  1. Regarding Coach Jason Cook.... Knight time--- I do not know if you have ever actually played for Coach Cook but I can tell you with 100% assurance that you are dead wrong about Coach Cook. My son is a former football player and wrestler. I can tell you that yes he does yell. He yells alot... But Jason Cook shows those kids more love and actually instructs them a heck of alot more than most High School coaches do. If you were to actually watch... he will yell at a kid then coach him up then either slap him on his helmut or butt with tremendous encouragement. Coach Cook is my favorite coach at JPII and I am sorry that people such as yourself have the wrong opinion of him. Pay attention to more than the initial yelling. Having said that.... Coach Cook is the D- coordinator... he may coach linemen as well but I do not think so. The JPII defense started eight seniors for most of the year and they were reaaly weak for seven of the eleven games. Time for a scheme change.

Sorry Ferverfan your son must have been one of the Wrestling few that get the mans praise. Not like most who recieved mostly his rath. Like you my son is also a former player. And I can tell you the man is the presonification of a Jerk. Did you actually watch him on the sidelines he berated every one of his linemen and a few more with no signs of encouragement. This was the same man how told the boys that too much water during the heat of 2-a-days makes you weak. The same man that ran kids after summer practice because thier socks were to short.

Where the the team Excell on D-fense ..heck no. Why? Maybe that style of Coaching doesn't work in this enviroment. Not Maybe! It didnt work! But It sure seems that Coach Brothers and the Oline coach got through to the same kids.

As far as a coach goes he knows nothing about the game or the scheme he coaches. He is the Dline Coach . His Teaching of a Strike and press techneque in a 5-3 system is crazy. Most HS linemen don't have the Strength or Speed for this style. (It works well in the Pros or at UT) By the time you stand your man up Shed your man react to the ball the play is past you. And thats what happened all year long. Maybe he (and you) should read up on the K-State 5-3 attacking dfense. Its succes is base on Blitzs, Slants and Gap control.

For the programs sake I hope he is gone soon. Maybe Coach Jones can call up his old coach Dick LeBeau and get some Dfense pointers and take over next year.

  2. Just to confirm, yes Coffey is indeed at Centennial, I actually have a class with him. However, he cannot wrestle for the rest of 2006 because of the TSSAA transfer rules. Courtney is a great guy and I've known him and his family from both soccer and from Liberty Elementary. I can't imagine him doing something like that.

Well if you have a class with him ask him.

JPII does not ask a state Champion, especially their first and by the way a source of great pride to leave unless the violation was severe and the proof Iron Clad. He addmitted what he did and paid the price. End of story.

He will always be a part of the History of JPII athelitics.

We all Hope this Kid gets some help with his issues and goes on and makes a better life for himself.

  3. This story ran in Friday's Knoxville News Sentinel... what are everyone's comments on this?

    But,

the committee is alsomulling over whether

a team should have eight region games,

which would meanWebb would play each

team from Group B and C.

Well I disagree with the notion of one group with 5 teams and one group with 9 having to play 8 region games while the other plays 4. What kind of deal is that. Also the extra traveling on the groups from East Tenn would be crazy. Every other week they would be traveling over 2 hours to play a game. Stupid waste of gas & school resources I'd have to say.

So you might as well Pencil in

MBA, BA, McCallie and Baylor in the east

ECS, CB & MUS in the east

Leaving only one spot open in the east.

It would almost certianly mean the end of the Knox Webb - Knox Catholic game and the JPII- Goodpasture Game because each team will need every win just to have a shot a the fifth spot.

  4. A Good exciting game last night. 1 point decides the game, as a fan you cant ask for more than that even if you are on the loosing side. As far as feelings for the players I find it hard to believe that there could be a worse feeling than a season that ended on a penalty. Tate scores with 1 minute left on a long run and the play is call back for a holding call away from the play.

Congratulations to Knox-Webb on a well played Wing-T offense.

Well as always it wait till next year for the Knights. JPII needs to make One change on its coaching staff. Mainly the defensive line.

Jason Cook(JPII D-Line Coach) Must go. He is not a Teacher / Coach of the game he is a screamer. He does not build his players up but constantly tears them down... (3 Years of having a poor D-line should tell you that its time for a change.) He must have screamed at every player on the line last night. Even one player who had not seen much action this year. #67 got in the game for a few plays, He missed a tackle on one play and got screamed at so bad people in the stands told me you could hear it up by the press booth. This is his M.O. for how he coaches all year long. It doesnt appear to be getting through to his players, They basicly tune him out. Screaming and Fear will not motivate a player at the end of the season but a little teaching goes a long way. He might take a lesson from the Knox Webb coach who I saw teaching and encouraging his players after a JPII touchdown. I think it goes a bit farther than constantly screaming.

