  1. I saw a lot of Tornado T-shirts at the MHS vs. SD game last night. You all are welcome to come over any time. You helped to boost attendance which helps increase the gate receipts. Now it is officially "ALCOA WEEK" for some. "MARYVILLE WEEK" for others. It's go time. I can't wait.

  2. I think the "kid" asked a good question about the names on the jerseys. It reminds me of last year when people were asking about the "OM" on the Melrose helmets.

Now for you conspiracy theorists. Think about this one. Why is the road in front of Sam Houston Elementary that runs up the hill and ends at the front door of Maryville High School named "MELROSE STREET". Why is there a street on the other side of the Aluminum Curtain (ALCOA) named RANKIN ROAD. I'll get the people in the X-Files unit on the phone because it's football time in Tennessee.

  3. I don't think a lot of Maryville fans hate Alcoa. I know I don't. I think most from both sides feel like we hate each other one Friday night a year and that is it. Alcoa has a very long and rich athletic tradition in both football and basketball. With the tradition Maryville enjoys it just makes the rivalry even more unique. When these two teams play on Aug 25th it will make the third time since 2000 that two defending State champions have squared off. This sends an already electric atmosphere right through the roof.

Maryville and Alcoa fans keep up with each other and yeah we bicker back and forth kind of like brothers do. But they have my total respect and I would like to think they feel the same way about us. As for any haters that may exist it is like another poster said "success breeds contempt". Each year that we have both made it to Murfreesboro I have gone down a day early and cheered for them on Friday night, and have seen many of them doing the same for us on Saturday. I am hoping that I am able to do that again in four months or so.

I just wish that Alcoa and Maryville could both play on the same day in Murfreesboro. Back in the '70's Maryville and Alcoa both played for a Championship on the same night at Alcoa High School. I believe it was '78.

    No Hate here either...

  4. I keep reading posts from "Upper East Tennessee" where people refer to their conference as the "Mountain Lakes Conference." They used to have the "BIG 10" or "BIG EAST" or maybe both up that way. I was just wondering is this anything official or is this just the way the schools or the media refer to that region. Region 1- 4A tells me alot more about where it is than a name. Is this just a throwback to the way it was before the playoffs started in 1969? Do we need to come up for a name for Region 3-4A?

  5. In William Blount's first year of football (1979) they played at Knox Doyle (now known as South-Doyle) when Jimmy Colquitt was the punter. A fog rolled in during the game and settled about 7 feet above the field. The players could all see each other, but the players could not see the stands, scoreboard, or press box because of the fog. When Colquitt would punt, the ball just disappeared in the cloud above the field.

  6. Hoover, AL is also going to Tulsa to play Union. That should be a good one.

Chase Nelson who is an incoming Freshman for the Vols played for Union and I think Macenzie Adams, who played at Union, is in line to be the starting QB @ Vandy. I'll be pulling for the Redskins in this one. Union played a home and home against a California team a few years back. They also had a deal set up where 2 Tulsa area teams played 2 Houston Teams at Union's Tuttle Stadium. It was a regular season game but it had a bowl atmosphere.

  7. Professor Rebel why are you concerning yourself with insignificant 2A "stuff." What does "class" have to do with it anyway? To me that is just a code word used by Maryville people who always look down their noses at Alcoa. You are always looking to jump on the morals, ethics and family values at Alcoa. You sure are an expert.

He said your coach had class. So by your definition he said your new coach is a Maryville person who always looks down his nose at Alcoa. I really don't see you you deduced all of this from the statement about Rankin having too much class. By the way that '89 Tornado Team had.... I had better not say it. They were an awesome team. I even drove to Marion County to root for the Tornados. That Shannon Mitchell was fun to watch. He had a lot of .... (not gonna say it). I remember talking to his mother at Blount Memorial Hospital. She was a real nice lady. She had a lot of ....not gonna say it. By the way I think Alcoa beats CAK by 10-14 this year.

  8. It's not my website.

It is Rebelnations website.Rebelnation is a Maryville guru. A legend.

I wanted to give you the credit Ron. It is a neat site it even mentions that team from the other side of the Aluminum Curtain. Was I right about "...back in '82?"

  9. quarles inherited a program, rankin built his own. that right there should say something.

Yes, the Maryville program was established but GQ took it to "another level".

As for smack, I heard on the Sports Animal (WNML 99.1, 99.3, 990, for those of you in Middle and West TN) yesterday Rankin said that he was not afraid of Maryville and something about how Maryville never came to him to play his Riverdale Team. When Questioned G.Q. responded that Riverdale never sought out a game with Maryville either. I don't know if this started with a reporter asking Rankin, "Are you afraid of Maryville?" or the exact context so take it with a grain of salt.

As for school districts, I still don't think all of the Rutherford County people understand the situation in Blount County. There are three distinct school systems. Systems, not districts or zones or whatever. If you live in the city of Alcoa you go to Alcoa. If you live in Maryville you go to Maryville. Unless you want to go to a County School. Since your parents pay city and county taxes you can go to either Heritage or William Blount. If you live in Blount County outside of Maryville or Alcoa you have to pay tuition to go to either Maryville or Alcoa to make up for not paying city taxes. Or if you live in Alcoa you can pay tution to Maryville and go there or if you live in Maryville you can pay Alcoa tuition and go there. See it's simple. I know of families that have had kids in multiple school systems.

  10. I won't miss this game thats for sure. I will be sporting my Marroon and Silver shirt. :thumb:

I can't agree with you on that one reddevilfever, I'll be there but I will be wearing Red and Black. I can't wait to see that shirt though. The Question is, is this the first game for both teams this year or is Alcoa still playing a "Week 0" game. Last year they played in a KY "Bowl" against Hopkinsville. Is that a home and home contract or just a one year deal?

  11. Until I see something directly from him, I would not be so sure, Oak Ridgers should know from their search last year, when the news was quick to spread that coach Gaddis was coming back.

Rankin was interviewed live on Knoxville TV Station WBIR-Channel 10 standing in front of Alcoa High School on the 6:00 pm (EDT) newscast. He was wearing a maroon shirt. I guess you won't believe it till he shows up with the Tornados at the Blount County Jamboree.

  12. Not a ticked off parent, but glad to hear he won't take the crap from parents or kids. That's exactly what we need. If this is true, it's going to be an interesting year!

Oh, and, TURBO: The colors are maroon and gray/white, not silver! :thumb:

When I used to play "back in the day" I had a lot of silver on my helmet from Alcoa players. I actually think it was aluminum.
