  1. Why don't we just take all Contact Sports away from girls they are so fragile. While we are at it I am sure the girls and the moms would love to go back 100 years with everything else. I don't want to see anyone hurt, least of all my daughter, however when she got hooked on Soccer and told me she wanted to play in College, I supported her. In supporting her, I have spent thousands of dollars since she was 9 years old on Club Soccer and any additional training she could get to perform, not only at her best, but in a safe manner. Has she been injured? Yes, broken wrist, dislocated elbow, pinched nerve in elbow, numerous sprained ankles her freshman and sophmore years of high school (which were caused from poor conditioning I might add, and an inexperienced SAQ Instructor), sprained her knee twice, and knocked out playing goal when she was 11. Every time she got hurt, it tore me up inside, and were it not for her stubborness, and love of the game, I wouldn't have said a word if she came to me and said "Dad, I am done", I would have encouraged her to do whatever else she wanted to. I say all this to say, if they want to play a contact sport, we as parents, refs, coaches and trainers, owe it to these young ladies to make sure: 1. They know the dangers and risks involved 2. Make sure they are in the best possible physical condition 3. Make sure they are properly trained by qualified coaches and trainers 4. Make sure they are protected by knowledgeable and competant officials 5. When they are injured severely, that they follow the doctors instructions to the T, and complete all required therapy, as well as not cheat and come back before they are supposed to. High School Soccer is a Competitive sport, we don't need to cheapen the game, if you want rules like no slide-tackling go play AYSO.
  2. Okay, I get the 4-0 score but what are the other numbers for?
  3. Powell 2 Halls 1 Powell goals by: Shadow Davis asisted by Kim Key Brittani Harris game winner from approx 30 yards out, unasisted Not sure girls name who scored for Halls
  4. My point exactly I apologize for continuing to harp on this subject. Obviously injuries are a part of any sport. One can see 4 headers in a row, and frequently throughout a game, and yes there is risk. We had a girl miss a couple of weeks secondary to a concussion. Potentially serious, yes, but not to the point of consideration of restricting its use. Plus, as a player, you can avoid being the victim of a head to head collision a lot more easily than being victimized by a slide tackle. I quess the 'take home' here is that we will still see slide tackles, I just hope we all can stress the importance of it being coached better, executed properly, and carefully monitored by the officials. I agree Bean, and always enjoy reading your comments. I am glad you put that in about the officials monitoring, because in a game last week they really blew a call on a slide tackle my daughter made. Either that or it was so perfect, lol, because they called a foul on the girl she slide tackled, said she pushed my daughter down, lol. I do need to work on her acting abilities though as there have been alot of teams we have played this year that do a better acting job than her. On another note, is good to see West season turning around.
  5. Interesting perspectives from all sides, and I have to say, I for one do not want to see my daughter with a life changing injury. However, are we going to outlaw Heading the ball also, as it can cause a concussion? In playing the game when I was in HS, and College, I have seen far more injuries caused from players not performing or knowing how to properly performing these skills than I have ever seen from the skill being performed. I have seen instances where if a player had done a slide tackle they wouldn't have collided head to head and end up with a concussion. I have seen instances where a slide tackle would have prevented a player from abruptly stopping and blowing out a knee. I have seen instances where a slide tackle would have prevented a collision that caused a broken leg. I am not saying a slide tackle cannot be dangerous, however when performed properly it can actually be a safer play than an abrupt change of direction or collision. My opinion is training can cure alot of the issues, and physical conditioning is really lacking in HS and even some Competitive Soccer. If you don't build the strength around the knee, around the ankle, and in the hips, all that thigh and calf muscle can create weakness in the ankle, knee and hip joints due to the weight and strain of these larger muscles. Now grant it I am not a doctor, just giving my observation from playing, coaching and observing my daughter and son play the game.
  6. Powell 5 Clinton 0 Kim Key 2 Goals Amanda Huffaker 1 goal Brittani Harris 1 goal Lauran Collins 1 goal Another ugly game for our offense, by rough estimate we (Powell) had at least 70 shots to one by Clinton. Hope we get our offense rolling soon, maybe it is just experimenting with different line-ups, who knows.... At least the Freshmen and JV got plenty of playing time again.
