  1. Trinity's average margin of victory for 2010 was 31 pts, scoring an average of 41 ppg to their opponents 10 ppg. This schedule included Cincinnati Elder and St. Xavier of Cinn, in which both games held them way below the above mentioned average. A close game against Bowling Green H.S. also lowered the average in a 14-12 victory. The average margin of victory in the playoffs was 40 ppg to 7 ppg. They won the State Championship 38-0. All wins vs 6A schools or teams that play in the Super Power League. They have an enrollment of 1400 students and 1st dibs on any football player within 30 miles of the school. Put your 3 best athletes on the field from Ensworth, MBA, and BA and you'll have Trinity.(I know that equals nine, but Trinity was not superb at all positions) Losing can instill many attributes, one of which can be humbleness. BA, and MBA both can be better teams for playing this game. It just depends on the lesson taught.
  2. In spirit of the topic.....While certainly unpleased with the outcome, to say MBA was an embarrassing representative of TN football would be comepletely untrue. MBA's offensive game plan was exceptional and should have tallied 21 pts in the first half against the KY powerhouse. MBA had wide open receivers on many occasions that were not due to 'blown coverages' but due to the fact that Trinity's safety's played at 8 to 10 yrd depths and were very aggressive on the run which made them suspect to the play action pass. MBA showed a decent ability to run the ball against an extremely talented D-line front. The refs did help set a "not in our house" precedent early in the game (mainly a few cheap shot calls or lack thereof)and it appeared that some of the Big Red players were intimidated by the antics. MBA recovers an on-side kick, and after discussion, ruled to be touched before it traveled 10 yrds, although no flag was visible anywhere on the field. MBA also drew a Trinity player offsides on a punt with a long snap count that would have resulted in a 1st down and kept that drive going for the moment. After a 'no call' on a dislodged pass, fumble, TD? you could feel the tide turning, but slowly. The MBA players that remined on the field played the remainder of the game up until mid-way 4th quarter with intensity and never backed down from Trinity. MBA did look confused up front on offense but you had to see the stunts Trinity ran and the talent running them. I was most displeased with the 3rd tier of defense but for now will give the 'benefit of the doubt' simply, again, because of the talent level. MBA's kicking game looked better than average and it's coverage proved worthy. Overall, I give the Big Red a solid C+ against a team that will be unparalleled in it's schedule this year. MBA had the talent to play with Trinity. I am not sure it could sustain the intensity for a full 4 quarters in which T of L, in all appearances, could. I am sure, minus a few early calls, add a few hearts, the final score would show a more narrow margin of victory for the Rocks. So not to be confused, I am NOT saying the refs blew the game for MBA. Anyone that follows HS sports does know the 'tone' can effect the way the game is played. Win or lose, I was proud of the way MBA conducted itself on the field Friday night. If osmosis could spread the swagger some of the players displayed last Friday night then the rest of the season should prove exciting. It's early and I am sure by years end the "cream will rise to the top" on the Big Red's roster and should make for another interesting conclusion to DII football. Good Luck to all and God Bless!
  3. Not quite that old. I do however remember the largest crowd I have seen being the State Championship at Vandy where I believe Gallatin played Lincoln Co.It seemed the crowd was larger than those the Commodores were drawing at that time.I forget the name of Lincoln Co.'s coach, but they too were a respectable program for a lenghty period. I wonder what the record attendance is for a Championship game? Also, Father Ryan and Maplewood's regular season battles drew large crowds.
  4. Yeah KW, I played in the Boyce Smith Youth football league during the 70's. Springfield would take up the ENTIRE field with players during warm-ups. Their 11 and 12 yr old youth teams must have dressed about 60 kids. Boyce Smith made Springfield a football town. Sad to see the lack of support the community gives the school now.
  5. Wow, I was unaware of this. Did Coach Daniel leave and return? I played against those guys 85-87 in the "Town and Country" bowl. They were always competitive. Thanks for the info.
