  1. I've been traveling a lot for work and haven't been able to post much.

I have talked to several people about the current travel volleyball environment in middle Tennessee and they are under the same impression as most of us:  TPV will be the "go to club" within in two years, maybe next year.  Parents are not happy with how things are going and have already reached out to TPV about next year.  This years migration of players along with the head to head results have caught the attention of several parents across all age groups who were not open to changing in the past.  Will certainly be interesting to see what happens

I do not think TPV 16's should be losing to a 15-2 team with all the talent they have on that team.  That is surprising to me.  I can understand the Munciana loss I guess.  Not saying it's a bad loss, but def surprising.   Am I wrong?

Both bad losses.  There were a couple players who were off their game during the weekend for sure, especially the loss to Kiva.  They beat the same Kiva team fairly easily in the last game,

  3. Looks like it was a tough weekend for Alliance in Indy this past weekend.  13's had the best finish with a 9th.  16's had the worst finish with a 24th place finish with all the rest finishing in the teens.

Alliance and TPV 15's & 16's will be in Muncianna this weekend in the same tournament so there's a small chance we see these two clubs play again very soon.

Actually, we were both wrong. Alliance teams played TPV teams 6 times Saturday and 5 times Sunday. Saturday they went 0-6, Sunday they bounced back and went 3-2 head to head. Results are below taken from AES, exciting to finally see the two clubs play after the last year and a half of talk and back and forth. The game in middle TN is better for it.

    Saturday

    13 Airborne lost to TPV-13 Yankee 25-11, 25-21

    14 Molten lost to TPV-14 Yankee 25-12, 25-17

    14 Premier lost to TPV-14 Foxtrot 25-21, 25-20

    15 Airborne lost to TPV-15 Alpha 25-7, 25-9

    15 Premier lost to TPV-15 Liberty 25-12, 25-14

    16 Molten lost to TPV-16 Liberty 21-25, 25-21, 15-9

    Sunday

    13 REN won vs TPV 13-Zulu 25-11, 25-18

    13 Molten won vs TPV 13-Yankee 25-22, 15-25, 17-15

    14 Molten lost to TPV 14-Zulu 25-12, 25-19

    16 REN lost to TPV 16-Alpha 25-16, 25-18

    16 REN won vs TPV 16-Liberty 25-22, 23-25, 15-10

I'm very curious how Alliance families are feeling about their club after this weekend.  From the results its obvious TPV has closed talent gap.  When Alliance parents walked into "AGame" they had to feel like they've been screwed the past couple season in regards to how "AGame" was maintained.  "AGame" has not looked that good in 10+ years.

Coaches, talent, facilities.......TPV seems to be doing it right.

Caught a little of the 16's on Saturday... I think the Blackman kid is a big a get for that 16 Alpha team as any of the Alliance kids. That group has a chance to be nationally competitive.

I think TPV has done a disservice to the 18's kids, though. The Paragon team is a complete team, all the pieces are there. The Bravo team has some injury issues, I realize... but I'm not sure when they get to full strength that they can be much better than they are. First contact issues (service receive and floor defense) over the course of the season might keep them from being as competitive as the second team. I know TPV likes to move kids around, so maybe they will make some adjustments.

The TPV 16 Alpha absolutely has a chance to win some national tournaments.  The errors they had this weekend are errors most teams are trying to clean up in March.  It'll be fun to see how far the girls go.  The middle from siegel will be very good, she has very little experience and seems to get better every week.  There are two middles and one setter, besides those three girls, the coach can move any girl to any position.  Both sides of the pins have excellent hitters, they can attack from any point on the court.

TT - would you report on this thread about the TPV 16's team and 18's teams from their play at the upcoming training with Munciana - is that this coming weekend or the following weekend?