I look / HOPE for him to be gone next year.

Enough of my post game, post season clammer its time to congratulate Webb and wait till next year. Good Luck Webb. Hope they smash ECS and take the title.

  5. Where is he zoned for? I'm sure is this was a one time mistake most programs would like to see him on the mat. Come on over and where the black and gold of the Commandos :thumb:

I dont think this was a one time mistake. JPII does not take expelling a student lightly. The word is that this was his second BIG mistake. I dont I really dont get it. Isnt his father a Cop? What a Waste, to have all that potential and throw it away for a cell phone.

I thought like several other posts that he would not be eligible the rest of this year because of the 20 day rule. That states you must be enrolled for 20 days of a prior semester before you can compete in a current semester for a school if you are a local transfer. Maybe he got a TSSAA pass.

So is he at Brentwood or Independence?

  6. Predictions? Webb carries lots of momentum into the playoffs after defeating ECS 36-13 in the last game of the regular season. Can Webb stop not only golden but now his little brother. Golden's little brother was one of the biggest reasons they won the regular season contest. These two schools have met 5 times in the past 3 years and this will be the 6th. Webb holds the advantage 3-2 and 4-2 if you count PJP first year of football.

    JPII 27 - KW 21

JPII has a much more balanced attack now with the addition of Wesley Tate in the backfield. They can double Golden all they want too but the DB's will have to have their eyes in the backfield to stop the run up the middle. Wesley Tate is a much better between the tackles runner than Golden. He doesn't hesitate and hits the hole hard. He will be a top notch player next year.

  7. From What I can tell the playoffs for DivII AA are set. Only question is when the first games will be played.

    Games as Follows

ECS Vs Knox Webb @ ECS

    JPII Vs Harding Acad. @JPII

Will the First Games be scheduled for Nov 3rd or with only 4 teams will the first games be on the 10th?

  8. B. I don't know anything about the Jordan kid's dad, but I do know about the Caffee kid's. His dad quit his job in Texas and moved to the area without a job and did not have one for several months. I am assuming that he is now employed. I know that Caffee came to one of Flatt's football camps a few years back. It has been said, in Aledo, that Caffee wanted his son to go to a school that threw the ball more then his Texas team. Now, does anyone else find this funny?

Well Quiting your job doesnt get you a free pass to BA. If they want you! they wil get you! If you have ever read the TSSAA recruiting rules they are full of holes. You must go throught the same finiacial aide process as a college admission and submit the finding to the TSSAA for review. OK but the regs also say you can borrow the tuition. (it doesnt say from whom) Now BA has rasied 9 million dollars this year from supporters. I know they have had 3 1 million dollar contributions. Well if I could Give a million, I know I could employ this kids father (maybe just part time) and say give him a bonus large enough to pay off $6500 in tuition. Prefectly legal within the rules. Too many easy ways to skin the recruiting cat.

I know for a Fact that this man shopped his son to a few of the local privates schools. I heard this kid was comming back in June. But following the TSSAA rules thats OK as long as the Student wasnt involved.

    The TSSAA is a JOKE!

    Back to the Game;

I give FR a 26% chance of pulling the upset. They will have to play the game of the year. Get pressure on the BA QB most every play and take advantage of every BA miatake.

I hate BA FR in the upset

    FR 16 BA 12

  9. I always thought the rule on a punt was that if it touched a player on the recieving team it was a live ball, but could not be advanced from the spot of recovery.

    Anyone Know the exact rule?

    Thanks

  10. Harding plays @ ECS thurs. night . ECS has a huge advantage b/c they had an off week last week and have at least eight days to prepare for the game. Harding has three days to prepare. I dont know if that is enough time for Harding to prepare for any chance of an upset. Any thoughts?

AS Someone who has seen both teams, I would have to say ECS in a romp. Harding will have no way to stop the ECS offense. They will have to put 7 men in the gaps and blitz like crazy just to get the ECS quaterback rilled. Then he still probably would complete 50% of his passes. The Kid is just plain GOOD! Then with Harding only having 3 days prep...Doesnt look good.

  11. First of all, Harding got the bad side of several bad calls. The pass that was originally called a fumble on Hardings final drive in regulation was incomplete, and even if it was a catch, the ground caused the fumble. Also, on Golden Tate's interception in OT, he did not catch the ball. He even admitted after the game that he did not catch it. The game was at Harding, but Harding still could not get a call. Both teams still played well, but I would like to see a game between these two good teams again. Golden Tate vs Marlon Brown is a great battle.

Several Bad Calls? What game where you watching. There was only 2 penalties called against Harding One for delay and one for interference. The player that fumbled never hit the ground before the ball was out and Golden never Addmitted he didnt catch the ball. You will see JPII again but this time it will be at JPII's field. Make the 3.5 hour drive and bring your video camera. I have the game on tape and I Know what I saw.

