Most people correlate "best" with wins. I have known many really good coaches that were not blessed with an abundance of talent. It doesn't take any " coaching" to win with an all-star team. A whole lot of travel coaches would be exposed if they took on an inner city team. If they were truly " the best" it would not matter where they coached.

I have also seen multiple teams with ridiculous talent underachieve year after year. They still win a bunch of games but their talent level should be championships.

Perhaps the question should be who has done more with less? That would be the REAL answer to who is best.

You said that it doesn't take any coaching to win with an all-star team but then you say that teams with ridiculous talent underachieve year after year.  Help me make sesnse of this.

This is a message I sent to the head of TSSAA:

I am concerned about schools having a huge home court advantage in basketball for region games.
I understand your connection with East Robertson, but that should not be a factor in this.
East Robertson hosts the region every other year. That doesn't help the E.R. girls' team, but it certainly gives the boys a huge advantage.
With Greenbriar, Springfield and White House Heritage nearby, any of those schools should hold the region so that the region tournament gives no school a huge advantage. Or, there must be other schools available east of East Robertson which would cut down on District 7 schools' travel.
Cross Plains is a 2-hour drive from Clarkrange for example.
I hope that TSSAA will correct this huge unfair advantage that East Robertson and other schools have had. Monterey also hosted the region last year. I am sure there are other schools doing the same thing.
7A never allows a member school to host. Our teams have played at Jackson County, White County and Livingston.

Hypothetically - So if Springfield let's say is not advancing to the Region, then you want another region to host their tournament at Springfield?  You want Springfield personell to be there to hold concessions, do gate, open the doors, setup, clean the gym, lock up, etc.

Hate to be this guy, but are refs across the state just awful or is it just South Central and Middle Tn associations that are just that bad?  It's hard to watch. TSSAA needs to host clinics and offer trainings because it is clear some of these men/women have never called or never played the game of basketball. I appreciate their commitment cause without them there is go game but the product that is on the court is crippling really good basketball games.

You should see a middle school game sometime.  They don't call enough fouls.  I get the game will last longer but that's too bad.  These kids are killing each other.  There was a ref last night too worried that the chairs weren't inside the box.  It was like 1/2 inch outside the box.

Ok, this is the way criticism should be conveyed. I can appreciate this point of view, put across this way.

Unfortunately, this will be becoming the norm, moreso in some areas than others. In my local association, last week, we had to inform schools (2 or 3 middle schools) that their contests would have to canceled/postponed till a later date due to lack of officials. This is the first time our association has  had to do that, ever. I'm afraid there will be a few more times in December and the early part of January that it'll happen again.

The turnover is just too high, we can't keep up with it. I'd guesstimate the 5 year retention rate for new officials in our area is now roughly 15% or less. So with 3 or 4 guys retiring every year, we've got to bring in 20 new faces evey year, just to break even. So when you were used to seeing, say, two veterans and a younger, less skilled ref making his way up through the ranks in a Tuesday or Friday night game, now you're going to maybe see one veteran, one younger developing guy (or gal,) and a fella that quite frankly has no business being in that game. But the spots have to be filled with the personnel that are available.

And to address your idea of the TSSAA offering constructive training, that's a pipe dream my friend. I suppose folks don't realize this, but the TSSAA doesn't really put anything monetarily into its officiating base. In fact, they actually rely on officials paying fees and paying to attend summer camps (where officials have to pay the state $200 to work an entire weekend for free in order to maintain 'postseason eligibility' while the TSSAA pockets the gate money) in order to meet their bottom line in the balance sheet. They do pay a stipend for a few supervisors in every area, but the reality is that you can't expect 2 or 3 people to be able to train/develop new officials efficiently, and especially not on the fly while the season is in progress. Any preseason training is paid for out of local associations' coffers, which are dwindling due to less officials in it to pay membership dues.

It's just not a good situation. And it's going to get a lot worse, I'm afraid to say.

Talking about stipends for supervisors?  Are you a supervisor - just curious.  I know that in MidTN the association charges 120$ per official.  Where does that money go?  It goes into the pocket of the assignor.  I know assigning is difficult to put in all those schedules and deal with cancellations, turn backs, etc.  I quit reffing because of this.

According to article coach violated the contact rule during the dead period by taking a player to a tournament.

Ok but that doesn't get you canned.

The expense of doing it and added responsibility is the reason they won't do it. Getting officials period has been a challenge and I would imagine this is just added responsibility they don't want. JMO.

Well it wouldn't be an official doing it anyway.  Officials don't keep the game clock either.

