  1. interesting to see that some fl schools are officially calling MB a sport. as i have said a thousand times... band is not a sport. good bands DO make athletes out of their studends but that doesnt make us sportsmen.

websters said this of an athlete

: a person who is trained or skilled in exercises, sports, or games requiring physical strength, agility, or stamina

we require physical strength ( horn angles and constant leg motion that may require more than 3 steps per second (tempo 180 for those who want to do the math)), we require agility (3 steps a second backwards on our toes while avoiding spinning rifles, flags, or sabres), and we most definately require stamina.

while i do stand on the side of band not being a sport as we generally view it as i found this definition from dictionary.com of the word 'sport' interesting

    1. an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.

according to that definition i would have to call it a sport. it requires skill and physical prowess and is quite competitive.

although.... *this is not meant to be offensive to those who hunt. my father and mother both do and i have much respect for the REAL hunter*...how is a man sitting in a tree shooting a deer with a rifle a sport? that requires no physical 'prowess' possibly a skill but is it not the common sterotype that a hunter be half drunk with his beerbelly hanging out of his camo jacket in a tree? that is quite unsportsman-like if you ask me.

i suppose i still hold that band is not a sport according to the stage on which we generally view it.

unlike sports though, band requires more than brawn to suceed. it requires a keen mind, incredible focus, grace, listening, LUNGS, balance, pagentry, and all the other things that go with the PERFORMANCE aspect of it that are far removed from sports.

  2. i have seen the quick fall of a program and the quick rebuild of it. if a grand directo leaves, there are big shoes to fill and it take a certain person with a certain chemistry with his/her students to make big things happen. there are a few things that are incredibly improtant to the rebuild/strenght of a band program

    - strong director who knows how to be a leader to the students

    - a director who lets the kids lead each other on the field and let them be the true teachers

    - a STRONG, devoted, driven, skilled, personable, and leaderly batch of seniors who really WANT to be the change

    - parents who give their time, talents, and, yes, money to make the program great (BDs CANNOT run a program, especially a marching program, by themselves)

    - administrators that back the band 110% that will allow them the special requts that the program requires

    - strong booster board that will write grant letters, organize fundraisers, and do all the administrative work that needs to be done

    - involvement from the high school in the middle schools that feed it. the younger kids need to see that high school band is a blast. their time is begged for by many different extra curriculars that they could commit to and they need to show the middle schoolers that they want them so badly to come and enjoy their band family with them.

that is only a small list of things that help a program. to truely grow a program there has to be the motivation from every front to get things to happen.

good luck to your schools band

  3. we were at COC. not our best performance (our best run was prelims at MCI) i missed the weather show cause i was stuck at the merch stand. poo! its my last COC ever but hopefully i will be back to watch in the future!

  4. humm yall are the best? how about DB winning COC last year. iv heard that this year is not a step up from last year either. good luck with your perses project or whatever your show is.

  5. wow. you guys are all off. how about some credit to oh i dunno page? big Mac? tullahoma?

your so single minded to think that you band is the best becuase you are in it!

  6. band put into schools to support the football team. if that was the real reason then its a shame. but Lord know that we are there for ourselves now. yeah we support the boys on the field but really friday nights are just a warm-up for the competition the next day. also we dont stop playing after the beginnign of november when football is over. we go through the rest of the year working on stuff to please us not worrying about who hears us. its all about us during concert season. its called mid-state, all-state, clinics, festivals, and oh yeah the best band trips ever!

  7. yeah she is good. so is her husband, Lalo. he's great.

but as for your statement about Oakland being the best in the state. thats def. wrong. the best in your COUNTY is LHS. no doubt.

and that goes for the middle TN region as well.

i meant back in the day when we had her....

  8. seems like im a minority here. im tired of classic rock shows. IMHO i want real music. powerful brass and flying WWs. crazy awesome and hard drill and something that makes you cry in the middle. seems like some bands are putting the music to the wayside and going for popular stuff insead of the hard *corps* stuff.
