  1. It was good to see Tennessee on ESPN for the second (or third) year in row!  I could tell the atmosphere at the Beech-Station Camp game was electric.  Hurd is a beast and doesn't have to carry the load this year for the Bucs.  It was extremely hot out there!  I don't think Hurd is out of shape but wonder if he has asthma.  It also looks like Station Camp will have a very good year.  They have some offensive weapons!

  2. Actually there are MORE of us who would like to see Maryville beat the snot out of teams like those you mentioned to shut up folks out of state who laugh at Tennessee now. It would also encourage some scouts from out of state to come here and look harder at our kids.

I agree. Maryville could beat some good out-of-state teams. Is it possible for them to play an out-of-state team every two years?

  3. Bands that go to competitions (usually out of town, at a high $$ expense plus lots of time and effort to prepare) need halftimes as a way to see how ready they are - not just with the show itself, but often with getting the equipment on and off the field within a certain time frame - just at they would at a big competition.

If a high school wants to do a kicking competition as a fundraiser, no problem - maybe they should be in between quarters or before the game. If it wasn't a fundraiser, then there was no reason to have it at all. I'm as big of a football fan as anybody who ever posts on this site, but I agree with the band parent on this. Besides, the visiting band is traditionally supposed to go on first...that means the home band is the one that should have had to sit it out.

I second this!! Very good post.

  4. I think Alabama does as well, although it's set up much differently. From what I understand, a ton of states use 6 classifications. A few of them use even more than that. Illinois has 8. New York has more than 10. I know population has a lot to do with it, but even still, while I agree it's more watered down than it used to be, 6 classes is not the outrageous number that a lot of people here make it out to be.

Very true. Thinking about Alabama, I think they have a lot of small schools.

Living in Illinois, it's a more populated state than Tennessee and lots of public high schools (mainly in Chicago) aren't eligible to compete in the state playoffs. Those schools compete for city championships. The private schools have multipliers applied to their school enrollments.

Missouri also has six classes for 11-man football. Each class has districts with anywhere from 3-6 teams. MO also has 8-man football.

  5. Can Kenwood beat Clarksville or NE in the next 2 weeks? If so, I project them to be the last in, beating out Lenoir City, Cocke Co., Bartlett, Anderson Co. and Boone at 4-6 with the tiebreaker: most wins by opponents. If Kenwood comes up short, Boone would be last in by virtue of 7 opponents with records of 50% or better.

All I know is this: there may be a lot of points scored in both games. After seeing Kenwood play against Springfield, they're a better team than what their record shows. I think they'll win one game, but I wouldn't be surprised if they win both.

  6. Dickson County defeated Clarksville tonight 52-45, turning next week's "Battle of the Barrel" into "Battle of the District". Where's the defense in this district? Seems like every game that doesn't involve us is a shootout.

On a side note, Patriot Freshmen defeated the Milan Bulldog Freshmen last night by a score of 54-38, giving them a finishing record of a perfect 7-0.

This game went into three overtimes. In fact, all of HC games have been blowouts. <_<

  7. I have seen all three of the Jackets games so far. I have been impressed with the improving and maturing of our QB. We lost the track meet last week to Northeast BUT we should get back on the winning track this week. We played better with fewer peanlties but still must turn the ball over less. This should be a entertaining game between two storied programs

I agree. Clarksville has had our number the last few meetings, especially at our place. This trend needs to be reversed. GO JACKETS!!! :thumb:

  8. Final score was 7-0 Whitehaven won. Whitehaven got a big win in East St. Louis against an Illinois powerhouse. Good defensive game by both teams. St. Rita had too many missed opportunities. Whitehaven's defense is fast/very athletic and will cause problems for a lot of teams this year.

  9. News Flash:

    -----------------------

4th qtr -- 10 minutes remaining (when I left the game):

    White Station 37 -- Ridgeway 14

    ---------------------------------------------------

I'll post some details before the weekend is out. For now, here's the long and short of it:

-- Ridgeway is NOWHERE near as good as they were last year, offensively or defensively!

-- White Station is much improved, but not very balanced offensively.

I left the game early because it was crystal clear that Ridgeway was NOT equipped to make a comeback (of course, I could turn out to be wrong. I'll have to check the final score, later).

Ridgeway received a lot of hype in the preason. I was not expecting this.

  10. Here are some of my favorites:

    • 1988 Page - SHS won 6-3 for their first playoff win in many moons (maybe ever). Game was played in the pouring rain. SHS lost 7-3 to David Lipscomb in the second round of the playoffs finishing 7-5. IMO, this season set the foundation for hard work, dedication, and success for the football program.

    • 1991 David Lipscomb (second round playoff game)- after suffering some closes to the Mustangs, the Yellow Jackets got that monkey off their back and overwhelmed David Lipscomb 34-7. SHS went on to finish 12-2 for the season (state semifinalist)

    • 1993 Humboldt (second round playoff game) - SHS won 27-7. That game was payback from the Vikings beating us on our home turf in the state quarterfinals and ending our perfect season.

    • 1993 White House (regular season) - WH won 17-14 in OT...but (see below)

    • 1993 White House (state semifinals) - PAYBACK!!! SHS won 12-6 in the pouring rain!!!

    • 1993 McMinn Central - STATE CHAMPS!!!

    • 1994 Humboldt - HHS was favored to win and had Kelcy Williams (best RB in 3A). SHS won 17-14 at Humboldt. SHS finished 10-4 with a disappointing loss at Portland (state semifinalist)
