  1. Two or Three. Very good game from him as he gaurded their top scorer as well. Ashley had 27 I think.
  2. The Darin Slack Quarterback Academy will once again be at Red Bank High School on June 16 and 17. This will be the 7th year it has been in Chattanooga. This the best QB camp in the country! Coach Slack has a great staff that travels all over the country from January til August. If you want a true QB camp that TEACHES the mechanics and leadership, this is the one you want to attend. Go to fbcoach4@yahoo.com or 423-413-2577 for further information.
  3. I would like to see Scotty Smith get his shot. He would do a great job. Most of the guys on staff either has coached with him or played for him when he was previously there. He would give the program some stability, not looking to go elsewhere. His credentials speak for themselves.
  4. We will be hosting the Darin Slack Quarterback Academy at Red Bank High School in Chattanooga on June 19-20. This is the best QB camp in the nation! Darin Slack and his staff do a wonderful job of TEACHING fundamentals, not just letting kids get reps. This camp does give them plenty of reps, but the basis is to correct fundamentals. It is an eye opener to players and coaches. It is never too late to learn the most biomechanically sound way to throw. It is also a great Leadership camp as well. This will be the 6th year we will be hosting this camp in the Chattanooga area. Darin has produced numerous college QBs as well as two NFL QBs in Matt Flynn, LSU, (Green Bay) and Billy Farris (newly drafted Cincinatti Bengals) out of Colorado State. If you want your QB to learn how to self-correct, to become a better leader, and to understand WHY he does something, you need to attend a Darin Slack Quarteback Academy camp. Go to www.quarterbackacademy.com to get registered. You will not be disappointed!
  5. Smith from Walker Valley would be an excellent choice. Would bring in alot of discipline. He has been one of the best assistants in the Chattanooga area for a number of years. Defensive coach of the year in two different Regions in the area.
  6. Pheobe Wright went to Red Bank High School.
  7. Another top assistant coach that should be looked at is Scotty Smith - the Defensive Coordinator at Walker Valley. He had a great performance against Cleveland this year. He was named DC of the year in Region 4-4A. Has also been the DC of the year a couple of times in Region 2-5A when he was at Soddy Daisy. Great coach and a great man!
  8. As far as the block/charge delays, the refs are suppose to make eye contact if they have a double whistle. The play is usually leaving one ref's area into another ref's area and you get both of them blowing their whistle. If they delay the call, it is to make sure one ref does not have a block, the other have a charge, and to see which one is taking the call. Some refs like to make a quick call and if both do so, you could have both calls made, in which both calls are reported. If this happens, it looks alot worse than a minor delay in making the call.
  9. FNL - I don't think I am building anybody up, just giving you some background information about Coach Parker. Some of you seem like you did not know where he came from or what he had achieved before showing up at Portland. He did a very good job at Boyd with what he had to work with. Given time, I feel he can do the same at Portland. Your right, it might take 7, 8, 10 years before Portland is where they want to be, but I promise you, the people at Boyd never believed that they would be winning District and Region Championships, going to Sub-State in BASEBALL. Boyd was a huge basketball school in the mid 80's to mid 90's. Then it turned into, and still is, a huge football school. Baseball was actually the fifth sport considered there with soccer and softball. Baseball there got no respect, and yes Jimmy boy made them into a very respectable BASEBALL program throughout the Chattanooga area. Given time, he will be able to do what he did for Boyd at Portland. He is passionate about the sport and only wants the best for Portland. And no I'm not his daddy. I am however, a good friend of his in Chattanooga that coaches at a Public school. I respect what he did for Boyd. You should not hate because he has guys that will support him and go to bat for him. He is a great guy, you might want to get to know him. Good Luck Portland Panthers!
  10. Got to coach against him last season in the state tournament semi-finals where he got a quiet 30 on the night. Very smooth and does not get rattled. Can take over a game in a heartbeat. Have not seen a better guard than him. I am sure he has improved his game since then. By far the best guard in the state. It will be interesting to see where he ends up.
  11. I don't think I said he played them in the past. I said he gave them ample chances to prove themselves. Unfortantly in this case, he had younger kids that could produce, and older ones that could not and made a change, which may have cost him his job. No excuse. Just facts. I also know it can happen at the public schools as well, but not as much. I see parents trying to do it to me every day. Good coaches don't allow this to happen. That is why you see so many kids transfering to other schools so much now, if the administration stands behind their coaches. It is also why you see coaches not stay at places as long now days as the did in the past. Where is the loyalty to the coaches? I see kids leaving us every year because of this very reason. It really doesn't matter that he was winning in a weak single A district. You can't blame him for that, they were winning. If you saw where he brought the BBS program from, you would appreciate what he did for that school. Most people do, some don't, which is ashame. As a BBS alum, I was very disappointed that we let a great Christian man go because of the obvious reasons. I would have loved for my son to play for him. It is extremely hard to get quality Christian men to teach and coach in a Christian school because they can't compare to public school pay. When you have one that had dedicated his teaching and coaching career to that, and be hit between the eyes, but expected to stay there to coach football and teach, it is a hard pill to swallow. Another thing, never question Parker's ethics. He is as fair and honest of a person you will ever meet and will give every kid the opportunity to prove himself. If the kid can't perform, he is not afraid to make changes. Also, make sure you know the man before you make a comment about his ethics. He is one of the greatest Christian men I know. Favoritism or playing certain kids because of their status will not happen. They will have to prove themselves worthy to be on the field. Portland is headed in the right direction. Let's give Coach Parker a chance before you start questioning him. The wins will come, maybe sooner than later, but what kind of work ethic and character is going to instill in these young men. That is the most important thing. Good luck to Portland and Coach Parker.
