  1. Scotty Smith would make a great head coach at McMinn County. He knows region 2-5A very well, being a coordinator for the past eight years at Soddy Daisy. He was the DC of the Year twice. Very disciplined and great x and o man. He would bring alot of experience to the table and would not stay for a few years and leave. He would be in it for the long haul. He is very loyal and is one of the hardest working coaches in the business. Most of all, he is a great person with high morals. McMinn County would not go wrong with hiring him. He is the best man for the job! He deserves a shot. He has paid his dues as an assistant. Scotty was in the running for the job when Daughtery got it. Don't know much about the others, except Bennett. Great person and very good coach. Just not sure if he has the experience or has been part of a program with alot of success as a coach. Played with him at CN, so he has been around a program with winning traditions as a player, but not sure about as a coach. The others I do not know. Good luck McMinn County!
  2. They need to look at an assistant coach in the Chattanooga area. I believe he has been there for about 7 or 8 years, the first 5 or 6 as a defensive coordinator with the past year as the offensive coordinator. He was the Region DC of the year once or twice for what some say is the toughest region in the state. He is a great defensive coach who has some head coaching experience. I believe he was in the running for the job when Mullinax retired. He would have a very disciplined program.
  3. Not too sure of all the details, but I do know they hosted the sub-state game and then got beat in the first round by Austin-East, couldn't handle the pressure on the ball. That City team was very good, but I'm sure Tyner would have had to beat them in the Region Championship to host the Sub-State. I believe that Region Championship was played at Cleveland State. As far as Hinton and AJ, they were great football players playing basketball. AJ was more of a trash man and played real good defense. Rory shot the ball well when he got hot and played good solid defense. You are right in the fact that we don't need to worry about the past, just who will be the man for the future.
  4. Alot of those kids on the 96'-97' team played JV the year before as freshman and sophomores. Long, Dickerson, Strickland, Snowbird, etc. were that JV team and went 14-2 with the only losses coming to Brainerd. Cal did not even play that year. AJ, McCutchison, and Hinton were really the only ones that played varsity for Thompson in 95'-96. Thompson did a good job with fundamentals, but I also think he had alot more talent than did Dillard and achieved less. Dillard probably did reap from the past development, but that usually always happens at any level. I Still feel like whoever gets this job could build a great program. Good luck in the search!
  5. I am sure there are some good coaches out there that would be interested in this job. It is a magnet school, so there would not be as many discipline problems. Leroy is a very good coach who has coached some very good players. Could he win at Tyner? Without a doubt! As far as Tyner not beating him when he was at City, I am pretty sure they did the first year Dillard came back. That year Tyner went to the State Tournament, '96-'97, after hosting a Sub-State game. That team was very good with Kevin Cal, Rory Hinton, Anthony Jones, Gary Long, etc. That was the same year the lost in the State Finals to Melrose in football. They had some great athletes at that time. Not sure what they have now, but they have had some great ones come through there.
  6. Who is the coach thompson you are talking about? Is it the same one that coached in the mid 90's between dillard resigning and dillard coming back. If so, where is he at now?
  7. The kid from Red Bank, Dominique McDuffie, had a 360 against Ooltewah last week. Very legit.
  8. The Darin Slack QB/WR camp will be at Red Bank High School in Chattanooga on June 22-23. The QB part will be run by Darin Slack, and the WR part will be run by former Florida St. All-American, Kez McCorvy. This is a great camp for both positions. You can go to www.quarterbackacademy.com to register.
  9. Scotty Smith, an assistant at Soddy Daisy. He was the Defensive Coordinator of the year a couple of years for their region, the latest coming in Weathers first year at SD. He would be a great hire at either school.
  10. Lockerby would be the best choice of the two. Alot more experience and strong ties to the area. Swallows would not be a bad choice if Lockerby was not interested. They need the experience of Lockerby at WV to stablize the program. He has all the connections at the next level and would bring alot of enthusiasm to the program. Who would not want a former I-AA Defensive Coordinator as their head coach? He should be the choice and I hope he gets the chance.
  11. If there is a double whistle, the two referees are suppose to make eye contact and hold off on any call until they determine which one will take it. Most of the time one of the officials will back off and let the other make the call. I would asssume that both of them came in quick to make the call. Sometimes referees are quick to pull the trigger with the call and this is what you get. It is embarrassing to the officials when this happens. They did do the right thing by reporting both fouls and going to the posession arrow. I promise you, it won't happen again from those two same officials.
  12. Being a current coach and former referee, I understand both sides. As a ref, it is very difficult to be perfect in all your calls. You are going to miss many during a night. But as it was stated before, if you hustle and are in position to make the calls, coaches will get over a bad call. As a coach now, it is very difficult to keep my mouth shut when the Points of Emphasis articles are being ignored. When the state tells the coaches that shirt tales are to be kept in or the player will be replaced, or if a player impedes progress of play by delaying the game for touching the ball after a scored basket it is a warning for all infractions and the next one will be a Technical Foul, and the referees are not enforcing these, I do have a problem with that. Some associations are enforcing these, most are not. The Tri-Cities association have not enforced either in the last two weeks after playing in two tournaments up there. After asking an official last night, in another association, about delay of game warning for touching the ball after a made basket, his response was 'What are you talking about coach'? Obviously he was not going to enforce it. The other big problem I have is a block / charge no call. If a there is contact and bodies hit the floor, it is either a block or a charge. If I am teaching my players to stay in there for the contact, and there is a 'no call', my players are wondering why they are doing what their coach is telling them to do. The referees do have a thankless job. I know, I've been there. If they make a bad call, oh well, they are human. They should at least hustle up and down the floor, and enforce the rules of the game though.
