  1. Make your picks....ought to be a battle....
  2. Everyone that I have spoken with in East TN is stunned about what happened in middle & west...our prayers are with you and your families...such devastation....so sad
  3. Nobody pays attention to what hoop$ says....it's like reading the Inquirer.....As you get older, you will understand that naysayers have to post because nobody would listen to them in person... /cool.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="B)" border="0" alt="cool.gif" />
  4. Unfortunate situation....I would have gone to the head coach and warned him about his assistant's untimely comments...emotions run high during injuries whether a foul is called or not, but we as officials must continue to be calm and cool....keep those questions and opinions coming...very informative... /blush.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="blush.gif" />
  5. I had two good games, both close.....when bodies were on the floor, we had whistles...boy's game went to OT and the players decided the game, mostly with free throws...had several walking fouls called in boy's game, more than we usually have...fans were pretty good to us....maybe most games across the state went smooth... I'm waiting to hear about the nightmare games..... /bored.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":bored:" border="0" alt="bored.gif" />
  6. Everybody...go to a game tonight and give us all the details of the officiating tomorrow....should be fun to read...maybe we can all learn a few things about the perceptions of others... no heckling tonight! /popcorneater.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":popcorneater:" border="0" alt="popcorneater.gif" />
  7. This thread is heading in a great direction....of course it is Friday- and there are some crucial match-ups across the state- teams battling for top seeds in their respective districts....so im sure we will hear some negative feedback after the games tonight....but that's okay...I'll work as hard as possible tonight to be at my best...Good luck to all the teams tonight...The regular season is coming to an end soon...... /cool.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="B)" border="0" alt="cool.gif" />
  8. Fan control is the responsibility of the game administrator and security....Some places do a better job than others. When fans shout obscenities or verbally threaten physical harm to officials, order must be restored...officials should immediately summon the game administrator to remedy the problem...Any fan who comes down to the floor to confront an official should be tossed- no question...Officials should never ever confront a fan or try to toss one....Hopefully the game administrator is doing his or her job...A few places I go at the AAA varsity level, the actual game administator sits in the crowd and screams at us negatively during play.....amazing.....and then comes in at the half to offer us drinks and food and makes sure we get our check for the evening...crazy...in my opinion, he is just making himself look foolish...but it is hard for us as officials to understand...when you have your so-called game administrator hollering at you, something is out of whack, whether he agrees with our calls or not....TOTALLY unprofessional... /ph34r.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="ph34r.gif" />
  9. Same as vb.....I think it is wise to wait....all conf. and all tourney are 2 different honors, correct? (in BB) Those two lists could be very different..... /blink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="blink.gif" />
  10. In the volleyball in the past, coaches choose the all-conference teams...don't know about bb
  11. Sorry i haven't responded sooner..just got on line.....not trying to ignore the question Someone mentioned rulebook knowledge by fans earlier....subtle changes in the rules over the past few years are usually the ones fans respond to negatively, only because they aren't aware of the newer rules (ie. Team control fouls with no free throws, point of interruption for resuming play, live ball/dead ball situations, correctable errors.....) Most coaches follow along, but some haven't kept up, and are surprised at some of the newer changes. It is strange how several of the rules in high school bb don't mirror the college rules....it's kind of interesting, actually. /dry.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="
  12. hope that helps Jump stop is a tough call..as you say the jumpis legal off the one foot on to two simultaneously...then absolutely no pivot...you must pass or shoot....the problem is determining when the dribble ended and the jumping began...it happens fast//// as an official, one should not guess....call it if you are sure that it is traveling....difficult call at times, especially if there are several players obscuring the view...easier call for the trail or center to call than the lead official...hope that helps
  13. I hope this thread continues with more input from fans, coaches, and officials....as an official, it is interesting to get perspectives from everyone and from every part of the state....as i have posted before, most officials try to be consistent and to improve...believe it or not...
  14. Sounds like Larry, Curly, and Mo....Had you seen them work together before, or was it a mixed crew from what you normally see?
  15. I wuz jus kiddin...lighten up, no animosity meant toward u...if that's how u spell it...
  16. Your reasoning is as good as your spelling. I encourage you to write Ronnie Carter and express your ideas. Just make sure you use your spell check.
