Dayton High Schools.

Two schools in Chattanooga that are gone are Chattanooga City Dynamos and Kirkman Hawks. Chattanooga Central was moved from downtown to Harrison,

I've done so mush research on East Tennessee of the schools that are now gone I may make a thread on these schools and what happened to them, I think it would be very interesting for most of the folks that enjoy the culture and hopefully some will ad to it on what they know.

Walker Valley is going to be like Heritage. Heritage was the combination of Walden, Townsend and I think another HS I can't remember the name of (case in point). No one will remember the old schools.

Same for Sequoyah, Madisonville and Vonore are no more.

Everett Bulldogs, Walland Indians and Townsend Tigers last year was in 1976 football season before closing to go into Heritage. In 1979 William Blount opened taking in Friendsville Falcons, Lanier Eagles while about 350 or so were moved from Heritage that would have been zoned for WB and a school 2 miles away Porter Panthers was fed into Heritage to offset the ones going to WB. There was such a bitter rival between Walland and Porter I'm pretty sure that was the safest way to put them together after the rivalry was gone and done with. Madisonville Tornadoes and Vonore Blue Devils last year was the in1994 and both were pathetic in football as you could get it and a big reason Sequoyah has been so bad. There were many times it was so bad at Vonore only 10-12 came out for football and they had to go out and beg kids to play to avoid throwing in the towel and not having a team that season and all the coaches they had would quit after one season to get out of that mess. That's one big reason Sweetwater was 2-8, Sequoyah 2-8 and Tellico was 1-9. Monroe County is one big mess led by a pack of idiots.

THis was an article in the Knoxville News-Sentinel November 7 1965. They sure treat their coach there a lot differently today.

Can you imagine today's parent trying to over throw King Berrong because their freshman son was better than Kippy Brown in their opinion.

Data was a year ahead of me. I remember her in the halls. Towered over almost everyone, The Bearettes went 36-0 her senior year,

Bradley also had a real good girl's basketball coach at that time. I had a lot of good friends that played for Everett and that was the only game they would lose.

Little bit of history off the cuff. Please remember the numbers I use are approximate from what I remember at the time.

Charleston High School was one of those Kindergarten through High school situations. Pretty much all the enrollment come from Charleston itself with a few from the outskirts. The school typically carried around 300 to 500 students.

Bradley was then one of the largest high schools in the state, with enrolment generally around 2,000 plus. in 1977 it was like 2100 students and before they moved the 9th grade to the middle schools it hit 2400. (My freshmen class started with 600+ students).

Cleveland High at the time had around 1000 to 1200 students as best I can remember.

So, when they built Walker Valley, they did away with Charleston High School, in favor of a new name and all that entails. I thought it was a bit of slap in the face of the Charleston legacy which while not great did have some good history. And Walker Valley still tries to embrace the names of the players but avoids the "Charleston name tag" history. (I thought why not keep the name of the Panthers but what do I know).

But the upshot was that the county had and has open enrollment. You can go to either HS in the county, but the feeder of Walker Valley is supposedly Ocoee Middle and the feeder to Bradley is now Lake Forest (formerly Trewhitt) Middle School.

So essentially, they took in Charleston High School (there is still Charleston Elementary on the original campus and the football field and stands still exist) and split the student population of Bradley when creating Walker Valley.

Because of the growth Cleveland High is now the largest school in the county, since they split Bradley with Walker Valley. Bradley is now a small 6A school and Walker Valley a large 5A school with Cleveland 6A.

That was a good rundown on how it all came to be on Walker Valley. If you don't ask questions time flies and eventually there won't be anyone to ask. Back when I was in school Bradley had a girl named Data Caldwell if I remember right and she was 6-4 or 5 and they were unbeatable. Still remember watching them and the Everett Girls play a couple of times.

Wow. That’s a huge jump in enrollment. The secret seems to be out about our great state!

Had to be a spill over from Bradley or possibly Cleveland, there were no other schools closed that went into Walker Valley.

Any chance someone like that would apply again?  Again..serious question.

Bob Polston passed away back in 2011. He had a two great assistant coaches in Joel Helton who went on to coach Knox Central for 27 years and Don Ward who took over after Bob retired after the 1978 season for 11 years  and also was head coach at South Doyle 9 years.

  11. Speaking of DB, I just ran in to Coach Ted Wilson at Walmart in Alcoa just a few minutes ago. Believe it or not he had on a Dobyns Bennett jacket. I actually spent a couple hours with him out at his house last week and he told me a lot of great things and how blessed he was to have taken that job and how well everyone treated him. He told me he was looking for the paint machine to line the field off when he was up there and he was trying to find out where it was and the superintendent came by and told him you don't do that job here we've got somebody else that does that for you. He also told me when he applied for that job they gave him a figure and he told them that was only $3,000 more than he was making at Maryville and he didn't think he could move his family up there for that and a couple hours later they called back and added another 10,000 and he took the job. He had a hip replacement and they had to go in two times after because it didn't go well but he is out and doing well for a man that's 89 or 90 year old.

  12. Last year I watched them and Carter play on TV and I'm surprised the coach finally put in the all star basketball player at QB and almost pulled it off. How could a coach not know he had a better second string QB. It was like night and day difference. I would do what ever it took to get Stevens back there.

  13. Any word from the Part Time-Part Time A.D. at Greenback on this mess. This whole incident reminds me of my younger day's when I had this friend who would go into a bar on the strip in Knoxville and cause a big fight and come running out with 6 or 7 people running after him while we waited down the street a few blocks to pick him up before anyone caught him.

  14. Better go hire Jeff Miner as their defensive coach before one of these other schools do that are assembling staffs right now if their tenture at GCA will be a positive one. Every one of their games at Campbell County looked like Tarzan on offense but Jane on defense. They did keep Campbell County at a respectable level and I'm sure they had plenty of obstacles in their way doing so. I hated they left because I'm sure their program will go back to the dumpster fire because the leaders there will run to K-Mart for a Blue Light Special because that's how the whole county is ran.
