  1. Hey, no dog in the hunt here, and I have nothing but the utmost respect for Coach Reynolds and Boyd and Coach Grider and SP, their teams, their schools and their communities. But I don't recall Boyd's fans getting on here last year and going on and on about how they would have won big-time had their starting QB (Nic Hughes) had been healthy. Correct me if I'm wrong, but they offered congrats and let it go. Some of you Pirate fans need to follow their lead. Would SP have won if Robinson had played? We will never know. Maybe they would have, maybe they wouldn't have (and if they did, it sure wouldn't have been by 2 or 3 TDs, much less a mercy rule win.) But that's the nature of the game. You play the hand you are dealt as far as injuries go. Boyd was the better team tonight, no matter what some of might say. The scoreboard is the only stat that ultimately matters. Great game by two great teams, who will both probably win state. Let's just leave it at that.
  2. Someone care to explain this one. Boyd gets 13 first place votes this week, nine more than FCS, but still drops to No. 2 in 2A, even though they beat a team 62-6 last week? How many voters accidentally left Boyd off the ballot this week, or was that one TD by Notre Dame THAT much of a turning point in their minds?
  3. The opening of Signal Mountain High School has also hurt Notre Dame. Lots of kids that went to ND live up there and are going to SMHS now.
  4. No dog in this fight, but SP wins by probably 3 TDs, although I can see SP also "sending a message" and winning by 40+ as well.
  5. I believe #90 for Franklin Co. is Jonah Sells. He's a man out there. Did a pretty good job against Smith. The TB #25 Terrance Martin is one of the top ranked RB in the state.
  6. Yes, Robinson and Fennell both at basketball camp, from what I was told. Also, Signal Mountain went 6-2, including a win over Red Bank. Eagles just play be a player in the district/region before this thing is through.
  7. Results of the Signal Mtn. 7-on-7 tournament Ridgeland (Ga.) beat Red Bank in the finals. RB won the coin flip and sat while Ridgeland played Soddy-Daisy in the semis. Ridgeland scored a TD in the final minute to win, then beat the Lions. So. Pitt beat Coffee County in the first round of the single-elimination bracket, then lost to Ridgeland.
  8. The oldest of all the Hardee's Tennessee-Georgia All-Star Classics will take place at Jim Frost Stadium in Chattanooga tomorrow night as the annual Softball Classic will be contested for the 12th time. The first game of the traditional doubleheader will begin at 6 p.m. The All-Star Classic matches up recent high school graduates from a dozen counties in Southeast Tennessee against their counterparts from Northwest Georgia. The Softball Classic has long been a showcase for the area's top softball talent and have featured more college signees than any of the other Tennessee-Georgia All-Star games and this year will be no different. The Tennessee roster will be led by University of Tennessee signees, Megan Givens and Whitney Hammond, who helped lead GPS to a state title this spring. Future Middle Tennessee State Blue Raider Nina Davenport (Baylor) will also be on the roster, as will Lee University signees Jenevieve Cena (Hixson) and Charlie Wooden (Rhea County), Austin Peay signee Kristin Whitmire (Ooltewah), Tusculum signee Alesha Buckner (Soddy-Daisy), Carson-Newman signees Jennifer Long (Chattanooga Christian) and Bri Shoemake (Ooltewah), Tennessee Wesleyan signee Whitney Long (Whitwell) and future Chattanooga State Lady Tigers Laura Curtis (Chattanooga Christian) and Brittany Cooley (Sequatchie County) among others. Tennessee's legendary coaching duo of Clifford Kirk and Lamar Lasley (Soddy-Daisy) will once again direct the Volunteer State squad. Team Georgia will also have its share of future college players, as well as two of the top pitchers in the entire state. Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe Jessica Penney was named the Class AAA Pitcher of the Year this past fall after going 22-7 with 240 strikeouts and just 25 walks in 194 innings pitched. She had a miniscule 0.14 ERA and allowed just four earned runs all season long. Penney will play for Shorter College next season. Calhoun's Maddie Monroe was the Class AA Pitcher of the Year, going 33-6 with a 0.75 ERA and 380 strikeouts in 262 innings with just 33 walks. Monroe had nine no-hitters and an eight-inning perfect game in the state playoffs. She will pitch for Reinhardt College next season. Also highlighting the Georgia roster is Shorter signee Bre Johnson (Calhoun), Lee University signee Molly Rodgers (Gordon Lee), University of West Georgia signee Jordan Bohannon (Gordon Lee), Kennesaw State signee Jensen Hackett (Ringgold), Chattanooga State signee Kayla Elswick (LFO) and Covenant College signees Jennifer Friar (LFO) and Jaci Tinker (Ringgold). LFO, Calhoun and Gordon Lee all advanced to the state finals in their respective classifications this past October. Calhoun's Diane Smith and Greg Payne will coach the Peach State girls. Tennessee won 15 of the first 16 games played in the series with Georgia's lone win coming during a split in 2003. However