  12. Congrats JPII on a great win. If you can win out there is a home playoff game in the cards.

    Could Be.

Just to add a Recap of last nights game. Before we talk Playoffs.

It was a kind of a wierd game. Both teams put up 14 points before the 6 minute mark of the first quarter. Both teams then played some better defense and traded scores in the 3rd. JPII went up 28-21 on a 99 yard drive mostly running the ball with a couple key 3rd and 4th down conversions.

Harding then got the ball back on thier 19 with about 2 min left in the 4th quarter. The Second play of their drive a Harding recieve caught a ball, ran for 2 yards and fumbled it. JPII recovered. One Ref signaled JPII ball.. pretty much game over but then the dreaded Ref Conference and it was ruled an incomplete pass. (Harding Still has Life)

Hadring then moved the ball out to their 45 and had a 4th and 15 with less than a minute to go. They pulled out some kind of modified Fumble-ruseky play where a kid who couldn't be 5' tall takes the ball off the ground and goes 14.9 yards behind the entire left side of the Harding line, gets tackled, fumbled and the ball goes out right past the marker. (Still harding has life)

After a good run Harding has the ball on the JPII 20 with about 30 some seconds left, Their QB throws the best pass of his night a bullet across the middle for a TD and with the PAT ties the Game. With 27 seconds left JPII moves the ball down the field and gets to the Harding 40 with 7.9 seconds left JPII throws a long one and the ball is caught and the JPII reciever got knocked out at the 1 yard line as time expires. OT Comming.

The second play of OT Harding throws a Jump ball fade route to the corner. Tate was Defending and both players are about 9 or 10 feet up and both had the ball in the air but as they came down Golden managed to strip the ball. Harding Stopped! (Play of the Game) JPII's shot at OT. The next play it was all over. Golden takes the ball to the right gets the corner and races into the end zone for the win.

As a Football fan it was a good game to watch as a JPII fan the roller coaster turns were difficult to handle. The JPII D-fense did struggle at times but I did see a team that didn't let the same mistakes happen twice. I think They are starting to play a bit smarter, but still have to work on wrapping up and containment.

On to the possible Playoff picture

JPII has the following game left.

BGA Who is out of the Playoffs and has not won a game. (Regional Game)

Franklin Co. Who are 2-4 and need 3 of 4 to get in the post season (This one could be a Squeaker for JPII, Franklin Co. Home Comming)

St. Benedicts who needs 2 of 3 to get in.. Regional Game (JPII could be their final shot or it might mean nothing)

JPII should take these games, and if Knox-Webb wins one more the Post season would look something like.

ECS Vs Knox-Webb at ECS....A six hour drive to play a game..Wow, That has got to wear on a team. If this is how the playoffs pan out ECS will have crossed the state to play Webb the week before in the final season game and then Webb will drive back across the state to play ECS in a playoff.

JPII Vs Harding at JPII ...A rematch of last nights game Hopefully we will get some Middle Tennessee Refs.

Should JPII loose 2 of 3 and Webb and or Benedicts win out it would it would change the entire picture.

If Benedicts does get in it will add a game to the first week Webb vs Benedicts, but were Webb & Benedicts play again. Nashville or Knoxville?

  13. Wow fallen to page three. Time to bump it up. Where are all the JPII fans or even the Harding fans.

From what I have learned Harding is Staying in DII-A next year so I guess that is why they are playing the smaller schools like Tipton.

Also I have learned that Harding has opened up their offense from last year and spreading it out and running a "Run & Shoot". This could be a problem for the JPII d-fense. From what I have seen the d-backs for JPII have a tendency to get caught looking in the back field because of the Line and Backers having a ard time with the run.

If JPII can play solid D then they will come out on top.

    Any Harding Fans Out there?

  14. I say JPII wins by 10 34-24.

I look over Hardings schedule and they have played only small schools DIV-2A and DIV1-AA and just beat Knoxville Webb. Are you helping your team or hurting them by playing a soft opening schedule? I understand this may give your team confidence but what is going to happen when they play a good team like ECS.

Is Harding staying in Div2-A next year? Anybody seen Harding Play?

  15. I was at the MBA v. JPII football game last night and, I must say, that is the worst MBA team I have ever seen take the field. Of course, I am fully aware of the well-documented injuries that have decimated the Big Red, but that does little to explain the team’s overall lack of skill, speed, and strength. Is MBA’s talent pool so shallow that even its amazing coaching staff cannot field a team capable of competing with a JPII team that is, at best, a marginal DII power? If not, then MBA is in serious trouble during the rest of the season because it has to play Ryan (home), BA (away), McCallie (away), and Baylor (home) – four teams far superior to JPII.