  12. My guess, which is a pretty sound guess, is that he did not play the right kids at the private school and money talks in that environment. JP gives kids ample chances to prove themselves and did in this case. Numbers don't lie, and if kids can't produce, or play the way he expects them to by doing his way, kids playing time will dwindle. Happened in this case and cost him his job. Why would they want him to stay on as a football coach and math teacher, but not as the head baseball coach if he beat the likes of Science Hill? Not really sure, but makes sense though if the above statement is true.
  13. jimmy parker will be able to bring alot of experience and enthusiasm to the program. He built the Boyd Buchanan program into one that would compete with anyone in the state. Before he took over the Boyd program, they had never really been competitive, especially against higher classifications. Boyd beat Science Hill and Soddy Daisy last year. The best thing about jp is he will hold the players accountable and will teach them how to become young men. Coming back to Portland has been his dream job. If the players will buy into his program, and the outsiders stay out, he will be able to put together a competitive program. Good luck!!!
  14. Bring it to Chattanooga. Finley Stadium would be a great place to have it. Chattanooga has alot to offer as far as attractions with Rock City, Ruby Falls, the Aquarium, etc. The city already host the IAA Championship, so why not the State Championships. The only negative is the travel for the Memphis schools.
  15. There will be a very good WR camp on June 20-21 at Red Bank High School in Chattanooga, put on by the Darin Slack Football Academy from Orlando, Florida. This camp will be in conjuction with a QB camp and OL camp. This will be the first time the WR camp will be held in Chattanooga but the QB camp has been there for the past 5 years. For more information, go to www.quarterbackacademy.com.
  16. The best QB camp in the nation!! Slack is very one on one with each kid and does a wonderful job explaining mechanics and the fundamentals. If you need any information on these camps, go to www.quarterbackacademy.com. The camp at Chattanooga Red Bank will also have the youth QB camp, WR camp, and OL camp. You can call Kraig Campbell - RBHS Offensive Coordinator/DSQBA Instructor, at 423-413-2577 for any information as well. We would love to see you in Chattanooga on June 20-21.
  17. I echo zonepirate with the Darin Slack QB Academy. He has several camps from Dec. to Feb. Some of his current QBs in training are the QBs from Jenks H.S., Oklahoma. Also, Matt Flynn (LSU), Matt Arnete(spelling?) from Hillsboro, QB from Pearl-Cohn who has committed to Kentucky, Jake Ledbetter (Chattanooga Red Bank) who just surpassed 5,000 career yards, Gary Orr (Austin Peay). LSU Offensive Coordinator has stated how impressed he is with Slack and his ability to teach fundamentals and teach kids how to self-correct. Great camps!!! We will have the DSQBA once again be in Chattanooga in late June. Make plans to attend that camp as it is in it's 5th year in the Chattanooga area. You will not be disappointed in the DSQBA. Good luck to all the playoff bound teams.
  18. As an alumnus of Boyd and a coach for Red Bank, I was very impressed with Boyd. They did a great job defending our best run play. We had to make adjustments at halftime to overcome that. Boyd will do a great job the rest of the season and hopefully be back to back region champions. We at Red Bank respect Boyd Buchanan and there coaching staff tremendously. Boyd is very disciplined and they do things right! Grant and the rest of the staff are great people. Why did we keep our starters in the whole game? The game could have swung in Boyd's way like you have said with a couple of calls. Is 23 points enough? You never know. Alot of our second team guys played alot throughout the game. A couple of freshman played early in the first quarter (WR and DL). Boyd is a very good football team and nothing can be taken for granted when you play them. I have witnessed them score alot of points in the 4th quarter before. Coach Fant does a great job! Boyd played us better and tougher than anyone else we have played so far. I am kind of taken back that you think the RB coaches are classless. Just ask the coaches at Walker Valley after we took a knee at the 1 yard line up 42-7 with our second team. After talking with several of the coaches on Boyd's staff, I don't think they feel that we should have done anything different. The game was never out of hand. Boyd moved the ball on us all night long. They just sputtered inside the redzone. Most people that feel that way probably are outside of the program and do not see it form a coaches standpoint. We at Red Bank respect Boyd Buchanan and the people there. From a BBS alum, good luck the rest of the season! Hopefully BBS, and we at Red Bank, will represent the Chattanooga area well in the playoffs. Good luck this week against Bledsoe, we will have our hands full with Brainerd.
