Meigs County football already had a prominent defense the last two years, with head coach Nathan Simbeck the de facto defensive coordinator. The Tiger starting defense allowed 8.9 points per game last season overall.
In what should only be even scarier for opposing offenses, the third year Tiger coach Simbeck went out and grabbed a six-time state champion to call his defense now.
Earlier in the offseason, Meigs named Jeramey Anderson, most recently at Boyd-Buchanan, its new defensive coordinator. Anderson brings legitimate pedigree to Decatur with six state championships to his name and hundreds of wins at Riverdale, Oakland and Boyd Buchanan.
"We got a lot better when Coach Anderson came on," Simbeck said. "He's a lot better than me (coaching defense). He's an exceptional coach, and I'm really looking forward to seeing what we can do on defense. We've tried to do what he does on defense the last two years, but I don't have the capacity he has. I'm looking forward to seeing him take it to another level, like he's always done."
"We are really, really excited about this addition. His pedigree speaks for itself, and we are very fortunate to have him at Meigs. He is going to make us a lot better."
Anderson was on staff for Class 5A state championships in 2001 and 2004 at Riverdale under legendary coach Gary Rankin. In 2002 and 2003, Riverdale finished runner-up.
At Oakland, Anderson was a part of the coaching staff for four state championship teams, spanning over a decade.
Now, Anderson goes from large schools with huge trophy cases to Meigs, who looks to grab a trophy with high expectations this season in 2026.
"It starts with Coach Simbeck. He's one of my best friends, and I love him. I've got a lot of trust with him," said Anderson. "We also like the area. I've got young kids; I've got older kids. It is a good fit for our family. On the field, Meigs has always been talented and physical. Nathan has done a great job -- I'd watch film of their games when we were off and you could tell how good they've been. It makes it really easy to want to come and coach this group -- a lot of great kids and a lot of great athletes. They are coachable and I'm really excited to get to work with them."
On the field, Anderson is known to coach his players hard, which has only brought even more success out of the young men he's led.
"I do coach hard. Expectations are obviously with this team and this program, and I want to live up to those," Anderson said. "I have high expectations myself. I have seen what success looks like, I know the work that it takes and so I'm going to push these kids to do that."
"It's going to be a learning curve for things that I do and my methods, but I want to be fast and physical on defense. I want to be multiple, and I want to be aggressive. We're going to make a lot of big plays, and we're going to give up some big plays with our aggressiveness, which all comes with the territory. It's always been my philosophy to force teams into mistakes and into things they don't like."
Anderson coached under Rankin at Riverdale before joining the 16-time state champion as his defensive coordinator at Boyd-Buchanan from 2022-2025/ Simbeck and Anderson coached there in Chattanooga together as the second-in command under Rankin on each side. Simbeck was the offensive coordinator in 2022 and 2023, and Anderson the aforementioned DC.
At Boyd with Anderson calling the defense, the Buccaneers achieved an astonishing 43-7 record over the four years, reaching the Division II-AA Championship Game in 2023 (with Simbeck) and the DII-AA semifinal in 2024 and 2025.
In all but Anderson's first year, 2022, Boyd was put out by the eventual state champion.
The six time state champion will look to bring home number seven with the Tigers in 2026.
