  1. You would be mistaken then... I have no dog in that fight for the coaching game. I think any man (or woman) who gives as much of their time and talent as it takes to be a coach is a winner. I would agree with you I am not thrilled that they laid out a plan to search for a coach and changed what was a good plan. I will say however that given all the facts they had at the time they probably made a good choice. I did not say he was a bad coach just that we were out coached last night. One of the problems with the web is that folks hide behind their screen names. If you would like to know who I am just ask, I am not ashamed of who I am or what I think. PM me, and we can talk about the game, coaching, kids, or life in general. As long as you keep it factual and not emotional I am in. Football is a game that prepares you for life. Life is about lessons. Learn something from everything and you will always get better. As for cheering for the Alcoa team and being 100% behind them I will always be there for them. They have never let me down on what I look for in a good football game which is hard working kids playing with a lot of heart. You don’t have to win to learn the best lessons that football teaches you, in fact, some of the best lessons are learned from loosing. Football as a game is as close as it comes to real life in a sport. I was lucky to have played and to have the best of coaches and the worst of coaches in my time in the game. Both teams last night showed the very best in our young people (except maybe the unsportsmanlike like penalty early). None of the young people who played last night has anything to be ashamed of. In every game that there is a winner there has to be a loser. I think Bear Bryant said it best “I never lost a game, but sometimes the clock ran out on me". If you disagree with me, use your brain and tell me where there is error in my statement. Do you think we were overmatched last night? Do you think we played & coached the very best game we were capable of last night? Or do you just prefer that people fall into line and not learn from their experiences? This is public forum, enlighten me. And as a final thought, why be angry about a game?
  2. I am not sure what football game you watched last night but it was not the Alcoa game. The play calling last night was so predictable that I called almost every call from the stands. If I can do it you know the coach on the other team can. When you have a work horse, extremely talented offense and you can only generate 2 offensive touch downs (and I am not sure you can give them credit for both as i think the long pass touch down was a broken play) you are not coaching well. Look at Fulton's attack last night. It was shut down for most of the first half. Thier coach regrouped, and changed his strategy while he was still in the game. We changed our strategy when it was life or death. I said this in my first post of the year. The style of football Alcoa played last night (not counting the defense which did a very good job) is not the style of football that led them to two gold balls in the last two years. And before all of you fans jump on me about having something against the coach, you are wrong. I am talking strickly how the game was coached last night. An a closing thought, what kind of coach says "I dont think you will see a better team in 2a this year". There was a time in the last few years where folks said there is not a better football team in TN, let alone 2a
  3. That was some great high school football. Once again Alcoa was out coached and the I dont even want to get into the calls by the ref's. If you are on this board and you are a fulton fan or supporter and you dont post a big old "I told you so" you are missing a world class chance. Fulton has a great team, or atleast played great tonight.
  4. After last years two championship games both a buddy and I agreed we would pay a 100 bucks a head to see a game between those two teams in the post season. Blount Co is blessed with some football talent!!!
  5. I was there as well. A good game and flashes of what will come... for both teams
  6. That comment would be my only complaint so far with the new coach. I dont ever want to keep the game close especially against Maryville because Coach Quarles is a magician. If I was playing them I would want to crush them soundly (if you could) . Play the game close sounds like prevent defense, which almost always kills you in the end. As for Cobb being up for the test. My money is on that he will be known as one of Alcoa's great players some day. Hard to believe he is a JR., and if you look at his size this year to last year he made big strides over the summer. In fact as a team as a whole I would put them on par with last years, maybe a little stronger in some places and a little weaker in others. For those with season tickets you will get your monies worth.
  7. There is no doubt that this year's Alcoa has a different feel than last years team and thier are some things that point to a different style of team play but I dont know how it comes down to more discipline on this team. The only real indicator so far is the lack of penalties (yes there were some in Maryville game unlike last years team). I think that the new coach has put his stamp on this team. They play a more conservative game then last years team. Is conservative bad, not in of itself. If I compare the two styles of play both can win for you. Being old school I think the conservative play puts you in charge of one aspect of football most people over look, The clock. When i look at this years team they appear a little more confident and mature. Last years team was a little wilder and off the hook to borrow a phrase from todays vernacular. As for talent on this team. I dont know how Alcoa does it with such a small pool of players but they come up with some great players year after year. Two more comments, No one is going to catch shivy when he gets a one one or one on two situation, and if Bart Hicks hits you solid you need more than a BC powder to make you feel better. In closing I think their play matches the style of the coach. The question yet to be answered is will they both produce champions.
