  8. I've been working on a reply to this thread. It's a great topic, so I'll just post what I have to this point. Wrestling creates many emotions and a high percentage of youth are unable to process most of them. Those with a high level of aggression avoid a lot of these emotions, because they have success very early in competition. I feel the parents need to have a good read on their kid's ability to deal with powerful feelings. I've seen kids cry throughout matches they were winning. It's overwhelming. So even given a young kid's physical ability for wrestling, if he cannot process these emotions, many of which may be brand new to him, there's a good chance he'll turn away from the sport if he doesn't have the positive/appropriate support from his parents and coaches. My oldest son would get upset at the Madden football video game because the coded announcers would say, "Boy, that was a stupid play call by the coach." I knew he could be sensitive, so I brought him into wrestling slowly. Around 3rd grade, I started taking him to club practice once a week and compete only in a couple tourneys the entire season. I did this for a few years, until he began developing more mature processing skills. As for learning the sport, he lost a lot of matches during these years. However, I knew puberty was the great equalizer and just encouraged along the way to just enjoy the battle and to learn the techniques. Now, he loves it and is enjoying some success. My youngest son is a different creature. He’s required a completely different approach. Jury is still out, but he seems to be more competitive and more interested in the sport. -TH

  11. I imagine the reason is related to transportation for HS practice. Not all 8th graders would have access to transportation. Public school systems would be expected/pressured to provide the service, which would be added expenses and logistically difficult for some school systems. So, the rule allowing 8th graders to compete up if MS and HS share facilities appears to be a compromise. Given institutions like the TSSAA (see also NCAA) paint every issue with one broad brush, small towns with MS & HS on different campuses would not get special consideration. If there are some instances, I'm not aware of any. -TH
  12. Eli was nasty slick; definitely gave up muscle weight. Boykin kept saying "Gosh, he's so good" from the bench during every match. -TH
  13. Dendy did not participate. He had to pull out. -TH
  14. Hicks and King went 8-0 as well. GOLD (8-0) T.J. Hicks @ 106/113 Brock Herring @ 132 Eli King @ 145 Matt Sells @ 160 Nick Boykin @ 285 SILVER (7-1) Trey Hicks @ 98 Knox Fuller @ 126 Trevor Rippy @ 138 (lacerated eyelid & face mask made last 3 matches additionally tough) Christian Salter @ 145 (alternate for Montana-2) Nathan Walling @ 182 BRONZE (6-2) N/A COPPER (5-3) Ryan McElhaney @ 120 Austin Plumlee @ 120 (alternate for Iowa All-Stars) Caleb Adkins @ 152 Chad Kizer @ 170 Josh Ortiz-Derrick @ 195 Truman Ross @ 220 Of the 17 team members, 16 earned AA honors between gold, silver, & copper. Sean Sesnan's only losses were when we bumped him to 113. He was undefeated at 106. Big HEART that guy! The guys seemed like they'd been teammates forever. Great chemistry. Several of them were on our MS TeamTN Red and Blue teams two years ago for the AAU National Duals. I can say the same about us coaches. Really enjoyed coaching with Jeff & Ben. Good times. "Conditioning is a weapon." --- Ben Smith I learned plenty. Kudos to Don Barnett & John Salter. Great organizers. They know what you need before you ask. Top shelf professionals. Although, Don did break my readers with his mat-side horseplay. LOL! -TH

  16. Who knows, probably same as everyone else who wants it moved. Just sayin' mad moms get things done.
  17. The best route now for having states moved to a new venue is wrestling moms. If they take interest, God help the TSSAA. Worse than Martin Luther and The Reformation. MAAC ~ Moms Against Ag Center There. -TH
  18. Thomas Sell is very, very sick right now. Diagnosed w/ strep Friday then the flu on Saturday. Hate it for him.
  19. For those who were intending on coming to watch the semi-finals @ 2:30 PM and finals @ 4:30 PM, be aware, everything will move up. Scratches et al have reduced first round matches. It's very likely semi-finals will be as early as 1:15 PM w/ the 1st/3rd place matches approx. 4:30 PM. Grapple on! -TH

  22. Any TSSAA school, public or private, may use 8th graders on varsity teams as long as they share the same campus. Signal Mountain HS, for example, can and has used 8th graders. Certain sports see scenarios where it's possible, like wrestling with the 106 lb. class. -TH
  23. 2010 - 9 2011 - 6 2012 - 6 2013 - 5 2014 - 6 No idea how many before 2010. Some of the local schools, like Red Bank, pulled out after 2010. FR & MBA's last year of participation was also 2010. -TH
