So, let me get this straight - Upperman has most of its team returning from last season's semifinal run, correct? They have gotten two or three players who have transferred in from Cookeville, correct? So, now, they have this "super team" that won't be challenged during the regular season - that's what we're saying, correct?
This is really what area people have been saying has been taking place for a while now. AAU connections and the lack of appeal of playing at Cookeville bring players to Upperman. I would say that used to happen more on the girls side (transfers coming in to Upperman, which seems to have lessened recently since the Cookeville program has experienced more consistent success over the past few years under Gillies ... no offense intended to Odom, who was a solid coach).
I wish everyone the best. Let's keep in mind that one injury - and I hope that nobody suffers an injury - can derail it all.
If Alcoa lands a few transfers of its own and derails the UHS run to a state title, I wonder how the Bee supporters will feel about things come next March. I mentioned something at one point about Upperman being the beneficiary of transfers over the years, and it was met with a response of preposterousness at that notion. Transfers are still transfers even if they come in before high school. There's nothing illegal about that in and of itself.
Good for Upperman though. When you win, people want to be a part of it. They keep winning. People keep coming. The AAU world is "interesting" to say the least.