  7. Canes and BigG, I am with both of you on this, slide tackling is a part of the game. I do feel the problem is a result of allowing improperly trained players performing the tackle. Which in effect is a result of not being trained properly, and on the officials side lack of training, be it knowledge of what a good slide tackle is, being whistle happy, or not in proper physical condition to be in the proper position to make the call. I played the game, coached the game and ref'd the game in the past, and when it reached a point that I could not physically do what I asked the players to do, as a coach; could not physcally stay at the speed of the game as a ref...... I became an observer and fan. My point is, we are asking these girls to play a game that is a contact sport, but we don't want them to play the way the game is supposed to be played. Why? because we either, as refs we can't keep up with them or don't know the rules and as coaches don't know the proper way of teaching the techniques of the game or are physically unable to, or to proud to ask for someone who can teach them, to come help.
  8. Canes, have to say it is funny you talked about slide tackling, because I think it is a case of some not able to keep up with the speed of play, officials that is. In game with South Doyle, the ref called a penalty on their team, when my daughter slide tackled the South Doyle player, evidentally not realizing my daughter had slide tackled the girl. I guess he thought the girl pushed her down, which if he had been paying attention properly would have realized what the play actually was. You are correct though, it was consistently horrible both ways, unfortunately our girls let it get to them and didn't play their game.......
  9. You are correct we lost on 2 Penalty Kicks....can't say the officiating was bad only in our direction as it was horrible both ways. The officials totally took our girls heads outta the game, with touch fouls. South Doyles Keeper played an outstanding game, were it not for PK's should have been a 0-0 tie. I know it seems like picking on the officials, but in addition to having coached, and played the game, I have never seen so many breakaways taken away by penalties. Has the Rule changed that we due not allow advantage play? If you have the ball in your possession, and the other team fouls you, but you maintain possession on a breakaway, are you supposed to blow the whistle? Please educate me you Referees on here, because this happened on at least 5 penalties that were called. There was no flow to the game whatsoever as in the 2nd half, the whistle was blown for a foul a minimum of 1-2 times every minute.
  10. Where did you find those results? Can't find anything on the Oak RIdge Site
  11. Powell 4 Karns 0 Shadow Davis 3 goals, great Hat trick Brittani Harris 1 Goal & 1 Assist
  12. I noticed his wife was encouraging the other teams also. Because of the NCAA Rules, I did not approach her at this tournament. But I had found out that they have another daughter that plays for Brentwood Soccer Club, and is as good as #9 and #14, so that tells me something about both parents. I would love to have all 3 girls on my team. With the hard work and talent that I saw this weekend by these 2 girls having a 3rd with all that talent also, is not a coincidence. There should be more parents like them around. To set the record straight, I DID hear one of the Powell Parents say "Take her out", during that game. Some college coaches walk away from players because of parents. So we are supposed to take your word as Gospel, and your hearing is perfect? I stood near the Kat's mom and heard the things she said also, if you was the gentleman with the camera down near the endline, that took your headphones off to try and listen to what was being said, you was way to far away to hear correctly. I talked ot the parents tonite and today from Powell that were near Kat's mom and not one of them said that. It is a shame that we have to defend ourselves for hearsay, when our girls went out and beat their team soundly, while even playing all of our bench. I suppose none of the players on our team are good enough for your College, but for the record, it doesn't matter, the ones that want to play in College already have plenty of interest with offers. We have nothing but respect for any quality soccer player, but even more respect for those that play as a team player.
  13. That is incorrect, the Powell parents did not tell their players to take her out. They told them to stay with her and mark her.
  14. GREAT Tournament, nice fields, one thing I thought could have been better, the admission price, too high. .. Just curious, What was the admission fee ? Also, did Kat's father coach from the sidelines ? Nothing personal against him, just a pet peeve of mine when parent's actual talk positioning/tactics to players on the spectator's sideline, versus true cheering (let the real coach do his job)...and I noticed he did a lot of this at the CCS playday games.... D Didn't see Kat's father, but her mom sure coached from the sidelines, and constantly made negative comments about the Powell players. to quote her "this game is not important, don't worry about it" was her comment to Kat and Stormy. They are incredible players, but if the game is not important why are you out there playing it? I am sorry, every game I ever played was important, and played to win, as does my daughter. You don't cry about the outcome or go in to it not giving your all. If it isn't important and you aren't going to give it your all and play to win, then don't play it. I am not directing this at the girls, just feel it is bad advice from the parent/fan section, and wrong message to be sending to your Team.
