  1. So are the defending champions in each class the favorites to win until they don't, or are there new favorites to start the preseason?

I still like McKenzie in 1A as long as Savannah Davis is healthy. You can never count out Westview in 2A, they always reload. Jackson South Side in 3A will bring as much pressure as they want to give them a chance. In 4A, when has Bradley Central not been a house hold name?

What are some of your thoughts?

AAA should be wide open next year. Lot of teams losing pieces.

Upperman graduates some big pieces but always seems to be in the conversation. I heard they some nice middle school pieces coming.

Livingston graduates their bigs, but will still be good.

I think Greeneville graduates 3 starters (?) I know the Bailey kid graduates. She was their leading scorer.

Creek Wood graduates almost all their production and takes a step back

Elizabethton graduates 3 starters, including the guard that played so well in the state tournament.

Dyersburg will be really dangerous. Multiple scorers and athletes. You could make an argument for them being the preseason favorite.

South Side will take a step back, but I think, with the new district/region alignments, they get back to Murfreesboro.

South Gibson graduates 3 starters but probably has a region semifinal game against Fayette Ware to decide who goes to state tournament.

You never know what will happen in the transfer portal to change some of this.

Transfer portal, Ha Ha! Funny, but true. So I hear South Side has a kid from South Gibson who came eligible after Region Semifinals and another one or two coming from a private school there in town. @HawkGuy06 can you give us any incite on that?

Dyersburg has the granddaughter and possibly a transfer I believe that will be eligible.

South Gibson returns #12, #24 and #33 that saw a lot of minutes and I believe they had a decent middle school team also.

  3. Please don't downplay what South Side did by saying they got the whistles. Watching all 3 games, they were getting screwed by the refs and found a way to win. Their defense is impeccable and they never gave up. Their game with Elizabethton is a testament to kids who persevere. The championship gane was headed towards a blowout and the officials started blowing the whistle to slow the game down and give LA free throws and SS still found a way. Those kids and coaches earned their championship.

  4. Congrats SS! Those ladies had a gauntlet and battled through every test. Coach McNeal is as good as any. The post about FTs, well, from what I witnesses SS was getting hammered down low again today and there weren't any whistles until Lawson was determined to attack them. Livingston didn't really do much to get fouled. SS plays defense as good as anybody in the country. They deserve every win they got this week. Game 2 was impressive as they come. Good job Lady Hawks and Coaches.

How did the final play where Betsy was a the foul line unfold. Is it true that they coulda iced the game but missed 2 free throws? If so then all this discussion about the refs doesn’t matter. You gotta hit those shots if you’re playing championship ball. Unfortunately i haven’t had an opportunity to watch the replay. IF those free throws were the difference that’s a tough way to lose.

true and SS went 6-6 down the stretch

The way the game was called they allowed a lot of handchecking in aggressive play up top which played right into the game of southside. Upperman was never able to overcome the guard pressure by southside, which I knew would be a problem for us if they called it loose now. They call it tight different ball game but Best team won on the floor and that’s all that counts

This is ludacris. The game that I was watching,  the play was the same on both ends. First half South Side was getting hammered inside and no whistles. Yes South Side plays physical but Upperman was pretty close to the same. Don't make excuses, just accept it, like South Side did in 2017 and 2022.

Not at all you misunderstood my post. Sometimes we all have teams that come along once in a generation this might be that team for you guys. That’s all I meant.

Once in a generation? I guess you mean to win it? South Side has been a top team in the state for about 6 years now. I believe this is their 3rd appearance in 6 yrs which is not to shabby and they've loss their best player 2 of those 3. Upperman is good and the defending champion and a perennial powerhouse, but South Side is equally good I believe. This will be a good game nonetheless. We are all bias to our home teams so I understand.

Does anyone know when the last time that all 8 teams have came from just 4 regions?  Also it looks like they went with Region Champs on one side of the bracket and region runner ups on the other side, super weird if you ask me.

That sure does look to be what they have laid out.

Around 10 years ago somebody did that near the Murfreesboro area and I think they ended up getting kicked out of the postseason for it. As a fan, I wouldn't want to pay my money to watch a team intentionally stall out at game (some team in Oklahoma did that a few weeks ago). I get the whole "strategy" and what not, but it's also a disgrace to the game. Main reason why I'm a fan of installing the shot clock, which really shouldn't effect a lot of teams if they play with good pace.

I remember someone trying to avoid I believe it was Blackman. Got in big trouble

  10. I am not sure I have been to a game this year that a coach wasn't "crying" to the officials. I saw both Mitch and John Wilkins doing it, I saw Haskins doing it, I saw McNeal do it, I saw Embry do it, I saw Starks do it, I saw Chatman do it, I saw Liberty girls coach do it, I saw Fayette Ware boys coach do it, I saw Ayers do it, I saw TCA girls coach do it. I can go on and on. I believe as a coach that's part of your job. When I coached youth league, I did it too. As a coach you have to have your kids back and if that means getting on the officials case when you feel like your kids are getting fouled then that's what you are supposed to do. I like to see coaches working the officials.

I think this is probably a 12-15 point South Side win.

Foul trouble could play a role in this game.  Neither team has much depth.  Foul trouble for South Gibson could turn this into a blowout quickly.  Foul trouble for South Side could make this a tight game down the stretch.

Really good possibility that these two teams play a fourth time the following week.

A 4th contest will definitely happen. Seeing the other district has already made that clear. Chester, Lexington, McNairy and Hardin Co do not stand a chance vs South Gibson or South Side.