  13. Ted Lockerby would be a great choice. He is an outstanding coach and has had a good bit of success as the Defensive Coordinator at Tech. This would be the logical choice. If Mullinax is the one, how long will he be there? I really think WV needs a younger coach who will establish that program. WV has great athletes. They just need a system in place, both offensively and defensively. Another person that would be very good for the job is an assistant at a Chattanooga area school. He has been the Defensive Coordinator of the year two years, in one of the toughest regions in the state. Good luck in the search from the Region 4-4A three time champs.
  14. It is not going to get any better. From what the TSSAA is proposing for next year, basketball practice will start two weeks earlier, middle of October, instead of first week of November. If you do have a successful football program next year, those athletes that play both will miss up to 5 or 6 weeks of basketball, depending on how far you go into the playoffs. The games will not start sooner, just practice. There are alot of changes going to be made that will affect all sports. As an assistant football and assistant basketball coach, this not only works on the kids, but also the coaches.
  15. I could see this Boyd Buchanan team make a serious run in the playoffs. It is a definite possiblity for them to make it to the third round, facing Tyner again. If they could pull off a second win against the Rams, then facing Alcoa in the Semi-Finals could happen. This is a very good football team that has played the toughest non-region schedule in the state. CPA-8-2, South Pitt - 9-1, Baylor - 8-2, Fulton - 9-1, Red Bank - 10-0, and Cookeville - 6-4. A combined record of 50-10. Most of these teams will make a serious run at state titles as well. I think it would be great for Boyd Buchanan to make it to the finals with a 7-7 record and finish at 8-7 with a state championship. It is not Boyd Buchanans fault for this, it is the TSSAA. Too many Divisions and Regions. It's all about the money. They make 50% off the top from every playoff game. Good luck to the Bucs and the coaching staff. You are now reaping the benefits of a very tuff non-region schedule.
  16. Thanks to all the people who were involved with the Darin Slack Quarterback Camp at Soddy Daisy High School this weekend. It was a great success and we appreciate all those who attended. We had 51 quarterbacks, and several coaches. I hope those who attended felt it was benificial. Can't wait until next year. Good luck on the upcoming season and remember to get first downs.
  17. Soddy Daisy High School Girl's Varsity Basketball is looking for games to fill their schedule. These are dates for the girls team only. For more information on dates, call Fred Dallava at 423-332-8828 ext. 3244.
  18. Soddy Daisy will hold its second annual JV Girls' Basketball Tournament on Dec. 20-22. For more information, call Fred Dallava at 423-332-8824 ext. 3244, or Kraig Campbell at 423-332-8828 ext. 3306.
  19. I think Grant Swallows would be the obvious choice. He is already there and, even though some might think he is too young to be a head coach, you won't find a better coach that will teach fundamentals and will have his teams mentally prepared. Good luck to LA.
  20. The Darin Slack Quarterback Academy will be held at Soddy Daisy High School on June 23 - 24. This is one of the best QB camps in the country. This will be the third year it has been held at Soddy Daisy High School, which is in Chattanooga. The camp is for 7th - 12th grades. Go to www.quarterbackacademy.com for more information. The Darin Slack QB Academy is out of the Orlando, Florida area and is run by Darin Slack who was an All-American record setter for the University of Central Florida in the mid 80's. Excellent camp that draws players from Oklahoma to South Carolina.
  21. I worked with Chris at TTU and spoke with him at the S. Pitt and MC basketball game a couple of weeks ago. He did express an interest in getting away from Canada and said he had some things in going on. I would really like to see him get back to the Chattanooga area. He would get the most out of SC, if they could pay him.
  22. Chris Jones is the D Line and DC for the Montreal Allouettes. He has been there for three or four years. He was the D Line coach at Tenn. Tech before going to the CFL. He would do wonders at Sequatchie County. Very good coach with alot of experience at all levels. Was one time at North Jackson, AL. I hope if he is interested he gets a legit shot. Good Luck to all the applicants.
  23. The Darin Slack QB Academy is one of the best in the country. A lot of one on one with Darin Slack. It is held at different high schools throughout the country. The camp is held at Soddy Daisy High School, which is the only one in Tennessee. You can check out the website www.quarterbackacademy.com to see more information. Very, very good.
  24. from a coaches stand point in the same region, he is by far the best high school running back I have ever seen in 12 years as a coach. He goes 100% every play. He has a passion and a desire that shows. It would not surprise me if he does get passed up by the big schools, but he can definitely play. He is going to make some college very proud he is part of their program. He seems to be a class act and leads by his example on the field. He is very deserving of the Mr. Football 5A award. Good luck in the playoffs and into your college career from Soddy Daisy.
