  1. Same goes for Tyner in 2A. They have Demonte Bolden who committed to UT...and their other defensive tackle might be even better...he sure plays harder. Both made all state.
  2. Scooter went to Raleigh Egypt in Memphis TN. He always loved UT and I thought he would go there...when he was a sophomore he led the entire city in scoring at 30 points per game. I remember him always wearing UT stuff actually. He left Memphis because he was having differences with the coach. When he was there Wagner was there, and I guess he felt there were two sets of rules. Wagner would score 20 a game, but he also took 20 shots, and Cal is known for getting on his players pretty tough. Scooter just couldn't take it, from what I have heard and who wouldn't want to play at UT a school you wanted to go to, thats near home, and in the SEC.
  3. You lose credibility for that post GregC. The point is, you can't legislate money. Not many of the schools wanted a split, be upset at them, not us. The numbers did not reflect a change, and that was with every D2 school voting for a split! How would it benefit...say Cosby High School to be open zoned. I've been there, there ain't much there and no kid is going to drive from say...Gatlinburg a good hour or two drive, to go to Cosby. How would an open zone really help Cosby? The private schools could declare that all kids not in a certain radius of the school are ineligible...that would appease many of the public school supporters, and if it didn't they could only complain about facilities, which you still can't really complain about since those are usually set up privately through booster clubs, etc.
  4. krich- The merit system is a good system but is flawed. The problem with it is simple. FINANCIAL AIDE Brentwood academy and all the rest of the D2 schools would play up to the highest classification (against the Riverdales of the world) and they would beat them again...we would then have the same problem we had in 96. Clearly MBA was the best team in the state this year, and BA beat them so everyone would agree they are up there as well. Those two teams would beat 95% of the football teams out there (last year BA beat the 5A state champion BHS). I support a multiplier and a 1.5 cus I don't want to hear people complaining that schools are intentionally lowering their numbers. I don't think you all realize that when you lower your numbers, you are lowering your revenue. There are many things that are more important than what classification you are in... Paying the day to day bills, paying the teachers salaries, insurance, etc. Remember, private schools aren't getting that government money for education.
  5. I propose that CPA is a very good team when it plays teams that are near their enrollment. They are going to struggle against teams like MBA and here is why. 1-Three times the enrollment 2-Better Coaches (Look at Rutledge) 3-Better Facilities 4-Give out more money for financial aid...if you want to substitue BA, McCallie, Baylor instead of MBA, I'm actually not sure if MBA does financial aide. The first reason and the fourth reason are differences that CPA can not control. If you took those reasons out, and left just the second and third, then I would say that CPA should just deal with it...just as I say the publics should just deal with it in 1A (assuming the privates have #2 and #3)
  6. Memphis Fairley, a school with two D1 prospects on it went to Hawaii over the break. The kids raised money (around 10,000) by asking for donations and through churches... It's a public school to Muffin
  7. CoachT has been nice enough to let me, Gomab, and Opperman be moderators. He has never said that we could not give our opinions on things. I'm sure coachT pulls for the high school that he teaches at, just as you support the high school in your local community. We all have different tastes, gomab gives his opinion, and I am very thankful for it. He puts in a lot of work going to various tournaments and does not get paid a stipend for doing it... I would have no idea how good many of the kids are around this state without the help of Gomab and CoachT. Just today I went to this site to see how Brentwood Academy was doing, and how tall Brandon Wright has become. I wouldn't have gotten that access without this site (my other informants are all over seas or doing espionage) You can be a forum moderator and be bias, I have not seen any moderator lock a "Go Bradley Central" thread have you? If someone is doing that, please tell me, I'll gladly unlock it if possible or speak to the criminal man to man. I can pretty much tell you what moderator pulls for which school, I apologize if you think moderators like myself are too bias.
  8. I asked a question and I gave the reason that I didn't think they would be as good...BGA has done pretty well against them recently, and BGA isnt as good as the D2-AAA teams. I didn't say they wouldn't work is hard, or their coaches would quit, I wasn't trying to imply that either. So please don't make it out like I was.
