I have no clue, but Bolivar looked very strong when they crushed us last year.

This game will have a big impact on 7AAA standing.

Don't know if this game will have a huge impact on the standings or not. Just truly believe that the winner of Milan/Bolivar will finish first with the Winner of SGC/Covington finishing 3rd. If Bolivar plays Bolivar football, the Tigers will win pretty easily.

    Bolivar 42, South Gibson 20.

No mystery at all. Most interested schools will probably sit back and take a wait & see approach now b/c of the ACL injury. Tasia actually has a nice jumpshot but most high school guards can't keep her out of the lane so she rarely has to take shots. Just drive and feed the bigs and shooters. A few D1s have still shown interests, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with playing NAIA or D2 ( even D3 ). The goal is a free education. I wish her well and hope she has a big senior season.

You're wrong, or you have a totally different vision. I always tell kids that "go where your heart is" and not worry about the money when it comes to choosing a university to attend for the next four years. I know somebody that turned down a full ride to be in the band at UTM just to be in The Pride at Knoxville, which she got a $300 dollar scholarship at best. If you're telling kids 'it's all about the money' then you're putting pressure in them to find the cheapest place to go. Just my $.02

as much as I agree...and I do...NS always brings it vs liberty, no matter how good or bad they are...they have no business taking the field on Friday nights, but ive seen worse teams than that take down a Liberty squad unfortunately...

I have pegged NS and SS as wins for Tech before season started so we shall see...Trenton let everyone know all too well what rivalries are like this past weekend

True, very true. And it has to do with a tough schedule. Germantown, Haywood, Milan, D-Burg, and Briarcrest are no jokes. Unfortunately, I did put down Chester County and SS as easy wins for the Indians, even though Chester may not be a guarantee win. Haywood beat us physically, speed, and size. Something about Hookfin teams and how they can get really big in a quick period of time. It's evident our boys aren't ready, and we will probably be winless into October because CC and SS are 2 of our last 3 games. Briarcrest is sandwich in between.

will not fall to Liberty in the playoffs

In addition, you guys will be fine against North Side. The Indians lack of experience is showing and the kids are getting blind by the lights. No fight.

Theres not the shortage thats being made out to be. Its the same old bs politics justvlike anything else. Same officials who suck up and kiss ___ continue to get all the games or the bigger games where the newer officals or the ones that refuse to kiss it suffer. At least its that way in West TN. Yes I agree way too many old out of shape lazy officals continue to steal a check in every sport they work

Agree. That's why I'm simply saying show me proof of numbers telling me there's a shortage. Giving the "newer" guys the games that aren't worth attending to will get old quick and will make them leave. Just like working in a restaurant business, want to see someone leave your business, give them crappy hours. And it might be a good official that walks out the door because he's constantly working crappy games, just happens that he is young .

Kids now days want immediate gratification. Football is a sport that teaches delayed gratification. A football players works in the weight room, the practice field and the video room all year for the guaranty of the of 10 games a year. So kids gravitate toward sports like basketball and baseball where you play 2 or 3 games a week. Plus summer league games. Unfortunately life is not immediate gratification. Kids think that when they finish school they are going to go straight into upper management or higher. They do not understand it takes time to work up through life. And that is what football can teach kids.

Spot on BigEd, that was probably your best post here on the T, and I am not being sarcastic. Just seems like we all want instant success, but forget about the word and patience and what it means.

Reid steps down as head coach..but supposedly remains as an assisteant

The chances of him remaining as an assistant will be slim. He simply drove that program down and quit on the kids. I don't know what to do if I am Humboldt, but I will certainly look into hiring a young and upcoming assistant that will bring a positive vibe into Humboldt football. Good news for Humboldt is that they have time to evaluate their program, if they are willing to do that. They also may have to open the paycheck a little bit, but we all have something to say about Humboldt. They simply have the talent to make a deep playoff run year in and year out. No business for this team to not play Huntingdon in November.

Ok well if you think uc should had beat us or scored why dont you just tell your teams coach to add us to a schedule we wont back down and when our young me hear of this it might just double 41 we respect other teams once a running clock is in play we play to win not to embarrass. This pole isnt even about mayfield but if any team thinks there better than uc and think they can stop a team that put up 300 plus yards and keep them scoreless then prove it I bet you will be on the side line wanting it to end uc is a good team and they will not stop until final whistle. And if your team is all that why are you not on grid iron glory until you play uc they will win the state title mark my words down. It kills me to see fans and polls put down a team cause of one game that don't matter pride was the only thing won or lost in this game. Some say ky football is weak well play the team that they played and you will have a different opinion also. Hands in the air shakes my head stop looking at the score look at the yardage first downs and other stats before you think you can beat UNION CITY TORNADOES

A few things, my team could probably beat Union City in the past, but they can't this year because my team lacks talent and depth this year. I hate using 'rebuilding' to describe a high school football team, but my team fits into the 'rebuilding' category.

