Just to clarify, are you implying that Milan has not been doing anything in the offseason?  Or are you making a general statement about all coaches?

General statement about all coaches. I don't know why it takes High School 2+ months to choose a coach. Especially in this situation, Morris was going to retire anyway regardless of how far they were going in the playoffs, and I would assume the administration knew that prior to their loss at Covington. I don't know why it takes 2 months to figure out a head coach. Milan isn't the only school, there are many schools that takes this long for some reason.

My statement was towards coaches, because coaches are trying to get as much money as they can, without doing anything teaching related. I understand not teaching during the fall, but at least teach two classes during the spring. That's all. I'm not throwing a shot at Morris or anything like that.

  3. This is odd, but I don't think Milan is that "valuable" of a job as it is compared to the past. Going .500 hurts, losing to Liberty in the playoffs hurts as well. In addition to that, you have a football stadium that is not on school property (yes, it's a few hundred yards away, but still), and the facilities probably aren't the best. No offense. Amazing and passionate fan base. However, if the school board is not willing to open up their checkbooks, then that practically means there is going to be a lack of support for the future coach.

Think about this, I know USJ is a private school, and therefore, I doubt they release how much money teachers/coaches received based on salary because they are a private school. But USJ was able to bring in Rusty Bradley from Knoxville, and all the Knoxville people said it was a home run hire and that the Bruins will win a state title before the year 2020 if his offensive scheme works, which fits at USJ. In order for USJ to get Rusty Bradley, they had to pay the price. I guarantee you Rusty got a pay raise, in addition to that, he wanted things like a new play clock, upgrades to the practice field, and a new locker room (they added TV's and electronic gaming systems) for the players. They paid the price to get Rusty Bradley. Rusty knew the expectation is to win state championships at USJ, nothing less. Poor USJ, they got Rusty Bradley, did all these things to upgrade their facilities, only to see Rusty leave after year one. But USJ supported Rusty.

I don't know what to expect from Milan, but saying that you want a home run hire, and not doing whatever it takes to bring in the guy, sounds a little hypocritical. However, I don't think it's fair for a football coach to get paid significantly more than teachers, and not teach at all. I mean, do something in the offseason for once. High School football has a long offseason.

great post trader....you were spot on accurate....I don't know of any public school football coach in TN that coaches only...no teaching responsibilities.. and gets teacher pay plus coaching supplement....and I was in the business for 30 years...some are administrators...assistant principals like Alcoa's Coach Rankin for example.....but to coach only with no teaching or any other  responsibilities and make teacher pay plus coaching supplement?....I might be old school but I've never heard of it....

McNairy Central's coach Franks is probably the only one. He is also the head baseball coach down in Selmer and the AD. So I'm assuming he's an administrator. Can't image a baseball coach, a football coach, and an Athletic Director being a teacher on top of that.

Basketball in West Tennessee is WAY down... but statewide, it is very competitive. With me being from West TN, I wished the basketball was better than what it was, but right now, it's not... Westview is the cream of the crop out here, and it's not even close - basically sleep walking through these games.

Greenfield has a good team, and hopefully for this region's sake, they pull through and make it to the state tournament.

Basketball statewide is in great shape... Fortunately, I get to see a lot of these teams across the state. I would say Tennessee is a top 5 state right now in terms of girls basketball. A lot of really good teams!

    Talent? or Team wise?

I have to agree girls basketball is well and strong in 8 aa.  we have Baxter and Macon County they both made the state tournament Baxter of course won . I. think basketball is pretty good here and it is sure fun to watch unless you're on the loose in the stick lol

    Somebody got to win state.

  7. Say what you want about officiating, but officials are just like teachers. Regardless of how many years an official has been officiating, they’ll always deal with 14-18 year old kids,  which are way smarter, faster, stronger, and bigger than the athletes in the last century. Sometimes,  officials can’t keep up with the athletes (both on the basketball court and football field), and they know it. However, they want to keep officiating for as long as they want, which is understandable, before reality kicks in and they call it quits.

However, I won’t sit here and call a veteran official (10+ years) more “quality” than an official that is less than 10 years in service. Time shouldn’t be the determine factor whether an official is a “quality” official or not.