  9. I don't classify any advantage as fair or unfair...including a free education.
  10. The reason private schools wish to play public is very simple. Look at who they would have to play if they leave D1 (even though there isn't a D1). Are you going to want to play D2 schools like BA, CBHS, MUS, MBA that have more people than you. Better tradition, more coaches, better facilities, and will give out scholarships to kids while you do not. If you answer YES (you can't answer yes to the scholarship thing since that doesn't hold true for public schools) then fine...Go to AA. The public schools are just as unwilling to leave 1A and go to 2A as the private schools are to leave 1A and 2A and have to go to D2. Do you think Lipscomb would be nearly as good in D2? Probably not, They have struggled against BGA the last couple of years, who is a very good D2-AA school, but I would place them behind MBA, CBHS, BA, McCallie, and perhaps MUS.
  11. A free education is an advantage that public schools have. Kids that are good athletes that can not afford to go to a private school or are unwilling to pay that amount (heck, I'm unwilling to pay 12 dollars for chicken at KFC when I can get it for 8 at Krogers) can take advantage of this education. If the person who asked that comment was sincere then that is fine, but I stopdealing with this board when I have to explain myself over things like that.
  12. Have you ever heard of a free education?
  13. Hey, I'm not saying privates don't have an advantage...I can think of advantages both ways. You people just won't admit that public schools have advantages too. If you are willing to put a multiplier on ALL open zoned schools, then I'm a happy camper. I don't really like us doing it, but I at least think it is more fair than seperating schools.
  14. It's not that surprising when you think about how many more kids are on a team at a private school. Let's say a private school has 50 kids and a public school has 30-35...Sure private schools might only make up 20% of the total schools in 1A but when your teams are one and a half times the size of a public school...that 20% isn't as glaring. When you look at Cloudland, a school that regularly has 50 kids on a team...they are well represented on the All State list with 4 players.
  15. krich- I've been in this debate probably longer than 80% of the people on coachT have been members...everything has been said has been said for years...it hasn't changed. How about instead of punish, we use the word...REWARD. Do we reward the public 1A schools that can't compete by weeding out the best competetion. We do not do that in D2. I have spoken at length the advantages that MBA, MUS, CBHS, BA, and many other D2-AAA schools have over the D2-AA schools (larger enrollment, better facilities, more coaches, perhaps better coaches (Rutledge is probably as good as you will find in the country), more scholarship money) Do I complain about this? No...I really could care less, but it troubles me when I look at my school and my brothers school and I see how much more other schools have, and then I have people on here that complain about playing schools with the same enrollment as themselves. I do not have any argument against Brentwood Academy. Their school is relatively the same size as mine. Their facilities are about the same, they give out more scholarship money...but on the whole..they are the same as my school. MBA, is not the same in terms of enrollment...Do you think I am wrong for saying that MBA shouldn't be playing against the D2-AA schools (BY FAR THE BEST FOOTBALL TEAM IN THE STATE THIS YEAR). It really comes down to a couple fundamental questions: In your heart and mind, do you feel that the privates will be "punished" playing in AA? Do you think that Boyd, CPA, DCA, EZELL, et al couldn't compete at the AA level? Yes, you are punishing them and I will tell you why. When I was a senior, we were ordered by the TSSAA to play two of our regular season games against the D2-AAA schools. A third game must also be played against a fellow D2-AA team but it had to be from another region...There are only 2 regions in D2-AA...Middle/EAST, and West. So we played BA, they didn't bring a lot of people, and we got thumped good in the second half (they had over 100 guys). We then played MUS and lost to them in the second half as well (They had over 100 guys as well). Both games was only a 7 point game at half. We then had to drive 6 hours to play Knoxville Catholic a team we beat...My school plays at least 7 home games a year...we rotate home and home with SBA, ECS, BCS and thats it...the rest of our games are at home. Do you think we lost money on this deal...remember, we were ordered to play those three teams? The answer is obvious. Yes we were punished, and if you do the same thing to the private schools, they will go through exactly what we went through...it's not all about winning and losing...if we had beaten those three schools, it wouldn't have changed our seeding for the playoffs so who really cares, but we lost money that way. If we had been forced to travel across the state in other sports...golf, wrestling, basketball, cross country, I guarantee you...we couldn't manage. That is the reason the D2 schools wanted all the privates to come to D2, so they wouldn't encounter the problems we encountered. I'm still not against a multiplier...i'm for it, because of the participation ratio, thats the only reason I'll endorse it.
