I think they have they coach they want close to being done. I guess we will all see how this plays out. I hope the hire a good one. There are some players in the box for the next coach to work with.

I heard they have most of their team coming back. Who is the next coach?  Also, what about Chester County? That one has been open for a while.  Gibson County also???

It was my understanding that he just retired.

south Gibson coach retired. I'm hearing he is going to continue to teach.

I was just saying I haven't heard any news at all on any of those jobs....  With summer coming you would think they want a coach in place.

I coach 3 sports in HS and can tell you that basketball is NOT the most time consuming. I'm not saying it doesn't take a lot of time but between basketball, baseball and football it isn't the most time consuming.

It is the longest season. Plus, 30 games a year. No Christmas break. I would say basketball is the most time consuming.

This is a great question. The retirement seemed a little premature. I do not know the coach personally, but I hope he has found what he is looking for. He is a fine Christian man with a lot of principle and morals about him. I wish him nothing but the best. There are some players in the box for the next coach. This is going to be interesting to see how it plays out.

No movement on Chester? South Gibson? Gibson County?

Why would the tax payers be responsible for paying for only a coach?

In recent years with all the theft from various programs in schools from different programs with booster clubs (not just sports) the State of TN has made alot of rules surrounding booster clubs and how they handle money.

I have two documents to review, 1 is 40 pages from the state comptroller and the other is 37 pages from my district, so I can consider starting a booster club for my middle school program. It has been too much trouble in the past for the other coaches.

There is no way there needs to be an adult in the school building for 7 hours a day with no responsibilities except coaching.

Okay. so how do you fix it? or, do you even fell as if it needs to be fixed?

    Who's going to pay them?

In my opinion coaches need to be in the school to interact with the kids/players. They need to be there to help encourage and intervene when it is necessary. Coaches need to have access to players attendance, grades, and discipline records.

Coaches are a huge influence on players.

I get all that.  And I agree too.  However, if the coach is only there to coach that would give them more time to do those things. The school system and booster clubs combine and pay them.

  7. Congratulations to Coach Runyon. He seemed to do a good job when I watched his teams play. He didn't coach like he was ready to retire. With that being said... both coaching positions in the same district open... which one of these jobs is the best job and why?  also, it is a coincidence that they both leave at the same time...

Tax payer dollars are paid for certified teachers to "teach" and then coach. The primary job is to teach.

There are some district that ay awesome supplements and others that don't. Dyersburg and Dyer County are pretty close if I remember correctly. I would imagine that Football and basketball are above $10,000 now.

I've heard that Milan is $20,000 for boys basketball. I would imagine that football is more than that in Milan.

Collierville has camps that coaches get paid extra for. 3 camps a year, 100 kids a camp, $30,000 right there.

There are places like Memphis-Shelby County schools where the supplements are garbage even for the head coaches. I made less than $3,000 as the head assistant at Germantown in 2015 when we were 26-4 and one of the best teams in the Southeast. As a head middle school coach next year I will make between $4-5,000 at a municipal in Shelby County.

Coaches should be compensated for the jobs that are required but lets keep in mind that they are educators first.

It's pretty frustrating to other teachers that work their tale off teaching 6-7 classes a day to watch someone roam campus, not teach (or have very minimal responsibilities), and get paid the same (more with supplements) as a person who has the some years of experience or sometimes less.

good points. I guess the question is do the coaches need to be out of the classroom and get paid for just coaching. maybe move the coaching jobs to just coaching and no teaching. that would open up the coaching ranks to some good coaches that are not qualified to teach. Then you could do contracts and pay them whatever you want to pay them. move the positions to contracts.  Just like college. Thoughts?

    Justin Lowery from Gibson Co.

Coach Lowery seems to have done a pretty good job at Gibson County. Imma say this is good hire. Not a lot of coaches would want to follow Coach Wilkins...

Making 100,000 a year not a bad gig

Plenty of head high school coaches, especially at larger programs with pedigree, get small class schedules and time to get things done.

I've seen head football and basketball coaches get 2 P.E classes, 2 weightlifting, cafeteria duty, and planning. They might be the study hall teacher, alternative school, or something that doesn't require alot of planning and actual teaching.

I think at Dyer County the coach gets 2 basketball periods, 1 P.E class, and a planning. You can't get much easier than that. The supplements used to be $10,000 for boys and girls each.

It's not like this everywhere. I know that.

I would think These are the exceptions not the norm. AND, should be the norm not the exception.

This is why you see all those jobs on the TSSAA portal. Most HS coaches will be on a one-year deal unless they are at a big winning program where talent is flowing in.

it is nuts. West Tennessee hasn't seen a lot of changes this season but the two that we have right now are a younger guy at Chester County who resigned after some success and a guy that has been around a long time at South Gibson who also had some success. Makes you wonder why they resigned. The South Gibson Coach is retiring from what I am hearing. But the Chester County Coach I'm not sure.

Who in their right mind would coach high school basketball???  I sure am glad people do though because I love it. I feel bad for them.

I was a little surprised when I saw this.

me too. got beat in region quarter finals last year at Haywood, went to sectionals year before and region semifinals the year before that. Won a district championship also. Wonder why he retired?

Yep I agree and basketball is the most time consuming of all sports.  I see schools now hiring coaches to basically just coach and not teach which I think is great.  We have a lot of coaches that really aren’t interested in teaching also.

Or at least let the coach have some time during the day to game plan, scout and practice plan before they have to practice.

Yea, it sounds like it was on his terms which is a good thing. He did a great job with the program in my opinion. It might just be symbolic of the fact that a lot of good young coaches aren't sticking with it like they used to. Coaching is a thankless occupation and all the issues coaches face have only gotten worse over the past few years. Might just be burned out.

who in their right mind would be a high school basketball coach? hahaha. I have said on here before by the time the average coach gets to practice they have taught all day, made sure they have enough money in the account for the bus (lots of other financial responsibilities), had a few phone calls from parents, graded the assignments and entered in the system for parents of students to complain about, maybe had some additional assignments at school like watching an entrance, and this is just the beginning. No way! Oh, i forgot practice planning, scouting, game planning, player development... LOL

Word on the street, John Wilkins is going to Brentwood. Rebels basically losing 2 head coaches in one move. Will they hire separate boys and girls coaches or hire one person for both?  Preston or Drew or a combination or do they go outside the system. Should be an attractive job.

Not sure but also not so sure it is an attractive job... Following Wilkins with all the success he had with a lot less talent... Not so attractive.

I just saw that. I am very surprised. That young coach was doing a good job with them. Was there something going on internally or another issue?

I'm hearing it was his decision and the administration wanted him to continue to coach. I think the press release said he is going to continue teaching at the school. He is the assistant baseball coach right now. the press release also noted he played college baseball so is he flipping to baseball instead of basketball? who knows. But I haven't heard anything at all about internal issues or anything.
