  1. Going to be interesting watching Chase Smalling (Science Hill, 126?), Mason Jakob (DB, 113?), and Titus Norman (DB, 120?, 126?) all wrestle.  All freshman and all capable of supplying some exciting matchups with most anyone in the state regardless of age.

Throw in sophomore Carson Dupill from Greeneville (120?,126?) and the potential local dual matchups in region 1 from 113 to 126 just got real interesting.  Hopefully we get those matchups in the regular season even if one or the other has to go up or down to make it happen (purely selfish wishing).

Side note, I saw that Cleveland and Bradley Central matched up last week with the bulk of their starting lineups, good on them for taking those hard "opportunities" because most will not.

  2. I was confusing Kendall with another kid.  That is a tough match for Colton.  Colton actually lost to Kendall last year as a freshman but Colton is physically much different now, much different.  Should be a fun one.

I'm betting on Pigeon Forge or the returning champs Signal Mountain.  PF should, on paper, be loaded.  Greeneville's big three in the middle didn't even get to wrestle at state duals last year and I could see the same thing happening again.  Kodiak has moved on to college so they lose an absolute automatic (and everyone at 170 can quit getting man-handled and breathe a sigh of relief). Greeneville will need to get it done this year as Hunter and Colin graduate and they are equally if not more irreplaceable.  Be interesting after this year to see how Greeneville fairs minus Kodiak, Hunter, and Colin.   Leaves Carson as the last wrestler to grace the national ranks.

It's too bad Halls, Gibbs, Crockett, and Greeneville all come out of region 1.  Greeneville is the obvious favorite.  Going to be a tough region though,

Lol at you and me Oceansize. Your reply got me by a few seconds.

What weight is the younger Ferrell kid at?

I think Whaley will start at 170 and work down as the season progresses.  He probably gave Logan Heckert his toughest match of the tournament last year.

I watched the Greeneville kid wrestle at 195 in the preseason tournament at Bearden last weekend.  He may make some noise in 195 this year.

Alcoa has a really good looking freshman at 195 too. He could make some noise in another year or two.

The Stone Memorial 195 is solid too.

So far 195 is looking to be pretty deep in small school.

As far as I know nothing is set in stone at Crockett.  Colton can move up and down a weight class and so can Gabe.   They are fortunate to have the power to go up and the ability to lean down some.   Colton is a true sophomore but has come into his man body, good athlete now to.  I think he beats White and Kendall, who are currently ranked ahead of him, fairly easily.

And I shouldn't forget Colton's fraternal twin brother Jake Ferrell at 132 or 138.  Jake beat DeLuca from Gibbs this preseason and was dominant outside the first 45 seconds.

Briar looked good in preseason.  If he does go to 160 he is going to be a big kid there.  I was hoping to see Colton and Briar at that preseason tournament but didn't materialize.  Colton had zero practice as football had just ended so probably for the better.

Max Norman and Briar wrestled, man Max is just an animal.  Briar is a big strong kid and he could only survive in the end.  Hunley looks good, matured a bunch.

Was it Lowery from Greeneville at 195?

Maybe swap Gabe Ferrell and Hubbs. Gabe beat Hubbs twice last year.  First time by decision and second by pin.  Only reason Hubbs finished second at states is because Gabe was on the same side of the draw with Atwood.  He lost by decision in OT to Atwood which was far better than Hubbs did.

Whaley is supposedly staying at 160 this year.

Colton Ferrell will be a fun one to watch.

Totally my mistake.  I mistook Fowler's win over Sturgill as Fowler over Norman.

    Its been fixed.

You the man Hamm.  Sincerely... the kids love looking at this stuff. For many it makes their day/week/month to make the cut.