  16. I can do it just as easily as he can compare ETSU and UT in basketball and football. The real key is, do we punish private schools because public schools are unable to field teams. Period, end of discussion...thats it. No one wants to say that, but that is the problem.
  17. White Station should have no problem getting out of Memphis. The only two teams that could give them problems in the actual city are... Ridgeway-They have three legitimate D1 players in Rice, Mincy, and Niles. Henning does an excellent job of coaching them. Hamilton- If Shawne Williams gets eligible this team can be dangerous. He needs to stop worrying what Anderson is telling him and just take over...they are so deep and tall that I could possibly see an upset there. JNS- they look oftly tough both them and WSHS can go to state correct?
  18. Your ETSU example makes perfect sense...How about my example comparing UT and ETSU in football in terms of finances. Do we seperate schools because one school has better facilities, coaches, and tradition over another one? No, of course not, so therefore we shouldn't do it for public schools. I'm not deflecting any criticism on to basketball...I simply went to another sport (remember a multiplier will change other sports) so therefore we should talk about it. I used Cosby because we were talking about student participation and how Cosby has that in basketball...and also, not coincidentally, fields an incredibly competetive team every year. That is the reason I went to it, to prove the fact that public school support leads to very good teams...If the support is there in football, I would see no reason that very good teams couldn't be fielded. If you agree that student participation is the major problem here, thats fine...where we disagree is the fact that you do not punish schools because other schools have trouble fielding teams...I do not believe that is their problem. Antwan-Thanks for telling me I'm beautiful, The world isn't against us though...last time I checked the Supreme Court was with us, and so was the TSSAA...I could really care less who disagreed with me, as long as I have those two on my side, I'm in pretty good shape...So perhaps you should say, the world, minus the TSSAA and the United States Supreme Court. This debate is starting to go in circles...I'm growing tired of it, and am starting to realize the reason I stayed away from this board for the last 5 months, I do enjoy talking about these subjects as long as it goes in different directions and we aren't arguing over the same thing every time.
  19. Hmmm See this is the public school mentality. It's a problem as long as we are losing. You don't have a problem with the private schools in basketball because the public schools are very competetive, so there is no problem. Only in football. There is either a problem or there isn't one. If the privates win, there is a problem, if they don't then there is none...well there is, we will just go to another sport. darned if we win, darned if we lose.
  20. pujo has hit on the above a few times, and several have laughed at him; but he's right. Many of the rural kids have no interest in sports, a college education, etc.; so we can't ''blackmail'' them into playing sports. All we have to do is recognize the percentage of those who go on, and ultimately complete college, from private vs. public shcools. Again, good post. That is very sad that rural kids do not wish to play sports or perhaps get a college education. Unfortunately, that excuse just doesn't hold water. Do I believe it...Yes Do I think we should split teams up, change divisions, rivalries, traveling, gate receipts, scheduling, and sports programs because of it...No Many people do not want to talk about a rural/ urban problem because of the racial over tones. Many of the good athletes live in the city. The odds are that most athletes can not afford to go to a private school (heck most kids, regardless of their athletic accomplishments can't or are unwilling) Those odds would mean that there were more athletes at public schools rather than private. Do the private schools complain...No I have seen teams like Cosby compete in basketball. I remember a couple years ago they had the state record for most three pointers in a game. They even beat an Ingle Martin led MBA team in basketball that year. MBA had won three straight D2- basketball championships. Cosby is not the largest public 1A school, but the interest is there. They have had guys like Mark McGaha and other great players... They don't make excuses in basketball, because they can compete against any school in basketball...but teams like them make excuses in football, simply because they can't. Not one private school is whipping up on Cosby in basketball, maybe one year it's Chattanooga Christian, the next it's Temple...I just don't see a valid excuse they can make, unless they say open zones, which still doesn't amount to much because you have schools that are single A that are playing against them and not doing well. P.S. Cosby doesn't own that three point record anymore. About three years ago Taurean T-Head Moy from Booker T-Washington had like 26 threes or something like that in one game! He scored around 80 points or so...Guess what. BTW is a public school...and it has open zones!