the two sides have split the past six games. Georgia earned another split in 2006 before their first sweep of Tennessee in 2007. Tennessee rebounded to win both games last June, 2-0 and 1-0. Tennessee Tech's Holly Thomas (Ooltewah) fired a no-hitter in last year's opener. In last year's doubleheader, every player on both rosters signed to play in college. Softball Rosters Tennessee Whitney Johnson (Soddy-Daisy) Alesha Buckner (Soddy-Daisy) Kristin Whitmire (Ooltewah) Bri Shoemake (Ooltewah) Jennifer Long (CCS) Laura Curtis (CCS) Jenevieve Cena (Hixson) Charlie Wooden (Rhea County) Brittany Cooley (Sequatchie County) Samantha Mills (Sequatchie County) Whitney Long (Whitwell) Megan Givens (GPS) Whitney Hammond (GPS) Nina Davenport (Baylor) Ashley Miller (Sweetwater) Jessica Carroll (Sweetwater) Coaches: Clifford Kirk, Lamar Lasley (Soddy-Daisy) Georgia Jessica Penney (LFO) Lindsey Lowe (LFO) Kayla Elswick (LFO) D Elswick (LFO) Jennifer Friar (LFO) Molly Rodgers (Gordon Lee) Jordan Bohannon (Gordon Lee) Bre Johnson (Calhoun) Maddie Monroe (Calhoun) Jensen Hackett (Ringgold) Paige Smith (Ringgold) Jaci Tinker (Ringgold) Emily Ledbetter (Ringgold) Coaches: Diane Smith, Greg Payne (Calhoun)
  9. Team Tennessee will look to continue its dominance on the volleyball court Thursday night when the 6th Annual Hardee's Tennessee-Georgia All-Star Classic gets underway at Girls' Preparatory School in Chattanooga. The best-of-five match will begin at 6 p.m. The match will wrap up the 2009 Tennessee-Georgia All-Star Classic Series, which pits recent high school graduates from a dozen counties in Southeast Tennessee against their counterparts from Northwest Georgia. The Volunteer State squad will once again feature an imposing lineup of some of Chattanooga's best players, including five players from the host school. Heather Parman, Danna Myatt, Jasmine Brown, Megan Givens and Whitney Hammond were all instrumental in the Bruisers' 52-8 season in 2008, which culminated in a second consecutive Tennessee Division II state championship. Parman will be taking her game to UT-Chattanooga next season after recording 721 kills, 501 digs, 166 aces, 95 blocks and 685 assists to garner All-State status. She finished her prep career with 1,624 kills. Brown also was named All-State after racking up 1,168 assists, 617 digs, 418 kills, 111 blocks and 108 aces in her senior season. She will serve it up next year at the University of Tennessee. Myatt will play volleyball for Bryan College while Givens and Hammond will play sotfball at Tennessee next season. Also on the Tennessee roster will be Red Bank's Christina Teter and Melanie Gibson, Notre Dame's Erica Cowart and Amanda Marini and East Ridge standout Takeisha Parham. Teter will join Parman at UTC. She earned Class AAA All-State status last fall after recording 474 kills, 155 blocks and 68 aces. She and Gibson helped the Lady Lions to a 47-10 record and an appearance in the Class AAA Final Four. Cowart and Marini were two of the biggest hitters on the Lady Irish' perennial powerhouse squad, which won the Harpeth Hall Fall Classic back in September. Parham was a Class A/AA All-State pick. She had 624 kills, 124 blocks, 426 digs and 31 aces. Team Tennessee will be directed by Coaches Paul Brock, Michael Pittman and Sarah Lail. Team Georgia will be looking for its first-ever win in the series. Four members of this year's roster are recent graduates of Ringgold High School, which has had several players and award winners in the Volleyball Classic over the years. Lady Tigers Paige Eslinger, Leah Swanson, Monica Kafka and Megan Hall helped guide the Blue-and-White to the Area 6-AAA championship this fall and a berth in the Class AAA Elite Eight. Eslinger was the 6-AAA Player of the Year after recording 648 digs. She and Swanson will play for Piedmont College next season. Kafka is headed to Reinhardt College after recording 398 kills and 376 digs as a senior. Two Whitfield County players that will make an impact are Northwest Whitfield's Kelsey Minor and Dalton's Emily Broadrick. Minor had 897 assists, 63 aces, 26 kills and 13 blocks as a senior while the 6-foot-2 Broadrick is headed to Lee University in the fall to play for Lady Flames. Broadrick was the Area 7-AAAA Most Valuable Player and was named the All-Area Player of the Year by Dalton Daily Citizen. Her 4.5 kills per game was one of the highest averages in the state and she finished the year with 413 kills and 95 blocks as the Lady Catamounts went to the Class AAAA state quarterfinals. Dalton head coach Lisa Donahue calls her "one of the best to ever play at Dalton." Rounding out the Peach State squad is LaFayette's Leslie Welch. Welch had 384 kills, 70 blocks, 56 digs and 25 assists as a senior and was one of the most feared hitters in all of Area 6-AAA. She led the Lady Ramblers to a runner-up area finish this past fall and an Area 6A/AA title as a junior where she was named as the Area Player of the Year. A two-time North Georgia Dream Team Player of the Year, Welch recently signed to continue her career at Shorter College. Team Georgia will be coached by Jake Dickey and Jennifer Summers. Tennessee leads the all-time series, 5-0.