  17. Another generalization......When you begin your officiating career, yes you must join an association and past the open book test....Then you must learn patience.. you go through the first few years calling at the lowest level of possible games, working to get better, mastering mechanics, continuing to learn all, not some, of the rules - I'm not talking about just contact fouls and violations, but game administration, officials duties, correctable errors, etc.....Then you are required to attend a referee camp once every three years, pass the closed book test (80% or better to pass), attend at least 5 association meeting during the season, to hopefully one day get to call varsity district tourney games....And after many years of officiating at the varsity level get the honor of getting invited to the TSSAA Invitational Camp - the last prerequisite of possibly getting your name submitted by your supervisor to maybe, just maybe, get to actually officiate in a state tournament....Most officials across the entire state never get there... Most officials have a family and a real job, so you sacrifice some to do what you love- if you do it for the money, then you shouldn't be in it. Also, some officials don't set a goal to improve every time they go out on the floor..Maybe those are some of the referees you watch work, I don't know...I enjoy what I do- And finally, we always need more referees to join our ranks ...so pick up a pencil and come join us.
  18. Amen, Floor General......We could care less about number of fouls and whether the count is even...play dictates the fouls...penalize when the fouls occur, being consistent on both ends...and i ref in ET
  19. I've officiated several intra-state games (ky, virg., ga, fla. vs tn high school) in tournaments and regular season...I personally never take that in to consideration...Some states play a rougher style of play, where some types of rules (hand check, contact with bodies on the floor, etc.) are not enforced as much as in TN....Some states don't have official state associations (ie. TSSAA). In Kentucky, it is my understanding, is that you get certified as a high school official, and then you go out and contract out officiating jobs at various schools- in other words, you are not a member of a particular local association that has an assignment officer....In my opinion, that may result in fans thinking that a little bias may go in to the officials hired by any particular school....I think our system in TN is better, even though many think the TSSAA could do a better job overall with high school athletics...The schools in TN still pay our fees, but at least there is one organization that oversees the whole process.. hopefully requiring more consistency.... As for ky high school bb style of play, they usually have more contact and aggressive play in there games, probably because officials let them play a little more. Just an observation. I've never witnessed any of my partners through the years ever call against a team because they were from out of state.
  20. All interesting comments ....As someone posted earlier - I almost did laugh when I heard the assistant's comment...I didn't smile, though...You always stay in control and hold your composure, whether your upset or not..... I warned the head coach about his assistant's comment after assessing, not accessing, the first technical.....No more problems and the game flowed to the end....Thanks for the opinions...
  21. Thanks for comments and opinions on this thread, and no, bench decorum is not consistently addressed, even though it is a point of emphasis....Let me ask all readers, especially the coaches, this one situation and get your opinioed response....True story- High School Game - Head coach has been warned and has seen the hand from me after vehemently arguing a call. After a few more trips up and down the floor, as I pass directly in front of him and he screams while standing, " God ref, you just blew another one!" I stop and immediatly assess a technical foul. Right on cue, one of the asst. coaches pipes in in a normal tone, "That's the first call you have gotten right all night." Question: Would you, if you were in my shoes, call another technical (on the bench)? I'm not going to tell you what I did...I want to know what you would do....If I get enough responses, I may tell you what I did....Everyone I've related this situation to, including fellow officials, have given me various opinions...This thread seems to have some intelligent posters - I would really like your feedback....Thanks
  22. The suggestion of one meeting a year sounds plausible, but I don't think it work.....Officials vary in ability and experience just like other professions......It is the supervisor and ######./officer that have to decide who to place where and whether a particular referee can handle a particular contest. Most, I said most, officials I know do not hold a grudge when it comes to officiating a certain coach or team...that doesn't mean they appreciate or like that coach, but that they will officiate the game in a professional manner, enforcing the rules and managing each contest. Officials should always take the high road when dealing with a belligerent coach or any situation involving disagreements with players or coaches- even after they have had to penalize......PROFESSIONALISM is the key word....Coaches and players aren't always held to that standard when they are upset, antagonistic, or angry during the heat of the game....Fans and parents expect that...Fans, parents, coaches, and players always expect the officials to be calm, professional, rules knowledgable (a must, and some coaches don't know all the rules, either), and consistent.....tough to do and please all tastes..... Finally, if coaches would just concentrate on coaching and thier assistants the same, referees would be able to do a much better job, game in and game out....The best games are the ones when the referees are never noticed....much of the attention drawn to officials by everyone is, not what they call, but how the coach reacts to thier call...Some may think that the coach "working the official" is a positive thing, but usually just makes the ref's job more difficult. Just a few toughts from an official
  23. Will finish 1st or 2nd in district....Maybe can win one region game...don't think they can win in sub-state, even if they got there. They are a solid team, but they need more help inside.
