  1. Well Beav, you finally yapped about it enough that something has happened. I can't wait to just sit back and see all the Top Quality coaching prospects that apply. Please do us a favor and post names so we can see the level of interest this job generates. You'll be like we are right now getting the same old retreads that normally apply for valley jobs. Good luck to Grundy.
  2. Looks to me like that assistant coach from Jasper took his stop watch to Trenton to check these 40 times. If they are that fast y'all better get to the game early to get a seat. There's bound to be scouts from every NFL team and most major colleges in attendance. I say the better explanation is that the Peabody broadcast crew got a little carried away in their hype for the team. Personally I dont believe these times.
  3. If that's the case then you have to look at the fact that those guys were young when they first got involved with their respective programs. The success that they have now (or had in Vic's case) was due in large part to years of hard work. So that being said, we are back at my original state my that we need a young, energetic coach. The only thing you and I differ in (I think) is where that coach should come from. I ask you. Who do we have that's young enough and energetic enough to turn this program around? There is only one guy on staff that I would remotely have confidence in and when I talked to him over the weekend he said that he definitely was not interested. So, who do we have out there that is coaching somewhere that is young enough and would want to move back home for a long-term coaching stint? Let's see some names. That's why I say it needs to be an outsider who has proven themselves at a successful program. We may only keep them for 4 or 5 years but maybe they can work hard enough to get the feeder programs on the same page with the HS and it will make an easier transition for their replacement. I'm all for hiring local but so far no one has provided any names of peoe that would be able to get our program to the level that everyone says they want it to be.
  4. Do you really think those guys you mentioned would be long-term hires? Really? Grider looked to move but it was to Georgia for more money than we could ever pay him. I bet if you talked to him his plan was to get those big dollars for five years then retire and draw checks from both states. Smart choice on his part. I doubt he would be willing to come to Dunlap for equal or less money than he makes now. Rice was rumored to have been interested in the Jasper job but I wouldn't think he'd be a long-term commitment either. Probably stay until his son graduated then move on. Davis has been at Polk a while. He may be interested but again, how much longer is he going to coach and would he be a long-term hire?? The days of 15-20 year coaches in HS are gone. If a HS coach can survive the politics and pressure for 8-10 years they are looking to make a move. As they get closer to that 20 year teaching mark, they start looking at 3-5 year plans where they can make the most money and increase their retirement. It would be hard to get an established coach to come to Dunlap for the long-term. At least with a young coach, we might be able to keep him here for 5-10 years and let him build the program. Depends on how well we support him. Younger coaches are also more likely to be involved in helping build the youth programs and feeder teams because have the level of energy that is required to invest that much time. As coaches get older it's harder to maintain that energy level. Like i said, it's just my two cents worth and it's my opinion, but I think a young, energetic coach from a successful program is what we need at SC.
  5. Keep in mind that KC is available. We'll even throw in a couple of assistant coaches. Trying to make room so we can hire a staff.
  6. Not sure that we want a rerun coach, one that has been here before. There is an old saying that you can never go home again. Look at the coaches who have left a school then returned and was successful. Hard to find any. coaches build relationships with the community and when they leave, either by choice or force, many of those relationships are damaged beyond repair. Also, hiring alumni is not always the best option, look at SP. Let's look at some of the names... Fritz: Obviously he is held in high regard around here so why would he want to come back and take a chance on tarnishing his reputation? Besides, we can't come close to matching his current paycheck. Evans: Good guy but has not proven to be successful as a head coach. Wasn't given a fair chance at Jasper and may have been railroaded at UHS. Jason should be in line to be the next head coach at Grundy and that should happen this upcoming year. He is well liked out there and it would be a good opportunity for him to show that he has grown since his days at Jasper. Price: will never come off the mountain from his private school. I've said it before, we need to go out and find a young coach (head or assistant) at a successful program and help him bring in some help. Someone who doesn't have ties to the area, isn't related to most of the town and who is strong enough to do things his way. Look at Jasper to see how this works. Whatever direction we go, I don't think we need to make a decision until after Dec 6th to see who all might be interested. We also don't need Mr Layne to be the only one making the decision because we'll get another good ol boy and more years of mediocrity. Just my two cents worth.
  7. This cancer y'all keep talking about must be a powerful person. Y'all fuss and cuss about him/her but none of you have the intestinal fortitude to confront him/her or even put a name to this cancer. Our parents confronted Ken and got him to resign at the end of the season. Not that I like that approach but that's what they did. You want change (new coach, get rid of cancer, etc) you can't be afraid to go out and get it. We outsiders can only speculate who this cancer is that has all you long time SP people so scared. Probably can count on one hand the folks in SP that hold that much power.
