  1. No matter how weak Region I is, this is still a pretty nice accomplishment for Jellico. Seven wins is one of the best seasons for JHS since the 50's. Nice to see them take some steps towards respectability with a few wins and getting kids out to play. Hope they can be competitive against Rockwood and take some momentum to keep building up their program.
  2. That's why they need to play the home and home. Kinda funny how that doesn't work as bad when you've gotta go to the other team's house! Really a shame because there's some good possible matchups not getting played because of what they've done to people in that bowl game.
  3. Don't think the dates match up, but Corbin, KY needs at least one game. Ranked No. 2 in Kentucky 4A with a couple of kids going to Michigan. Corbin needs to schedule a home-and-home with some teams like Greeneville or Elizabethton instead of playing a few terrible local teams or only playing good East Tennessee teams in their bowl game.
  4. Good luck to Oneida the rest of the way. That's a good football team that will win a bunch of football games. Both teams found a few things to work on. Think Bowen tried to do too much at times being shorthanded with the receivers, but OHS created a lot of problems. Really hope that the two schools can keep this series going with a home-and-home. Think this type of game would be more common than not with the tradition at both places. This year and the '12 game that y'all won when our would be game-winning receiver was tackled at the six-inch line as time expired is some good small school football.
  5. Agree on the assessments from last year's game. WHS was the better team that day, but it doesn't get out of hand without all the turnovers. Think a more realistic score if those teams played again would've been something like 35-21, 42-28, 38-28, etc. Ball security is always important on opening day and figure it will be on Friday night.
  6. Agree. Not a fan of playing second fiddle to anything at Corbin unless they're writing a really big check. Can't imagine that it's better than what the gates would be for a home-and-home series. Only upside is that if you're wanting to just check out a really good football game is that the Corbin-Pikeville nightcap will be a dandy.
  7. Really hope this is a competitive game without the silly stuff that transpired both ways in the fourth quarter last year. I've never figured out why this game isn't played every year and would love to see it be a home-and-home. Similar communities and sized schools with excellent football tradition and it's such an easy 40-minute trip since 92 was redone across McCreary County. Since we only get three guaranteed games in district play, it would be incredible from this old Jacket's way of thinking to lock in a quality opponent that's a close drive instead of going all across Kentucky to places like Newport and Paintsville in recent years.
  8. Here's a little bit about Williamsburg. We're picked eighth in Class A. Syd Bowen and Martin Shannon, the main offensive weapons from last year are back for their senior seasons. Jury is still out on depth and how we'll run the ball, as well as handling the run game on defense. This is the quick preview in the Lexington H-L's Class Top 10 story: 8. WILLIAMSBURG Head coach: Jerry Herron (17th season). Last year: 8-4. District champion. Lost 50-21 in region finals to Pikeville. Quick look: Herron has eight starters back on offense and defense and believes his senior dual-threat quarterback, Sydney Bowen, is among the best players in the state. Bowen threw for 2,251 yards and 25 TDs while also rushing for 914 yards and 11 more scores. Martin Shannon (860 receiving yards, 14 TDs) returns as Bowen’s primary target. Linebackers Hunter Thomas and Griffin Bates each topped 80 tackles in 2021.
  9. Think y’all will be ok. Some good pieces up front and in the run game. Lots of things to clean up and wonder how much of last night was just frustration. On our end, the wide receiver that moved in from Richmond was supposed to be a basketball game changer, but made a huge difference in giving Bowen a second big play threat beyond Rainwater. No idea since we didn’t get to scrimmage anyone. Good luck to the Indians and hope y’all have a good year.
  10. Hoping to, but early kickoff ain't making it easy with work.
  11. A quick glance at Williamsburg from the Lexington Herald-Leader's Class A football preview where we're picked sixth in the state. Also, more news from the Cumberland Valley Pigskin Classic is Corbin has picked up Christ School from Asheville to replace Rhea County as their opponent. Safe travel to our side of the border next Friday night. 6. WILLIAMSBURG Head coach: Jerry Herron (16th season). Last year: 6-3. District 8 champs, region champs. Lost 27-7 to Kentucky Country Day in state semis. Quick look: Herron believes he has one of the best players in the state in dual-threat junior quarterback Sydney Bowen who threw for 1,555 yards and 19 TDs and rushed for 566 yards and another nine scores last season. The Yellow Jackets also return senior linebacker Chris Howard, who led the team with 114 tackles. Senior wideout Jayden Rainwater figures to be Bowen’s primary target as Herron looks for a few more playmakers.
  12. Pretty sure there was a good sized fight in the 1984 game, so that's why the schools didn't play for a long time. That 2012 game was a dandy. We got up two scores and y'all hit a long field goal right before halftime to go up 17-14. Had a pass in the end zone that would've won the game on the final play and it was broken up. Definitely the kind of game that made both teams better in November and December. That's why I hope this series will be a little more consistent.
  13. Most of the pieces from a state semifinalist are back. Sydney Bowen is going to be one of the best quarterbacks in Kentucky Class A and is a run/pass threat. Whether we make another run is going to be determined by the guys in the trenches. Way more interesting opening test this year than the traditional Jellico game!
  14. Checking in from the other side of the border. Hope you guys make it through the scrimmages healthy for the Williamsburg game. Excited to see this series finally get back going. Two good programs, similar communities that love football, and a short trip. The '12 game at Oneida was an absolute classic and maybe we'll get another in a few weeks up at Corbin.
