    Thank you.

So wpasi you were a boats , huh? Me, I hung out and loaded guns. Nice to know you're a fellow squid! So, look alive shipmate, I think I just heard General Quarters!  God Bless you brother and "turn two!"  As for the rest of you, you would have to be ex-Navy to understand this lingo!

  2. Thank you. I rarely post on coacht anymore, but as not only a veteran, but a Middle East war veteran, this means a lot. All veterans are my brothers and sisters and we are truly one large fraternity that share a connection that I think only veterans understand. It might sound silly, but I always think of the line from Rambo:First Blood-"We just want our country to love us as much as we loved it." God Bless all my fellow vets.

  3. Well I guess this is the same old tired topic of Wartburg football. Someone earlier mentioned the 2010 team that went to the state quarter finals. That seems like a long time ago now, sadly. Someone else also mentioned Larry Davis not wanting to come back last year. Well, I heard the exact opposite from a teacher and coach at Wartburg. The fact is, Davis did want to come back and the retiring principle obliged him. To me , Wartburg needs to send Davis packing at the end of this season and hire a quality coach. From what I hear, Wartburg had a good middle school team this year with several players that could develop into great high school players, if they don't go to Coalfield or somewhere else. I do feel that Wartburg will be back one day and like others on here mention, teams go in cycles. But until Larry Davis and his head shaking excuses are gone, Wartburg will remain on this downward spiral.

  4. Heck, in 2010 Wartburg had a good team. I believe the score was 12-6 that year. Great game!

Right you are, rt. They actually went to the state quarter finals that year and ran into a buzz saw in Boyd Buchannon that resembled an Alabama team! But yes Coalfield did beat them that year in a great game with a packed house. I really would like to see this rivalry competitive again. Even back in my day, it was always a heated, emotional affair, but I had friends that played for Coalfield, not to mention a relative or two.
  5. IF your profile is correct then we played together and I only  played coalfield twice in my 4 years because they was not on the schedule in 86 and 87 and if not what years did you play

Well, like I've stated on here before, I never said what the 86 means, but let's just say I played a few years before you and we did beat Coalfield 3 times. One year we were a decided underdog and still won. Yes, I remember the first years Wartburg moved up to 2a, I was probably in the military at that time. But I do remember the years you refer to. That was the Bill Winstead "dear in the headlights" time when the dogs were so overmatched, most games were a debacle and serious beat downs....kinda like now.
  6. Reading all of this is actually kind of amusing. Do l think Coalfield recruits? Who knows? Maybe. But I also believe that some of those kids want to play for a top notch team. Someone on here earlier said that Wartburg football has been a mess for 50 years? I can't agree, because I played on a Wartburg team that beat Coalfield three years in a row. Granted, that's been many years ago and Coalfield didn't have the program they do now. But I feel that the dogs are in another Larry Davis "slump" now that won't change until he's gone. I hear Wartburg has a good middle school program that's very well coached and I hear they have a kid that's a heck of a player and all this will bode well for the dogs future on the high school level(providing he doesn't go to Coalfield! Iol!) Anyway I look for Coalfield to roll over the dogs this week and yet again Larry Davis can be heard saying, " the effort wasn't there....I just don't understand...."

  7. coaches players and fans all. 62-20 game with 3 minutes left and guy starts coming down to the fence screaming and hollering chain gang is cheating, thought we were playing GB for a little bit. Players were using some very colorful language down there and coaches not doing a thing.

. That's a Larry Davis coached team for you. No discipline to be found. Such a sad situation........again!
  8. Trout was the Head Coach at Wartburg when his son played for one year not Oakdale. He then coached middle school ball at Warturg when his grandson played but he was an assistant middle school coach at Oakdale though as I seen him on the sidelines when my nephew played them.Look I wish the best for them and hope they can turn it around, heck I played there, once a bulldog always a bulldog but I cannot support that bunch thats out there right now. Hopefully changes can be made and they turn it around but I doubt it.

Until then Coalfield, Sunbright, and Oakdale will contiune putting them in the dirt.

Go Jackets, Ill stick by the score.

Actually, his son didn't play for him in the early 90's because I played with his son in the early and mid eighties at Wartburg. But I do agree with much of what you are saying. I heard from a pretty reliable source that a bunch of people applied for the head coaching job, but for whatever insane reason they brought back Larry Davis. As an alumni of Wartburg, this ticked me off. lm not necessarily close to the program, but I just can't stand Davis's style. His teams show no enthusiasm, he stands there with his hands behind his back and after countless beat downs, he says stuff like "we just quit....I just don't understand it." Sorry but that gets old after so long. As far as Ronnie goes, I've known him a long time and I must say he always treated me well as a teenager and I was friends with his son back in the day, but he's no football coach. What will happen with the program? Who knows? But I think everybody in the county should be proud of what Coalfield has accomplished on the football field. They have great coaches, hard working, committed players, and great community support. It would be nice to see Wartburg competitive again, but I'm not holding my breath.
  9. Can you name what all kids besides Ervin who are at coalfield that should be at wartburg?