  19. Thanks for your attendence at the camp. It was a great success and the kids really worked hard to make themselves better. There were some very good quarterbacks at this camp. We had about five or six kids from NC, MS, GA, and AL. We also had one kid from Florida, and one from Colorado, as well as a slew from Tennessee. Arent has been with Slack for several years now. He has great potential. Hopefully, we can continue the success of this camp for years to come. It has been in Chattanooga for the past four years, and is the only camp of this caliber in Tennessee. For those who attended, thank you and pass along the truth about this camp and how Coach Slack and his philosophy can change a quarterback for the good. For those who are still not sure, just watch Matt Flynn from LSU excell as he becomes the starter, as well as Tim Couch (former UK) make his way back to into the league after two major surgeries on his arm/shoulder. These two have been working with Slack and will be great testiments to his program. Thanks again and we hope to see you back next summer! 20. If that is true that Cagle will be named the head coach because of his ties to McMinn Co, what will happen in 3-4 years if he struggles and does not have the type of season the community and administration expect? Will he be let go, or will he be given chance after chance? This can run a program in the ground! Wanting to make sure the hometown guy gets his chance. Not a great situation if he fails. This would be different if he was an established head coach somewhere else and coming back to take over. But for it to be his first head coaching gig, it could be ugly. I am sure he could do a great job, but that is alot of pressure for a young coach, especially at the 5A level. This is the reason that I think they need to go outside of the system to hire somebody. Don't forget, Scotty Smith has alot to offer somebody. You past on him once before, I would not do it again. He is the man for the job! I agree that they need to hire the best football coach, and then worry about his teaching spot. Look at how Georgia schools do it. They hire the best coach, and then work the teaching position. Most teachers are certified in more than one subject, so they could look at moving teachers around. Most teachers though are not willing to do that. Good Luck in your search! Again, Scotty Smith!!!
  21. Coach Smith, I'm sure, would be taking a pay cut as well. Hamilton Co. assistant football supplement is very good, 15%. Seems to me that McMinn would want to have someone in place pretty soon. There is only a few weeks left in the school year. It they wait much longer, it will be hard for any coach to come in and get thing rolling. Good thing this is not next year where football will not have the month of June to use per TSSAA. Hopefully they will make their decision soon. I still think Smith is the man for the job.
  22. That is the very reason I think they should go outside to get a coach. I think the community might be too much of an influence in some situations. Sometimes that can be a problem in a program. The coaches need to be able to come in without any preconceived ideals as far as players, assistant coaches, community support, administration support, etc. Sometimes coaches feel pressured to play kids or do things because of the good ol' boy system. I know Brad Bennett is a great coach and would do a fantastic job, and if Smith does not get it, I hope he does, but how much will the friends of the program influence him on some decisions as opposed to someone with no ties to anybody in McMinn County. Why did he leave and go to Bradley County to begin with? To coach with John Allen? Money? Not sure. I do know that McMinn pasted up on Scotty Smith before and that move did not get them anywhere. Your lucky Scotty Smith is still available and has shown interest, not many coaches who get passed over would apply a few years later for the same job. If your worried about longevity, look at how long Smith has been at Soddy Daisy. He has had opportunity to move on, but has stayed loyal to SD because of the realationships he has made there with his players, as well as coaching staff and faculty staff. Scotty Smith would do McMinn County proud. Maybe they need to get Mullinax in on the search committee. Smith's defenses gave Mullinax's wing-t offense fits, although we did steal alot from Mullinax when we ran the wing-t and I was the OC.
  23. Smith was the head coach at Jackson County for a couple of years before he ended up at Soddy Daisy. Jackson County is not the best place to get your first head coaching deal. Not many of the upper cumberland area schools are successful, especially the small ones. He has been successful though as a coordinator, and we all know assistants don't get as much credit as they deserve. He was very instrumental in the success Soddy Daisy has had over the past eight years. Even though Soddy Daisy struggled this past season, they have been very successful in Smith's tenure as the Defensive Coordinator. He has a great understanding of the Region opponents. I had the pleasure of coaching with him for four years as the Offensive Coordinator, and he is the best high school DC I have worked with. He made me a much better OC, in which made us a better team. Just because someone did not have alot of success ten years ago as a head coach, does not mean he cannot handle the job now. He will be the first to tell you he has a better understanding of how to run a program. The difference in Jackson County and McMinn County is the support of the community. McMinn County wants a successful football program, Jackson County just wanted a successful girls basketball program. He is certified in Business and does a fantastic job in the classroom.
  24. I agree with houndorr. Smith probably is the most experience coach listed. He has been aound some very good coaches in his coaching career, as well as playing days. Played for Oak Ridge back in the day, walked on at Alabama with Bear Bryant, Miss. St. head coach, Croom was his position coach at Alabama, was an Assistant for Mike McIntyer at UT-Martin (most recently was an assistant for Dallas Cowboys). Smith has the pedigree and should not be passed up. It might be good if McMinn brought in someone with no ties to the program. I do think Bennett would do a great job there, but he has already been there and left. Why would you hire someone who left to begin with. Scotty Smith is too good of a coach, and person, not to be highly considered for the job. Not sure why anyone would not want him to coach and mentor their kids. Houndorr, shoot me an email.
