  1. Weather for tonight - rain ends this morning. Temp at kickoff 52 degrees, dropping to 47 by 10 PM. This is football weather. Time to get out the UnderArmor and the blankets. I think a propane heater might be in order tonight.
  2. Y'all have a couple of good eating places in Dyersburg. I partook of that Chinese buffet last trip. It was more appetizing than the Covington loss to Dyersburg. That part was hard to swallow.
  3. The Daily Memphian says: https://dailymemphian.com/subscriber/section/sportshigh-school-sports/article/39764/tssaa-second-round-football-playoff-preview-memphis-area Class 3A (4) Ripley (7-4) at (2) Covington (9-2) The rundown: Ripley scored in the final two minutes to upset injury-riddled Sheffield last week, 12-8. Covington, meanwhile, put up 70 points against Hamilton — not an easy thing to do, especially considering the running clocks in the high school game. The Chargers have won eight in a row and their run game, led by Mr. Football semifinalist Skylan Smith, is clicking. Covington shut out Ripley, 36-0, Oct. 20, and with the way J.R. Kirby’s men are playing, a similar result could be on the cards.
  4. From the Daily Memphian: https://dailymemphian.com/subscriber/section/sportshigh-school-sports/article/39764/tssaa-second-round-football-playoff-preview-memphis-area (2) Millington Central (9-2) at (1) Brownsville Haywood (9-2) The rundown: Brownsville is a tough trip for visiting teams; the Tomcats have won 14 of their last 16 home games dating back to the start of the 2022 season. The Trojans, however, are blessed to have an experienced — and not to mention talented — on-field leader in quarterback McCoy Pugh, who was outstanding in last week’s victory over Crockett County.
  5. Nice post, @stacmot. I know you are not that old, but you and I are old enough to impress some of these younger folks if they know our exact ages. Again, I'm pulling for your Tomcats to go all the way to State.
  6. The Commercial Appeal has this on the game: https://www.commercialappeal.com/story/sports/high-school/2023/11/08/tennessee-high-school-football-playoffs-tssaa-2023-memphis-predictions/71349575007/ Ripley (7-4) at Covington (9-2) When: 7 p.m., Friday Covington's Skylan Smith rushed for 111 yards and had three total touchdowns in a 70-6 win over Hamilton in the first round. Covington beat Ripley 36-0 in Week 10 with Smith rushing for 276 yards and three touchdowns. He should have another big game and send Covington to the quarterfinals. Wilcox’s pick: Covington 41, Ripley 6
  7. But you usually put pretty good stuff on here. I did catch a thread recently where you were calling a guy trailer trash (in a subtle way, of course). We do pray “Forgive us our trespasses” don’t we? Glad to see you posting on here. I went back and viewed the Ripley game again last night. They shut us out in the first quarter. We got to the 10 yard line going in, they held, and we missed a field goal. Second offensive possession, we fumbled the ball back to them. We could not score on their D until the 2nd quarter. But it was 17-0 at the half. Our D kept them from getting close to the end zone, but they did pick up some first downs, and moved the ball on us at times. I expect them to come in thinking they can play with us.
  8. I have the correct figures from the roster for Dyersburg listed on the TSSAA website. According to the TSSAA roster, Dyersburg has 76 players. The breakdown by classes turns out to be: Freshman 18 Sophomores 24 Junior 10 Senior 24 So, it appears that your guy @tennesseeannouncer quoted a correct total for the freshman and sophomore classes of 18 + 24 = 42. This is a great number. You claim only a couple of freshmen dress. I’m just guessing, but I’ve seen this happen before - once the freshman or JV season is over, some coaches dress the entire roster so that they all get the playoff experience. I’m only messing with you guys to get accurate stuff on here. My Covington squad only has 62 on the roster. Congratulations on the great young squad y’all have coming along.
  9. Well, wait a minute. So, Dyersburg dressed 42 freshman and sophomores. And you say that only a couple (that’s two) freshman dress out. That means 42 dressed less two freshman. I’m to believe that Dyersburg dressed 40 sophomores? Listen, I was born at night, but I wasn’t born last night. I’m not buying that.
  10. Well, y’all have a lot of young talent coming up then. That’s an average of 21 in those two classes. Congratulations.
  11. So, if that’s freshmen, sophomore, and juniors, the three classes dressed an average of 14 per class. Do I understand that correctly? If so, those are not very big classes.
  12. I will definitely do that. I’m sure they will write about the game at some point.
  13. We don’t mind if you pull for Ripley. They don’t seem to have many fans on Coach T. I’m sure they welcome the support.
  14. Watched some of the Crockett-Millington game. The Millington QB is a hoss. Thought he was a great runner then he uncorked a couple of pretty TD passes. My guess is that Haywood will be successful if they can keep the QB from beating them by himself.
  15. I’ll take a one-point win and advance. That’s the nice thing about the high school playoffs. There is no committee that we need to impress by getting “style points” or by a big margin of victory. The winner moves on and the loser goes home. And, as they always say about the NCAA tournament, everybody goes home with a loss except for one team. Right, Alcoa fans?
  16. Thanks @stacmot. I hope y’all can move on next week. I already predicted a Tomcat win vs. Millington in that thread.
  17. Haywood is a heavy favorite to beat Millington at home and advance to the quarter-finals. Massey predicts: Haywood 42 Millington 14
  18. Following the sweep of Region 8-3A by Region 7-3A in week 1, we get a rematch of Ripley at Covington. These teams just played two weeks ago and Covington took that game 36-0. Is there any reason to suspect that this week’s replay will turn out differently? Still, that’s why they play the games. On paper, the Chargers are heavy favorites. But they don’t play the games on paper. This remains a long-time rivalry between two schools in neighboring counties. I’m sure that Ripley will not come into Covington ready to concede defeat.
  19. Thanks for the kudos. Yeah, our pass defense features freshmen and sophomore DB’s. They were a little shaky to start the year, but have gotten better every week. After 11 games now, they show quite a bit of improvement. I was sorry to see y’all’s score, where SGC lost tonight 24-20. Your guys have always been scrappy. Wish you were still in 3A with us. Can’t you get ‘em to expel a few students and drop back down? You are welcome to adopt our Covington guys and follow us. We are only guaranteed one more game, but that’s all anybody can say this time of year.
  20. Hamilton was just not competitive. Running clock after the half, and Coach Kirby played our second string the entire second half. The JV won the second half 14-6.
  21. So, the predictions were accurate - Region 7-3A gets the sweep over 8-3A. The tightest game was Ripley over Sheffield 12-8. Now we get replays of Dyersburg vs Westview and Covington vs Ripley next week. Week 3 will feature the winners of those two games head to head. It will be week 4 before the team coming out of our region faces the semifinalist from middle TN. It’s the playoffs. Win or go home. I love this time of year. It all gets settled on the field.
  22. Dyersburg wins Covington wins Ripley wins is the Westview score final yet.
