JoeBlow, Haywood's talent does not match up with Covington's...it's superior bottom line. They were bigger, faster, and deeper. They consistently put multiple kids into the SEC/ACC and other FBS teams. Covington cannot say that. As far as Munford goes, Covington made a lot of mistakes that contributed to that 28-7 final including multiple onside kicks and turnovers resulting in short fields for the Cougars and keeping the ball out of Covington's hands. Yes, Munford's D performed very well against Covington, but IMO that game is closer if both teams are mistake free with no turnovers. And remember, both, Haywood and Munford are UNDEFEATED teams in higher classifications...everyone else, Covington has dominated.

I do believe that East Nashville has more athletes than Covington and probably should win that game if it happens. I'm not gonna bet on it though, because I've seen a Covington team go to Nashville and play a PC with much more talent and come out on top and then play them within a point a couple years later. These Nashville teams see a lot of the same thing all year and are sometimes surprised by different offenses late in the playoffs. So I'm not gonna say Covington will be embarrassed whatsoever at this point. These are insider takes btw. You may be right, we shall see.

I am not going to go into why Covington does not send more players to Power 5 schools, we all know why that is, and it really doesn't matter.

Multiple onside kicks.....hmmm... did Haywood not do the same thing on Friday? Do you not think there will be teams in the playoffs that do it as well? Might want to figure that one out. If it happened week 1 and still bit you in the rear in week 9 then it needs addressing...You are speaking directly to my point about the coaching staff not putting the players in the best place to be successful.

Well, if Covington meets East Nashville, I will worry about that game when it happens. You gripe a lot about Covington for somebody who is apparently an outsider. I have followed this team since 1982 when my first child entered high school. Since then I have missed attending maybe 8 or 9 games that Covington has played. That’s home, away, playoffs, or bowl games. I like our current coaching staff and don’t appreciate somebody coming on Coach T and disparaging them.

You may not know that Covington is a 3A school. That means that we have fewer students than 4A Haywood and 5A Munford. That means we have a smaller talent pool. Despite that, Covington had beat Munford 4 years in a row when they managed to transfer in enough outside talent this year to get a win.

Haywood is a great team this year. They embarrassed the 4A teams in their region with blowout wins. They are not so tough every year. Covington beat them in Brownsville two years ago. Right now they have hit an optimum combination of good talent and good coaching to be great. You are searching if you want to criticize our 3A team for losing to them. Show me a team that has beat them this year. We made a respectable showing.

Covington played Alcoa to a standstill the last time we made the title game. They had to score in the last two minutes to beat us by 7 points. How well did East Nashville or Pearl Cohn do vs Alcoa? They got blown out - that’s how.

So, if you continue to run down my team, I don’t care if you never darken the door of our stadium again. Go find another team to critique negatively.

You can like the current coaching staff all that you please, but the fact of the matter is that the previous coach had no problem beating 3A, 4A, 5A schools yearly. Clearly I know that Haywood is a 4A school, and you make my point by bringing up the fact that Covington beat them just 2 short years ago, even with this same staff! Are you telling me that Haywood has assembled a team that is 50 points better than Covington in two short years???? Haywood is a great team, I agree, but there is 0.0% chance that they are 50 points better than Covington over the past two season. Talent wise they match up very similarly. Munford finally has the talent to hang with Covington this year, and what happens, an absolute embarrassment happens. That is not the Covington of old, which you should know since you have been going to games since 1982...

You are also making my case bringing up Alcoa. Was that not under the previous coach? I can assure you that Alcoa would not need a late score to win by 7 over the past few years.

I am not running down your team. I respect Covington and respect the tradition that it has. I have simply stated that they are getting embarrassed by teams that have equal or more talent than them. If you can't see that then I do not know what to tell you. Maybe take the rose colored glasses off and you might see it.

I agree with parts of this. However, the gap between Alcoa and other 3A teams is massive. Covington will walk to the semis this year and having a home game against an East Nashville more than likely could go either way in my opinion. I think silver balls are very attainable with this team.

I hate to break it to you, but east nashville will absolutely embarrass Covington. It will be a rerun of last night and apparently the Munford game as well. East Nashville has the athletes to match up with Covington and thus, will win easily. That game will not be close.

Covington will never be expected to beat Alcoa, that is a fairy tale, but Covington went to back to back state title games not that long ago. That should be their goal every year. They can beat up on their region teams that they play, simply because Ripley, millington, bolivar, and whoever else do not have the horses to beat them, but Haywood and Munford do have those horses and you saw those results. An absolute beatdown by both teams.... Maybe that is the new Covington, I dont know. I simply am on the outside looking in. But It was not that long ago when I would make the drive to Covington and watch them beat really good teams in dominating fashion. I hope they get back to that. I am a fan of good football and Covington used to play a bunch of good football.

