  1. lol, I know what your thinking, sorry though, I'm not who you think I am, however I do know what your talking about and he is waiting to see what happens, I think if a slot works out he would love the opportunity to work with Benny Monroe.

I know what you're saying. I talked to him yesterday & he said that he understands completely because he was in the same boat. He had no idea either, in fact, he was about to take another job. He has guys who want to come work with him, so it shouldn't be a big problem (IF they can find spots for them) to fill some spots.

He was offered the head job at Lenoir City twice. He turned it down both times (maybe like 6 & 4 or 3 years ago), but has kept a good relationship with the administrators. So, he can put a word in for Gossett if he needs it.

Are you still going to Ooltewah or are you interested?

  2. Dont' get me wrong, I'm glad Derrick was hired so he can get to work, I know he will do a good job, however if they knew from day one he was the guy, the administration should of let the other candidates know, or at least given them some indication. However, I realize that isn't always possible. Anyways, who is he going to retain and who is he going to try and hire as a staff. This will be his biggest challenge in my mind.

Thanks to the No Child Left Behind Act (and don't get me started on that), it is that easy. Because of NCLB, the definition of "highly qualified" has become very simple: "Anyone with a bachelor's degree who has been certified as a teacher and can demonstrate content knowledge through coursework or testing is deemed "highly qualified' under the law." As the law stands, all states have to have their core subject classes (History, English, Math, & Science) taught by "highly qualified" teachers by the end of the current school year. Because of the broad definition given by NCLB, states are pretty much free to decide what constitutes a qualified teacher. In the state of Georgia, any teacher who passes the Praxis exam is certified highly qualified. So, if he takes the Praxis there & then transfers his certificate, he's good as gold. BUT that won't be necessary anyway.

There wasn't anything going on. They knew that he was their choice from the first interview, but they wanted to wait until they didn't have to hire him with "stipulations." Their hand was forced when he got two other offers on the same day.

  3. I'm sure what your saying is correct. I am glad he is able to begin work next week, as far as the reciprocal certificate from Georgia, be careful, even though georgia certificates are reciprocal, it's not that easy, he could take the praxis and become certified in Georgia, but not necessarily highly qualified, I guess it depends on if McMinn County will hire a teacher that isn't highly qualified in that area. I hope it works out for him either way, I'm just curious to know why was it that it was going to be a Summer hiring, or at least that is what the administrators were saying, and then all of a Sudden he is brought in, was there something going on the whole time that we didn't know about or did pressure get the best of them.

One resigned before the decision. Word on the street says that Gossett is looking to leave. The other rumor is that everyone is on equal footing right now. Everyone is just an assistant until Derrick has time to evaluate them. Current Coordinators probably don't like that.

  4. However the board does have the power to tell the Superintendent to give the go on hiring the coach, the board has more power than we all think, they just don't use it in this county. Most school boards run their systems, just not here.

I am beginning to agree, the hold up is not coming from the administration at the high school, but from the central office, you would think the school board would show some cohunna's and step up. Afterall, are they not the ones who control the school systems, they are our elected officials if I'm not mistaken, and unless i'm wrong, Dr. Forgerty is appointed by them. It seems to me the school board needs to step in.

McMinn County BOE does not care about the athletic situation at either high school. the top dogs just worry about themselves.

  6. I used to think Polk County politics were the worst in the region but I'm beginning to believe McMinn County BOE has them beat. Polk fires a good guy for no apparant reason and McMinn County BOE won't let their school hire a guy, I guess the thing I don't understand is that McMinn BOE just created an assistant superintendant position out of the blue and the Superintendant just signed a two year contract extension, however they can't hire a football coach because they have to hire a vocational spot first. Rumors have began that they might not hire until Summer. Unbelievable, what about spring practice, I also read no coaches there are opening up the weight room, it will take years to recover if they don't do something quick, very quick.

  7. According to the Chattanooga paper this morning, Massey is the man to lead the red raiders

I bet whoever is the last to hire will be last in the region. The other will probably be second to last, its amazing in McMinn County, they can create a spot for the Assistant Super., talk contract extensions for the current super, but can't hire a football coach because they have to fill a vocational spot first, I bet if it was basketball they would of already hired them.

  8. I agree with you, Meigs overachieved last year. My picks are

    1)Notre Dame

    2) Polk

    3) Howard

    4) Meigs

    5) East Ridge

    6) Grundy

    7) Central

    8) Tellico

    9) Sequoyah

I would say you could move Sequoyah in front of Tellico and Central considering they aren't going to have coaches. Maybe the boys can pull it off by themselves.

  9. You are correct, I did overlook that post, I for one think both guys just want a chance to take this program to the next level, though I am pulling for Davis, I know he thinks the world of Derrick and I'm sure Derrick does him also, good luck all.