I didn't get to see much of the 18's due to the schedule.  The 16's took it to KiVA Red in the first match. KiVA's first 7 shots where cleanly blocked, several more blocks after that......completely changed how KiVA played.  Muciana 16's were next and they are good.  They beat TPV but it wasn't by much.  TPV was exchanging blows but Munciana was a better team.  Last game was against Far Out from Grand Rapids and TPV handled them like they did KiVA.

The Saturday training was ran by the Munciana coach and I've never seen training like it.  90 minutes of up tempo, hard practice, sit for 90 minutes, then do it again and again.  Was supposed to replicate tournament play where you play then sit then play.

I believe 6 are from Alliance, here is what I have heard for the 16-1.

OH, MB, RS, Setter, Libero, DS - Alliance (6)

    OH -  Mid TN (1)

    OH/DS - K2 (1)

MB - Not sure what club last year, Siegel (1)

Havent heard about a possible 10th player.

    Thanks for the clarification.

Big training session this weekend in Munciana this weekend for TPV 16's and 18's.  Sunday they scrimmage Munciana's 1 and 2 teams, Munciana out of Indy, KiVA Red, and Far Out.

AES has value but Prep Volleyball tends to be accurate when seeding teams in top-level tournaments

Consistent GOLD medal bracket participation tends to sort out the top 25 or so teams over time.

In 3 and 4 day tournaments, a team can lose several matches yet win the "right" matches at the "right" time, finish with a near .500 tournament record and still win a key match to back-in to the GOLD bracket

For the upcoming Club season and with middle TN player movement in mind, the following is simply one person's wild guess about what will happen when "local" and "state-wide" teams tangle

13's - Mid TN, K2 and Alliance will all field very good teams

14's - K2 has a good team at this age group.  TPV and Alliance will offer competitive groups as well (I think TPV 13's beat an Alliance 13's team last year)

15's - Memphis VBA may be the best; K2 and Alliance are good

16's - K2 is tops; then TPV (holding an offensive edge over Alliance), then Alliance (with a "ball control" advantage over TPV)

    17's - Alliance hands down

    18's - Alliance, then TPV

Any differing opinions will be appreciated - thanks

13's - Nobody in the state can touch Alliance's 13's.  This team has won several regional tournaments the past couple years and finished 3rd twice last year in large National tournaments.  They even won Bluegrass as 11's

14's K2, no competition.  TPV just does not have hitters at this age

15's - Agree with Memphis VBA with K2 a very close 2nd.  Be interesting to see how Alliance does this year.  Their top player moved to TPV and plays on the TPV 16's

16's - TPV will give K2 a serious run here.  I disagree with Alliance having a ball control advantage over TPV.  Alliance lost to TPV their best hitter, defensive player (Both these girls will play in college power conferences), both setters from their 1 team last year are no longer in the program (the 6'4 setter went to TPV and their 2nd setter decided not to play this year).

    17's - Alliance

    18's - Alliance

and then takes a jab a Maryville.  Seems like someone else from Franklin liked to jab at Maryville a few years back. I think it was Todd.

Now that you proved your a stalker who lives on CoachT (11,000+ posts, geez), whats the point you're trying to make about volleyball?  You have an issue with female sports?  I don't see the correlation.  Please explain

Maryville will compete for championships under Derek Hunt. Oakland drilled Maryville in the Semifinals 2 years ago. A month after that George Quarles resigns and goes to Furman to coach.  Maryville won the championship in Dereks 1st year. Everyone thought Maryville was dead and gone after George left.  What people fail to realize is George had a lot of help.

Another thing is 10 years ago staff was George Quarles,David Ellis,Jim Gaylor,Joe Pinkerton,Wayne Thompson, Mike White,Joe Robinette and Larry Walker.  That was a great staff.  Right now only 2 members off that staff is still coaching. Joe Robinette and Mike White. A lot of those guys either retired or took administration duties. Maryville replaced those coaches with darn good coaches. Coaching staff is still great. Maryville administration will do what it takes to have great coaches.

And the Maryville administration will do what it takes to have the best player$........that Alcoa doesn't get.