  8. When the walk-out happened, all that Layne accomplished is to empower the parents. He should have grown a set and cancelled the remainder of the season. But he failed to back his coach. I feel sorry for the coaches of the other sports at SCHS when they do something the parents don't agree with. We need to focus on getting a quality coach. Not someone from within the school system. Not someone from Layne's inner circle of friends. No more Taylors, Montgomerys, Picketts, or Bargers (although he was the best that we've had in a long, long time). Go outside and find a quality, young coach and let him bring some friends. Look how well it's turned out for Jasper. Won't be infuenced by local politics. Won't have any family ties. Their only focus will be building this program I to the dominating power that it can be.
  9. Parents and kids are both soft these days. I bet Ken didn't talk no worse to them than some of my bosses have to me and my coworkers. It's a part of life that you have to learn to deal with. I know we've had some kids and adults walking around town with shirts calling for Ken to be fired. In my opinion Mr Layne should have disciplined those students who wore them to the games. He may have. He needed to support his coach. It will be hard for us to get a new coach that's worth his salt as long as the kids, parents and community are running the show.
  10. You had to know that was coming but I hate to see him go out like this. I was hoping that he could turn out program around and bring the winning ways to SC. I guess the kids today are just too soft for his style of coaching. Tommy Lane needs to take his time and do a thorough search. No more hiring friends, good ol' boys or homers. Look what that's got us. We have the best facilities in the Valley. Our pipeline is strong from Little League all the way through Middle School. There is no reason we can't get a quality coach to bring championships to SC.
  11. We as parents often become delusional about our kid's ability and the chances of them making it at the collegiate level. The NCAA estimates that only 5% of high school senior football players get the chance to play at the next level. For basketball, baseball and softball, this number is lower. During Bryant's time, has there really been a kid at Grundy that was top 5% in the Nation AND met the academic requirements to play in college? How many kids in the past 20 years have gone to college for football from the Seq Valley? Moore from SP and Westmoreland from Jasper in the mid 90's are the most notable. How many have gone on to smaller schools? And, of those that have gone, how many completed the full term of their scholarship without failing out? I "wanted" my daughter to get a softball scholarship but I didn't expect the coach to get it for her. We contacted schools on our own and had her coach send stats and letters of recommendation. Sadly, she didn't get an offer but has gone on to do very well academically and will graduate in the Spring. Parents should be the ones working for scholarships not coaches. This info from NCAA should confirm that: "Who should I rely on to help me get a college athletic scholarship and a spot on a team? YOU and only you. You can get assistance from your parents, coaches and recruiting services. But ultimately you are the only person who can make your dream of playing college sports come true. Coaches are not interested in recruiting your friends, coaches, or parents. You need to make the effort and contacts–your goal of getting recruited will not just happen. Make lists, ask questions, write letters, and surf the web for information. Ask your coaches and academic advisers for tips and advice. If you know someone who has been through the recruiting process make it a point to talk to them and seek their advice."
  12. The day Head Coaches start reading CoachT posts and developing their game plan around posts made by fans they need to be removed from the coaching profession permanently.
  13. If they are quitting because Coach is requiring more player accountability, you don't need them.
  14. I guess you always go in expecting to lose to Sequatchie because the Indians have owned you.
  15. Well. Good news from practice is that there are some really cool new wrinkles put into this offense. Bad news for most folks will have to wait another week to see them. It amazes me how much stuff there is to learn about this offense and how much KC has floating around in that head of his. The young guys are really buying in and learning. Not sure how far this team goes this year but the future sure looks bright.
  16. Tell us, oh Troll from the Mountain, in what city/county does Signal Mtn's best player lay his head down in his bed at night? I'll provide some helpful hints. Signal Mountain and Hamilton County are both incorrect answers. Your turn.
  17. No new wrinkles coming out of practice this week. Just gonna line it up and do what we do best. May not be enough to beat the recruits of ND but at least we can work on our base stuff vs real good competition. Will make the Indians better in future games.
  18. Sounds like he's trying to get another job down there at Whitwell. Wonder why he's not coaching anywhere now?
  19. Wow. Definitely not what I expected but what a ballgame. Great comeback and what a way to seal the deal! Go SC!!!
  20. Pikeville better watch out tonight. SC has a couple of new wrinkles in place and the Warriors have no shot at winning this game. After all, only one writer in today's paper picked Pikeville to win and he's the one in last place. Good luck KC and company. Looking forward to a great game.
  21. I have nothing against you Coach Taylor. I do have a problem with another former head coach who is doing everything that he can to interview for a coaching position on these threads. His arrogance may be why he isn't coaching now. As for you, you will definitely be missed on SC staff. I hated to see you go but I understand the circumstances behind it. Good luck to you wherever you end up.
  22. After yesterday's practice I still feel like SC will win this game I'm thinking now will be more like 14-18 points. Look for some new wrinkles from ol KC in this game.
  23. Where do you coach or where have you coached? And I don't think at the high school level you can look at wins as a criteria for keeping a coach because their first job is to teach. Just my opinion.
  24. Disgruntled parent stirring the crap??
  25. Yeah. Don't go thinking possum is a coach at SC. He only said he wished he was on the headset vs SP, not that he actually was on the headset. Old Ken and crew are smarter than to put another former head coach from the valley on the headset.