For who has slammed Derrick, see CORLEONE's post. Calling Derrick a loser can in no way be construed as positive or encouraging. I "just hate" to see ANYONE bashing Derrick for going into a program that needs work. Isn't that what Central is?

I was simply making a point for CORLEONE. Just like he can take things about "my guy" and put an ugly spin on them, I can take things about "his guy" and do the same. Funny, huh?

I wish everyone the best & I also hope that someone makes a decision soon. It's a shame, though, that there's no way to get them both. There's only one head coaching spot & 2 guys with head coaching ability. At this point in their careers, I wouldn't expect one to work for the other.

  10. I really have debated about responding to this post, but like the previous poster just said, I can't help it, lol. First of all, why be negative towards either guy. I don't think Johnny was being negative, I don't think I have been negative towards either, I have only stated positives. I just hate to see relivmom bashing Davis for being able to be a part of a good program, last time I checked however, Northwest has never been a Georgia Powerhouse, if I'm not mistaking and if my research is correct, Northwest was 4-6 and 4-6 the two previous years before Davis joined the staff, his first year there they went 9-3 and won their first ever playoff game. Am I saying he did all that, NO, I'm saying he was a part of a strong staff that worked together to have success. You say he resigned when he felt pressure, What makes you think he had pressure to resign. Maybe he is like Derrick and would like to come back closer to home, I don't know, only he knows, but I assure you it wasn't because he received pressure. I guess my point is this, I have seen lots of post on here, some supporting Derrick and some supporting Davis, keep it at that, support your guy and if he gets it great, if not, dont bash the others. I'm sure if you asked Derrick, Davis, and Gossett you would never hear one negative word about the other, and that is how it should be. Good Luck to the future of McMinn Central and their new Coach, whoever he may be.

  11. Not against Derrick at all, all I know about him is second hand and nothing has been negative. I have never said anything negative about Derrick, from what I hear he is a great guy, I know Heath likes him and they are friends. Your right I do know Heath, I know him well. And no I'm not a student at central and I don't teach there, I just have a lot of friends in that community. Actually my opinion is that I would like to see them both there, I don't know is that can actually happen. As far as the raider fan stuff goes, I could care less about MTSU I happen to Like John Gruden when he was with the Oakland Raiders. What we need to remember is that no matter what we say on here is going to determine who gets the job. I think this is all getting bent out of shape. I wish all the candidates luck and hope whoever gets the job is able to get it going.

Raiderfanone-you seem to know an awful lot about Davis, to hear everything "at the barber shop", and "second hand." You informed us that if we were to ask Davis about the UT postition he would "tell us the same", sounds like you have asked him personally. Also, just curious, are you a student or a teacher at Central, your asked early on if Derrick being at a bbgame meant he would be "our new coach" and then later stated that all the info was coming from "here at school" either way it just seems odd to me that you are apparently a Raider fan, I am assuming MTSU, which is where Davis' last "dream job" was at, and secondly you are such a proud supporter of him without knowing him personally. You almost seem like you are against Derrick getting this job, just curious to why?

  12. As you guys might of guessed I am a Davis supporter, with that being said I would like to know your reasoning as to why he wouldn't stick around long. Do you know him? Have you talked to him about why he wants this job? And another question, why doesn't he have the classroom experience, oh ya, maybe its because he wanted to try and be the best coach he could be and pursued a dream of being a college coach. I guess what a lot of people don't understand is that in order to get to the top of your profession you have to take steps, Davis has taken those steps, sure he has moved around and been at a lot of different places, but isn't that what we should want, someone who has been there and seen it rather than being at one place his whole career. I mean are we looking for someone who is going to give us the best chance of building a program or someone who is going just stay here and be happy for the rest of their lives. I'm not saying Gossett or Derrick wouldn't or couldn't do a good job, I'm just saying we should quit worrying about whether or not someone is going to stay or leave, keep them happy and they will stay. I'm not trying to cause confrontation just making my case. Oh ya, and as far as Jack Slayton,

I've been keeping an eye on this after I heard about it a couple weeks ago. The last postings got me hot enough to register. These are my thoughts and I don't really care if anyone who reads this agrees or not and I'm not going to argue with anybody, but I can tell you that many parents share my same feelings.

It is going to take a great deal of work to move this program forward. No knock on Coach Williams, but we're not where we need to be. As a parent, I know that things are really sloppy in the program right now. Things that should have been wrapped up at the end of the season haven't been and our facilities aren't being maintained to the highest standards. This is an example of the leadership that our current assistants have exhibited.

I want a coach who is a strong leader in the classroom and on the field. Davis doesn't have as much classroom experience as Derrick and Gossett. I'd like to compare resumes. Maybe the DPA would print them and let us all know what we're getting. Can anyone get copies?

