  1. No need to check sources. Mr Durden claims McCallie had the best coaching staff. You guys got 6th place at state this year. Haven’t won a state title since 2006?

Getting beat by Baylor is understandable, as they recruit their entire line up. But every other school ahead of you guys operate on the sane playing field.

So, if you want to beat them, you would need to bring in a bunch of recruits. Which you guys are. Pretty sure there is about 5-6 of the best 8th graders in the state attending McCallie next year, none of which were McCallie Students prior.

And let’s be real, if you were not there, they wouldn’t have most of the kids on the team.

I absolutely love Yost and have since we went to school together, but he should have stayed with Cleveland as moving over to McCallie was a really bad decision when it comes down to winning actual state titles and your kids doing so also. As far as costs durdon,  it shows McCallie is 64k for domestic boarding students and 33 for day students, Baylor is 58 for domestic boarding and 29 for day. So when talking about that large amount of money they really are very close and really I see no reason in paying the extra bit to go to McCallie vs Baylor, both very highly thought of schools, their academic rankings are very close and heck at least Baylor has ladies going there and not having to take classes with GPS girls just to see a female. VP of my company talked to me a few years ago, his dad went to McCallie, he went to McCallie and his oldest went to McCallie, the youngest he pulled out and sent to Baylor because he hated what McCallie was becoming(his son was a D1 athlete and went to college on a full ride). Said he would never send another kid to McCallie or even think of helping a grandkid go either. This coming from a guy that didnt get a cent of financial aid to either school but was a long line of McCallie men. Said many kids that should have gotten financial aid and qualified but didnt get any because it wasnt what the school thought they should put their money towards. Pretty sad for a school with 136 million in endowment. But hey, at least they sold their soul for some football lol.

Have you seen how much Cleveland and Knox travel in the off season….. no way Yost would have lasted. He’s probably in the best situation for him. Just needs to work harder recruiting.

The problems with the McCallie wrestling team appear to be with the administration not being willing to provide wrestlers with 100% of the financial aid that they qualified for.  If tuition is 30K and a family qualifies for 50% that would be 15K.  However, if the school only provides wrestling families with 50% that would be 7500.00 so the total bill for the family would be $22,500.00 instead of $15,000.00. That extra $7500.00 might as well be 75 million to most families as they would struggle to pay the 15k.  Not defending McCallie but I have had wrestling families from McCallie that were paying 100% of the tuition tell me that the administration at McCallie wanted to focus on LAX, Soccer, Swimming and Track & Field athletes because the athletes in those sports typically don’t need as much financial aid. What everyone must understand is that a school only has X number of dollars that they can allocate to financial aid.  I have also been told that the administration at MBA does not provide financial aid to athletes that just wrestle.  The good wrestlers at MBA are paying the full tuition or they also participate in football.  To me the sad thing is that several of the D2 schools are doing absolutely nothing to develop the talent that is already in the school.  When a successful team does not even have a middle school team and just goes out and recruits kids to fill certain weight classifications something is wrong.  What ever happened to the philosophy that you work to help your own before you seek help from the outside?

MBA, FR and CB do a great job developing their own talent. That’s obvious bc they all have feeder programs represented in the youth state tournament. Bottom line is Baylor and McCallie would rather recruit kids to build a team, which is fine. But they aren’t better coaches than any of the other 3 programs. Past credentials are 100% irrelevant when it comes to ability to coach.

I never once mentioned scholarships,  I said specifically financial aid.

After my sons Freshman year, we had over 10 high level wrestlers apply at McCallie the next 3 years that would have qualified for a very high percentage if not 100% of financial aid based off their families income level but McCallie didnt grant them any aid at all because that money was tied up in football.  Just because you qualify doesn’t mean you are getting it or the entire amount you qualify for.  It completely up to the schools if they want to give out aid and how much they give out based of the financial aid calculator.

And, yes you are correct, the financial aid system does penalize middle class families as once the family income gets above 150k then you only qualify for a tiny bit of aid and for those families the tuition at McCallie, Baylor, and MBA is just to much to swing.