Second, I never downplayed Mayfield. I simply said that the "bend don't break" motto on defense is rarely successful come playoff time. Yes, points is the only stat that matters. But 300 yards is a lot for a team that simply runs the football just to get 4 yards.

I've seen some crazy posters on CoachT, but seeing someone who's from a different state puts you close to the top. I mine as well go to CoachW and talk high school football to Wyomians or CoachV and talk high school football to Vermontans. Should I?

I guess my explanations are getting lost on you TN folk. I will break it down for you a bit. The reason UC looked night and day different was due to the talent on the other side. I tried explaining this earlier. Our goal isn't necessarily to stop an offense cold turkey. If we do, that's nice but, we will bend. The idea is that we make the team work down the field over a long series. If it takes 10-12 plays for a high school team to complete a drive, the chances are very high that along the way they will commit a costly penalty or turnover. We have the speed and all other aspects to allow us to do just that. In most games, the other team will have more penalty yardage and turnovers. This is a staple of Catdinal football. The way you can tell if a team is good after playing us, in most instances, is if they were close in yardage. That may not ever equate to points though. UC is good. I just think TN small school football needs to catch up as a whole.

Y'all "bend don't break" is a very good philosophical defense for the regular season, but is it a very good strategy on defense come playoff time? 300 yards on defense, but gave up 0 points? Give yourself a pat on the back, but what happened if UC scored four touchdowns? Sometimes, teams get lucky and teams don't. Sometimes, the "bend don't break" defense doesn't bend on a Friday night, it just breaks. And if that happens in a playoff game, that stinks.

This guy doesn't know what he's talking about. He should never be allowed to vote again.

He's trying his best. Gotta give him the benefit of the doubt. There's usually two guys at the Sun, but one of them moved over to the education department two weeks ago and left sports, leaving one guy to do 40+ High Schools to cover and having to cover football, volleyball, girls soccer, cross country, golf, and preparing for both boys and girls basketball, which is not an easy job to do. Not trying to make an excuse for him, but I feel bad for the guy. He simply does have a passion to cover high school sports, which something that we as normal people should praise him for. We as people often criticize journalists for being a 'homer' to one or two schools and/or not giving our school any credit.

I guess they just support basketball then. Because coach Abernathy has their interest. Sorry but the truth is Reid is not a high school head coach. Parents will support if the coach is engaged. Ask Shaq when he is here for the basketball program.

They'll support basketball only in the month of February. I've been to a few of their home games in previous years and the attendance has been average. To me, getting Shaq to Jackson showed somewhat of a desperation.  If they have money in their programs, Shaq probably wouldn't be coming to Jackson.

  12. We can all sit here on our electronic device and bash Coach Reid and Humboldt High all they want, but that is unfair to Coach Reid. Truth is, Humboldt has no pride in their school. There's a lack of community support that supports their Vikings. I have no idea how many bottoms are sitting in Humboldt's stadium on Friday nights in the fall. Something I need to look into. I talked to a assistant at Humboldt and he just mainly said that their are athletes at Humboldt have scholarships to play college football but shoot themselves in the foot and stay home. Who's fault is that? Coach Reid? The athlete? Or the parent(s) of that athlete? Sometimes, the community fails too, not saying that this is all on the communities fault. But Humboldt lost 20+ seniors for a 1A school, of course they aren't going to be extremely competitive this year. I didn't think Coach Reid will ever get Humboldt to that 'level' that we are all expecting, but next time I want to see the Humboldt community to support their Vikings, or do a better job at it.

Big Ed, If TCA were to start off 4-0 with wins over Adamsville and USJ, would you then stop sandbagging and poor mouthing the one legged boys?  If they were 4-0, miraculously they would probably have 40 plus kids just like Trynottosuck said.  Kids would come out of the wood work to be a part of the winning team.  Probably would add no depth, but it would at least give you some tackling dummies to beat up on in practice.

I said that because it's insulting to the players. What I mean is this, in 2012-2014, North Side would always start 2-0/3-0 on their season. We have about 65 players that dressed out (sophomores-seniors only) unless a Freshman can produce on Friday night, but unlikely that rarely happens. When we got off to that 3-0 start and the temperature drops into the high 70's in September, that's when we saw about 5 players randomly on our team. Unfortunately, those 5 players rarely got playing time, and if they did, it would be in blow out games. They mostly were JV players. It may or may not happen everywhere, but it especially happens at North Side. Which in my opinion, it's not fair to the players that worked all June and all July in the heat, 7 on 7's, and scrimmages. I don't know if the TSSAA has a rule, but I wish they can make a rule where all schools have to turn in their roster by their 1st game on Friday night, which will unfortunately kill schools like Middle College, MASE, and TCA for an example. I let BigEd and TCAIntense slide on the lack of the depth in football, but I don't let them slide on that in basketball and baseball because they always have 20 players on basketball and baseball teams.

