  1. I think Grainger is very good. Naturally the one ingredient is the way they turn the game over to McBee at the last. I know Central had them beat but McBee hit a 3 on an inbound from the corner . Central had beat them in a game in Knoxville 30 plus points (Summer games) but they held McBee to just a few buckets. I think if Grainger beats Carter in their final match up they will clear out the doubters because the one sided loss a few weeks ago hurt. There is no doubt he has been the difference this season in a dozen games.

They are and he is. It's the same formula for success that the 1995-98 Rutledge girls used with his big sister and a big reason why the 1999-2002 Rutledge boys were so good when his big brother played. All the McBee kids have that "it" factor being the kids of a coach and just because they are extremely talented.

  2. Knox Central is leading their district (3AAA), and Cocke County is in 2nd place in 2AAA. Cherokee is very competitive also. Pretty good competition.

Well you and I would say they're pretty competitive, but folks in other parts of the state would probably have some negative crack on these teams. I say whenever you beat a larger school it's usually a good thing.

  3. Another big road win for the Grizz tonight. They're 4-0 against AAA schools this season...maybe not what some people would consider top-flight AAA schools but none too shabby anyway. Big district road games coming up starting with Claiborne on Friday. /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />

  4. That's a HUGE win. Defending the home floor against a team with good depth at guard like Union is crucial. As Rutledge/Grainger fans know we don't normally see our guys pull off a sweep of the Patriots so we'll have to wait two weeks and see if the trend is bucked or not. Regardless that's big-time good stuff. Now the boys go on the road for the rest of the month.

  5. That's a good attitude to have for the G-P kids. I would expect no less after losing to the same team twice in the regular season. They might very well beat Grainger in the tournament, but again it'll be on the Grizzlies' home floor and there's the whole thing that we still have the district's best player and a really good supporting cast.

As far as three officials, I see it as a waste of another $75-100 fee (or ever how much it is now to pay for the officials per the association)...especially in that association. I'm ready to see the district...including Union Co...work something out with the northeastern association. The Smoky Mountain has gotten far worse over the years...so bad they're rivalling the KnoxRidge for who's the worst in the area.

  6. One could ask the same question in regards to the officials allowing one of the Grainger assistants to continuously ride them during consecutive time outs. It was a close game that was poorly officiated but I don't think anyone needs to start down that road because there's no way someone from Grainger can have a bigger gripe than the GP fans. I can safely say that last night was the first time I've seen a player knocked unconscious and have the foul called on him. I just feel sorry for all the other district teams come tournament time because no ones going to get any calls playing against Grainger in that gym.

LOL! The same is true at other gyms in the district there eagles...just because your Highlanders lost don't go getting your drawers in a wad...

  7. Grainger has a very good team. Well balanced and play hard. Do they play any man to man defense? They will have to when they get into the sectionals to advance as Fulton, AE and the AA schools in other areas win on defense.

I think Grainger should win vs. upper East Tn. in the regionals. Just a tip---the home school or tournament is responsible for turning in game results by a certain time each day. They do not have a large staff anymore to do write ups but they do have an inside reporter for the games summaries.

My guess is that Grainger doesn't play a lot of man defense because they don't have the bodies to put in if they get in deep foul trouble, especially McBee. Taking a guy who averages 25 a night out of the game (and is good for 40-plus on a really good night) is a tall order. They've been working on a match-up zone for quite a while going back to the last few years at Rutledge...at least that's what I remember from discussions with the coaches.

As far as tips on turning in game results...I can speak to where some schools know that, but when they don't get published the next day it's pretty frustrating...and as far as less staff maybe they need to look into getting more stringers from outlying papers. They did it for Bearden when they played at Bristol and have done it for others. If the Sentinel is going to claim to be an all-encompassing publication for all these high schools in the PrepXtra umbrella then they need to get more people out covering things or just go back to being an all KIL and KFL paper.

  8. They ran into a buzzsaw every night it appears. Somerset is pretty good obviously and they had a barn-burner with Grainger in their final game in the tourney. Grainger's Skylar McBee is one of the best players in the state and dropped 30 on the Lions in addition to Justin Humphrey going for 20 inside and...well Union County doesn't lose at home that often plus they've got some pretty good guard play ordinarily.

That's a rough way to spend the week between Christmas and New Year's.

  9. Anyone have an account of the Grizzlies' game against Somerset? The Sentinel has no mention...naturally...and that's an awful lot of points on the board in a game not 30 minutes away from the Sentinel's front door. Then again, why would they care?