  4. Covington can beat teams with far less talent, but they simply cannot beat teams with equal or more talent than them. They run an offense with zero scheme and the coaching staff does very little to put the team in advantageous situations when playing better teams. It seems as if the game plan last night was to run the ball up the middle and then hopefully use that to open up other parts of the offense. A blind man could have seen that Covington was not going to run the ball up the middle consistently on Haywood.

The Covington coaching staff is fine but they are in over their heads when it comes to trying to out scheme a team better than them. They simply cannot do it. It’s been that way since Coach Wheeler left for East Tennessee. I’m not sure Covington has won a game where they were at a talent disadvantage since then.

haywood is a great team, and there is no reason to hang your heard when losing to them, but I expect more out of Covington as an outsider and I’m sure their fans do as well. If 8/9 regular season wins is the goal, then you will get that ever year at Covington. If state championship appearances is the goal, good luck. That’s not happening.

  5. Covington will not line up and run the ball right at Haywood with any success. If that is the game plan, then Covington needs to be prepared for a long night. I suspect that will not be the game plan, but I also do not believe that Covington will be able to throw the ball with much success either. I look for this game to go much like last years contest did. Haywood big. Covington is a good team, but Haywood is better than anyone Covington has seen this year.

You're telling me Munford had the ball for 29 of the first 36 minutes?

Could be more actually. Covington goes 4 and out to start the game. Runs roughly 1.5 minutes of clock. Gets ball back with a fumble recovery. Scores on 3rd or 4th play of drive with long run. Roughly 1 minute of clock.  Munford get ball, 5-6 minute drive results in TD. Onside kick and they recover. Another 6-7 minute drive that ends in TD. Covington 3 and out results in punt. Roughly 2 minutes of clock passes. Munford gets the ball on their own 2, drives it down inside the 10 and half ends without them scoring. That’s your first half and Covington had the ball maybe 5 minutes of total possession time. And I’m being generous with the time amounts.

munford gets ball to start 2nd half and scored on long drive. Covington fumbled the kick so munford gets it again and scores again in a 3-4 minute drive. Covington got the ball back with maybe 4 minutes left in the 3rd down 28-7 and finally got more than 1 first down so maybe they had possession of the ball for 10 of first 36 total minutes played.  It was not a lot at all.

The Covington D couldn’t catch a break last night. The two fumbles on Kickoff return hurt the Chargers more than anything to me.

Agree. Covingtons offense was on the field less than 7 min of game time until the 4th quarter. That is not a good recipe for your defense in week 1.

Everyone loves to talk about the skill players, but shout out to the offensive line of Munford. Those boys went to work last night and loved real impressive pushing around what is always a really good defense from Covington! :thumb:

Agree! Munford OL played awesome early and kept it up after that Covington defense was on the field for 90% of the game.

Even though I was pulling for Covington, I’m glad to see Coach Calhoun develop a successful program at Munford.

Coach Calhoun was the head coach at Haywood from 2011 - 2012.  His record at Haywood was 4 – 16.  In my opinion, the fans and players at Haywood did not give him a fair deal.

It's good to see the fans and players at Munford buying into his program and giving him the opportunity to prove what he can accomplish.  Good luck to Coach Calhoun and the Cougars the rest of the way.

Regroup Chargers!  With the exception of the Haywood game (Go Tomcats!), I hope y'all finish strong and make it to Chattanooga.

I can't speak on Coach Calhoun. Don't know much about him, but I have watched Covington from a distance over the past few years and I have been less than impressed with their coach. If they go into a game where the talent disparity is even, they almost always lose. Kirby loses more evenly matched games than most. The old coach who left a few years back would almost never lose evenly matched games and hardly lost to superior opponents.

Just curious, what type of offense did Covington run?

They ran the old fashioned wing t, tho not very well. Munford did a great job of keeping covingtons offense off the field but even when they were on it they didn’t do much.

I heard rumors that Covington had been running some different offense all off-season and then went back to wing this week. Not sure how true that is, but if that is the case then the coach needs to answer for that.

Covington looked very poorly coached and this is not the first time I have said that over the past few years. Not sure what is going on up there in Tipton Co but Covington has too much talent to be getting embarrassed like they have the past few seasons…

A quick look shows Sonny-Moore has Covington as a 25 point favorite. The Massey predictor shows the Chargers as a 21 point favorite.

Yea I will be shocked if this is a 21 point game. Munford is legit. If I was setting spreads I would have Munford favored based off of the scrimmage season and the "jamboree" each played. I look for munford to shock the Chargers this Thursday.