  6. What about these? 1) Dickson HS coach Charlie Daniel from 1977-1986 Wins-81 losses-29 with a State Champinoship in 1980 Under Coach Daniel Dickson HS was always tough and competitive. A true powerhouse under his tenure. 2) Randy Thomas at Springfield HS was very talented and charismatic (who can forget the hat he wore?).Coached from 1993-2002. Winning a State ring in 93, his teams were always exciting to watch and very physical. His record faded toward the end but I believe the school was bumped in classification? Either way he did 'alot' with a little while there. 3) Coutras while at Overton, a legend 4) Milan coach John Tucker from 1969-1993 wins-225 losses-61 ties-2
  7. "Don't know Coach Spangler but I do know this...he didn't play for Bear Bryant at Alabama cause Bryant didn't get their until 1958 and you can look that up on the Alabama website"! I stand corrected. He played in 1945 for the Undefeated Rose Bowl team, LATER becoming friends with the "Bear". I am sorry if I offended you. google- Corrected Supplement.qxp spangler
  8. Ralph Spangler graduated with honors from BGA, went to Alabama, played for 'Bear' Bryant and winning a National Championship at 5'8 170 lbs starting at offensive guard. The man has never smoked, drank or cussed one day of his life but was one of the hardest men to play for. A disciplinarian and perfectionist. This man is the finest example of the word Gentleman that ever lived. Inducted into the TN Coaches Hall of Fame. The scoop...From 1951-1969, CCCHS's precursor school, Ashland City High School, was coached by Ralph Spangler. For 15 of those 19 years, Coach Spangler was the the school's only coach, with no assistants on the gridiron. It was not until 1966 that Coach Mike Jarreau, for whom the current football field is named, became Coach Spangler's first and only assistant coach. During Coach Spangler's tenure as head football coach, he accomplished the following: Overall record of 115 wins, with just 45 losses and 3 ties 7 Combined Conference Championships (Lower Cumberland Valley & Little Seven Conferences) 6 Bowl Teams (Includes "Civic, Blanket, Civitan, Lions, Booster, & Dickson Bowls") 3 Undefeated Seasons (1956, 1958, 1968) Due to the untimely death of the school's principal, Coach Ralph Spangler resigned at the end of the 1969 season and took over as the Athletic Director and head of the boys P.E. Department. The only high school in the county moved from downtown Ashland City following the spring of 1970, and in the fall of 1970, a few short miles down US-12, the doors to Cheatham County Central High School opened. Spangler was also the head baseball coach, Head girls basketball coach (Coaching Pat Head Summit) and took care of all the fields Another Legend would be Calvin Short of Gallatin, The Ole' "Green Wave" Probably one of the most recognizable names in Middle Tennessee with regards to football. Short was the head football coach at Gallatin High School for eighteen seasons from 1976 to 1993 during which he earned three state championships and three runner-up titles for the Green Wave. The first championship came in 1978 and began the domination of Gallatin through the 1980s. Gallatin went on to collect state titles in 1989 and 1992. Runner-up titles came in 1982, 1987 and 1991. The G Factor, a term coined during his time as the Gallatin High School head coach is synonymous with Coach Short. Quick note: Coach Short was probably the first in TN to master the art of (at the time) legal recruiting prompting the TSSAA to revamp the rules after many tried to follow his lead (Can you guess who?). Nonetheless, the man was a genious in many ways and brought Big Time football to a small town. A true legend. Ask anyone that has played or was associated with either of these men and the response is overwhelming, "We would do ANYTHING for our coach". I know this is under the DII section but Rankin was mentioned. IMO, you can't really decide one's excellence based on their ablity to win with a 'loaded' team but one's ablity to win with whatever players he is dealt. That takes a real coach. Can you name some of those. The guys that won games in "One horse towns" with players zoned to them only? Spangler was one.
