  1. wow, just checked the tssaa site for D I results and there have been a few upset in the first couple of rounds. Gotta love this sport
  2. Does anyone have any info. on the fresh. and soph. state, where and when? Thanks in advance
  3. True, Beth was special. She won a total of 10 also but I was not including cross country. Bumbalough from BA won 9 w/ his cross country. Anne Santi from BA is also up there. Dunlap also won a Basketball title. I was mainly talking about track and field.
  4. Molly is the closest to Cantrell. She did win 4 ind. events plus the pentathlon. She has a total of 8 championships. Victoria Dunlap has 6 titles but I hear she is injured. If not for her injury, I think she would possibly equal if not better Molly Kennedy. Both Sean waller and Ramon Clay only have 5 each individually, not sure about the relays. Larry Cantrell won the 1, 2, and 400 three years in a row. His 10th title was in the longjump. He did win the team title by himself. I have not been able to find anyone with more titles than him. He is the Carl Lewis of Tn track.
  5. It would be hard to find anyone that has ever had a performance, at the state meet, that would equal what Larry Cantrell (Goodletsville High) had in the mid 80's. He won the state by himself. 4 events, 40 pts. He won the longjump (around 22'), the 200, the 100 (10.6) and he ran an incredible 400 in 46 seconds. He was a tailback that weighed around 220lbs. He went to Alabama and just missed the Olympic team in the 400. Any of you "OLDTIMERS" remember Larry?
  6. Adrian wresteled for Whites Creek, he won it 3 times and his last loss was to Andrew Mathews from Brentwood Academy. Macallie assistant Mike Newman won state in 88.
  7. With the school closings, what is the status of the duals? Will they still start on time today or will they try and make it a one day event?
  8. What pc requirements are needed to watch the videos? I have an old pc and I can not get the vids. Thanks in advance.
  9. "Taylor Scherer even said that after the first period you could see it in his eyes he was gased. " Cobra, how do you know what Scherer said? Where you there or did you read it somewhere?
  10. Cobra, I am not sure what you read but we(JPII) did go to the Zac Jarzynka Memorial tourney last year and Courtney did dominate his comp. We also went to the S. Oldham tourney in Ky the past to seasons. That is where Courtney suffered his only 2 losses the past 2 years. He lost in the finals to S. Oldhams Taylor Sherrer(sp), a 3 time Ky State Champ. Both matches were battles and Courtney was robbed the first time, his soph. yr. Last year, it was a battle but the Ky kid was ready and in great shape. He outlasted Coffee 7-3. I am offering this because Letner reminds me of the Ky wrestler, they even look and wrestle alike. This is where it gets interesting, when Coffee was at JPII, we made sure that he was battle tested before the state championships. This is not a knock on Cent., their schedule was made out before they had Courtney. However, he has not been tested like the other elite 215's have been tested and this could be a problem for him. All the other 215's know what it is to go 6 mins. Courtney has not been 6 mins since the finals last year. IMHO, Courtney's strength is unmatched, conditioning is the key. One thing working in Courtney's favor is that he will be the #1 seed and not have to face both Letner and Morgan. Throw Birman and Reviez into the mix and it will be a tough field to go through. I can hardly wait to see all of the great match-ups, at every weight class. Man, I love this sport.
  11. Jeff, we have certain standards at JPII, if you do not meet those standards, then you are not going to be a part of the school. We got 24 guys that wear our school colors with pride and integrity, How many you got? What's up w/ beech, why so many wrestlers out?
  12. Not so fast grasshopper. don't count your chickens before they hatch. He is not at JpII for a reason. ?????????Hmmmmmmm
  13. Well, I am glad it was just a stinger. Our trainer said that he thought it was just a stinger, but he did not want to risk any further damage. To bad he quit, it is a tough sport. Thanks
  14. Werazzlin or any of you Beech guy's, I was wanting to check on your 160lb guy that was injured at JPII on the 27th. How is he and what was his injury? I hope he is fine but you never know w/ a neck. Thanks
  15. Yes, I realize that there is always some gas for the fire, but when someone makes a false statement, I have to correct them. You to are mistaken. (By the way, I am pretty "husky" and bigger than coach Cook) Even in defeat, WE always make our guys shake hands, always. I sit in the chair beside him and he has NEVER told any of our guys not to shake hands. Hey, I love this, and I am not angry. Everyone can talk as much trash as they want, it fires me up. We may not be the best coaches out there, but we do know the sport and teach our guys to be gentlemen and good sports. That in itself is not easy, esp. in a hard fought battle. Again, you are wrong about this one.
  16. bluewhirlygig, you really show your ignorance with your last statement. Never, Never once have I or coach Cook told one of our guys not to shake hands with the oppenate or the other coach. In fact, when our kids forget, we make sure that he goes over and shakes the other coaches hand. This is one of our biggest points we drive home from the first meeting of the season, till the last match, SPORTSMANSHIP. No throwing headgear, keep your singlet up, and always shake their hands. There are a lot of times where our guys shake hands and the other kid does not shake ours. Jp2 wears the gold singlet w/ the sword on the back, maybe you are watching the wrong team. Yes, coach Cook is passionatate whenever Courtney wrestles, so am I. Whenever Courtney steps on the mat, most people would love to see him get beat. If someone gets in on him or lifts him up, the crowd goes "ahhhhhhh". So yes we get into his matches, but that must be the only match you watch because you would see us yelling, squirming, and whatever during our other kids matches. Sometimes, I feel as though I may yell to my wrestlers too much. Sometimes, although rarely, I will sit back and just let the kid wrestle. However, most of the time, I will Instruct them throughout the entire match. Coach Cook is the same way, we come from the same school and teaching. I know there are a lot of gold unis out there, you are definately confused.
