  1. Yep, and they franchised their brand and Memphis now has several Gus’s restaurants. The restaurant started years ago in Mason as Maggie’s. Maggie invented the chicken recipe. When she died, her nephew, Gus, inherited the place. Changed the name to Gus’s. Gus died a few years ago, but his family still runs the place.
  2. Glad to see you active on Coach T again, Stacmot. it's getting close to that second season (playoffs). Your team and mine need to win out and get positioned for an advantageous seeding in the first and second rounds of the playoffs. Go Tomcats and Go Chargers. One advantage of not having y'all on our schedule is that I can pull for you and not feel guilty. If we played each other that is not as easy.
  3. Here are the results for these two teams versus common opponents. They are both 4-0 against this competition OPPONENT RIPLEY COVINGTON Bolivar Central 45-38 56-24 McNairy Central 40-13 57-14 Liberty Magnet 48-6 70-12 Scott's Hill 49-0 42-0 I'm not sure that you can tell much from blowout wins like these. Final score depends on how soon the coach pulls his starters, etc.
  4. The Daily Memphian has this on the game: https://dailymemphian.com/section/sportshigh-school-sports/article/39240/memphis-prep-football-week-10-high-school-preview-lynx-host-trojans Ripley (6-2, 4-1 Region 7-3A) at Covington (6-2, 4-1) The rundown: Skylan Smith (1,262 yards, 8.9 per carry, 21 touchdowns) and the area’s top rushing offense (277.9 yards per game) welcome in a good Ripley team. Covington is sixth in this week’s Class 3A state poll and 10th in the Dandy Dozen.
  5. Cal-Preps predicts Covington 38 Ripley 28
  6. Well, I guess I’m just an old retired guy with too much time on his hands. I decided to scan through the Max—Prep website rankings, looking for how they placed these schools. You will be surprised at who they have at #10. 1. Henry County 2. Hardin County 3.JCS 4. Dyersburg 5. Huntingdon 6. Dresden 7. Munford 8. Riverside 9. Haywood 10. Milan The next two are Covington, followed by McKenzie. I really don’t care how they get ranked, because the playoffs decide everything I’m interested in. Still, I thought I’d provide a second opinion ( albeit from a trusted source).
  7. How about Westview 41 McNairy. 7 At least, that is what Massey thinks.
  8. If you read the 3rd post in this thread, you will see that actually Ripley beat Covington in 2014, and that Covington has won 8 straight since then. The 25 years is not true.
  9. Covington and Ripley have a lot of football history. The teams have played 53 times since Covington High began (as a merger between Byars-Hall High and Frazier High) in 1970. The TN high school database shows that Covington is leading the series 33-18. The database only shows results thru 2019, so adding Charger wins in 2020 and 2021, the series stands at 35-18. The Chargers have won 8 in a row since Ripley last picked up a 24-19 win in 2014. Since Ripley got a 29-28 victory in 1996, the Chargers have won 22 and Ripley has won 4. Stock traders tell us that “past performance is no indicator of future results”, but I like the chances that my Chargers will have to beat the Tigers this week.
  10. First, Haywood is tough to beat at home Second, I pull for Haywood because they are my neighbors Third, Massey has Haywood winning 42-21 For those three reasons, I’m picking Haywood.
  11. When Ripley visits Covington this Friday night, they will come in with a chance to win Region 7-3A. If they win their final two games against Covington and Dyersburg, and if Covington were to beat Westview the following week, that would make Ripley the region champs. I know that Covington is favored to beat Ripley, but the Tigers will sure have the incentive to take this game. I still like my Chargers to win. What’s the thinking on Coach T about this game?
  12. I like your stat better than mine, but I have double-checked mine. I get the official stats e-mailed to me after each Covington game, and Skylan is listed for 47 yards rushing on 15 carrys in the Dyersburg game. What is the source of your data?
  13. Based on the 3A poll, you have to think that 7-3A is the strongest 3A region in the state. With teams ranked #2 and # 8, and another two at # 11 and #12, that is a pretty strong region.
  14. Both Liberty and Bolivar were doing GoFan electronic tickets only. I have season tickets, so don’t have to buy tickets for our home games, but I have seen folks paying cash at Covington this year. Paid cash at Munford and at Dyersburg, as I recall.
  15. Yep, but I recommend that you take your own refreshments. Liberty concession stand only takes credit cards (no cash). And, to buy something you have to scan their QR code, then type in credit card info, your address, find their menu online, order what you want, then go to the concession stand and claim your stuff. To buy two soft drinks took me a good 10 minutes. It’s the most convoluted system I ever saw. And, the two drinks cost me $6.50.
  16. With several Region 7-3A schools having open dates this week, there are only two games between region teams. Massey predicts a couple of blow-out results. These would not affect current region standings, unless there were a significant upset. Predicted scores: Dyersburg 42 Scotts Hill 7 and McNairy Central 40 Liberty Magnet 20
  17. D is evidently not a point of emphasis at Bolivar. There is a reason Covington scored 57 against them. It’s like, “let’s hurry up and let the other team score so that we can get back on offense”.
  18. Yep that’s the player. But, I have looked at the Sonny-Moore power rankings for the current top four teams in these two regions. They are: 7-3A Dyersburg 129.29 Covington 121.26 Westview 111.25 Ripley 110.65 8-3A Sheffield 93.38 Bolton 94.32 Hamilton 87.35 East 88.96 Comparing Sheffield versus Ripley, Ripley is ranked about 17 points better than the best team in 8-3A. These playoffs will be interesting.
  19. All I know is that have a player named Jackson who evidently plays every position, has amazing stats, and is in the running for Mr. football.
  20. Yep, those four will be going to the playoffs. The bottom four teams are just not competitive, at least this season. I want to take another look at the 8-3A opponents when I get time. I understand that Sheffield has the lead, 5-0 in the region.
  21. After week 8 here are the Region 7-3A standings per the TSSAA, Schools are listed with their region record, followed by their overall won-lost record. I have also listed their remaining Region 7-3A opponents Dyersburg. 4-0 7-0 Scott’s Hill, Liberty, Ripley Covington. 4-1 6-2 Ripley, Westview Westview. 4-1 5-3 McNairy, Covington Ripley 4-1 6-2 Covington, Dyersburg Bolivar. 1-4 4-4 Scott’s Hill, Liberty Scotts Hill. 1-3 2-5 Dyersburg, Bolivar, McNairy McNairy Central 0-4 1-6 Liberty, Westview, Scott’s Hill Liberty Magnet. 0-4. 0-7 McNairy, Dyersburg, Bolivar This is interesting. Covington, Westview, and Ripley are all tied at 4-1 in the region. Westview has the tie-breaker over Ripley because they won head-to-head. What if Ripley wins out, beating both Covington and Dyersburg? They could still win the region if Covington knocks off Westview and Dyersburg beats Scott’s Hill and Liberty (a 99% certainty). Then both Ripley and Dyersburg would be 6-1 in the region and Ripley would own the head-to-head tie-breaker. Y’all tell me if I’m right here. There is still a lot of football to be played, folks.
  22. Covington last played Liberty in 2014. We lost 35-12 at their place that year. As I recall, they had a really good team.
  23. Covington will visit Madison County this week to take on Liberty Magnet. All the indicators are that Covington will take this one easily. But, the games are played on the field, not on paper. I’ll take the opportunity to visit the buffet at the Old Country Store.
