  1. actually no. The match woth Colbert was far closer than the score lets on. Colbert was down by 2 going into the 3rd. Steiner takes bottom and Colbert rode him for the majority of it but couldnt turn him so we cut with 30 seconds left. Steiner ended up getting a takedown at the end of the peroid to win by 5, but those last 3 points could have been a different story. Not taking anything away from Steiner. I love watchin that guy. He's a beast and has had that intensity since 9th grade. I hope he medals at state because he has the talent to do so.
  2. Thomas Holman of McGavock is not wrestling this year.
  3. Outstanding Wrestler was the 160 from Oxford. Best match was 215 between Oxford and EJ Smith of Hunters Lane. The bug fuss was after the Oxford wrestler got an escape and took a 1 point lead with 30 or so seconds. With about 3 seconds left, the Oxford guy was standing straight up with his arms raised in victory so EJ charged for a double leg as time ran out. He let up, but their momentum forced Oxford to go flying off the mat and land on his back and head on the gym floor with a flood. The "controversy" was that after that, every single Oxford coach, wrestler, and supported stormed the mat and circled arond him, screaming and yelling, a few started walking towards EJ, but they were held back. The uniformed police officer there was telling everyboy to get back, Mr. Fiscus was on the microphone telling people to remain in the stands and that it was unintentional, but they didnt seem to listen or care. Our atletic train told me later that she couldnt get to the guy to attend to him and see if he was injured or not because all of the Osford contingent wouldnt move out of the way. That's the whole point of having an athletic trainer on site! The guy could have had a concussion. It just seemed like a lack of class on their part.
  4. McGavock has a VERY young team this year, but also very talented and full of potential. Give us a few years and Arab may not accept our invitation so readily each year! Congrats to the Alabama schools for their success, and gotta give respect to Region 7 for a strong showing.
  5. I think it's a good thing that it's been increased because it's more inviting to alot of football players who probably play at 300lbs and think a 25 pound cut is too much. It helps get more guys from football to wrestling, which will in turn get them into better shape. besides, there's not much of a difference. I've wrestled guys who weighed 275 when I myself weighed 210. 10 more pounds on them wasn't gonna make a difference.
  6. Does Soddy still have the same heavyweight, Zimmerman? I thought he was a senior last year but it seems like I saw his name in the rankings. He's pretty good.
  7. yeah, mon-wed 8 to around 10:30. Alot of our guys were out of town for the holiday though.
  8. If you're in middle TN, it'd be Wade Bartlet at Franklin High School. He's their sports physician or whatever.
  9. Kyle Chandler. He's a beast and is only a sophmore. I think he was only 1 match away from placing in Chatt. last year at state. He beat one of my boys in the finals this saturday. I'm expecting big things from him this year.
  10. This is atleast the 10th year it's been held. It use to float around Nashville schools, but McGavock has hosted it the past 7 or 8 years. It's open to any freshmen, no 8th graders. One day, double elimination. The middle TN referees are in charger of it so you'd have to contact them. Tim Able and P.A. Bowler are usually the main guys if anybody here has their contact info.
  11. McGavock hosts the Fred Rigsby freshman grandchampionship. It's in January, but I can't remember the exact date. A one day, double elimination tournament held on a saturday. Freshmen only. I think it's the weekend after the Brentwood tournament. I'll post the date later when I get home.
  12. McGavock will have a crew there. Most of them are going to certify, but there's a bunch who are also going to wrestle.
  13. No. It's a simple concept that, if I lose 7 or 8 pounds and go from 152 to 145, I will have an advantage over those that are natural 145s. Some guys feel that they need that slight size and strength advantage. It's all part of the sport. It's all over MMA. Pretty much everybody who fights at 185 walks around at close to 200lbs, for axample.
  14. I think it's the wrestle backs that prevent them from going to double elim. Those would take forever with brackets that big. An easy solution is to move D2 to another venue, or hold it the week before or something. That would keep McKenzie from overflowing with people on friday, and D1 could do all of their wrestlebacks that day instead of taking a 7 hour break. But if that happened, all the D2 schools would start complaining. It makes sense to me though to do it that way as D2 could probably complete their entire tournament in 1 day if they wanted to. Their brackets are so shallow sometimes that a finalist only has to win 2 matches to get there.
  15. The only knowledge I have of this whole situation is from reading these boards, but it could be a hardship case where it is dealt with on an individual basis between the student and his family and with the school board. If that is the case, which I don't know if it is or not I'm just speculating, but if that's it, then it's a personal matter and not really anybodies buisness except the student himself. There's too many people on here trying to cast this young man in a negative shadow when nobody here knows the entire story. I don't think Coach Abner is the type of person who would go to all this trouble to get HLs season forfeited. He's a stand up guy from what I can tell. And there's nothing for Glencliff to gain from the situation if HL did have to forfeit. Let the people involved in this clear it up on their own without a bunch of internet warriors trying to create drama.
  16. How big has Lettner gotten? I always thought he looked kinda thick at 215 with some weight to lose. He would be ripped at 197.
  17. I don't have a problem with girls wanting to wrestle, as long as they dont expect special treatment because they're a girl. Expect to get beat up and hazed alot. And if you can't handle that without making a big fuss, then it probably isn't the sport for you. I've had the expirience of having a girl on my team when I was in school, and also having a girl on the team with me as a part of the coaching staff. I've seen where there can be problems with parents not wanting their sons to wrestle a girl, and also with the girls parents getting all bent out of shape when they see their daughter get whooped on the mat. The problem I do have is when a girl wants to wrestle just to make a statement, and doesnt really care to make it in the sport. I havent had any expirence with this situation personally, but do know that it has been an issue before. As an answer to that, I think boys should be allowed to join the volleyball team, as there isn't a boys volleyball program in high school around here. I'm sure if a guy did try to join a team, every last parent affiliated with the volleyball program would raise heck in disagreement. That's the problem I have. This should be a 2 way street.
  18. A 10th grader who's 3rd string. Check your numbers again.
  19. What 'rediculess' fees are you talking about? A high school sports physical is free if you go on the dates they are offered and the hydration test is 10 bucks at the most. What else is there? You buy your shoes and practice gear, that's about it.
  20. nununu knows exactly what he's talkin about. He's not some trash talker wanting to start an internet argument.
  21. California also has what, around 800 programs? Winning a state title there must be like a mini national tournament. Way off topic, but anybody who's a UFC junkie, probably alot of us on the wrestling board, knows that former UFC heavyweight champ Frank Mir was a 2 time state champ in Cali back in his high school days. His skills are shown alot in his old fights before his accident. Dude's a beast on the mat.
  22. I'd show up. anywhere between 200 to 215 depending on how much time to cut weight and my appetite. I know another guy who might do it. He weighs around 135, but he can probably whoop anybody under 200lbs.