  10. should of known i was gonna get hammered about that comment thats my opinion on the situation and i know hes a good player ive played against him in leagues, but that was jus my opinion about him dang lol.

and i didnt mean to reply on your comment ballking it was jus at the bottom haha.

You got hammered about it because it's a silly comment. It might be your opinion, but it's very much a comment that doesn't go along with the type of player he has been since he started his high school career.

You might consider that next time before making such a comment.

  11. 65-28 hahahah wow!

to be honest skylar mcbee shoots every other time down the court i hope he could average as much as he does

after watching him in high school ball hes a good player but way way to hyped up, put him at a school thats good like an oak ridge and he wont be near the player he is at grangier cuz he wont be shooting the ball as much, dont get me wrong he would still be good, but not great.

Whatever dude. He plays in the summer with lots of D-I prospects and more than holds his own. Check out the roster for the Mid-State Ballerz South...also played in the Rocky Top League this summer along with current and former Vols and other college players both current and former.

    Judge not on one game...that makes you sound ignorant. /blink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="blink.gif" />

  12. A.W. Davis and Skylar McBee have been mentioned from the Rutledge/Grainger side of things, but one that hasn't been is Kip Combs. He played in the years just before the 3-point shot was instituted and was regularly knocking down 25-footers for Rutledge while averaging 24 per game over the course of the last two years he played.

A.W. was at one time the record holder for single game, season and career points...all before the 3-point line and before some other great shooters from all over the state got in on the act.

  13. Lee Humphrey -- Maryville

    Aaron Greene -- Sweetwater

    Terrence Oglesby -- Bradley Central

    Eric Coggins -- Cosby

    Michael Mott -- Anderson County

    Troy Yaden -- Oneida

    Milton Dean -- Austin East

I'd have a hard time with Aaron Greene on this list. He was a really good high school player, but he was a streaky shooter. I saw him in the state tournament a few times and he was more of a distributor than a shooter. He could shoot it don't get me wrong, but in comparison to everyone else listed he's a little out of place.

  14. I think the final was Claiborne over Grainger 69-60. Two evenly matched teams and Claiborne just simply played better tonight.

Losses are not the end of the world...having heard a report on the game Claiborne shot 40 free throws...at Grainger. The teams combined for 67 free throws. The refs need to let 'em play...that's ridiculous.

  15. i played for single A cosby so i got to see some dandies lol.

    top 3 are as follows

    Washburn

    Unaka(toughest place i ever played)

    Midway

Agreed on Washburn...very outdated. Bleachers on one side, players on the other. Not too many seats. A small school, but still not very well thought out when it was constructed. Just another reason why the folks on the north side of the mountain don't like the folks on the south side...especially now with the state of the art facility that's sitting along the highway.

Perhaps all the Washburn kids will go to Grainger one day...

  16. I agree with you whole heartedly, KevB. As you notice I said the same thing about McBee. Do you know anything about next years schedule for the Grizzlies? Greenvillefootball.com has the district schedule, but who will Grainger pick up for the 4 out of conference games? Since only one of the three (4A) schools in the conference are guaranteed a playoff spot, it will be important to finish 2nd or have a good overall record in order to make the playoffs. Any thoughts?

I've not talked to Briscoe in a few weeks so I really can't say what his thought process is for non-district games, but I would imagine it will be a combination of teams that the Grizz can handle and some toughies. That being said we'll have to wait and see.

And Greeneville will dominate the district...they're better than Carter ever has been and Carter won all but one game in four years against Region 1-3A opponents. Greeneville will make the collective district teams raise their level of play, but it's going to be a while before the rest of the district catches up.

  17. Brent Hubbs reported he was a candidate earlier this week. I know who he is but I did not know he was under consideration.

    KevB -

Why so anti-Kelly? You are the first person I have heard talk about him in a negative light.

He's an arrogant horse's rear...he's got baggage from previous stops in Michigan though nothing yet in Cincinnati...

Plus the only school where he's played with players he recruited was at Grand Valley. He's got Mark D'Antoni's players now and had some other goober's players at Central Mich.

Plus, I'm one of the only ones that use this site that lives in the Cincinnati metro...he'll be like a deer in the headlights in the SEC...and the Vols will really hit rock bottom.

Anyway, if Notre Dame whacks Charlie Weis after USC destroys the Irish expect Kelly to want to go there and tell Hamilton to let him go ahead because I'm telling you we don't want Brian Kelly.
