  1. ......Oh what fun!! Where do I begin......

    Score:

    St. Agnes 5, Briarcrest 0

    Current Records:

    St. Agnes: 5-0-1

    Briarcrest: 0-3-2

    St Benedict: 2-1-3

    Hutchison: 3-0-2

2011 goal totals (six west division games) 25-2

2012 goal totals (one game in the books) 5-0

(last year may be in jeopardy...)

    Article:

    http://www.commercia...ked-stars-past/

No need to repeat ALL the posts from last spring. As an outsider with "no dog in the hunt" this was quite easy to predict. I certainly need to watch St. Agnes play this year and look forward to seeing an offensive attack from all sides of the goal. I guess i need to go to the Hutchison game as it appears they have the second best team from the west!

Funny thing from last night - I actually heard that the BC parents were upset that SA left thier starters in so long!!! That's a good one - the Saints dont typically apply the "mercy rule".

Hutchison was 2-12-3 last year but was competitive against a lot of good teams. Mostly had trouble scoring....'12 version of Hutchison is improved, but the next 5-6 games are going to tell a good bit. 3 tough games in the Rivals tournament and then St. Benedict and St. Agnes. Supposed to play @ Briarcrest last week, but it was when the hurricane remnants came thru for most of the day. A lot of talented young kids have helped bridge the gap a bit this year.

I would expect SBA, Hutchison, and BCS to have some good battles between each other and that along the way SAA will have a tough time with one of them at some point. However, until someone can actually beat them, they are the clear leaders of the West.

  2. Think I agree but not for legal reasons. Fairness is the major reason. VB Tournaments start on Friday nights and are not every Friday. Most games are on Tuesday and Thursdays butr if scheduling or tournaments are a distance away, there could be a variance on days. Yes, accomodation is generally made for football but in extreme cases, tournaments games could be played on Fridays and Saturdays.

Not to mention that in Division 2, the Middle and East teams will typically choose to play Fri/Sat when traveling to the other Region for the crossover matches. That keeps them from missing multiple days in the classroom to travel and and from making multiple trips play "regional" games in the regular season. Could you imagine a scenario that would block say Harpeth Hall and GPS from playing each other on a Friday night?

  3. Title IX applies to the equal opportunities for females to play sports, not what night they get to play it. I love volleyball but the fact is the school I root for would not be able to compete for fans if they played on Friday nights in the fall. But the school does draw in more than just parents for Tuesday and Thursday games which imo helps grow the sport.

Which means they have an equal opportunity to showcase their talents on a Friday night. Many tournaments start on Friday night to ensure that teams can get plenty of games played and so that they can end on a reasonable time on Saturday.

The TSSAA will not block out Friday nights for the simple risk of someone even trying to take them to court over a Title IX issue and costing them tons in legal fees.

I like football as much as the next person, but doing this also sends a message to other sports that Football is held in a higher regard than all other sports. That in itself is a message that I can not see the TSSAA wanting to send.

  4. D2 AA West right now is 1) SBA 2)Agnes 3) Hutchison 4) Briarcrest

Hutch beat Briarcrest ; Agnes beat Hutchison ; SBA beat Agnes

SBA has not fallen off despite losing a lot of good seniors.

Agnes is probably the most talented all around, but they have been without their star player (Porter?) for a few weeks bc of injury.

Hutchison is fairly young across the board, but they have a good bit of talent. One of those teams that can lose a head scratcher on Tuesday and then pull out a match that nobody would expect them to win the next day.

Briarcrest is really young but scrappy.

I think that SBA, Agnes, and Hutch will all be at the Tennessee Tandem in Chatt next week.

  5. After thrashing Arkansas' #1 ranked team last Thursday on the road, MUS dropped in all the polls. Guess the pollsters weren't paying attention, as if that were a surprise. Maybe they thought it was Fayetteville, TENNESSEE....

Thats akin to the Commercial Appeal dropping them after the loss to Ensworth despite the fact they had just hammered the team they fell below in a game like scrimmage.

  6. It seems refing has seen a decline in Chattanooga and in all parts of the state this year. Most likely from needing 2 ref's for each game instead of 1. I was also told by a parent that at St Benedict in Memphis they did not supply official line judges for the sub state match with GPS. They used parents for line judges and at a sub state game the coach should of protested the match. We were told when hosting you must use 2 non-school related line judges by TSSAA. They also said the refing was worse then in Chattanooga. I guess it depends on if you win or lose.