From the opposite side of the field it looked like MBA really has simplified the game plan to acommidate the lack of experience they had. They ran 3 plays over and over and over they moved the ball well but made the critical mistakes of a young team. They also assisted JPII by running the no huddle. This didnt allow JPII to shift their D-line around. Playing in a set D-fense seemed to settle the JPII line down. Once I acutally saw 2 JPII players run into each other trying to swap sides on D-fense it was almost funny.

MBA looks to me as a team ready to break out. Looks like they have worked hard on fixing the D-fnse and just need someone to step up and carry the Offense. Dont be surprised to see them make the playoffs.

  16. I believe you have been around long enough to know that being a senior doesn't mean a thing. Its how skilled you are. I completedly agree with you, they don't attack or slant. If the play on defense is more than five or six yards away from many of the JPII players, they act as if they are watching a game on television. They simply stand and watch many times. You can blame the coach if you want to, but maybe some of the players are to blame, its hard to coach heart. And I believe they graduated some players last year that were the heart and soul of the team, just my opinion. But I believe they will beat MBA. ;)

OK You have a good point. You cant coach heart , drive and want-to into a player. And the coach does need to light a fire under a few Butts. But you can put those same players into a system that develops confidence it. Dfense is all about scheming your play calls to what the other teams tendencies are. The vanilla read and react doesn’t give your players a chance to cover up a mistake. Take the pressure off the players and slant them, blitz them, put them in the correct position by calling coverages that take advantages of the other teams tendencies on down and distance that you watched on film or got from scouts. And when your calls are wrong, which you will be every now & then, you hope a player makes a great play or you pat them on the back and tell them “My Bad” We’ll get’m next time.

  17. I am going to pick JPII. Maybe 21-13. At the same time one of the MBA running backs may set a school record for rushing yards in the game. JPII's defense is not doing very well. I don't think it is do to coaching, but lack of key personnel. Tate is going to score period.

    LACK OF KEY PERSONNEL?

    What exactly does that mean?

They have 3 SR. down line men. A Sr & JR playing DE, 2SR's playing line backer, the rest have experience in this system.

Its the way the system is being used. The 5-2 is an attacking / slanting Dfense. They dont attack or slant. Whos fault is that? Maybe the coaches?

  18. I agree MBA has had some great seasons and Rutledge is a great coach and so is Brothers, there is no reason to nor do I think anyone has mentioned replacing either of them. You must also understand that most all HS football teams have unrealistic expectations. Dont all football fans deep down, live by the Creed "Winning isnt everything its the only thing"

What I want to know is who can turn it around for this game?

Rutledge has the experience of the old Pro, and he did have some depth until all the injuries. Brothers has the Passion / Frustration of building a program and has most of the same players he had last year.

Which Coach has the ability to take their sows ear defense and make it into the silk purse and make the final push into the PLAYOFFS? Or do we end up with a JV Basketball Game score JPII 56--MBA 54.

  19. OK football fans after JPII's bashing and MBA's whoopin by West Tennessee's ECS and CB. Which of these teams will bounce back to take this game?

Appearently both teams have lost their Defenses and both must have coaches that are to hard headed to make adjustments to their defensive schemes.

I must say JPII has the easiest remaining schedule and needs three wins to get in the playoffs while MBA is heading into the most difficult part of their schedule with their last 5 games having to face JPII, Father Ryan, BA, Mcallie and Baylor.

What program / Coaching staff has what it takes to turn it around?

I say JPII takes a close one in Double overtime 28-27.

  20. JP2 needs to be consistent on defense and unless they are they lose this game narrowly just like Goodpasture.

Their coach should have these issues resolved and don't be surprised to see Golden in more on defense because of his speed. Passing will probably be the primary offensive plan; however, ECS's QB ran for 60+ yards against MUS as did another ECS player.

JP2 play consistent and you win, 21-17.

Wow someone who has actually watched JPII this year. Thanks for the post with some substance hsfbfan... Inconsistent is the word on this teams defense this year. The Offense has kept them in both of their losses. JPII has the Speed and strength to match up but I think the D-Coaching is lacking. Brothers is a great offensive coach. But the D-assistant coach (Brothers is also the Head D-coach) keeps yelling at his linemen to "Strike & Press" I guess to keep the O-line off the smaller JPII linebackers. But the 5-2 "Bandit" (Simular to the K-State D-fense) scheme JPII plays from what I recall is supposed to be a Attacking / Slanting D-fense that relies on the Line to disrupt the backfield If they continue to tie up their D-linemen ECS will win by a dozen. If they turn them loose and bring the linebackers, disrupt the pass and play the 5-2 as it was designed, I think JPII can pull out a close one. JPII 27-24

Thanks again for the good post. As you can tell I am Biased towards the Knights but love football talk with substance.