  9. While your point is well taken. The issue at hand is much larger than presented. Federal tax dollars are bribing the states as to how they are to 'Educate' our youth. 'No child Left Behind' is a failure. G.E.D.? A joke! For many years, a college education was only obtained by the privelaged. Unemployment rates, a booming increase in population, and longer life spans forced our 'Republic' into slowing down younger adults from reaching the ranks of 'employable'. Student loans were made available to any who applied. Small universities popped up all over the nation. Anyone that wanted an 'Advanced' education could not be denied. All because we had to slow down the populas from reaching an employable status. Then the idea popped into some CEO's head "Lets fire the workers that have 20+ yrs. experience or 'Buy them out' and hire these young 'educated' adults that will work for half the pay"."We'll give them important titles and let it appear attractive, while spending less money and offering less benefits". C'mon, the entire educational system is outdated and in fact a joke. I recently read the Master thesis of a student about to graduate. A student that will hold the elite status of obtaining a MASTERS DEGREE. It was a pathetic. It would not have recieved a B in a 10th grade sociology class 20 yrs. ago. The entire process has been cheapened. Why do we have men playing pro sports, making millions, I add, that can barely read or write? Players that have come out of major Div. I schools? Players that hold 'college degrees'. Players, that after retiring, would be welcomed on any H.S. campus as a coach. Teachers hands are tied because of 'red tape' as to how well or much they can actaully do. But, the pay was fine when they decided to enter the profession. Why whine now? I put my life on the line every day I go to work for about the same pay. I would love to coach, but I dare spend valuable time away from MY children going back to obtain a piece of paper that says I'm qualified. I dare say this post would qualify the education I received during the 80's in 'high school'. While not the most intelligent human walking the earth, I have remembered from whence I came..... From a world where things were viewed from the eyes of 'realists', not 'idealists'. A world where things were once simple and EFFECTIVE. While your post stirred some simple responses, the answer is quite complex. Your original post was not clear and if there ever was an 'AGENDA' it was certainly well hidden. Many points were made in all your posts. So, don't excuse the resondees as ill equipped, bitter slackers because they spot some of the flaws in a hardly succeeding profession. Forget the issues, excuses, whatever you may call them. Simply look at the results that our educational system is producing. The answer? You tell me. But, I seriously doubt that volunteer coaches are the problem. Please receive this with it's intended purpose. That I believe we are all frustrated with the ENTIRE process. But, no need to worry "Change is coming"!
  10. Hats off to the Lady Rockets.....Anyone in Class 1A that says they would want to be in Forrest's shoes would be lying...TSSAA claims a blind draw, while we all know rule changes over the past decade has done everything to bring sub-par talent to the big show....Call it what you want but the best two teams are playing today at 1pm..IF Clarkrange wins this game, no one will come close to beating CR...Anyone that has coached knows the hardest thing to do is motivate a team week in and week out...Clarkrange may be the most confident team in the state, however every dog has it's day....A lopsided victory over Forrest the first game of the year may give Clarkrange a skewed vision of thier opponent. Make no mistakes, this is not the same Forrest team they saw previously. Forrest is playing with confidence and poise. Revenge will bring a determination the Lady Buffaloes haven't seen all season. I expect a good game, Forrest has proven depth coming off the bench and are a very well conditioned team. Clarkrange may be the best team in the state but they'll have to prove it today....As stated previously, if Forrest falls, hand the trophy to Clarkrange. 'Cause the Lady Rockets are Class 1A's only hope......Good luck to all....
  11. What appears to be one of the top games this weekend, the Forrest Lady Rockets are at home against Wayne Co. Wayne Co., coming off a loss to Conersville, plans on giving Forrest all they can stand. Forrest has already proven they can handle thier pesky rival with a victory over them earlier in the year. At the time, Forrest baller Beth Hawn was sick, but still managed to play. Healthy now, she is poised to make a bigger difference this time around....The biggest difference may be the steady play of Summer Waggoner, who scored her 1000 pt last week, and the balanced scoring of the entire team....Forrest is no longer a team that can be stopped by shutting down Hawn. The only question is if Forrest realizes it. Waynce Co. has shown they are capable of pulling off the win but, if Forrest comes in with a swagger about themselves this game shouldn't be close...The Lady Rockets have demonstrated overwhelming victories the past few weeks, beating a solid McEwen team, Wednesday by 22 pts. With Forrest defending thier home court, Hawn healthy, solid guard play, and dominate post play in Waggoner and Porter, the only way Forrest loses is by not knowing they are supposed to win this game big. I expect a good game early but Forrest proving too strong in the end for a hobbling Wayne Co.....Forrest wins 58-41.
  12. Forrest High School is quickly becoming a basketball haven for girls talent in TN. The last three years Forrest has signed at least 4 girls to scholarships, proving themselves to be an upcoming mecca for Middle TN talent. The latest, Senior Summer Waggoner, has officially signed with Freed Hardeman. Waggoner, a well poised and hard working leader has shown that determination and good character pays off in the end. Making her committment official last week, Waggoner will be a pleasant addition to the Universities program. Overall, Forrest players have demonstrated impeccable work ethic and proven that teamwork and unselfish play builds winners. With the present, and future talent feeding their system, it appears, this school will remain a force to reckon with come tournament time.
  13. .......And Mount Juliet High School has produced how many State Championships? What Happens?
  14. Lady Rockets again prove why they are always there in the end. Forrest continues to improve as the season begins to close while opponents seem to peek early. Stellar performances by Hawn (24 pts.) and Freed Hardiman signee Summer Waggoner (13 pts. ) prove to be too much for Eagleville. Go Lady Rockets! All the way to State!