My understanding is that it is not required in the first two rounds. Most schools do bring in 2 referee's to be line judges to avoid controversy. Its a small fee to do this and since you can take it out of the match proceeds (which is divided evenly between the 2 schools and TSSAA after expenses), it typically does not end up coming out of the schools pocket.

Our school had 2 for the 1st RD game (they were subject to availability though) and Baylor provided 2 for the State Quarterfinal.

My understanding for the for SBA is that they only had an R1 and R2 as you mentioned. I am not sure if this was an oversight, lack of availability, or just plain not wanting too. I do know that they did have 1 SBA and 1 GPS parent on the line instead of having 2 from SBA.

  7. Didn't realize I was a female. <_<

The yellow card was egregious and unwarranted.

I will reserve comment for the rest of the match as not to diminish the accomplishments of the Baylor girls.

That said, good luck to the Memphis teams at the State Tournament.

  8. MUS lost 19-7. The defense made the adjustments after half, but the offense didn't produce much. MUS is 1-2 with losses to Ensowrth and SP. I think MUS is better off now though because of those two losses. MUS is young and I think they learned a lot in those two losses. If MUS stays healthy I think they can win the rest of their games and make it to the championship game.

Yep. Their D is much improved over last year. 1 of SP's TD was a KO return. Enworth also had a kick return and score 2 td's after getting the ball handed to them in the red zone.

If their special teams and offense comes along, they are going to be a tough out in the playoff's. I am a little shocked their O-Line has not faired a little better to date. Thought it would have held better in the 2 losses.

  9. IMO, to much was taken from MUS opening week loss to Ensworth. Simply put, the Owls were just sloppy in that game and that in itself is just uncharateristic of them. Likewise, too much is probably being taken away from SP after the loss to Hoover. They lost 25 players off last years squad, but they do have have some talent. Antonio Conner will be the best player on the field, no matter what.

I see this as a close game and think it could honestly go either way. MUS will have to avoid the costly turnovers from game 1 on offense, while forcing SP to beat them via the air. I would keep the ball away from Conner all night. No way I give that kid a chance to make a play.

  10. Any word on Rossville Christian, coach seemed to be doing a pretty good job, was he released or did he resign?

He is also the AD, Boys Basketball Coach, Girls Basketball Coach. Saw him coaching basketball 2 weeks ago. That is all I am aware of.

  11. How is MUS going to be next year? Will they be able to compete with SP and OB? I really respect the way MUS takes on top OOS comp. You mentioned a possible third OOS match-up? E. St.Louis is not too terribly far to travel for either team. That game has potential.....

They should be pretty good. Will have a strong senior class with several D1 prospects. They had a lot of really young kids get unexpected playing time this year due to a lot of injuries on defense, so they should have some good depth.

I believe that SP had 25 Seniors on this team. They will be a top notch team as usual, but they are losing some playmakers for sure. I know they have a DT and a S that are sure fire D1 talents returning.

  12. I looked back in my records and saw the coach's selections and the Memphis Best of Preps are announced the week before Christmas.

The Commercial just did the pictures for the Soccer BOP within the past week, so they should be forthcoming as your timetable suggested.

  13. Coach Netherland coached his last game yesterday. It's been a pleasure watching him do his thing all these years. I was never a specific supporter of one of his schools but it was always easy to root for his squads when not playing the ones I was for. I don't think I'm alone in that and that says more about the man and the way he went about his business than anything I think.

I assume his last time coaching will be as an assistant next Saturday (Dec. 11th) at the Memphis area all-star game. Y'all come out.

Thanks for being a great leader to a lot of young men, coach. It appears to me that the Lord has used you in a great way. Enjoy.

Coach Netherland coached his last game for SG, but most he has most likely not coached his last game. He will end up coaching somewhere, even it is in another state.

It had to be a rough day for him yesterday. The Memphis paper said the other day that his wife was suffering from some health issues and found out Monday that she was having surgery this Friday. Said he coached and then immediately returned back to Memphis to be with her.

  14. Congrat indeed. The group is all ears to learn how one can achieve a score greater than 4.0 on a 4.0 scale. As an insider to Hutch, perhaps you can share the math for everyone to understand?

I am not sure how many private schools use the same system as Hutchison, but I would suspect that St. Mary's and at least a few others do as well. I believe in a public school you can earn beyond a 4.0 by way of Honors and AP classes. An A in one of these courses is weighted more heavily than an A in the regular version of that course. Basically, the harder the course, the more you are rewarded for taking the more challenging course work. I think the increased reward is only factored in if you make an A,B, or C.