Well, it's time again for the offseason...and as much as I love basketball, it's a sad time for me. I'm already looking forward to kickoff of the 2018 football season. Every year, right after the state championship games, I like to see if I can take a crack and predict the next season's state champions. I didn't do great for 2017, but I did manage to correctly call 4 of the 6 Division 1 winners (D-II drug me down, haha). It would be fun if everyone joined in and made their picks with me! If nothing else, it'll be entertaining to look back on this time next year.

As a disclaimer, I mean NO disrespect to any teams via lack of selection. Some of these are based on starters returning, and some are just a wild guess and a hope to luck up and be right. These are also not all teams that I happen to be cheering for :)

    1A: Greenback

    2A: Trousdale County

    3A: Alcoa

    4A: Greeneville

    5A: Knoxville Catholic

    6A: Oakland

    DII-A: Nashville Christian

    DII-AA: Grace Christian Academy (Knoxville)

    DII-AAA: Ensworth

Hey, West Tennessee, let's just go ahead and cancel the 2018 football season!!!

I've been officiating for 7 season now. I'll give my observations.

There is an official shortage. It hasn't hit as hard in TN (especially East TN) as it has Alot of places, but it's coming. Part of it is more are retiring than starting. And those few who are starting, even fewer are sticking with it. I could write an entire essay covering the reasons for this, but I'll have the main reason right here. Even since I started, it's been a trend across the board that:

    A. Players are continually more disrespectful than ever, year after year.

    B. Coaches are less knowledgeable about the game and the rules of the game and increasingly belligerent.

    C. Parents/fans are completely out of control.

When I was in school 15ish years ago, you always had a couple old folks or an angry dad that hollered at and heckled officials, but there were only a handful. Coaches rarely ever raised their voices at officials. Sure they tried to work an official, but as a whole they were professional and respectful. And players NEVER talked backed or argued with officials. And on the off chance they did, they were yanked from the game by the coach.

Officials in this day in age have an increasingly hostile work environment, and it gets worse every year. That is why you can't get anyone new to get in officiating and actually stick with it.  It's always the officials fault. If your kid loses, you tell them "it's OK, it's not your fault, the refs sucked." Doesn't have anything to do with the team shooting 21% from the floor or the fact that Junior was 3 of 10 from the free throw line. It's the refs' fault.

The fans now a days are in general uninformed and entitled. They think they know the rules, but in reality a large percentage of them don't even have a clue. They think cause they paid $5 for the ticket, they can do whatever they want. Well try this. Go to the grocery store, and watch the bag boy. When he makes what you perceive as a mistake while bagging, yell at the top of your lungs "You're an idiot! Better keep your day job! and see what happens. You will certainly be asked to leave at least, and possibly even have the law called on you for disorderly conduct. Fans pay for that ticket and think they can leave cultural norms of how to conduct themselves like a civilized human being at the door.

The reason fans are seeing a decline in the quality of officiating is because there are fewer quality officials, and the ones you have are the ones you have. And the reason there are fewer quality officials is due in large part to the fans. There's no way around that fact.

Totally disagree. Officials leaving saying that the "coaches, fans, and players" are the reason why there are less officials than the past is simply bologna, BS, whatever. I'm not buying that, and I will never buy that. It's a SCAPEGOAT! simple.

An officials job is to ignore the criticism from fans. It's their job, simple. If an official feels like he/she made the right call and gets booed, or criticize by coaches/players, why bother? The official felt like he/she made the right call.

To sit here and blame it all on players, coaches, and fans is garbage and asinine. Sorry, just not buying it.

The only thing I have to add to this is there should be a physical requirement. The officials should be physically able to get to the right spot on the floor to put themselves in a position to make the right call. The games I have seen this year have been pretty bad and most of the missed calls come from the officials not being in the right spot. Not because they are not trying but because they are not physically able to get there.

Having a physical fitness requirement will help but not eliminate bad officiating. As long as humans are officiating there will be bad calls.

Agree and this is something I want. If you tell an official that you have to run a certain distance in a certain mile, then you'll piss officials off and they'll quit. A lot of these officials enjoy calling games and do nothing in the offseason to improve themselves as officials. Then, if someone questions themselves as "why didn't you run or maintain your shape in the offseason?" The official will come back and say "Well heck, we're only getting paid $95 a game."

What I just said primarily is to the older officials. If they younger officials maintain their shape and physicality, then they will probably won't be an high school official for long, they'll move up to the college level when they're more experience.

Point is, officials will do anything and everything to get more pay in games, but less work (off the field/court) to do.