  11. Chattanooga's Notre Dame High School will play host to the seventh annual Hardee's Tennessee-Georgia All-Star Basketball Classic on Tuesday night. The Girls' Classic will tip-off at approximately 6 p.m. with the Boys' Classic to follow. The game features recent high school graduates from a dozen counties in Southeast Tennessee against their counterparts from Northwest Georgia. "The majority of players on each roster were awarded post-season accolades and many are going on to play in college," said Notre Dame athletic director Howie Sompayrac, whose school will host the games for the fourth time. "This is probably the best overall accumulation of talent for both the girls and the boys Tennessee and Georgia teams." Girls' series is tied 3-3. Georgia has won the last two meetings, both played at Notre Dame. Team Tennessee will be loaded with firepower as some of this past season's top scorers in the metro-Chattanooga are on this year's roster. Leading the way is Class A All-State selection April McCann (Lookout Valley), Division II All-State pick Kiera Payne (Baylor), Shelby May (Boyd-Buchanan), Candace Dyer (Tennessee Temple) and Raven Hunt (Hamilton Heights), who cracked the 3,000-point mark in her stellar high school career. Rounding out the roster are a pair of Lee University signees, Brooke Hamby (Walker Valley) and Katie Davis (Bradley Central), Tennessee Tech signee (Katherine Barker) and Takeya Day (Red Bank). Tennessee girls' coach Jason Hill (Signal Mountain) is very excited about his team. "All of our girls made the first team (Chattanooga Times Free Press) Best Of Preps this year," said Coach Hill. "Many of these girls will be going on to play in college and I'm just excited that I get to coach them for their final high school game. It's going to be a lot of fun." The Georgia squad will be paced by Shelby Farrer and Maci Siniard (Model), who helped lead the Lady Blue Devils to a 31-1 record and the Class AA state championship game. Callie Thomas was a member of Northwest Whitfield's 28-win, Class AAAA state quarterfinal team while Candice Foster, Keesha Wise and Eurise Elkins helepd lead the Rome Lady Wolves to a seventh straight state tournament appearance. The remainder of the Georgia roster includes Snead State signee Keri O'Neal (LaFayette), Ieshia Alexander (Coosa), Lauren Grisham (Dade County), Ali Witt and Brittany White (Trion) and Jodan Bohannon (Gordon Lee). "Now that our team has come together, I am very excited about the all-star game," said coach Lester Galyon of Gordon Lee, who will direct the team. "I think these girls will do well and they will be fun to watch." Last year's girls' game saw Georgia use hot outside shooting to claim a dominanting 64-45 win. The Peach State girls outscored Tennessee from behind the 3-point line, 27-0, while connecting on 11-of-14 free throws to just 9-of-24 for Tennessee. A 12-0 third quarter run was the decisive blow for Georgia. Tanisha Woodard (Rome) collected MVP honors after scoring 13 points, grabbing seven rebounds and dishing out six assists. Robyn Foster (Coosa) was the Georgia Player of the Game with 14 points and four boards while Jessica Jones (Brainerd) was named the Tennessee Player of the Game after a 14-point, 11-rebound double-double. The Boys' Classic is shaping up to be another high scoring affair. Brainerd High's 6-foot-7 game-changer Fred Sturdivant, who led the Panthers to the Class AA state semifinals, will headline Team Tennessee while Brice Sharp and Jake Trotter, who led Walker Valley to the Class AAA semis, will give the Volunteer State terrific guard play. Division II All-State pick Zane Gibson and his former Baylor Schol teammate Jordan Clark are also on the team, as is Sammy Seamster and Jerome Montgomery (Ooltewah), Volonte Bell and Frank Rice (Chattanooga Central), Bradley Britt (Red Bank), and Craig Smith (Soddy-Daisy). "I am really excited to coach this Tennessee All-Star team," said Tennessee boys' head coach Jesse Nayadley of Ooltewah. "I coached against the majority of this team and they are not just quality players, but they are great kids." Coach Glen Hicks of Dade County had similar praise for his Georgia boys squad. "The thing I like most about this Georgia team is all of these kids, even the big kids, like to run the floor and are very athletic," he said. "I think it is