Some of the school's do not have "regular" courses per say. The lowest form they offer is the equivalent (or sometimes) greater than the honors courses at some of the public (and probably a few of the other private schools as well) schools. Beyond that they have Advanced Honors or AP (not all courses have an AP level) which are of course the most challenging courses.

  15. Congratulations to the following schools as 2010 NSCAA Academic Award Winners!

To qualify for the award, the team must have a minimum GPA of 3.25 for the entire academic year. The team GPA is determined by adding every player's GPA and then dividing by the number of players.

The following Tennessee schools are double honorees as BOTH boys & girls programs are receiving honors:

    The Baylor School, Chattanooga

    Blackman, Murfreesboro

    Siegel, Murfreesboro

    Smyrna, Smyrna

The following Tennessee girls teams are receiving honors:

    The Baylor School, 3.57, Chattanooga

    Blackman, 3.97. Murfreesboro

    Hendersonville High, 3.28, Hendersonville

    Hutchison High School, 4.36, Memphis

    Independence High, 3.62, Thompson's Station

    Siegel, 3.48, Murfreesboro

    Smyrna, 3.58, Smyrna

    USJ, 3.43, Jackson

    6th highest in the country!

3rd consecutive year for Hutchison as well.

Congrats to everyone who made it.

  16. The Bridges Bowl is dead, CB...pick up a newspaper every now and then.

    Bridges Classic RIP

The Bridges is alive and well. They moved the games from the Liberty Bowl to MUS and CBHS (alternate years I believe). MUS/CBHS rotate playing Melrose/Millington and as stated before, it is a important part of Memphis HS football and the ushering in of the new season.

Great game by both teams. I kind of had a feeling BA was going to win this one big. BA looks like they might win it all this year. Good luck to BA in the rest of the playoffs.

As for MUS, I think they have a promising future ahead of them with a vast majority of the starters returning next year. Im also interested in seeing what MUS is going to do with their schedule now. Im curious if MUS is going to renew the games with SP, OB, and White station.

I am sure that they will try to keep those games or schedule games of that caliber. They are not known to duck tough opponents and I think that they believe it helps them get ready for the post season. They should be pretty stout next year with that talented Junior class. I think SP had 20 something seniors, so that should return to a more competitive game next year and the OB game has typically been a close one year in and year out.

I know they got hampered by a lot of defensive injuries this year, but that may actually pay off next year as a lot of younger kids got valuable experience this year because of the depth issues.

  18. While I have not seen MUS play this year, they definitely present challenges for the Brothers given their ability to throw the ball and flawlessly execute the 'Alston' system. Their schedule YTD pales by comparison to what the Brothers have successfully taken on, but they continue to show weekly improvement and may be peaking at just the right time. Holding SBA to just two touchdowns certainly raised the eyebrow. Although this is a road game, I would place the Owls as a 6-point favorite in this key West Region matchup.

I took in the CBHS/Briarcrest game last week and was quite impressed with the overall play of the Purple Wave. With the exception of DE Matt Murphy, no stellar position players like we have seen in prior years (e.g., Bates, Brucker, Ritt, Acosta, etc.), but a group of young men who work together as a team extremely well. The offense has much-needed balance led by gritty QB Powell and the defense is steady, although vulnerable to the pass as the corners lack size. Depth may be an issue this week as several key players had to be walked off the field against the Saints. Hopefully they will be able to play on Friday night?

As with all rivalries, and there is nothing better in West TN than MUS vs. CBHS, it will come down to which team makes the fewest mistakes and a lucky bounce/tip of the ball that changes the momentum of the game. May the men in stripes call a fair four quarters and the Lord watch over and protect all these fine young men who provide thousands of us with great entertainment every Friday night.

Both played Millington and White Station.

MUS' games vs South Panola and Olive Branch far outweigh the Brother's ECS/Clarksdale combo

Kingsbury (lost to Owls 42-7) beat G'Town (lost to Brother's 10-0) by 6

Melrose (lost to Brother's 13-6) beat East (lost to Owl's 35-8) by 3

SBA and BCS games are basically a wash at this point.

I would say that the strength of schedule edges tilts the way of the Owls. That said, it's a rivalry of historical significance in both Memphis and the State. Tradition will point to this being a close game.
