new division 2

Division 2 is going to look completely different next year. who do you think will win state?

 

D2 small-ST. George's, Davidson Academy, Harding Academy, FACS, SBEC, Rossville, Tipton Rosemark, Bishop Byrne

 

D2 Large- Battle Ground Academy, ECS, Ensworth, Knox Webb, Pope John Paul 2, St. Benedict, CBHS, MUS, Baylor, Brentwood, Briarcrest, MBA, Father Ryan, McCallie

in d2 small, id have to go with coach netherland and st. george's. they had a decent team last year as far as i could tell, and should be returning most, if not all (not sure theyve had a senior class yet), of their starters.

 

in d2 large, im gonna have to go with one of the traditional super 7 teams (Christian Bros., MUS, Brentwood Acad., Montgomery Bell, McCallie, Baylor, or Father Ryan). i cant see any of the "imported" teams (ecs, briarcrest, st. benedict, jpii, ensworth, or whoever else moved up) being able to match up week in and week out with the players those seven teams bring to the table. its a different breed of football and anyone who has played at those schools can tell you....or you can just ask briarcrest. (state champs to like a 3-7 record the next year when they moved into d-2aaa)

 

my pick?...im not willing to venture too far out on that branch this early in the summer.

DII-Large looks to be relatively wide open on paper, and with all the coaching changes and graduation of some great players, it could be anyone's title to win (with a few exceptions of course). The champion of the old Super 7 has always had great QB play, and Baylor returns the best QB in the league in Tyler Massey. Yes, I know Baylor is the only original member of the league not to have made the title game, and they lost a great RB in Kevin Cooper, but a great QB, and particularly one that can run well like Massey, can take a team a long way.

 

Of the new members, I think the "E" schools will represent well. ECS has always been pretty strong at DII-AA, and even picked off MUS and CBHS last year, but I'm not sure they can go all the way (not sure about '07 returnees either). Ensworth has a great coach and a game-changer in T. Jefferson. I'm not sure about EHS's depth, but their first teams should be pretty strong for a new school.

 

Too early for me to predict as well, but the league should be solid across the board again in '07.

 

In DII-Small, I would take St. George's, too. Harding Academy could thrive in this league as well.

ahh very true. i had forgotten about massey's departure from mus to baylor. he is a darn good quarterback...has been for a long time.

somebody else who could make some noise as far d2 qb's are concerned, and in my opinion is a sleeper because no one knows about him, is michael blanchard. he transferred to christian brothers from briarcrest last year, and per the tssaa transfer rules, was ineligible last season. talk about speed, hes got it. massey can move pretty well, but blanchard can flat out fly....christian brothers should have a pretty decent running game as well this year with the return of eric watson and gilbert johnson. im hoping locastro will run a little more out of the "i" this season and let the fullback go "toe-to-toe" with the likes of good high school players such as antonio harper of melrose, deandre jones of mus and bartholomew (sp?) of mba.

I'm very curious to see how BA does this coming season. Former McCallie coach Ralph Potter has taken over for the legendary Carlton Flatt and will begin a new era of BA football. I know that BA graduated an extremely talented senior class (something like 7 players are playing div. 1 or 1aa football). But they return one of the top players in the Southeast (possibly the country) in running back Chris Jordan, who missed the 2nd half of the 06 season. Any thoughts on BA in 07?