It will all work it’s self out over the course of the season.  Will Logan and Max be at any tournaments or duals where they will have the opportunity to scrap

Maybe.   Max was a state champ at 145 last year, Fargo AA, multiple wins overly nationally ranked opponents at the elite 8 duals, national duals AA in Greco and freestyle, just won the King Open as a true sophomore, was ranked 16th on Flo in the month of September at 152, and is generally on an absolute tear.  Love Hamm and I know he can't watch all the kids on the far side of the state but Max has got to be number one until shown otherwise.  Seems like an easy one but I know stuff happens.

Great job with these rankings! Any chance we get to see Colin Dupill v. "Mad" Max or Logan Hecker v. Omaury Alvarez this year? Better question, are there any tournaments that these teams will see each other at this year? I would drive anywhere in the state to see either of those matches.

Considering Max and Colin are 45 minutes apart from each other I hope so.  There could a dual with the other easy opportunities being the Brawl in the Hall in Bristol or the Indian Classic at DB.    A third possibility is the Ed Cressel.  Although Greeneville didn't attend the Indian or Cressel last year, probably went somewhere else.

  8. Wrestling was the best choice my son ever made.  He was never great, just a good team wrestler who was lucky to have great training partners and a few good coaches, but what it taught him is forever burned into his character and it was all good.  I miss watching him horribly.  Wrestling benefits everything.

  9. How tough (I'm only referencing the boys)?

We had four wrestlers who had a win over a seed.  Nobody beat two seeds.

We had one wrestler reach the quarter finals.

We had one wrestler win six matches.  Two others won five.  Six others won four.  We had a total of 36 wrestlers for TN.

We only had a total of five wrestlers on the second day.

Only one wrestler won a match on the second day.

We had two really high level guys not present in Hunter and Colin Dupill and that would have helped our stats I think.  This tournament never disappoints.  It really is the best of the best in the style that matters most for college.

  10. Cooper Hilton loses a tough match in the quarters to the 11 seed out of Florida.  He now gets the six seed Jayden Rainey in the consolation.  Cooper lost to Jordyn Rainey, his brother, at Fargo.  A chance to repay the favor I hope.

Bryson lost to the eighth seed out of California.

Mason Jakob lost to the 16 seed  in his first match of the day.  Really good tournament for a freshman as he went 6-2 overall.

Leaves Brenot and Todd to wrestle.

  11. Moving on to Day 2 for 138 and above:

    Aiden Brenot Consi-of-8

    Noah Todd Consi-of-8

  12. Incredibly tough tournament and it is great to see all the TN kids wrestling.

The following are those still in the tournament from 132 and below:

  13. Any of the former Tennessee high school wrestlers (other than Palmer and Sell) have a chance of breaking into the line up?

    Dayne Dalrymple  (141) Christian Brothers

    Grant Lundy (149) Cleveland

    Jackson Hearst  (157) Dobyns Bennett

    Landon Lewis (174)  Soddy Daisy

  14. Interestingly enough Flo only picked one Tennessee wrestler to medal and no it isn't Hilton.  Flo picked Max to finish eighth.  13 top 20 at 120, 11 top 20 at 152.

    Flo's list of Tennessee wrestlers:

    Name Weight Rank
    Cooper Hilton 120 12

    briar whaley 160

    Ian McGehee 160
    Jacob Barlow 160
    Aidan Brenot 170

    Kendrick Curtis 195
    Rob Atwood 195
    Noah Todd 220
    Garrett Crowder 220
    Jackson Witsell 285

  15. Tough one.  Super 32 is a different animal compared to Fargo because it is folk style so those top guys that maybe aren't great in freestyle show no such weakness in this tournament.   Fargo allows more surprise medalists IMO.

Hilton is the easy one but even he is no guarantee.

Norman is dark horse for sure.

Mason Jakob taking the step up to the HS ranks so I'm not sure how he will do as a freshman.

As far as who should have been seeded and wasn't, none that I can see.

  16. Upvote for a great pre-season team tournament.  Made the trip over last year from east Tennessee, was fun, and there are matchups for all wresting abilities which is rare.  Great opportunity for the non-experienced to get some reps against their equals instead of simply getting beat up.