  8. Alcoa has the same kicker as last year... and he has a big foot
  9. Actually no, I dont have a beef with the coach. It comes down to how much clock you have to work with, how many plays it takes to go 80 yards and the fact that I dont see this coach running up the score. He does not seem to be a guy that would put 40-50 points over the opponents score. I think he is a bigger man than that and does not have anything to prove. Ok back to the lesson... Football math 101... run the ball 80 yards in 4-5 yard increments takes about 7 to 7.5 minutes of the clock. right there you have nearly 30 minutes of a 48 minute football game. so that means the other team will have it 18 minutes. I said they will probally make one TD so that number sounds fair as well 30 + 18 is your 48 minutes. That is all of the clock we get... As for going deep every time. Does not work. If you go a little of every where as well as a balanced inside and out running game (look at Maryville last week) and you will win all the games that your defense will keep you in. After watching the defense last week and thru the summer in practises I dont see us having a real issue with any team defensively unless they are able to pin point pass us in the gap between our linebackers and our deep guys. Even if they did I dont see anyone getting more than 2-3 touch downs that way. I am a life long of student of football having played thru college, coached, and even wore the zebra stripes a few times. I am open to any comments you are willing to put forth on the facts I have put forward to dispute them. One last comment, maybe living here and having such a close ties to the Alcoa program where it seems coaches have come and gone a lot makes you a little defensive.
  10. I dont see the Alcoa team going big numbers. The nature of the offense has changed with the coach. If they score more than 28 points i will really be surprised. Not that they could not but it will be dictated by play calling. It is hard to score more than 28 points on the ground. The proof will be found next Friday night. As for the other team scoring, i think they will get 7 points. I am sure atleast one lucky play will get thru. 28-7
  11. I think you are wrong on that point, in playing Alcoa, Maryville gets a real chance to "test thier metal". The greatness of football as a life lesson is to teach the players team work and heart. Both of the teams last night played like life champions...
  12. One thing for sure... That was a great football game and both teams played thier hearts out. OK two things for sure, the best football in TN is played within 50 Miles of Blount County...
  13. You are still having problem with that reading part PerpVol... I said he coached a great game, the team was well prepared, made no comparisons to last years coach and said it was great football.... I also asked you to debate any of what i wrote as wrong in any of my posts. I guess i am not the only idiot on the forum. Maybe you need some help with what debate means. You cannot however debate the fact that tonight Alcoa played to what amounted to a one dimensional offensive football game. Also, i would even say that had GQ been our coach tonight the game would have gone our way.
  14. The defensive coaching is basically unchanged from last year. That might have been some of the best defensive play that i have seen Alcoa put on. In fact if the defense had not play so well tonight it would have been real whipping. I think the Maryville coach did an outstanding job of verrying his call playing and offensive attack to get the points they did. There is no doubt in my mind that Maryville's Coach is probably if not the best, he is in the top 5 best high school coaches I have seen put a team on the feild. A real mark of class on his part, and if i meet him out at lunch sometime i will buy his for him, was his call to not go for that last touchdown when he knew he had the game won. That was class...