As for outside of the program, I agree with Jack Slayton. The coach is going to have to be a very active figure in the community. It's impossible to build a program starting with freshmen. It has to start earlier. As a community member and parent I know that Derrick has a majority of community support. As mentioned in a few posts, Davis probably won't stick around long. A number of parents and players have been very vocal about not wanting Gossett. My kid doesn't want to play for him.

So I am one of those parents who will move my kid to another school if somebody within the program gets this job. As for the other two, I prefer Derrick but Davis could work too.

A lot of us are also getting very impatient. We do need to make a good decision, but we are losing valuable time to rebuild this program. Instead of moving forward, we are stalled out.

  13. So who has interviewed?

Just to make a few corrections to the previous post.

Derrick did coach one year at Lenoir City before going to Georgia with Wild where he and Davis both worked. Davis only stayed one year and left to coach at a junior college in Texas (Kilgore) for a couple of years. Derrick stayed with wild and is still there. Davis was a GA at Middle Tennessee and a student Mgr. at UTK.

  14. When do interviews start? Has anyone interviewed yet? When will we know something? and last of all what is the personalities of the candidates?

Here's another opinion in case you're interested in one:

Derrick/Davis/Gossett all played on the team that made the state championship game.

Derrick and Gossett played for division III Maryville college.

Davis was a student assistant at UTK.

For last 5 or so years, Derrick is coaching with Wild, head coach from state runnerup team at central, at a Georgia school that has a mediocre record, at best.

Davis has been at MTSU as an assistant coach/and at another college as a G.A. or coach, but most recently at NW Whitfield in a pretty good program as coordinator for a few years.

Gossett is only 3 years younger, but it's funny that two coaches with the same team have applied for the same position (Barnett/Gossett)... This means if one gets it, the other will be upset and may not respect the former.

Gossett is also responsible for the Utah offense this year as coordinator, that displayed dismal numbers and misdirection draws out of the shotgun on 80% of 3rd downs.

Barnett has been in the area for a long time... has little coaching experience at any level, maybe little league.

Georgia football is more competitive than SE TN football, so Central is better off with a regime change after a non-playoff year.

Why would you hire a coach with no head coaching experience from a losing program?

  15. Yah. I just want to know. There were alot of people talking about it at the game. Some guy even said that half of the county was sorry that they didn't hire one of those guys 2 yrs ago. Pretty funny stuff.

I haven't heard anything about all that, all I know is that I haven't heard of any interviews or anything, does anyone even know what the process is going to be?

  16. No, just a community member who's seen most of these guys play. I know their families and think highly of them. I know that Derrick played QB and DB in highschool and QB in college. I knew that Davis was at UT in college and didn't think he played ball but reading the bio I saw that he was a student assistant. Davis appears to have a strong defensive philosophy. Derrick has been an offensive and defensive co-ordinator and has done well on both but like you I would guess that offense is his strong point. I know they worked together in Georgia and they think highly of each other. I would think that they'd work together again if they had the chance.

Who knows what is going to happen. I didn't hear anything at the basketball game last night, as a matter of fact didn't even see the principle there. I just want to know when interviews are going to start or when Slayton is going to do an article on the applicants so we can find some stuff out.

  17. I am from Etowah and I do know all of the candidates that have been talked about here but I only know Barnett a little. Of the two that seem to have the best chances, Derrick is my first choice. He was an amazing player in high school and he did play in college. There's something to be said for knowing what it's like out there on the field. He's coached his heart out on both sides of the ball and wherever they put him that side gets stronger. You'll never meet a harder worker. He is true to his word and honest as the day is long. I think that this may be his dream job.

Davis is my second choice. He didn't actually play that much ball, but his coaching experience is a strong point. He's a great co-ordinator and other coaches say that he's great to work with. He puts alot of time and energy into his work. He is loyal and dedicated. My only drawback is the moving around so much. I don't think that he really knows what his dream job is.

Gossett and Barnett are both hard workers and good people. I would always lean towards more experience as a co-ordinator and most playing experience when looking for a head coach. On a sidenote, I hate to see a head coach who didn't play but that's a personal thing for me.

I think they're all great guys and I wish them all luck.

Charger, you make lots of good points. You seem to know quiet a bit about these guys, did you play at Central Also? I do agree this is probably Derrick's dream job from what I am hearing, but like I said I hear all kinds of stuff who knows, lol, I guess they just need to bring them in and interview and see who best fits the mold for Central. Your right, after checking around, Davis was more of a basketball guy when he was at Central. I also heard somewhere they have worked together in the past and are pretty good friends, what are the chances of getting them both here if one of them gets the job? Would they do that? To me that would be the best case scenerio. Didn't Derrick play QB? I would assume he is an offensive coach and I believe Davis is more of a Defensive coach, sounds like a good team to me, what do you think?