The dogs were called off. The offense ran 5 different plays all night. Only threw the ball 7 times. If they dont want to tackle you can't help that. And their offense was anemic. Now as far as Lexington they are down. In years past they had athletes that would compensate being out of position. Not so this year. FRA will be another win for SGC. The only thing you guys need to do is build wrinkles into the offense and defense. As the year goes on you guys get very predictable.  Not sure what your skill set will let you do on throwing the ball but something has to change as the year goes. At the end of the season you can't put that square peg in to a round hole. Good luck the rest of the year.

Are they that bad? I mean, I know JCS has little to no talent, but I thought they could have build something off last year despite losing Whitmore, their RB. Seems like they lost all the momentum.

  15. If there is a shortage, then I need to see numbers to prove it. I don't know what the dream is for the state to have on officials and the amount of officials at each game (whether if it's 7 man crew or a 5 man crew). I will say this, there are a lot of older officials who probably won't be in the black and white stripes in 2020, and I believe there will not be enough amount of reinforcement to replace the older officials. At the end of the day, I just want officials to be in good shape, make good calls, not be 'flag-happy' and hustle to get yourself in position to make the call (also dont be lazy if there's a blowout).

Last season, we lost our RB which was going to be the key to the offense for the year and season before we lost our main RB and then our best defensive players all in preseason scrimmages games. So, the coaches decided to not play any scrimmage games this year and hope to be fully healthy to start the season. Health was the plan but it did help to start off with Freedom Prep.

Still got a lot of concerns going through the rest of the season. Hopefully, they can take some things away from Week 1 and keep improving each week. At least get wins over Covington and Westview and make the playoffs would be a plus. But, still got lots of work to do.

If Freedom Prep stays healthy, I think they have a shot of making the playoffs out of their region in 1A. They don't have much depth, probably have about 23 players. After their starters, it look like a big drop off. But they got size on the lines and a couple athletes. The QB was inconsistent but he made some very nice throws at times and he ran the ball well. Plus he is a good size QB, but hopefully he doesn't take too much of a beating the rest of the year. He took a lot of shots Friday and had the ball in his hands a lot.

Thanks for the info! I noticed Freedom Prep's schedule and they will also play Ripley and Lake County later on the season. I want to see those charter schools in Memphis succeed in sports. I've heard of Middle College as well. M.A.S.E out of Memphis played their first game last night in schools history as well, but lost to Fayette Ware.

I want to see McNairy Central make the playoffs, but it looks like the game against South Gibson will be the game. I believe Covington is a 'lock.' Even though the Hornets beat Lexington, I am still not sold on SGC simply because I know Lexington is down. But I'll let nature play it course and see in the future. Goodluck to y'all!!

  17. 15 hours ago, LexVegas said:

And we threw it more than we have ever last year.

If North Side scored their 2 point conversion on their final TD, NS would've won. Chester County did the same exact thing in Henderson, and didn't convert. I believe that game went into OT. Anyhow, Lexington stopped them and that was history.

However, our region, 6-4A, will be down and I mean DOWN!!! I don't think any of us will win 7 games. Hardin County may have the best chance.

  18. 2 hours ago, LexVegas said:

Had we of not fumbled 4 times (2 times going into the endzone inside the 5 yard line), we would have beat Memphis Trezevant in the 4th round at their place.  Take just one of those fumbles going in away and we are playing Greenville for the gold ball.  Everyone would then be singing the praises of the wing T.  A lot of analysis goes into Some of these posts.  In a lot of cases, its as simple as execution.  Our offense  has had its flaws on balance of pass and run, but it has had its successes too.

    BTW, Lexington wins 24-21.

Y'all were also 2 plays from not making the playoffs last year.

I am a SGC guy to the core. Thanks for your fair thoughts. The triple option is nasty if you have the players to run it.... IF and that's a big IF. SGC returns a huge senior class and should give the big red machine a run for there money. I hope SGC pulls this one out but this is why we play the games! Thanks tradertwo

You just said it "the triple option is nasty if you have the players to run it.." Lexington had those players previous years with Johnson as their QB and Tisdale and Hollingsworth as RB's and Gilliam as their WR. Since they lost a QB who was probably the biggest QB (built wise) in WTN, a RB that is tall and was extremely hard to stop in Tisdale. Don't think they have enough this year, but I do think they have enough for Friday.

Lexington's problem in previous years was that the offense was so run heavy, that they still ran the ball being down 2 TD's in the 4th Q, honestly came predictable. Tough to be down by 14 in the 4th if your team is a offense that specializes in running the ball and only running.

  20. If South Gibson can match the physicality that Lexington should bring, then I believe SGC will win. I don't believe Lexington has the weapons that they used to have in the short previous years. However, SGC's running back must have a big game. Honestly, I have no idea where the direction of SGC's program is going, which worries me.

Can't disagree with any of the posts to this point. I love that Fin schedules tuff out of region games to get his teams better. Should be a good game. I think it will be a measuring stick for both teams to see where you are. If neither team as a ton of turnovers it should be a good gauge.

ie Liberty lost to NSHS last year early but I think they turned the ball over 6 times so Liberty was probably the better team but NSHS won the game.

NSHS was the better team that night.