  15. I must be an idiot, but you cannot read. I never said they were not well coached. They were coached to near perfection to play as a 4A or 5A team. The team was pretty well prepared, The came out a little flat, but I expected it since they had a buy the first weekend of the season. The coaching tonight reminded me a lot of when Spurrier went to the pro's to coach. It was not the same game as much as he wished to make it so. He coached some great college ball with pro players which did not work. He realised that he would not change thier stripes and went back to what he was suited to. My comment is that the coach did not play traditional Alcoa football and play to thier potential strengths. They have some great hands on that football team (Some would say 2 division one prospects). They also have some very good outside speed with a highly mobile QB, and a good inside game when the others are working and you keep the defense guessing. Compare the number of running plays to touch downs scored with what they did when they attempted a three dimensional passing game tonight. I think if you will look at passes over 15 yds they scored on one and dropped one. As soon as they made the long strike the corners and ends eased up some which opened the running game up a touch. The "all over you", 3 demensional game plays to speed and mobility of Alcoa football. And unless you are afraid to actually debate, and not just call me an idiot, then explain to me how what i have just said was wrong.
  16. What a great high school football game. Once again we are schooled by the Maryville coaching staff. The teams were probally as evenly matched as i have seen them in the 4-5 years i have been watching Alcoa & Maryville football so far as talent and ability. Alcoa players did great, our new coach did a great job of coaching his old team (a big school run straight at you football team) but did not coach the Alcoa team standing on the sideline behind him. The few times he played Alcoa football we dropped a long pass down feild and the other we scored. Right wrong or otherwise, the Alcoa football i have seen in the past, and they are suited for was a very fast paced three demensional football game. The reason the run works because the pass works. We were very one dimensional today and Maryville never feared the pass, mostly because we rarely tried one. I love football, and at one time loved run straight at you football. That is not the football of past Alcoa winning football teams. I guess what i am wondering is will Alcoa be able to change thier stripes, or will the Coach change his. On the bright side, it was great football !!!
  17. I am not sure why the other one was locked but there is a lot to discuss about the upcoming game. I am not originally from here but I have come to love this game. Two titan teams, and only one winner possible. So what is the word on the game? Koop
  18. Does the loss of the 4 players listed in the Paper today change the outlook of the game in your mind?
  19. Since the Maryville game is over, it is now officially Alcoa Vs Maryville week. How is this years game gonna shape up. Thoughts and comments ???
  20. The Cobb & Shivy show with the QB Option will be something to watch next year. I caught glimpses of it this year in practise. In the ancient days when I played the Option Teams were the one to beat. We will have to see however what next year brings.... Oh by the way, all the good hands folks will be back next year too
  21. Not in this group, and being and Alcoa fan, but you have got to love the play calling at Maryville in the final. Folks might give them a hard time for trick plays in the championship game but if they are legal, and they help you win the big one I say go for it. I love to see a game with razzle dazzle in it. Also, parting thought, loved the fake punt at the end by the 5a team to close out the game. Who would have thought a fake punt for the first down to keep the ball for the last 100 seconds to help ensure a victory. Both of these are examples of coaching at the highest level. Having moved here from the Carolina's last year I am very impressed with TN football. Even if my kid brother keeps telling me TN is not know for football.
  22. What game were you watching, he was the Offense MVP....
  23. Speak for yourself. I dont pull against anyone. I love it when my team wins but that is the extent of it. Even being an Alcoa fan I will pull for Maryville every game of the year but one. What some of you posters miss is that football is a game. The best game in my book, but still a game. The young men who are lucky enough to have the oportunity to play at the high school level should take away from it some life lessons that will mold them for a life time. The young people we watch on Friday nights are our bankers, and lawyers, and clerks and police officers in the future. It is always a good thing to want to do your best but never a good thing to want others to do badly to elevate yourself. There is no shame in competition, even if you come up short, because in every game there is a winner there must be a loser. Sometimes the ones who get the most out of competition are not the winners on the score board. For all the young men I watched play this season. Take it from an old player. Treasure every minute of it. It will be gone in a twinkle of your eye.
  24. Shivy is a great player, and a great youngman. I watched all the games and he came to a bunch of the midget games as he has family on the team. The most remarkable thing I think this young man has is a great attitude about life. I have never not seen him smiling and he is very humble. It is great to see him play around with the young kids. If he, and many of the other Alcoa players, is a thug I hope my 3 sons grow up just like him.
  25. The best team, on that night anyway, was McCallie, then Tyner and Loudon. The best team we played all year was Maryville hands down. I would pay 100 bucks to watch them play a post season match !!! Now that would be some High School football