  17. By no means is this meant to disrespect the other coaches or teams in "our area". I am just defending myself and our program. With that said, Takedown, how is this for success? Jp2 had more wrestlers named to the All-MidState team than all the other schools in "our area" combined. 3 of our guys placed in the state, our only senior, Courtney, and a sophmore. Our freshman 103 was 2 seconds away from placing. I am proud of my guys and our young program. Last year was the first full team we have had. I take pride in my coaching and I give it my all. It is hard to compete w/ the 100 year old schools, but we are building. Again, no disrespect to the schools in our area, I respect them all. Just fightin for my boys.
  18. You don't have a clue as to what it takes to coach Courtney. Yes, God gave him strength and quickness. He knows a lot more than he shows, he does what works for him as many great champions have done. He also plays 3 sports, so he does not wrestle year round like some guys. Nic Bundy is a great talent and a great kid, he lives, eats, and breathes wrestling, Courtney does not. It would be foolish and impossible for me to try and make Courtney into a wrestler like Nic Bundy. (just using Nic as an example). Why would I tell Courtney to throw legs in or do something that he does not have to do? Why put him in a spot that will give his opposition an opportunity to roll him or anything crazy like that. * As good as Bundy was his Jr. year, he got caught and he lost. Again, just using Nic as an example. My point here is that Courtney is a great athlete, but he knows more wrestling than you think. He just does what he has to do, nothing flashy, no grambys or anything like that. How do I know, my name is Billy Whitaker, one of those terrible coaches you are talking about. So, I take offense at your statements. No, I am not Pat Simpson or Gordon Connell (they were coaching when I was wretling 20 years ago), but I have been around wrestling for quite a while and have used myself and taught just about every move out there. So, for you to come on here and bash me shows very little class. Who are you???
  19. Hey lefty, even when Flatt was winning in AA, he still beat the best of the best in any class, in any state. Flatt has never retired, he stepped aside for 2 years to battle in court. He could not give coaching his all while he was battling the T$$AA, so he stepped aside. It is unfortunate what happened with Tom Moore, Coach Flatt is not the kind of man that sets out to hurt anyone. The Battle was over with the T$$AA, BA won, and Flatt was like the fighter, or player, he could not give up something that he loved sooo much. Sorry Tom Moore. BA does not have to recruit, esp. kids from out of state. A family moving to the Nashville area looks for the best schools and like it or not, BA falls into that cat. I knew my post would bring out some haters, it did not take you long. Let me guess, Flatt came to your house and offered you or your son a scholarship, yea, I've heard that before. By the way, that coward AD was Flatt, like I said, he never retired, he only took a break to concentrate his efforts on the court case. Another great victory for The old ball coach. Oh, thanks for the complement about the "best athletes", It makes me feel great and like a champion. Wait, I am, twice. Let's get it on, lol
  20. No question that the before mentioned coaches have done great things at those respected programs. I grew up playing both Phil King and Boyce Smith football, so for Boyce to have a league named after him says something and I definately respect what he did as a coach. I am not surprised however, that no one has given the respect to the answer to this question, Carlton Flatt. In 34 years of coaching, he is the winningest coach in TN, averaging over 10 wins per season. He has been in roughly 20 finals, winning 9. He started the program from scratch in 1970 and he built it into a dynasty. Brentwood Academy and Flatt have won state titles in almost every classification. He will get his 10th title, that elusive D2AAA title, this year. No disrespect to Tucker, but he coached for over 50 years or something like that. Flatt is one of the winningest coaches nationally(percentage wise)in the history of high school football. So, it is wise to say that he is the best coach in Tn high school history. BRENTWOOD HAIL TO THEE
  21. a good coach wants his best 11 out there as much as possible, besides, this is high school and kids need to play both ways. That's whats wrong w/ kids today, they are soft and not conditioned to go both ways.
  22. Heard the news today that Jimmy Gentry was returning to BA. I got goose bumps. If ever there was a man that God put on this earth to mentor young people, Jimmy Gentry is that man. Not only on the football field or the classroom, but also in life, Coach Gentry is as good as it gets. You can not help but to love and respect Coach Gentry as he loves and respects all those he touches. His return to the field is much bigger than the game of football. He inspires kids not only to play hard, but also to do the right thing. I was sad to hear about his wifes passing and I hope that his return will help fill that void, as his return will definately help fill the void our young kids so desperately need. "FIGHT'EM FOR FOUR RED".
  23. What's up Brandon, it is nice to hear from you. You know how I am, I always like to throw a few logs on the fire. Esp. when pple that have no clue talk trash. I always state the facts and back it up. If being the best means that u have to take pop shoots from those that was'nt "recruited" (LOL) by BA, I'll take the shoots w/ a smile as I polish my rings. Love to your family, Whit