2019 11-3 Semi Final loss to Pearl Cohn

    (15 total points deciding factor; 14-7, 20-13, 21-20)

    2020 8-2 Covid Forfeit  in 2nd Round

    (8 total points deciding factor; 14-7, 22-21)

    2021 9-3 Quarterfinal loss

(44 total point deciding factor; 29-22 Dyersburg, 33-0 Haywood, 21-20 Dyersburg)

    28-8 (78% winning percentage)

That’s without getting into the 2-0 record Coach Kirby has head up over Coach Wheeler; or facility upgrades that the current coach and staff has personally completed and facilitated since March 2019.

Listen I'm not saying that JR Kirby can't coach. I am saying that they lose games now that they did not lose under Marty Wheeler. How many state championship game appearances does JR Kirby have? I rest my case...

Just curious to a outsider looking in does everybody in the region run the wingt/Option? I’ve seen Covington multiple times and dyersburg for the first time last year.

No they do not. The other teams in this region run different offenses, but some do have the option in their arsenal.

WHAT IN THE WORLD HAS HAPPENED TO COVINGTON? They have now lost 3 in a row after a loss to Raleigh Egypt tonight. They were ranked top 10 in the state preseason and everyone that I talked to thought they would be a typical covington team that would probably go undefeated in the regular season. The wheels have come off over in tipton county it seems

That you from 2016 when Wheeler was the coach? I know Fayette Academy doesn't have much to get excited for, I am happy to sell you a season pass for Covington!

I don't understand? What does this have to do with my post about the recent coach losing games to teams that have equal talent?

  15. Haywood wins this region in run away fashion. Not many teams across the state can match up with Haywood when they are at their peak. These coaches at Haywood are doing an unbelievable job. As for the rest of the region, I expect chaos. A lot of these teams are very similar in strength which I think will lead to a crazy, but very fun season in this region!

  16. In the days of old I would say Covington is for sure the favorite, but recently Covington has struggled against teams that they cannot overwhelm with their athletic ability. Covington is only going to play about 2 teams a year that can match up with them as far as athletes go, and they have been losing those games. Several years ago Covington could beat teams better than them due to the great coaching they had, but that is not the case now. I have heard that most of the coaching staff is the same, but not having Marty Wheeler on the sideless is a huge difference. I know the coach they have now has been around Covington as well as West Tennessee for a while, coaching in different spots, but he seems to lose the "big games" more so than not. Because of this, my prediction for this region goes like this...

    1. Dyersburg

    2. Ripley

    3. Covington

    4. Millington

    5. Bolivar

    6. Bolton

    I am going ,

    Covington 35

    Dyersburg 14

This is the most disrespectful thing I have seen in a while. I hope this does not make its way into Dyersburg's locker room, not that they need any added motivation, but this would certainly provide it. The more I think on this game, the more I see Dyersburg limiting Covington similar to the first meeting. I think Dyersburg wins a close game.

  18. Covington wins this game. They have a history of losing big games in the regular season and then winning them in the playoffs. I don't quite get it, but it happens year after year. Covington wins because they have a bunch of different things that they can throw at a defense. Nobody really knows what offense they will run come Friday, and I think their coaches like it that way. Dyersburg is a good team, but I think Covington has been there and done that year after year.

Does anybody want to bet on Henry County? I got Cougars straight up for whatever yall want

Seems the only mumford fan who knew how to work the internet is now MIA. Glad that the fellow didn't take me up on that bet. I would have hated to take his momma's money that she gave him for milk at school last week. Good win HC.

Covington did lose to Haywood 33-0. In our scrimmage with Haywood we was one score away at the end of having the same score as the Tomcats. As far as Dyersburg goes, I'm pulling for those guys, but let's be real, the only team they have faced that was worth 2 cents was Munford and Covington. Both barely winning. I can't see Dyersburg and Covington beating us "handily"

I am not here to debate scrimmages, but I would be fairly certain that Haywood would beat HC by more than 1 score if they played at this exact moment. I said what I said, and I believe that Covington and Dyersburg both would beat HC.  We will never know, so honestly the debate is pointless. You can have your opinion and I will have mine on those two teams.

What we do agree on is the fact that HC is going to beat Munford and I do think they will beat them rather handily.

  21. 2 hours ago, MidTennFootball said:

Munford got whipped by Covington. HC would be 11-0 if they had their schedule

    2 hours ago, BigRed88 said:

Totally agree with this. That tough non region schedule we played will hopefully payoff here in November.

Let's not get carried away. I think HC is going to win Friday, but that flipping schedules comment is pushing it. I think HC loses to both Covington and Dyersburg rather handily. I think HC is much better than their 5-5 recorded suggested, but Covington and Dyersburg are on different levels.
