No school in their right mind would want to touch that firestorm only 2-3 months since the story broke.
It's my experience that ADs have their lists of "guys they'd call" if the current head coach leaves. Whether Witten was on that list doesn't matter at this point. The fact is they don't have a coach yet and there's got to be a reason. If players didn't leave at the semester, they probably aren't leaving at all, so the cupboard is pretty full. They will be competitive in AAA. So it's not an issue of talent. Leaving resources or leadership as the primary reasons they haven't secured anyone.
True about the list of guys they’d call, be it the AD or whoever makes the hire. The list is probably more in their head than on paper though. And it’s more about if the HC were to suddenly pass away than resign.

And why guys leave head coaching gigs elsewhere to take assistants jobs at one of those schools. They still end up with significant pay increases.
Bingo. Me and a gentleman from Georgia had a spirited debate about this a year ago. He stated that he had rather be a HC at “Ten-Buck-Two” than a coordinator elsewhere. I disagreed, saying if the money was close I had soon be a coordinator. What people who haven’t been in the business don’t realize is as a HC you spend 20% of your time on football and 80% of your time on other junk. This is especially true at larger schools. You are responsible for every single detail, every single week. It gets old in a hurry.

....93 Cleveland team ...couldna been 92 or 94....on of them was sick great
...another team Lipscomb woulnt have beat......thinkin Cleveland might have beat a undefeated BA that was nation ranked that year.......Flea would have no ID on how big and fast that team was....
....maybe some of you east tn folks remember that team
..the list gets larger
Booger just sayin
93 Cleveland remains the most dominant team I have ever seen. 94 was above average. I’m still not sure how the 95 team won state.

Fullback was Chris Whaley - grown man
Chris averaged 10 yards a carry. We had 3 backs rush for over 1000 yards on that team. Even more amazing when you consider how little the starters played in the 2nd half because the issue was well decided by halftime.

And to think little Ol Haywood County beat Brentwood Academy in 94. It was a great game! Then went on to lose to Cleveland 7-6 in the championship
I believe that was the year that Cleveland’s Tony Styles couldn’t play due to an ankle injury. But I could be thinking about 1995.

Word was they were wanting to split it for a while and this was the opportune time. It's also likely timely as the football coach search moves on and perhaps it's even a more attractive job for a football call knowing they don't have to be the AD as well.
Unless it’s a very small 1A school, it’s almost unheard of for the HC to be the AD nowadays. When I was coming up 90 plus percent of HC’s doubled as AD’s.

he doesnt stay ANYWHERE long. He's said some stuff to kids that will make a grown man blush.
Wasn’t he at Knox West for quite a few years? The Cleveland situation was just a bad fit from both sides from what I heard. Didn’t hear anything good or bad from his time at Halls. As a coach with a state title on his resume, I’m sure he will land somewhere.

Here in Georgia, except for a very, very rare exception, you play all of your non-regions first. Once you start region play you face no more non-regions. When I was in Tennessee, I always found it very difficult to get a team up to play a non-region team the last few weeks of the regular season.

The difference is can AC handle the speed of Pearl Cohn. AC isn't a fast football team. If Pearl Cohn gets out in the open then it's a Touchdown.
Best post in this thread.

This has nothing to do with GQ but for me ETSU lost all credibility many years ago when they abolished the football program over lack of support. To me personally GQ would stand a better chance at Chattanooga recruiting out of Georgia then Johnson City. Look at Science Hill High school for example, no one comes to the games. Seen to much on social media so far from fans there for GQ to have a fighting chance. Sanders got out and knew what he would lose if he came back for another year. Far as Maryville goes Derek Hunt is the coach and will be for long as he wants. I can't blame him for the lack of great athletes we once had which did show this year and to be back in the final four I would have called you a liar to your face but here we are again. Derek will have a lot of things to address this winter and some tough decisions to make but the pipeline isn't empty by no means. We've just never been down this avenue before and I'm sure he don't want to go down it anymore either.
Mr. Barney I agree 100%. Coach Quarles was the runner-up at Chattanooga when they hired their current coach, but consistent with their history, they made the wrong decision. I did not mean this thread to show disrespect to Maryville or Maryville posters, particularly you, who along with Midtennfootball, are, to me, the most respected posters on this board.

I know that he won like 10,000 games, and lost like 2 in high school. Yet he takes over a league champion in college and goes 3-8. Could it be that he just happened to be the man sitting in the office in high school, and quite a few coaches could’ve won just as many games???

Glencliff High in Nashville is in the same boat. 40+ languages spoken. Most kids there think football means soccer. They get their brains beat out every week. They have never asked to move down.
In cases like Glencliff, and Howard, were they to have to go to 6A, the best decisions would be to play non-region, or simply drop the programs. BTW, it’s difficult to believe that just over 20 years ago Glencliff was state runner-up in the largest class? I asked a friend who lives in Nashville what changed? He told me about the makeup of the community changing completely.

I know that you have to take them one at a time, but by far the biggest challenge that you guys will face will come in two weeks!
-
While I agree it is a slippery slope, it seems crazy to have a group that has zero interest in football being the ones that determine which classification the football team plays in. Howard will never be able to compete in 5A. The head coach that left there a couple of years ago and I have mutual friends. He left for this very reason.

3 seasons. Had to follow a very successful coach though, which didn’t help.

But not completely unexpected. Shawn Peek was fired as head coach at Chattooga High School this morning.

Is reporting Chattanooga will be granted a two year extension to host the Blue Cross Bowl.

For the second straight day the coach of a monster job was fired here in Georgia. One was fired one year to the day after he was hired, the other was more successful, he made it two years before being escorted out the front door. “To whom much is given…..”

Don’t know but I did hear Chattanooga got a preliminary two year extension on the Blue Cross Bowl.
