December 17, 18, 19                        Blue Cross Bowl Games

The way it should be whether Covid 19 or not.  Georgia starts the same time we do and they have TWO (2) open dates and they finish their season 1 week after we do.  Texas finishes their season the week end prior to Christmas.  How will this hurt basketball?  Don't use the statement that football players also play basketball.  Guess Georgia and Texas don't have football players playing basketball!

  2. I was told that the rule for 3 players and a single coach per day was for all sports during the off-season.  When the TNFCA questioned it last year, we were told there would be a proposal for a single coach to be able to meet with 60% of the players on a court, diamond or field at one time.  In basketball you meet 5 days in a week with 3 players each day, you have met with your entire 9th grade or JV or Varsity squad.  In football it takes 4 days just to meet with the starters on either offense or defense.  Understand the rational but not good when you have 9 or more that comprise a starting unit.

No proof just a hunch,  but I bet $100 to a doughnut that rule has been broken by many HS in our state.  And if so, what is their punishment?

  3. Since schools have been closed and all spring sports have been stopped, can off season football instruction continue?    TSSAA allows off-season instruction with a single coach and 3 student-athletes per day to meet and teach football.  Is this opportunity still in effect or has it also been deleted.

I know there was strong discussion of increasing the number of football, soccer, baseball and softball players that could be instructed during off-season and I didn't know if that had passed.

I know TNFCA was asking for 6 football players to be approved by TSSAA.

They need to change to take only the top 2 teams - you are always going to have teams with losing records if you include 4 from each region.

Don't think that is true but it could be.  With regions that have 7-8 teams, the chances of having 4 teams with .500 or above records are far greater than regions with 4-5 teams.

  5. How many public HS in Tennessee?  Let's say 300  If you took 8 regions and 8 schools per region and have 5 classes, that would be 320 schools. Surely you can move 1 school around here and there and NOT HAVE ONLY 4 SCHOOLS IN A REGION.  Guessing that schools with a losing record and in the playoffs, most often come from regions with 5 or fewer schools.

Got a good feeling about this game (not sure why). Henry is talented, well coached and a good ball team... Anything can happen and I believe the boys come out ready to rock and roll.

This slighted edited post came from the Murray Racers fan board regarding the APSU-Murray game Saturday which I will attend, its aspirational on both boards, a little fun. Wishing the purple and gold well against the best program around the area

Best of luck Wildcats tonight.  Will be listening to the streaming of the game.  Also heading to Murray tomorrow with 3 teammates from AP.  One of which had the greatest pass receiving game in the history of college football, 20 receptions from a freshman QB.  His record was a national record that was broken a few years later and was an OVC record for 45 years.

I vote we use the boys basketball classes for football. Top two teams make the playoffs.

Like your thinking.  You said top two teams from each district, right?  You fill your schedule with district teams, then region teams, then others?  Put Henry Co. with teams from Memphis.

I tell you right now a team that worries me a lot is Southwind. Their 3 headed Monster at RB is something special. Just throwing that out there but they can freaking score some points in a hurry.

Thought y'all played Clarksville HS this week.  Better be worried about your next opponent and not some one down the road...you might need tickets to watch a game down the road.

  9. Nothing against the former coach but a 9-1 regular season record is an improvement of the past few years.  IMHO you have hired the right man for the job and he has proven that with results and not talking about just record.  I do not know the answer, but were the schedules the same or close to the same this year as in the past few years?  Pretty sure region schedule is very close to same.  Check opponents W-L record this year vs. past and that is a way to see success.  Not sure but would be willing to say, Gallatin played more playoff teams this year than non-playoff teams.  Should see them in Cookeville soon.  JMO

  10. I like a little bit of both ideas.  Personally, 6 classes is a bit much in D1 and for dang sure 3 classes in D2 is too much.  So lets take the easy road and drop 1 class from each and go with 5 in D1 and 2 in D2.  Not sure about this, but I think there are 300+/- teams in D1, so my simple mind wants to say 300, divided into 5 classes you have 60 schools each in each class and keep 8 regions.  Winner and runner-up from each region qualify which gives you 16 in each class.  Each region would have 7 or 8 teams, no more 4 or 5 team regions Now go back and take the next 16 with the best record to fill out a 32 team bracket as we have it now. You would have to have a tie breaker for teams with same W-L record.  If there are teams not in the playoffs and they are 5-5 or better, go back to the bowl game system and allow them to play 1 more game.

Travel is probably going to be more so lets have a plan to help pay for that expense.  Ga. has a great plan in the GHSA gets 12% off the top, officials get paid off the top, mileage to the travel team one way (think $4.50 or $5) then the two teams split the remainder 50-50.  Well TSSAA wants to get their piece of the pie, so give them 30% of each game off the top, pay the officials next and finally pay the travel $X (don't have a clue unless we copy-cat Ga., which might not be bad).  Then you split the remainder 50-50 with the 2 teams.

    Now TSSAA will say that they fund catastrophic insurance so go back to the 5 classes and start with 1A and charge $200 per school.  Add $200 for each class through 5A, i.e., 2A - $400, 3A - $600, 4A - $800, 5A - $1000.  1A = $12,000 / 2A = $24,000 / 3A = $36,000 / 4A = $48,000 / 5A = $60,000 = $180,000 for catastrophic insurance, surely to goodness our premium would be covered with $180,000!

  11. Not sure I'm correct because I checked this at 5:30am as I was working at our restaurant.  I think  through the 6 classes in D-1, there were 37 teams with a losing record that qualified for the playoffs.  There were 7 teams with a .500 record or better that didn't qualify for the playoffs.

Only solution I see is fewer classes, larger regions, possibly more playoff teams with better records.  How about it?

  12. Yes there was a good crowd for that game, weather included.  When you said film, if you recall we were using the DVD tape method then and to keep people from copying it illegally,  we decided to just keep the tapes.  Some school in the county above us would copy without permission...guess who?

Also, if memory serves me, the Halls-Powell game from 2001was the first game after 9-11.  Do you remember the ultra-light plane that do a fly-over just before the band played the National Anthem?  One of our students and he asked my permission on Thursday if he could do it and I said yes but only if you wave your wings at me.  Coaches couldn't figure out why we left for the field 3 minutes early.  The last play of that game, think Derek Milligan was the QB, we dropped all 11 players into pass coverage - the DL only dropped about 5 yards.

Great rivalries, great games, friends afterwards.  Congrats on Powell's success this year, hope the Devils can finish regular season with a W tonight, 7-3 overall.  GO DEVILS & PANTHERS!

Yeah. I always wondered why you tried a fade in to a 25 mph wind. :-o

That completely changed the game, but if memory serves Powell's defense gave you 60 yards on that drive and not much else the rest of the night.

In fact both defenses were spectacular that night.  Cody Watts and Jay Courtney just made one more play than you guys did that night.

You never throw a fade route too short, back of end zone where only WR can catch it or out of bounds.

Easy to say, hard to do in the elements.  Never like an Ivan since that night.
