  5. In the example I gave, their was no stat-padding. As you suggested, only 1 goal was added to any player's stats, and this was the only game of the season the particular winning team was anywhere close to a double-digit outcome vs an opponent...so there was no intent whatsoever to 'run up the score', and as explained by several earlier, much was done to limit the score, while still continuing the game. There was no rifle nor no deer, and there was certainly no team "without a defense and without a goalie" as you claim. Team-B's defense and goalie worked very hard and very likely learned much and improved themselves for the next season. Interestingly, all of the players on the field for both teams were about the same age, and have had about the same number of years soccer experience since U-5. It's not like Team-B started playing soccer yesterday. You really shouldn't patronize their hard work, effort or talent. They had a 16-2-2 record going into that Regional game (better than their opponent), so they had had a very successful season themselves, in their own right. Hardly a team of inexperienced players unaccustomed to winning games as you make them out to be in your deer scenerio. Since Team-B is the largest AAA school in the state, from the largest metro area in the state, it's kinda difficult for you to persuade folks to buy off on your notion they don't have the opportunity to compete or that they are somehow less privileged. Nice try though. Had Team-A been a large AAA School playing a small single-A school from somewhere extremely rural like Jamestown or Darden, then there might be a significant disparity in opportunity. But remember, the TSSAA sets the Regional alignments, and match the teams, so it's not like Team-A went out hunting a weak school to play in the post-season anyway. If you seriously dislike games with scoring disparities, better stick with your 'golden goal' idea....at least it is consistent. It would have worked nicely for the Miami Hurricanes last season verses Virginia...they could have stopped the game and been declared the winner after their first field goal, and prevented them from running the score up to 57 on the poor underprivileged players from Virginia. :}
  6. Alrighty then. Change the sporting world rule books...we're all going to 'golden goal' games. First goal wins, everyone go home early. Whoop, Whoop, what fun that will be for all!!
  7. You're right. At the 2-0 mark, everyone should have gathered around one another inside the center circle, sat down on the ground, held hands, and sang kumb-ba-ya while the refs passed out chocolate bon-bons to eat for the 75 minutes remaining.
  8. Saw a good example of a high-scoring game tonight, but done about as gracefully as possible for the situation. In a Region Semifinal, Team-A defeated Team-B 11-0. (This was team-A's first double-digit win this season) - At the 3-0 mark, about 18 minutes into the game, Team-A pulled 8 starters out, leaving the goalie, 1 forward, and 1 midfielder. - 2nd string added 4 more goals by halftime. - At beginning of the 2nd half, the starters returned, but only played for 10 minutes, and scored one additional goal. - When the starters left this half, Team-A didn't refill their side, and played down 2 players. - 15 minutes into the half, the scoreboard 'malfunctioned' and was turned off. The announcer said that the Ref would keep the official time on the field. - 10 minutes after that, the Ref called the game. (about 15 minutes early) - Of the 11 goals, they were all scored by 11 different players, two of them being defenders, and 5 of them being from the subs. In this lopsided game, about as much sportsmanship that could be given from Team-A to Team-B was shown. Team-B played with much heart throughout, and their Keeper had many excellent saves, as well as many back-line blocks and clears. There were no fouls, and no parent, player, or coach dissent on any plays.

  10. In the case of an injury, the referee should stop the clock, until the injured person is removed from the field of play. The referee also has the discretion to determine if any time had rolled off the clock at the time of the injury, and return the clock's time to what the referee deems it was at the time of stoppage for the injury. Any injury shouldn't ever be allowed by a referee, to quote, "run out the clock".
  11. Franklin wins district 11-AAA 2-1 over RHS
  12. Soccer is not like basketball, where there is 'continuation' while the ball is in the air. Neither a corner kick, nor a direct kick, nor even a normal shot headed into an open goal has any 'rule-book' entry to allow it to continue if time expires before it gets there. In soccer, even if a corner kick is awarded, and time runs out before the kicker kicks it; time is out...the kick will never be taken. NFHS laws (TSSAA H.S. soccer's governing body) are much more strict with time-keeping than USSF/FIFA rules (travel soccer's governing body) are (which give the ref flexibility to 'add' extra time). The only time where stoppage time is given to extend time to allow a kick, is if a PK is awarded, and then time runs out. The laws allow for the PK to be taken. (and technically that isn't really an extension either, because when a PK is whistled, the clock is stopped immediately, and the clock doesn't run during a PK...so no time really needs to be added. It's just that the clock cannot 'run-out' once a PK has been called and the clock (with time left) is stopped. Many referees, if they are keeping the official time, might allow a ball in the air headed to the goal to continue, for the 'spirit of the game'; but by the letter of the law, they are not required to do so. (like in other sports) If the scoreboard is the official time, then it becomes an decision by the ref of whether or not the ball crossed the plane or not prior to the buzzer, since the ref cannot delay the buzzer's sounding.

  21. Makes no sense in AAA. Bearden didn't make the State Tournament last year, played no top-10 ranked AAA teams, every team it has played except 1 has a loosing record, and jumps from 9th to 1st after Germantown drops out of first, while Franklin, State Champion Finalist, stays stuck at #2 and beat FOUR top-10 ranked teams over the last 3 weeks (Riverdale #8 at the time, JP2 #3, Collierville #10, and Brentwood #3). Can't be on performance against top teams, nor strength of schedule, nor last season history/results. Sure being updefeated into the third week of the season in AAA would merit 'some' rise in the polls as other undefeated teams start to drop off, but a team jumping 9 positions (around other undefeated higher-ranked teams) is extreme in light of the normal considerations that should effect polling. It would be interesting to know what other criteria the pollsters used to merit Bearden's 9 position jump in the Eurosport AAA list.
  22. 1st half Brentwood pressured and had Franklin on their heels resulting in Brentwood's only score off a high DK from 20yrds out that the Franklin keeper punched up, hit the crossbar, and bounced straight down then into keeper's hands...it appeared that the ball didn't crossed the plane, however a goal was awarded nonetheless. Franklin struggled first half to get shots off, and Brentwood controlled the momentum going into halftime. Second half Franklin came out re-focused, and broke free with 3 scoring drives in a 9 minute stretch, all up the middle, through the defense, and into the net. Bruin keeper had a chance to save one of them, got two hands on it, but it spun through her hands nonethless, from a pretty much point-blank shot...tough ball to have saved regardless. By their 2nd and 3rd goal, the momentum swung pretty hard towards Franklin, and they mostly just played keep-away in the high corners for the last 15 minutes of the game. Good match, well reffed this year, and less fouls and emotional play than you'd normally expect from this rivalry. Would have been a cardless game, but towards the end after things were pretty much settled and it was in the books, a couple of players had a light 'tangle' near the mid sideline, which could have been let go and played on, but the ref chose to do a double-yellow.
