2019 East Tennessee Classic - March 21-23 - Winged Deer Park - Johnson City

Science Hill High School and Johnson City Parks and Recreation would like to invite you to play in the 2019 East Tennessee Classic on March 21-23 at Winged Deer Park in Johnson City.  Entry fee is $300 and includes 5 games varsity (7 innings or 90 minutes) and 3 games JV (5 innings or 75 minutes).  Softballs provided, trophies for each division champion, trophies for an all-tournament team and a coaches hospitality room. Extra games will be offered at no cost on Thursday for those that are interested.  We will have openings for 16 varsity teams and 6 JV teams.  

The East Tennessee Classic will also be presenting each division winner a team scholarship award to be used at the discretion of the head coach.  The Gold Division winner will be awarded a $500 team scholarship, the Silver Division winner will be awarded a $400 team scholarship, the Bronze Division will be awarded a $300 team scholarship, and the White Division will be awarded a $200 team scholarship.  (All team scholarship awards are contingent on a full 16 team field and completion of the tournament.)

Congratulations to Daniel Boone (Gold), Farragut (Silver), Sullivan South (Bronze), Unaka (White) and Farragut (JV) for coming out on top in the 2019 East Tennessee Classic. 

Also, congratulations to Brylee Mesusan (Boone), Kara Weems (Crockett), Lakyn Moore (Farragut), Morgan Riffle (D-B), Nicole Troutman (South), Madison Pierce (Unaka), Abigail Taylor (Science Hill), Ali Chandler (Volunteer), Alle Griffith (Unicoi County) and Kenzie Birchfield (Cloudland) for being selected All-Tournament.

    • Coalfield definitely isn't the same team they've had the past few years. They are still the favorites to make it out of their region because of their pitching. They have 1 arm that sits low to mid 80s and 2 other arms that are mid to high 70s with good off speed stuff. If you can avoid their top 3 bats in their lineup then you have a shot to beat them. Their 4-9 hitters are average at best. Wartburg's ace was able to shut them down last week in the game Wartburg won 4-2. 
    • It is the longest season. Plus, 30 games a year. No Christmas break. I would say basketball is the most time consuming. 
    • No movement on Chester? South Gibson? Gibson County?
    • Winfree's senior year was the season she needed to secure more college interest. That opportunity was taken away from her. A lot of false assumptions can be made about what happened and what the options are. Unfortunately, the former coach and administration did not allow Winfree to have due process. A lawsuit was filed for a reason, and it will run its course by people who conduct discovery and take depositions. Unless the parties settle out of court, a lot of the pertinent issues will come to the public surface. The real questions are why was Winfree dismissed from the team, and why the administration backed a coach whom they did not rehire.
    • What is the hold up here? I have not heard anything in weeks. Are they waiting for the right person or is something else going on?