As for the cross country team, the McCallie wrestling team was really good in 18 and 19.  My sons freshman year in 18, McCallie would have won beaten Christian Brothers in both  traditional and dual state if River Henry had not gotten hurt.  His sophomore year, they lost to Baylor on the last match to lose dual state.  I would aLao argue that you are more likely get full pay kids in cross country than you are in wrestling.

My point on all of this is that  the amount of financial a sports program gets at McCallie, Baylor, MBA is single determining factor of success of those sports teams.

As for as judging the overall ability of a coaching staff, for me and my son we looked at different coaching staffs and our determining factor was which staff would prepare him best for D1 which is why we eventually decided on McCallie.  Yost has produced the most D1 wrestlers of any active coach in TN and Pitts has developed probably the 2nd most.

This past season 3 programs had 4 wrestlers that wrestled D1,  Christian Brothers, Baylor and McCallie.  As far as starting varisty matches this past season Baylor had 1 of their 4 that did, Christian Brothers had 2 and McCallie had 3.   So I will say it again, McCallie has the best coaching staff in the state.

2018- Maybe could have beat CB but would have still lost to Baylor

2019- No Bates or Horst and they still win at Duals

    and best coaching staff….. stop

McCallie is one of the most expensive high school in the US. If you board it’s over 60k a year.  It is also one of the toughest academic high school in the US.  The full pay student body that McCallie attracts have virtually no athletic ability so it’s not like they can just grab kids out of the hall and turn them into wrestlers.
This is a huge disadvantage compared to the other private school in Chattanooga and throughout the state who have athletic kids in their normal student body.

Without the financial assistance for athletes who are interested in going to McCallie their sports programs will be awful and this is what has happened to the wrestling program for past 4 years.

MBA is just as expensive, no option to board though.  They are DEVELOPING kids. Maybe one of the best jobs doing so at that. So everything your saying is an excuse

You have every resource available to you that you need to develop talent. Baylor’s and McCallies best teams ever, developed their own talent. Just admit, they haven’t done a good job, not very involved, and honestly not sure the cared.

But, they will be good in a few years bc they don’t have to worry about developing any kids  bc they are getting a pretty solid crop of kids that are choosing McCallie.

  6. The expectation in that town…. and for those two programs is to win State Championships. Just like Coach Logsdon did. How many Championships did they win over the last 12 years?

Yes, most programs would love for the success that Bradley has achieved over the last decade, but not the standard for the program.

So, a new perspective is needed to get things the way it used to be.

If not, they will continue to get best by Cleveland. Disagree?

  7. I can guarantee you they wouldn’t bring him either. Blackmon will get the job. How long will it be before he gets them back on track. A few tough years ahead of him since Coach Smith left the program in a bad spot.

Dupill also pinned Fowler at the 2022 USA Wrestling Frank E. Rader SE Regionals in the Semi's and TF Belcher (9-0) in the Finals.  I would take  Dupill over both Fowler and Sturgil based in him pinning Fowler and Fowler pinning Sturgil

    We talking about Greco??

    Come on

Don’t worry we will. We want to get several of them just like my friends at Cleveland. They had two champs that transferred there and two high placers. I just need to get on this recruiting trail. Maybe even offer up some NIL money lol

How many if your starters trained with DB growing up ha

and only a freshman! There’s something brewing in Kingsport. I know this weekend didn’t quite go the way they wanted as a team, but they’re not going away, and they’re gonna keep getting a lot better for the next few years.

losing 6 starters…. they have 5 very good ones still there but will struggle at those other weights

and not bringing anyone up….unless they bring up a very undersized (but very good) Noah Watkins

I think they will have a tight one with Summit next year…. fighting for second it looks like.

  11. Big School to start with.

Sammy Shires won a tough weight, but was he the most dominant wrestler?

The award is very subjective. It’s going to always be a popularity contest.

Not saying Sammy didn’t deserve it, because he won a tough weight and earned his State Title.
