  1. Many wanted to knock UC off due to early loss against Mayfield. I see they are starting to realize that UC is a really good TN 2a team. Maybe they are hearing the news in Ky since then. Mayfield played a top ten 4a team and blasted them the same way. They then played a top ten 3a team and blasted them. They have played all 3 on the road. UC should instead be rewarded for scheduling tough. That kind of scheduling is how you improve. That is exactly the formula the Mayfield Cardinals have followed for years. Good luck UC.
  2. I can't figure why y'all aren't getting the numbers we are. We average around 60 players each year. I think our school is smaller though.
  3. They do lift weights, but not mandated. We even have a dead period in July, during which they are locked out of the facility or any school property. Mandated by state. The weight lifting they do is mostly during school hours. They allow the boys to come to facility to work out when they want but, not during the dead period. This allows kids to do other things. I had a real baseball player of a son that, wasn't even going to play baseball his senior year if he couldn't take spring break with his classmates. You have to allow kids to be kids. They only get that experience once. If you can be flexible, numbers should increase. No one wants to have all their free time dedicated forever.
  4. If you guys are going year round that's where you are making a mistake. The team that just looked light years better than #1 in TN 2a doesn't go year round. This allows kids to participate in other things. Practice starts mid July. They play until, most likely the first week in Dec. then they have 1-2 weeks the first part of spring and then nothing until July. That way the boys can play basketball, baseball or whatever. Our numbers are down also this year. I think we have right around 53 kids. Normally right at 60.
  5. Ambassador, thanks for further helping my belief. That 2009 Trousdale team you mentioned. Look on their schedule and see who they were beaten by. That was a year that we didn't even win state. Plus, there has been several years where Milan played for a state title after getting pushed around by the Cards in their scrimmages. The statement about the the bend but not break defense working in playoffs shows you haven't been reading. I noted 3 instances in state championships since 2010 in which it did just that. One of those games the Cards were out gained even and still won. That's at the highest level of the playoffs.
  6. I guess my explanations are getting lost on you TN folk. I will break it down for you a bit. The reason UC looked night and day different was due to the talent on the other side. I tried explaining this earlier. Our goal isn't necessarily to stop an offense cold turkey. If we do, that's nice but, we will bend. The idea is that we make the team work down the field over a long series. If it takes 10-12 plays for a high school team to complete a drive, the chances are very high that along the way they will commit a costly penalty or turnover. We have the speed and all other aspects to allow us to do just that. In most games, the other team will have more penalty yardage and turnovers. This is a staple of Catdinal football. The way you can tell if a team is good after playing us, in most instances, is if they were close in yardage. That may not ever equate to points though. UC is good. I just think TN small school football needs to catch up as a whole.
  7. To rebut your statement about getting smoked costing UC the #1 spot, I say this. Tell me which one of those teams on the list wouldn't have gotten the same thing from Mayfield.
  8. Union City loses 1 game and drops to #4? They will be back to #1.
  9. I for one will be hoping you guys take state. As far as the sportsmanship, thank you. It is true. There are two things I remember distinctly to do with my own son's leadership and sportsmanship from his time wearing a red helmet. First was in 2014 state championship. He went toe to toe and didn't take anything from the Williamsburg boys. I know he talked his share of crap, in particular to one of their recievers. After the game he shook that boys hand, patted him on the helmet and told him how good he was. He has been friends communicating over social media since. Last was immediately after the CAL game. He was upset and crying, he hates to lose. He had a fellow teammate come to him, hug him and appologize for the loss. My boy told him right there, get in the weight room Monday and get to work. Then get out there next year and kick their a**es. This is what Mayfield teaches. They don't just teach football, they teach life lessons.
  10. This isn't the first time we have heard this about turnovers and penalties. This is a very regular thing for us. 2010 state championship, we played Hazard. They were 14-0 coming in as were we. They moved the ball well in the first half and appeared they could play with us. They committed I think 5 fumbles and a couple ints. We routed them 47-6 with their only score coming on our jv. 2012, we welcomed in a power run Fairview team that was 14-0. They moved the ball well but, committed 5 fumbles and 1 int. We drilled them 55-8. In 2014, we played an unbeaten Williamsburg team that out gained us. I think they limited their turnovers more but, we still beat them 28-27 in OT. Here is what you and all those fans can't figure out. You can operate a defense like we do and win. We may allow teams to move the ball. The difference is that we make them string a long drive with no huge plays together every time. If a high school team has to work for first down after first down after first down, they will most likely make a mistake or two along the way. Plus, if they don't, we don't need long to score. I have literally witnessed us several times do 80 yard drives in less than a minute.
  11. Purple he was referring to some scrimmages. Yes we did beat Milan some of their state championship and runner up years. But, it was a scrimmage. That really doesn't fully equate. I don't think he meant that as a slap. It is just very obvious that TN small school is light years behind Ky small school at this point. You guys have got to learn that the forward pass has been invented. No longer does 3 yards and a cloud of dust work. I watched this in elementary school game championship once. The losing team literally held the ball all but 3 plays the entire game. The losing coach, who lost 12-6, told the winning coach they only had the ball three plays. The winning coach replied, I only needed it for 2.
  12. I already put in for the vacation time for that weekend. I hope you guys win another one this year as well. I'm not being too rough 1980. I just thought it was crazy for whoever came in and replied that they got killed by a team that won't even make it past semi finals. I promise you, we are going to win #13 this year.
  13. That man done lost his mind. This Cardinal team wins #13 this year. I wouldn't right the rest of the year off for UC. The truth is, TN small school football is really that far behind Ky small school football. I said it before the game.
  14. I also want to say that I really enjoyed the sparring Swo. I hope y'all win state. I promise if you get there, I will be rooting for you as I have in the past.
  15. I remember a few things from this thread. 1). There is no team in Ky 2a that could beat UC by three touchdowns. (Wrong) 2). How many of those wins in our all time record were against Coach Bowling? ( now 1) 3). I must be on something to suggest that we would win by three scores???? 4). I also remember early in this thread TN folk referring to our schedule over the past few years as weak. Really? 5). Good luck the rest of the year, now go win state.
  16. Did someone say that Mayfield isn't 3 scores better than UC?
  17. 4 hours and 15 minutes. I can't wait. People better be good in Graves Co. I want to be able to at least listen to the game.
  18. 14 passes in a complete season. 6 for touchdowns. That is the definition of one deminsional. I cannot recall the last time a one deminsional team beat the Cards.
  19. I guess you got a point there. UC may prevent the running clock by stalling on their 3 play possessions. I guess they could shorten the game by 1,5 to 2 minutes per drive once we get 2-3 touchdowns ahead. That might be enough to prevent the running clock.
  20. Only about 10 hours until that new scoreboard gets lit up. Well, on the visitors side any way.
  21. Good deal. It's only 35 points. I will let the guys know that we will be home early.