. Nope, nary a one. But I do know that it's happened on occasion the past 10 years or so, because I went to school with their parents. By the way, I'm not close to the Wartburg program anymore, I just go by what I hear and read. Really I suppose I couldn't blame those kids for going to Coalfield, especially if they want to play for a top notch coaching staff and avoid the current misery at Wartburg. Like another poster said earlier, maybe Wartburg has become a boys basketball school.
  10. Yeah, I didn't think there were many around. Just blows my mind how low they have gotten over the past several years. They got blown out again last night by TP! I know Coalfield gets a lot of their athletes, but somebody with some back bone and pride needs to step up and turn that thing around. And keep the athletes in house. There's no reason why they shouldn't be a .500 team at the very least each year.

. Yeah, as a Wartburg alum and former player this whole situation sickens me. It's true Coalfield gets some of Wartburg's better athletes, especially in football. The guy coaching Wartburg now shouldn't be and from what I heard it's just one big messed up deal. It's funny too. Thirty years ago it would have been Cardinal sin for a Wartburg kid to go to Coalfield. But back then we beat Coalfield year in and year out. I hope the Burg works all this out, because it's hard to believe just 5 years ago the dogs were in the state quarter finals!
  11. This was my first game attending this year and I can tell you they looked way better than last year. There seems to be some major problems at WCHS, I was told Wartburg Football don't even have a football coach in the high school building? The administration has really destroyed this football program and it will take years to rebuild. From what I was told Davis took the Job because they begged him to take the job as they couldn't hire anyone not from the school district because they had no open jobs in the building. From what I was told tonight by a booster club member they are happy with this new coaching staff on rebuilding this program but it will take a long time and will be a hard one if your having to fight administration.

. If what you heard is true that's just sad! I think you're spot on about the administration and I hope for the kids' sake somebody fixes this soon. By the way, I love your screen name, when I played at Wartburg, you were hearing Madonna and Springsteen on the radio- what wonderful days that are long gone.
  12. After witnessing the game between Wartburg and Harriman tonight, I don't know whether to be sickened or appalled by the numerous personal fouls and general overall lack of discipline and inability to tackle by Wartburg. SURELY the coaching staff will address this next week. Again this is a typical Larry Davis team- fundamentally unsound and the class of backyard football. It's a shame too, because I believe Wartburg has some legitimate talent. Someone mentioned earlier that there's a coach in waiting. Good Lord, let's hope so!

  13. Should be the case. Wartburg seems to be very young this year, but to their credit does have some talent in those underclassmen. Give Coach Larry Davis a few years to get his system and with the talent, Wartburg should at least be decent.

    .

I think the jury's still out on Larry Davis. To be honest, I still don't understand this hire. I only hope this team shows more enthusiasm than they did 10 years ago under Davis. Something just tells me that Davis' time has come and gone.

  14. Larry Davis? I think the program will take steps backward with this hire. Someone mentioned discipline earlier? Well, what I vividly remember was the team Davis had back in 03. That team had more experience and talent than any Wartburg team in recent memory. The problem was that they were a bunch of primma donnas who from what I saw, talked back to Davis, slung their helmuts, and threw  tantrums when things didn't go their way. Also, the guy lacked any enthusiasm and this was reflected in his players. Most games during warm ups, it sounded like a funeral instead of a sporting event. Hey, what do I know, but I don't see any progress here at all.

  15. Thanks for those kind words SCW86. I have to say I have missed doing the sports too, but I'm back doing what I love to do. You can find me on www.morgancountymedia.com starting next week. I'm still doing my pre game show Fridays at 6:30 on WECO and I have plans to start a paper in the coming weeks. As for working lately, it has been 6 months and two days since I was fired at Morgan County News, but I have done a little umpiring, some writing work on the side and a couple of odds and ends jobs. The main thing is that my faith in God has gotten stronger during this time and I've had a lot of precious time with my two-year old daughter.

I'm glad to hear all is well, King B. I hope your new projects go well. I know what you mean about about hard times-been there done that, but you're right, these times will make you stronger. I'll be looking for your paper. Keep the faith.

  16. The Morgan County News said he was suspended, so go figure. BTW, did anybody see where the MCN corrected their "mistake" from last week? I thought the Wartburg team had Latin written under their picture! I don't know the new sports writer there, but I have to say I miss Langley doing the sports. Does anybody know where he's working now? He's good at what he does.

  17. I talked to one of Wartburg's coaches and he said that the dogs do have some good talent and experience, but they have very little depth. But I agree with others when they say that Coach Webb will have Rockwood ready to play and of course they will be tough at home. I honestly don't think this one will be a blow out, but I do think Rockwood will win.

  18. I think they will get each of the injured players back but it might not be until after both Rockwood and Hampton.  You are right about replacing a player with West's abilities, it going to be interesting to say the least.

Hey Kaz good to see you on here. I just bet those Indians will be fine this year. You know I sure miss some of my old Oneida buddies like Smash and Flair. Sure be good to hear from them again-just like old times. But anyway, maybe I can catch Oneida play this year-maybe when they play the Burg. Take it easy Kaz and tell everyone up North including all my distant relatives(Terry,Wests, Chitwoods) that I said hey.
