But it doesn't need to be year around. I've always encouraged student athletes to play multiple sports. Ultimately, familes need to do what they believe is best for them but travel teams and 7v7 camps aren't required / necessary to play college. I've coached HS basketball in a lot of places (Puerto Rico, WA, HI, NC, AK and TN) and have had plenty of student athletes that continued playing a sport in college. The overwhelming majority of those were multi-sport guys and many didn't do their main sport 24/7/365.

"Elite Camps" aren't necessary either. I think they have their place (campus visit) and can be fun/exciting while providing an opportunity to compete with other talented players. HOWEVER, more often then not they're money grabs that stroke players and parents egos. Big schools know who they're recruiting and rarely do they find a hidden gem at an "elite camp"

    Exactly!!!! Great post

  2. I saw south side, Dyersburg, JCS, Lexington, USJ, and south gibson

JCS was impressive.  Best team out of this group

south side played a ton of kids and weeding through all those kids was tough but second beat out of this group

Dyersburg looked a lot different but have a kid that can shoot and a true post. Third best out of this group

South gibson was very small, they were really long last year. They play hard, guard you but can’t score 4th best out of this group

Lexington looked like a typical summer team after graduating a lot. They will figure it out 5th out of this group

USJ will get better and better.

  3. Multi sport athletes are awesome. However, every sport is year around now. Travel baseball, AAU basketball, 7v7 football and camps every weekend. I’m not against it but when does the kid get to be a kid

Also, kids are growing and their body never gets to just recover.

add in weekend “elite” camps that parents are setting up and it is extremely tough on the kids to enjoy high school sports and just be a kid.

With all due respect West TN and East TN aren't purged by the presence of private schools nearly as much as schools in Middle TN

I think it is just as bad in Jackson

just a smaller scale because it is a smaller city.

open enrollment for middle schoolers to play anywhere they want and mix in the private schools (USJ TCA JCS sacred heart) and you would think the middle school games are an AAU event during the recruiting window in Jackson.

No I watched my nephew play. Union City vs Crockett. Just saw the SGC score and thought it was impressive they doubled up Peabody even though they don’t have the football kids.
yes dexter’s son is really good. He’s going to build a contender in D2-A soon

How did Crockett and union city look?

Their district is one of the weakest in the state and AA has been the worst class in the state for years. Just because you win games doesn't mean you're good. The schedule is weak and the film says it all. The SS vs NS film is nothing but a bunch of eurostep layups with no help defense by either team.

They pressure bad teams into turnovers and get easy baskets because they're more athletic and usually bigger. That's 6th grade rec league ball at its best. That's not basketball.

Wow. I’m an old sports guy and your comments just don’t make sense to me. Been following sports here for a long time and South Side Basketball has been and still is one of the top programs in the state. They have tons of kids playing at the next level and every year their kids graduate and go play college ball. I’ve watched a lot of their games. Kids are respectful, well coached, play hard and have been very skilled. Their talent has been going down for several years and they still okay for a championship.  There are several kids that graduated from their district playing college basketball this year. A couple from North Side, South Side and at least 1 from South Gibson. So… what are you talking about? Wow, I’m just an old sports guy and your comments just don’t make any sense.

I watched SS several times last year and they started 5 seniors. North Side will be better than them but they graduated their top guys too. South Gibson will also be better than SS and honestly, they may win that District. Liberty will be a little better but probably still bottom of that district.

I don’t know about all that… south side being down is not like other schools being down. They are still the team to beat until somebody bears them. They have won 5 or 6 district championships in a row

Our district could add three teams and lose one.  It could look like this next year for us:

    Adamsville

    Scotts Hill

    Riverside

    Madison

    McNairy

    JCM

    Liberty

The northern district could be: Gibson Co., Westview, Dyersburg, Milan, Huntingdon, Union City, Trenton.

Should be interesting when the numbers come out.

No way this will happen. Keeping it the same means the cut off  numbers for the classes will change in order to keep the same number of teams in each class.  Around 80-85 in each class

That lost left a sour taste in Haywood mouth. Haywood will be hungry this year. We have a deep bench and size. Also when our football players get done with football. We will be even be more dangerous.

Y’all gotta a chance for a gold ball!

Crockett and Haywood are in the same region. Crockett gave the tomcats the boot last year in the semis. Are you predicting that those are the two playing for the region crown? If so, does Haywood get pay back or does Crockett show that they belong?

Haywood will definitely win that region

  11. Summer camps really don’t matter!… but… 1. Haywood County may win 3A state championship. Coach’s son is legit. Gets really high in mid range and he has tons of help and tons of size around him

    2. South Side is a complete rebuild. They will struggle in post season for the first time in a long time. Really young and I didn’t see one familiar face from last year

    3. TCA will compete this year. They have a freshman that is gonna be hard to handle. Coach’s son is a player

    4. Crockett County may win their region. They are strong and play really hard. Guard okay May hold them back but we will see

    5. South Gibson may win District and region. They are long and can shoot really good. Got a really tall kid at the point that looked good. They will be better than last year