I do not see anyway that Oakland can beat Maryville.  As much as I would like for Rutherford County to be represented in the title game, Maryville will win this by 2 touchdowns.   Oakland is one dimensional on offense, but very stout on defense.  Can’t see how they will be able to run the ball consistently against Maryville.  Either way kudos to the Patriots for making to the semis for the last four years.

This post didnt age very well

Teeter Tot and Osage, I agree with what you said in general about A5 and the Atlanta area.

Regarding national competitiveness, what measures would be most fair to use?

    1) finish within the top 100 in the final season AES rankings?

    2) AAU/USAV national tournament finishes? or

    3) other measurements?

Historically, A5 has 2 or more teams at several age groups that end a season AES ranked within the top 100 nationally.

Often, K2 and Alliance will have one team in 2 or more age groups that break into the top 100.

One contributor felt TPV might now have enough talent at the 14's, 16's and/or 18's to have a top team in TN.  Maybe, maybe not just yet.

TPV may not have a team that can finish in the top 100 in the end of season AES national rankings yet.

Maybe this is a different thread altogether?

To me, being in the gold medal brackets on Sundays and some top 5, maybe top 10 finishes in National tournaments is the "National" goal.

TPV is still behind in every age group except for the 16's.  The influx of new players at that age group has elevated that team beyond anything TPV had last year.  This years TPV 16 is the first TPV team that could beat their counterparts at Alliance.

Friends in Atlanta tell me A5 is is going to have a transition year. One of their top coaches, she'd coached their 14-1 teams forever,  left to form her own club. A5 probably won't be what it once was, but will still be plenty good.

Interesting to keep an eye on.  New clubs popping up everywhere.  Atlanta has enough talent to allow two big times clubs compete at the national level.  I'm not sure Nashville does.

True - TPV should have good 18's and 16's teams this coming season.

Hopefully, each team will earn a solid reputation through opportunities against:

A5 (main & South campus teams)

    Circle City (Purple)

    K2

    KIVA (Red & White)

    Milwaukee Sting

    Munciana

    and other MEPL teams.

Last year's Alliance 17/18's and 15's teams likely did not own a .500 or better record against the group named above so TPV will have to earn the lofty praise.

    Time for big girl volleyball

There is no doubt that this will require Alliance to step up their game.  As usual there will be players that come back and others that will leave.   I hope both clubs are successful, it only helps the sport out.  I think Alliance has done a really good job overall.  It will be interesting to see how TPV handles the expense of A-game.  Maybe the finances are way different now because of the sale, but the overhead of the building is just brutal.  I would be interested in knowing why the 16's kids left?  Did they not like their coach?  Unhappy with alliance? Facility?  I know a few of them are playing free...is that the main reason?

I don't think a blanket statement can be made about why theses young ladies decided to move.  I would say they all have their own reasons.

The Brentwood right side has power conference offers? As a hitter?

No.  I didn't say offers.  I said "have power conference schools looking at them."  I've been told she's received letters from Big 10 and ACC schools.  Far from offers but worth noting.

It was going to be a larger exodus anyway after seeing so many high profile girls leave.  I think that caught many people by surprise.

TPV gained the best 16 y/o hitter and defensive player in the state (possibly in the south).  The tallest 16 y/o setter who is getting big time college looks.  The best 15 y/o outside hitter in the state (possibly the best right side in the south) who i heard could be playing on that 16 y/o team too.  That's four players who moved that have power conference schools looking at them.

  18. 5 hours ago, Osage said:

Congrats to TPV, who added some important older kids. They have enough pieces in place now to win at the Open level, and maybe even field the best 16s and 18s teams in the state.  Practice started this week, which also means these teams should be ahead of the rest in those early January / February events.

If TPV backs up what they told those girls (different way of training, a tougher TPV schedule), there will be an even larger exodus to TPV next year.  It's up to Dan and his team to deliver because the spotlight just got brighter.