  21. krich- I don't know how old your son is, but let's pretend he is 12, and wants to attend a private school. He has never played football and is a decent sized kid...aka your son is average athletically (hey most people are right?) The private school is not going to know how good your son is...most kids transfer in the 7th or 9th grade when elementary school or middle school ends. I did not get admitted to my school because of my athletic accompishments, actually when I was in the 7th grade, I wasn't very good in basketball, and didn't play football. I played football in the 8th grade and loved it and lettered in it three years as well as varsity basketball. I was only 5'7 or so as an 8th grader, and played center, not the most imposing person you've ever seen...I got admitted to the school cus I passed the test and my parents were willing to pay that much money for me to go there...not because the church of christ administartion was psychic and knew I could contribute in 6 years...
  22. WSHS has 3 players that are D1 calibur players...and then a few more than will play college ball somewhere...you got guys like Colin Cunningham, one of the best shooters in Memphis coming off the bench...oh yeah, he's 6'7. BC is a very good team, I saw them play this summer, I wasn't very happy with how their fans acted, it was a summer game, and it wasn't the playoffs, and they seemed to complain about a lot of things, and wanted everyone to know that they were indeed "missing two starters." Screaming at the referees and the other teams fans was also a little uncalled for, but their team won, so they can't be too upset. I will not let people's fans change my opinion of a team, I think they are a very good team, they might win state this year, who knows. They do not have more talent that Fairley though...6'9 Rousean Cromwell is a jr and a Nike Camp attendee and 6'6 Reginald Owens is a man child...those two are big big big time D1 recruits. I'd also say that R.E. has more talent...Lawrence Kinnard, Vashon Ingram, Rico Seay, that freshman PG, are all D1 recruits and possibly even 6'5 Larricus Brown (one of my favorite players to watch). Ridgeway also has more talent with 6'6 Pierre Niles, Nike Camp attendee when he was 15 who is being recruited by Memphis and D1 schools, 6'7 Michael Rice who is being recruited D1 and PG Jordan Mincy, who I personally know has gotten letters from schools such as Arizona. I could go on and on about teams but fans will believe what they want...so let them, I could care less, I didn't go to any of these high schools and I live in Knoxville, so I honestly don't care who wins it.
  23. To irmo from SC? My brothers team played Sacostee High School led by Lucas Varga (has had a few games this year where he scored 33 and 38) we lost but had a chance to win..shs is like 8-1. They then played Myrtle Beach who has a kid being recruited by a ton of D2 schools like Oklahoma State, the MBHS team had beaten Sacostee and we beat him...That kid averaged over 30 a game. Do you know the two teams I'm talking about? Sacostee and Myrtle Beach High School.
  24. Opperman thinks White Station is better. You are upset cus he thinks that. I'm a moderator, I think that as well. If BC beats them, I'll still say WSHS is better. WSHS has been better over the last few years, and beat them this summer I saw BC lose a game this summer...and WSHS win several times. VOLNTN-Memphis does have great talent, it's better talent than the rest of the state. They also have a better tradition in basketball than any school in TN or in Mississippi. I'd say Arkansas, UK, and a few other SEC schools are better, but traditionally Memphis has been better than just about any school...including UF. They had a chance to win the national championship in 1973...but Bill Walton gave probably the best individual national championship performance ever. Hmm can UT say that? I'm a big UT fan, I go there...but Memphis would have beaten UT the last two years.