going to be a lot of fun to coach this group." Two members of Hicks' Region 7-AA championship and Class AA Elite Eight squad, Tyler Hughes and Jesse Moore, are on this year's roster, as are two members of Ridgeland's record-setting 25-win team, David Alexander and Derrick Sanders. The Dalton area will be represented by Columbus State signee Caz Cole (Dalton) and Bryce Martin and Tanner Reno (Northwest Whitfield), Piedmont College signee Tyler Arnold (Calhoun) will suit up, as will Nic Perry and Perie Finley (Chattooga), Logan Holland (Ringgold) and Diaunte McSears (LaFayette). The Tennessee boys took a 4-2 series lead with an 82-74 overtime win in last year's game. Georgia staged a furious comeback in the closing minutes. Sammy McDaniel (Ridgeland) stole an inbounds pass and found Tyler Holt (Ringgold) for the game-tying 3-pointer with 10 seconds left. But Tennessee Player of the Game Jesse Taylor (McCallie) scored eight points in overtime, including five straight from the free throw line, to lift the Volunteer State to the win. He finished with 18 points, including three 3-pointers and a 7-for-7 night from the stripe, while grabbing seven rebounds. Tim Benford (Red Bank) had a game-high 23 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Chris Queen (Northwest Whitfield) took home Georgia Player of the Game honors after scoring 16 points and grabbing four rebounds. There will be a 3-point shootout before each game and annual slam dunk contest will be held immediately before the boys' game. Admission for children and adults is $5. 19. AT&T Field, home of the Southern League's Chattanooga Lookouts, will once again play host the Hardee's Tennessee-Georgia Baseball All-Star Classic on Monday, June. 8. The 8th annual game features recent high school graduates from a dozen counties in Southeast Tennessee against their counterparts from Northwest Georgia. First pitch of the nine-inning game will take place at 6 p.m. Although the games have been relatively close over the years, Team Georgia is still looking for its first win as the Volunteer State has won all seven meetings since the series began in 2002. Tennessee claimed a 10-9 win in last year's contest. In that game, Georgia jumped out a 4-0 lead after one half-inning and led 9-6 in the fifth. But the Peach State bats went silent after the sixth inning while Tennessee pecked away at the lead, scoring solo runs in four of the final five innings. A walk-off single by Sam Eberle (Notre Dame) won the game with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. Dylan Craig (Baylor) was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and a RBI to take home game Most Valuable Player honors. Colton Green (Hixson) was 1-for-2, scoring the game-winner and pitching two scoreless innings to be named as Tennessee's Player of the Game while Drew Walker (Ringgold) was the Georgia Player of the Game after a 3-for-5 night with a run and two RBIs. This year's matchup should be another good one. Team Tennessee will be led by pro catching prosect Ryan Casteel (Bradley Central), shortstop Tucker Tipton (Cleveland), outfielder/pitcher Chase Brookshire (McCallie), pitcher Hunter Adkins (Red Bank), the Marion County trio of Joe Muir, Lucas Lloyd and Zephan Guyear, and Brooks Thedford, the first player from David Brainerd Christian School to ever participate in a Tennessee-Georgia All-Star Classic. Team Georgia will bring plenty of offenisve firepower to the game in the form of Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe's sweet-swinging trio of Gabe Herman, Cody Cox and Matt Holden. Also on the roster is second baseman Logan Elliott (LaFayette), John Erwin, Beau Blackwood, Garren Palmer and Carter Crutchfield (Dalton), and speedy shortstop Michael Simpson (Southeast Whitfield). McCallie head coach Chris Richardson will lead the Tennessee All-Stars while Dalton's Bobby Brotherton will skipper Team Georgia for the first time. Several All-Star Classic alumni have gone on to outstanding college careers. Among the names that have played the game include Wes Hodges (Georgia Tech and currently with the AAA Columbus Clippers), Kyler Burke (currently with the Class A Peoria Chiefs), Myles Ervin and Blake McDade (Middle Tennessee State), Jacob Robbins and Adam Cross (Kennesaw State), Ryne Simpson (Tennessee), and Tanner Moore (Tennessee/Lee).