Its a shame that media outlets and certain sports editors have such influence with the TSSAA and can voice any displeasure they have with negative thoughts about the issue and they seem to be the only voice of reason.  Having a shot clock in basketball is no different than using play clocks in football.  Such a step back for the game and kids.

Every sports media person I know was in favor of it.  Regarding the shot clock in Football and Basketball, it's not anywhere near comparable.  It's not a step back at all.  We've been doing it for like forever.  I also don't think it has to do with the game itself but the logistics of it.  Liberty Creek in Gallatin already has one set up in it's gym because they were given bazillions of dollars by the school system, but not every school would be able to do this as easily.

Hello, I'm having trouble locating the schedule for a specific high school football game on CoachT.com. I'm interested in finding the date, time, and location of the game. Could you please guide me on how to access this information? I've tried navigating through the website, but I haven't been successful in finding the specific game I'm looking for. Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Just go to schedules.  2023 .  Click Football.  Look for the school

While it might be the rivalry that typically features 2 high ranked teams; saying it's the biggest rivalry is pure opinion. Just off the top of my head of some huge rivalries...

    South Pitt/Marion Co

    Oakland/Riverdale

    DB/Science Hill

    Portland/White House

    Germantown/Houston

    Lebanon/Mt. Juliet

I'm sure there are quite a few I'm forgetting.

    Franklin/Brentwood

    Greenbrier/Springfield (ridiculous)

    Marshall Co./Giles Co. (wild)

I watched the last two innings or so and the home plate umpire fell asleep on about three third strikes in the 8th inning. Milan should have been out of the inning tied 2-2. Neutral announcers were even talking about it.

You mean those pitches that were a foot outside or the ones the catcher missed and allowed two runs.

We need to get TSSAA to start season a week earlier....

What good would that do?  The window to finish would just be pushed up earlier too.  Everyone will be ready for Sectionals on Wednesday.

This new baseball format makes about as much sense as a screen door on a submarine.

This rain is now going to force teams to change their entire strategy for region/sectionals because some yahoos who don’t coach think they are smarter than everyone else.

Did you ever think about rain? Or smaller schools who don’t have resources as other schools?

The Region window needs to start sooner. If the TSSAA would have allowed schools to play Wednesday or Thursday given the forecast for yesterday and today we wouldn’t be in these predicaments.

But I am sure that one school who pushed this so much enjoys it because they got their nice shiny turf field so it doesn’t affect them.

There were several Regions that started Thursday.  You do realize they can start when they want to. TSSAA doesn't decide this.  Maybe check up on stuff.  Plus, just about everybody will be ready for Sectionals on Wednesday anyway.

This is a message board and you have every right to voice your opinion, but to respond to debate with "I wasn't talking to you" is asinine. When you make a statement, you should be prepared for someone not to agree with you. The poster who's reply generated your response didn't have a hateful opinion nor mentioned any other official, just politely contradicted views.

I noticed you like to criticize basketball officials as well.  That's awesome.

Your level of conduct on a bad day is what defines you...everyone has them, but rarely do people venture too far from their "normal" behavior and have such an effect on so many others. The media didn't tear this guy down. I suspect that he knew what people's perception of the situation would be, and attempted to get out in front of that with his side of the story...if that's the case, it's weaker than I'd have imagined. As for the "quick to judge" accusation, it doesn't take long to figure out that there's not much chance that this was anything other than a mature adult having a juvenile meltdown because some kid (then his coach) wouldn't bow to his authority, and if the ump was justified because actual rules were broken the catcher and not the entire crowd would have been delt with.

    • Once again those were my thoughts.  I have read some downright mean things about this.  People love this kind of thing and are quick to voice their hateful opinions.  Not just about him, but officials in general.    I'm not saying what he did was the right thing to do.  All in all we move on and learn.

Well from the article it doesn't sound like he was a good umpire at all that day.  He was the one that did an interview with the paper and told them "We know you’re large and in charge" or "‘Dixie Youth is looking for umpires" will get you thrown out of a game if he is umpiring. (Horrible look to be so thin skinned you would throw someone out for that, especially if he is such a good umpire like your saying).  Don't try to blame people responses on what he told the media because he didn't have to do that interview with the paper, so blame it on him for being so thin skinned.

Those were just my thoughts. I wasn't talking to you or anyone else.

  16. The umpire in question is a good umpire and a good person.   Maybe he was having a bad day.  People are so quick to judge.

Leave it to the news media and social media to tear someone down.

He's also a college umpire and has always done a good job.
