I agree with you. We do need to stop relying on talent and potential only. Potential gets coaches fired. If a player is playing well, the word potential doesn't come up he's called a stud. When a player is not doing his job, the coach has to talk about his potential. SHHS has a handful of players with superior talent. The problem is that they choose not to take advantage of that talent. These players don't know what it is like to work hard, never had to because of their superior athletic ability. Now that it's time to show what there made of, they don't know how, or don't think they should have to. When you see the majority of players working hard in practice and during the game, it is frustrating that these players with "superior athletic ability" are on the field during game time as much as they are. Competition can be a great motivator. If you take 2 of the "superior athletes" and make them compete for the same position, the player who wants to play, will work hard to earn that position. Put the other on the bench.
It doesn't matter what your talent level is if your attitude is of "me me me" rather than team. We have players that obviously don't put worth effort physically, but the attitudes of a few are what is detrimental to the whole team. When coach smith took this positon, I'm sure he heard about the "talent" at SHHS, but I bet he did not have an idea of the ATTITUDES he would have to deal with.
Do I agree with every decision that ss has made? no. But, as SHHS supporters, does it help the situation to criticize. If the players have to hear this from every avenue, it will effect their perspective. If your told you can't will over and over, you won't win. Maybe at this point, winning a game isn't really winning at all. Maybe winning at this point would be to achieve team unity.
