I agree with several of the points. One other thing that I would look at is if the coach I am hiring is coming in w/head coaching experience why is he leaving the last situation. I would look at that very closely. Is he a fair weather guy? Been at 4 schools 3 years each? If so I pass. I would be looking for someone who is knowledgeable, personable, and LOYAL. I want someone who plans to retire at my school. I don't want to be a stepping stone for anyone.
1.Politics are a part of the equation anywhere you go.
2. You need a communicator.
3. You need someone who finds it easy to get kids to come and bleed for him, yet does instill discipline. That is a very hard tight rope to walk.
Great point about about moving from one situation to the other. (inner city/rural)I know lots of guys who could not handle a rural position because they could never relate to the people that they are surrounded by. Same in the other direction, lots of rural guys could never "go to town" and be happy. My personal opinion is that a rural guy would be better at that transition, but maybe I am biased...LOL
I have been in a very rural situation in the past, and I think that lends itself to a greater attention to detail. You have to cover the bases or get crushed by more athletic opponents.
Another good point about being an adaptable guy in terms of X and O stuff. I think it revolves about playing to the strength of your personnel. You can't run the spread with a bunch of 4.9 kids for example.
I would say though that certain systems are more adaptable to a wide range of physical talent, the veer for example. You can change things up with formations and the like and most would not even recognize it as the veer.
Defensively the days of being in the same front and coverage every snap are long gone. too many people that are too good at what they do out there for that.
last, a coach must first be able to coach his coaches without ruffling too many feathers. He has to be able to delagate and yet be the handle having veto power and use it correctly. Any coach worth having knows that they must surround themselves with good people. Programs with little or no turnover are very often the best around, the head man needs to be able to hold a staff together.
thanks for responding.
