Just the opposite is true concerning ratings. I could be mistaken, but Nashville is the only association using this rating system. Also I might add that the officials have no idea who rates who or how high. Remember that when officiating a game, your future ratings come from the visiting team as well as the home team. The officials are held accountable by the state whenever tournament assignments are given out. And yes the officials have the option to scratch a school.
I agree that we need more young officials to get involved. However, few are willing to take the time and dedication that is needed. You have to understand that you're talking about 3-5 nights a week for very little money. You have to love it to do it!
Also, you have to start off working middle school games. Those games usually start very early in the afternoon. Very few people can or afford to get off work early for this at a much reduced amount of money. When I started in 1972, Junior High games generally started at 4:30 or 5:00. Now thosec gemes are stating at 2:00-2:30. As you can see it is much different now.
As far as money, my best year I made $3500.00 working high school and small college. That may sound like a lot but I was traveling to Memphis, Clarksville, Pulaski and most everywhere in between. That was working an average of 5-1/2 days a week. I lost 25 lbs. that year and I was in good shape. Not much money for 4-1/2 months work.
Don't mean to keep harping on all this, but I really would like for the average fan to understand how dedicated most officals are and what we go through. I loved the game and wanted to stay close to it. Trust me. We do not do it for the $$$$$$.
