  1. Hey just a reminder. The original question was which Tennessee High School has produced the most NBA players. So far, I haven't heard anyone topping Memphis Treadwell Hank McDowell Chris Gardner Andre Turner Elliot Perry Penny Hardaway That is five NBA players all are guards with the exception of Hank McDowell who played forward.
  2. Tom Marshall, Western Kentucky Univ. and 7th pick in the first round of the 1954 NBA Draft by Rochester Royals. He only average 5.7 points per game as a forward. Also he played about 6 years. Hey, he deserves to be on the list. Thanks for the post.
  3. Switchhitter, you brought up a great point. I haven't thought about the Cedric Wilson angle. Bobby "Bingo" Smith was a multisports player at Melrose also, Football, Basketball, and track. I think Cedric must get strong consideration. Thanks for the post. Oh, one thing you forgot to mention, Cedric was a very good pitcher in baseball.
  4. Yes, I knew that Popeye played at Murray State. We were discussing the most succesful Tennessee High School players based on carrer. I'm making a case for Bobby "Bingo" Smith. Popeye was mentioned because he is from Dresden TN. From there he went to Murray State, Houston Rockets, Dallas, Toronto, Boston, Washington, and finally Golden State. Bingo played all of his 10 years in the NBA with Cleaveland. His #7 jersey is retired.
  5. Your points are well taken. Also, you are correct about the sectional game at Wooddale and although both teams were going to the state, that game had meaning. That's like saying the district and regional championship game is meaningless. But the original point is this. Ted Anderson was not considered to be a great bench coach. He got beat in the district by a better system, Coach Ford's at Fairley. However, in-spite of finishing 4th in the district tourney, he advanced to the state.
  6. After reading the most recent posts on other threads, I'm going to bump this one back up.
  7. Coach, there has always been great coaching at Bartlett; however, your school illustrates my point on that it takes both talent and system to be sucessfull on a consistent basis. Bartlett, did not have great sucess until you got that talented player from Westwood. Historically, Bartlett has a winning program because of the coaching, but because of the lack of tallent never really advance very far. There has been many times a team which has great talent and what appears not to be great coaching that competed for the state championship. Also, I see Ridgeway giving teams fits, but without Niles will not advance to the state tourney. Good luck to Bartlett in the tourney. One more note, Hamilton a few years back finished 4th in the District 16AAA tourney, and won the sectional tourment to advance to the state. They beat Bartlett.
  8. Are you saying that team ball is not played in Memphis? White Station, Raliegh-Egypt, Fairley, Woodale and Ridgeway begs to differ.
  9. My pick is Raleigh-Egypt. They have the total package. (Talent, coaching, and history.)
  10. I understand your point and I agree for the most part. However, it doesn't always means success, especially in the NBA. Let's take our native son, Penny Hardaway. Penny was always known for his unselfish play. His ability to see the court and make passes was outstanding, sometimes dumbfounding. However, his unselfish play was considered a weakness at Orlando and injuries crushed his carrer. Even if he had remained healthy, his style of play would had been considered a weakness in the league. Say what you will about the style of play in the NBA, but it is still considered to be the highest level in that chosen profession, basketball. Thad has more upside and will have a better chance of succeeding the the leauge. Brandon, will have a very good college carrer, but I don't know about the NBA.
  11. Where did "Mister" Jennings from East Tennessee State University played high scholl ball?
  12. Penny played at Treadwell along with many others, Robbie Robinson (1977 coach's son), Hank McDowell, Andre Turner, Elliot Perry, and Cedric Gardner. I understand the error, I can't begin to say where all the great players from Nashville played except David Vaughn, Whites Creek and Brandon Wright.
  13. I'm not sure, but I think it's Jackson Northside. R-E is the class of Region 7AAA although I thought R-E was in Region 8AAA. The second best team is up for grabs; during the past two seasons, teams from the Jackson area have been outstanding.
  14. Per capita? Are you talking per capita based on the school's population or the city's? Besides, I'm talking about the total number of players and you named two with one possible. Nice try. (Note: Bobby Parks was one of my favorate Tigers. (As in my handle Tigersteve, Memphis State University Class of '86.)
  15. Again, it comes down to players and coaching. I watched Tippet from Trezevant, to White Station, to ECS. If he doesn't have the players he won't win. When White Station was in 16 AAA he was getting killed, against those coaches that people say can't coach. Coach Ford at Fairley has the same system he ran at Memphis Tech. When he has the talent his system works fine. (He has a winning record against Tippet.) Prime example, was the Fairley team with Corey Beck, D. Steward, and Martin. It was ranked in the top 5 by USA Today, but lost to a David Vaughn led Whites Creek team in the state semifinals. But there has been other times when Ford's system have handcuffed the team. The last two Fairley squads were amoung his most talented, only to lose in close games against Jackson Northside.
  16. Does Dyer County still have that great gyn, located in the middle of the school's cafeteria? Granted, I haven't been there since 1977, but I still remember that gym.
  17. I tend to agree. However, many teams have won a state championship in spite of their coach. For example a Kingsbury team that went 37-1. Additionally, teams can be overcoached. For example, last year's Fairley team. It must be a combination of good coaching and talent. Good coaching also means knowing when to let your players play. Jimmy Adams is an example, and Wes Henning is another.
  18. The word on the street is that Young outplayed Wright during AAU ball and the camps. That's is why Young is rated higher. Remember, Young's AAU team won the National championship last year. Memphis teams have a history of winning AAU National championships.
  19. I watched Hamilton play against Bolivar Central and I totally agree with you. I think Raleigh-Egypt has a better shot at the state title. I see two losses for Hamilton. Don't be surprised if the first loss happens in the District 16 AAA tournment. (Fairley or Kingsbury)
  20. Thanks, I forgot about Chris Gardner from Treadwell. Don't you forget about Hank McDowell.
  21. Coach T, what happened to my Plus Membership I paid for? You have my money, I want my service.
