I agree that LA will be very tough next year. They do have alot of returning starters from last year and loads of experience. I wonder about their off-season program since they didn't compete in the weight lifting competition. To be great in this region you have to be fast AND strong. Portland and Smith County are also returning alot of starters. Should be an interesting region and season. I also agree with the playoff comment. It is ridiculous.
Smith County defeated Cannon County 11-2 I think. From what I hear, SC played a good game both offensively and defensively. Anyone know anything else, please let us know.
Who are some of the best players in the district? Pitchers, hitters, fielders, etc. Do you think there is alot of parity or is there a dominant team or two?
Sorry for my incorrect info. But yes it was a great day of competition. POrtland has a very strong team. I'm probably wrong again but I believe they placed in every weight class but one. Although, it didn't look like to me that they had a single player under 141lbs.
Ok, so we're Owlettes in basketball, volleyball, and soccer but we're the Lady Owls in softball. Now I got it, maybe. It's still Owlettes to me. SORRY!!!!
I believe that's pretty standard for most high schools. I like to incorporate a little knowledge in there along with the physical training. I love smart players. Makes your job much easier in the season if they fully understand the terminology and their responsibilities. It also helps with the young guys if you teach them the different defensive fronts and coverages (what they look like), and also formations, for obvious reasons. We believe that smarter football players usually make better football players.
I'm not sure on most of them. I know the highest clean went to Michael Wilmore from Smith County. I think it was 275. The highest bench was a kid from Portland around 320, 325, somewhere around there. Denny from Smith County could've gotten more on his power clean but chose not to because he had already won his class and was saving himself for bench. He probably would've beaten Wilmore. I'll try to get a list of the winners and their lifts for you.
I believe Dodgen is a good coach as well and I believe he has two really good assistants as well. That does help; especially when you're talking about the Freshmen and JV teams. That is a big help in getting a program going and continuing a program's success.
Just to let anyone who's interested know, Portland cleaned house with 120 something points. Smith County came in second with 57.5 and Trousdale in third with 32.5. I believe that is correct. Overall I thought it was a good day and there was lots of good competition. Congratulations to all who represesnted their school as lifters and lots of congratulations to those who placed or won their class.
Better look out for us this year. We will win the district and the region. Just kidding. I think we'll be pretty good but I don't know how good just yet.
Hey, anything can happen and I don't believe it would come as too big a shock to most people. We'll just have to wait and see. Anyway, good luck Friday night. I've got a feeling you're gonna need it.
You're not done yet Owlettes so keep coming out and playing hard. Have fun and just play your game, as a team, and with alot of intensity and intelligence. You understand now that you can play with anyone in the state and how much every possession means in a basketball game. Good luck!!!!!!!!!! You can do it!!!!!!
I've got to go with SC. They are riding in with more confidence and momentum in a long, long time. They are are playing great team ball and the Seniors are stepping up at the right time.