  11. So this is a weird post of what I am about to say because I officiate Football in a local association, but I agree with points on fans side and the referees side. First let me say this, I could be wrong, but I don't think I am wrong. In basketball, they have camps during the summer at UTM where officials can come up to Martin and work a few summer games. If you attend those camps, a referee eligibility to call postseason games are still available. If you don't attend those camps, a referee lose the eligibility to call those postseason games. So I do believe basketball does have camps where they force referees to call games in order to obtain their postseason eligibility. They totally leave the option up to the referee.

Second, assigners are a problem because they will have "their buddies" that'll get all the games and leave others out to hang. Send officials to schools far away knowing that game will be a blowout. They'll do this to tell the official "you haven't earned the right to call bigger games" while they're buddies are just as good as the official that calls the bad games. It can be very political at times.

Third, there's no film, well, in football there isn't. Officials call there games, and they leave. They'll receive their evaluation score if they're being evaluated. However, there's no game film for the official that just called his/her game. Why? I don't know. The technology in this world and we're less than 30 days from entering 2018, I'm sure this is something that can happen. There are officials that have no access to the game film that they just worked.

Humboldt has a"WOW" applicant...unless they get another that I wouldn't expect, they probably have their man. This will be a head scratcher for sure! All depends upon whether or not a better program offers that he has applied to as well.

Just curious, who? Try to give me a hint where it doesn't "leak" any info. I'm kinda curious to see where Humboldt goes from. No excuse for not competing with Huntingdon, Dresden, and now Lake County for 1A playoffs.

It's actually likely one of the reasons that TN has such a hard time getting a good coach, Tennessee just doesnt have the talent that the other states have, so makes it harder to recruit.

Tennessee has had their fair share of great coaches, but failed to maintain them. What I am about to say is a shot at Jackson-Madison County Schools. Jackson have four high schools, all four schools sent a team to the state tournament. All these athletes and coaches work constantly hard, and the school-board does not do anything in terms of updating facilities or congratulating the teams. There's no reward for the athletes and coaches that work hard. Therefore, coaches see no support, they leave. Liberty had Tyler Turner who coached football, and they went to the 3A state championship game against Alcoa. Granite, Turner was going to leave anyway, but he left near Memorial Day to head down to 6A Olive Branch (MS). Olive Branch went 0-11 in 2016, now they're 12-1 and has a game Friday. School systems are not supporting their athletes and coaches.

Second, there are coaches that are stubborn and want to have this offense and will run this offense regardless of the players. Coaches need to run their offense based off the players they have. But they won't. If I know I'm a receiver, I want to go to a school that throws the ball. It utilizes talent. But there's a lot of offenses that has a certain offense that ruins a player and his talent.

Third, I don't think the state of Tennessee do a good job of developing players. But that's just me.

Fourth, our playoff system is so run down, that every team pretty much gets in the playoffs, and you see us (posters) complain saying that this class or that class is weak, because of the playoffs system. Majority of the time, the playoffs really determines whether if this class is strong or not.

West Tennessee has been pretty good this year but we haven't had the history and tradition compared to Middle and East Tennessee schools.

Lausanne will win D2-AA, but that's it. Huntingdon was suppose to win it in 1A, but they lost and all we have is Lake County which the Falcons are underdogs to Cornersville. 2A is UC, but I'll pick CA over the Tornadoes. 3A is Covington, but they'll have to play perfect in order to stay with Pearl Cohn. 4A is Haywood. Brighton is underdogs to Beech, that's 5A, and the winner of Oakland/Maryville will win it in 6A.

Also, a lot of our teams would get destroyed to Middle/East Tennessee teams. We also don't have a lot of 5A and 6A schools which hurts our perception a lot.

I’ll take that back,  West Tennessee has had a terrible year of football.

LOL. It would interfere with soccer/volleyball and girls basketball. The amazing thing about having softball in the spring is that is girls can play volleyball/soccer, then basketball, then softball. Some smaller schools need those athletes.

What Haywood did a year ago is of no concern because well, it was a year ago! They're a one woman team ( Jamirah Schutes ) and will struggle mightily this season. I'm sure that Jamirah scored most of those 35 points. The other girls need more work on fundamentals. CC should have scheduled a team like Memphis Central or Martin Westview if they were looking for better competition out west. I'm sure the CC coaches didn't know at the time of scheduling that this would be a down year for Haywood.

Agreed, and they also lost their head coach, Baird (I think that's how you spell it) to Independence over the summer.
